"How does he know what a Flapjack is?" He doesn't, actually. Dana Terrace had a livestream a few weeks ago that had voiced character pieces for Lillith, Hunter, and I think some other characters. Lillith's confirmed that she is aro/ace, and Hunter's described how he found out Flapjack's name (and then went around asking what flapjacks were; Belos told him they were akin to pancakes, but Hunter didn't know what those were either and didn't want to ask too many questions). It's a fun listen, I recommend it.

The fact that Belos has so utterly instrumentalized Hunter in his mind that he named him after his own profession (I.e. witch-hunter) just shows how little he considers him a fully actualized person. Goddamn, this show hurts sometimes

I think it was also a twisted revenge in a way. Pretty sure the “betrayal” Belos mentioned to the Collector was just every iteration of the brother, starting with the first, ending up loving magic. So name his brother’s clones after the profession that the brother renounced. Plus I’m willing to bet Wittebane means “witches’ bane” which would mean the brother went against their family name by falling in love with magic, and a witch.

If you spend a long time analyzing the images in the background of this episode that are Belos memories, you will discover that one: Belos cut off his ears with a knife to make them look like that, and two: Philip's brother got a witch pregnant and settled down, but Philip got into a fight with him and stabbed him to death.

There's a couple other portraits that make it seem like Belos' brother, while at first was like him in their preset bias' against witches, actually found love in the Boiling Isles. He realized that they were in fact wrong about their opinions and that these people are just *people* . He's seen with another person in a couple different portraits, it looks like he's introducing someone to Belos in one of the portraits where Belos has a knife behind his back. It's possible that Clawthorne/witch who's firing spells at Belos after he murdered his brother for falling into cahoots with witches, or marrying one, was in fact the one he fell in love with and had introduced to Belos.
I honestly Dell Clawthorne and by extension Eda & Lilith are distant descendants of Phillip's brother. They have the same nose as Hunter as well as the statue of the brither, Hunter is theorized to be a grimwalker of the brother, and both Dell & Hunter have cardinal palismans.
I think that the Clawthorns were the family that Belo's brother got close to when he realized witches were just people I don't think that the Clawthorns are directly related because that family is one of the most powerful witches on the boiling isles...and I don't think there would be any magicless witches. Although it is VERY interesting to me that the old Golden Guard (who is supposedly also a clone of Belo's brother) can do magic. But Hunter cannot

hearing you mention "a redheaded witch - probably a Clawthorn" just made me realize It was Eda's mom that told Luz about Phillip. she said that her mom or grandma knew about him And that painting with Bellos looking angry at "Original Hunter" with a woman.... well, I assume Original fell in love with.... the Clawthorn witch, and Bellos felt betrayed. which I assume is why he killed his brother.
And the Clawthorne seems to be pregnant on the picture... Which makes Philips brothers death all the more tragic, because he never got to meet his child😢
Something that I realized was that Belos basically confirmed that Hunter wasn't involved in his Day of Unity plan at all. He stated that if he told Hunter that the titan "had plans for him" then Hunter would do what Belos told him to. Obviously we knew Belos was being manipulative, but the fact that Hunter had so much faith in Belos and what his role in Belos's plan was, makes this so heartbreaking. Belos didn't actually care about Hunter's safety. If anything happened, he could just start over. He only cared because Hunter resembled his brother. Jesus Christ. Edit: adding onto this, when belos told Hunter to stay inside the castle in Eclipse Lake, at first it sounds like he means well. But the more I think about it, it definitely had nothing to do with that. Darius confirmed that Hunter had like, no social experiences or connections with anyone outside the castle. So yeah Belos definitely was keeping him completely isolated from society, most likely to avoid another repeat of Hunter betraying him.
I mean Hunter is marked, so either he rebelled and was killed or he made it to The Day of Unity and was drained with everyone else...at least as far as Belos planned. If he could have kept Hunter completely isolated, then who could Hunter go to? The back-stabbing coven heads who are either drinking the ghoul-aid or are in it for what it can give them and all seem to dislike the Golden Guard. The Boiling Isles residents that fear him. The wild witches that he has helped to hunted down and who probably hate him. The Bat Queen, when he has helped Belos kill so many palismen. Belos' plan started being disrupted the first time Hunter had a half-way positive interaction with another person. He has slowly been building a budding support network. Belos in his hubris has thoroughly underestimated Hunter and what he is capable of. He doesn't know how the power of open-mindedness (open-heartedness), love, friendship, family and understanding will be the blindspot in his plans.
Oh god, so much stuff to unpack... Within Belos's mind, there were at least 16 masks. That means if we average the hundreds of years Belos has lived, we can assume that the Grimwalkers never lived past their 20s. Belos was a witch hunter and named Hunter...Hunter. He named him after the purpose he wanted his brother to fufill. You can see in the background paintings multiple images of Belos and his brother. His brother seemed to have fallen in love with a witch, which caused Philip to kill him with knife. It's possible the witch was a Clawthorne, given the repeated bird imagery associated with Philip's brother, and an ancestor of Eda, Lilith, and Dell.
And as someone above pointed out, it was Eda's Mother who mentioned that _her_ Grandmother 'knew of' the human. So we can somewhat figure out the generations lining up to fit.
It was the reassurance from Luz that sold it for me the pleading tone: "It's gonna be fine. You're gonna be okay." And the fear in Hunters eyes. Like wow, I honestly forgot it was a Disney show for that moment thought they would have it be such a gut punch for Hunter to die.
I like that Luz is just wearing Eda’s grudgby jacket from now on. I was hoping she’d get a change to her design like all of the other main characters and her wearing something of Eda’s is better than anything else I could have thought of.

My thoughts while and after watching this episode: - Hunter. His name was Hunter. It was always there. He's a witch, Hunter. WITCH-HUNTER. - Hunter wasn't entirely wrong "Belos never having done anything worthy of guilt". I mean that's not wrong, he doesn't feel guilty about anything he's done. - I didn't want to be right about all these theories, Hunter is a grimwalker, one of many, Philip killed his brother (I don't even know if it's his brother; watch it be a twist and he was in-love with Hunter but had internalized hate which lead to jealousy, I call the original one Hunter because his original name wasn't revealed) and all the grimwalker clones, Philip/Belos being a monster, I didn't want to be right, not like this. - I was thinking back since Elsewhere and Elsewhen that Philip being Belos and him hating witches, this is going to sound super-specific and super-weeb, there are probably more popular examples but this popped into my head first because I recently finished watching it. I was jokingly thinking that "oh maybe it's like the Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest" where demons spent centuries subtrefuging their way in human society to rewrite knowledge and make the stronger kind of magic go extinct and appear weaker (long-story-short: there's all kinds of magic, aptitude determined by 4 crests, there was a great hero with the strongest magical crest, he reincarnated himself to the future where he expected to fight the demons when human magic could rival them, he could've won back then but it would've been a pyrrhic victory, only to find-out that all the human knowledge on magic is ass-backwards, it's commonplace to speak incantations when you don't have to and it's considered the most powerful, and his crest is now considered the weakest). I fucking hit that nail on the head. I got blessed by Apollo for a brief moment. - Damn, if this wasn't on Disney and automatically marketed for kids, god imagine if they had a higher age-rating to work with. Just the souls of all the Palismen Belos absorbed, it's now different than just him absorbing their magic or life-force, he's been devouring their souls. God, and the knife-fight. - The emotional whiplash after going from *all this* to Amphibia.
I could probably write a whole essay about Belos's inner self being a child, I feel like it's very deliberate not only on Belos's part in universe, but also on a more meta level.
Well I think it's very telling that Luz thinks it's his guilt while Hunter thinks it's his innocence, because it sets up how both of them are wrong but in different ways. Hunter has followed Belos literally for as long as he existed, so he can only see what he's been told until he's shown the truth. But Luz, as inner Belos himself will point out to her, isn't much better. I think It's highly implied that Luz is actively deceiving herself since the beginning of the episode, and I mean the night market, not just being in Belos's mind. When Eda asks her who is Belos, Luz looks uneasy, almost guilty. My guess? After her interactions with Philip and seeing what his unfinished glyph combos can do when completed, she has a hunch. But it's a hunch she doesn't wanna admit or acknowledge in any way. When she's in his mind she keeps seeing the evidence pile up to back up her hunch, but she can't, won't address it. She doesn't wanna admit it to herself because then it'll be real. Then the person she looked up to and turned to his writing for answers would have been the monster that tried to destroy the people she loved and took away her ticket back home. Luz is guilty, Hunter is Innocent, and Belos is neither of those things. He's a bad person doing horrible things while being so convinced he's in the right that he's incapable of feeling guilt. Now the fact that he's a child doesn't actually surprise me. At it's very core, Philip's mentality is that of someone who never learned to grow up because nothing ever truly forced him to. He'd been able to stay the exact same person for centuries by tricking everyone around him. At the end of the day Philip is an immature brat who obnoxiously demands everyone plays the game by his rules and throws a tantrum whenever they disagree. However, the fact that he can transform his inner self to look like anything? That's terrifying. Obviously someone who's lived as many lives as he had would have a complicated inner self, but instead of being made up of the different personas he's had, he's in full control of his inner self's form. I feel like this exemplifies perfectly the way he's been achieving all his goals. He's a master manipulator, and he will say and do whatever it takes to get you to believe him. He knows Luz wants to see the good in everyone, so obviously he takes the form of a scared helpless child. And to be fair, that was him at one point. I imagine kid Philip wasn't the most loved and appreciated kid on the playground, and his brother was the only one who had his back. But at the same time I don't doubt he was selfish and wanted praise, and was prone to lashing out whenever things didn't go his way. And those aren't terrible flaws for a child to have, but as we've discussed, Philip never grew out of that, just learned to make it seem more presentable. And that's the whole point of his character, of his inner self being able to look like any form he's ever taken. His real power is his ability to put on a show. The boiling isles got Wizard of Oz'd by a puritan prick.
If Hunter runs into Darius in the woods it's a perfect set up for the Coven Traitor Trio getting the information they need, as well as a heartbreaking scene where Darius convinces Hunter that he is safe with them and they won't betray him.
To focus on one of the lighter parts pf this ep, I like that Eda gave Luz her jacket because "her kid's got cold shoulders" (And then that saved Hunter bc of the glyphs in the pockets)
The fandom will spend every day until the next episode looking for HD screenshots of all of Philip’s memories, and building the true story of his past out from them.
this was the first episode that had me in literal tears. I related to Hunter a painful amount and it hit too close to home watching him be forced to confront his gaslighting and indoctrination. anyways, this was really an incredibly wonderful episode.

Some of the portraits in Belos’s mindscape lend to my theory that Phillip’s brother fell for a witch of the boiling isles, and that was the betrayal that led to their falling out, the brother’s death, and Phillip’s attempts at creating a clone of his dead brother. Also my theory is that the brother started the Clawthorne bloodline, meaning that Hunter is a clone of Eda’s ancestor.
Lets talk about nice things this episode: 1. Hunter telling Flapjack that he loves him 2. Darius caring for Hunter 3. Raeda!! 4. Hooty being a matchmaker 5. Eda knowing the signs of an incoming panic attack and reacting appropriately 6. Eda extending a helpful hand to Hunter even though she doesn't like/know him 7. Luz opening up the Owl House as a safe space for Hunter if he wanted it 8. Darius, Raine, and Eberwolf working together and getting along
_"Eda's heart is like the island of misfit toys."_ - I LOVE THIS. (May not be the exact quote, went back but couldn't find it). It's such a perfect way to describe Eda & the type of people she draws to her. I have a feeling that Darius will probably either take Hunter in himself, or send him to stay with someone he really trusts (to avoid any suspicion from Belos). I'm _really_ surprised by what they got away with in this episode! The horror aspect was SO clear, the art style (like for the souls of the palisman, which was a heart wrenching concept in itself) didn't spare any scary stuff to protect the sleep of children...
What I have gathered: -Belos and his brother were raised during the 1600s, witch trials, puritanism rules times, believing that all magic is evil and people need to be saved from it. -Somehow, while Belos was still a kid, he and his brother came to the demon dimension. It's possible that they found out a way to go back between the two worlds and that is why there is statues of adult Belos on the human realm? The "original hunter" was intrigued by magic and fascinated by magic, coming to find love in what could be a ancestor of Eda and Lilith. It's possible too that this witch was the one visiting them from time to time and they followed her and then couldn't get back. -The first big betrayal of Original Hunter was to fall in love with a witch so Belos killed him. -Clawthorne witch found out and cursed Belos, which made him dependant on paliman's souls to keep surviving this long. Sometimes later is when he writes his diary, probably with the full intention of being read by someone else that could help him, just the idea of getting back to the human realm, while in reality he was looking for a way to eliminate all magic alltogether. -Now that I said all of this... it's possible that the curse of Belos is exactly the same as the one Lilith put on Eda, pass down from generation to generation. But of course, Lilith being a little kid didn't really understood what she was doing and Eda luckily managed to find an alternative treatment that didn't involved killing palisman.
Seeing how Belos thought Hunter asking what happened as a betrayal, I don't think they really betray betray him. The original most likely just went and date a witch and had a child with her and Belos though of it as the worst of the worst betrayal in the world.
I love so hard how Darius is all "No, they can't see us, lets be cautios" until the second he hears Hunter is in Danger and immediatly switches to "NOBODY EFFING TOUCH MY BOY!!!!"
Zeno Robinson is Hunter's VA, and he did a PHENOMENAL job in this episode. The portrait in 26:42 may be a reason as to why Phillip murdered Hunter Prime; Hunter fell in love with a witch and may have started a family with her. Also explains the other portrait of the red-haired witch chasing Phillip & zapping him. And if she's a Clawthorne ancestor, well...someone better tell Lilith she punched a distant relative. The unfortunate cycle of creating & destroying Hunter may be due to Hunter being a very CLOSE copy of the original: Hunter has Hunter Prime's heart & conscience. Phillip was trying to create a new Hunter who shares his horrifying ideals, but the Hunter copies keep ending up "disappointing" him. This may also be why Darius joined the Resistance; he knew what happened to his old mentor. And I hope you prepare yourself, because King's backstory may be up next.
I'm pretty sure the knife fight tableau was Philip and his brother fighting. At some point his brother turned against him, and Philip killed him. The image of Belos looking into the mirror afterward, I -think- might be him right after mutilating his ears with the same knife, so he can blend in with witches. It also explains this long history of creating 'replacement' brothers...each of whom inevitably also turns against him when they realized who he is and what he wants. Just like the original. Belos has killed his brother so often now that he hasn't got any moral code left at all. He's rubbed himself down to the quick.
Just wanna throw in some light, joyful theories: ◾ Luz's Spanish lessons become a key factor in the fight against Belos. ◾ Amity said in K3oHD episode that house demons get weird after a few thousand years, meaning Hooty may indeed have watched the original fight but like in Clawthorne vs Clawthorne grudgby, was "an unbiased adversary hoot hoot", and watched the whole thing go dowait this isn't a cheerful theory ◾ Steve might rebel, but because all the coven scouts wear identical gear, he's untrackable. ◾ Luz and the Bad Girl Coven have a month to teach as many citizens as possible about critical thinking skills and skepticism. This ultimately leads to Luz applying things she learned in the Earth education system (but sidelined because boring), and leads an epilogue-era society into a new age of scientific discovery and Renaissance. ◾ Hooty said in his S1 episode with Gus that he was round in times of the sky being red. Perhaps Hooty was there in prehistoric times, per when Lilith and Luz looked in the time pool. Meaning it might have been Hooty who trapped/banished the Collector. ◾ Remember King's Dad? Chekov's Parent. Potential theory that he's somehow connected to the Collector. Or their common ancestor had something to do with containing the Collector, and King does indeed have a destiny to rule. OK I seem to be going back to non-light theories, so yeah imma stop
my theory is that, because Hunter doesnt know that Darius isnt on Belos' side, that he's going to run to to his captain and end up adopting Willow's "Caleb" nickname for him as his new name. they do still text each other afterall, and he knows she's NOT on Belos' side also!! yeah, they implied the sigil draining stuff in the last episode, with the paper Raine got from Darius. (for anyone unaware: it says the plan is to drain people from their sigils to power something of Belos' on the day of unity! (we just. now have the stakes that people will probably die. oh god)) i think the reason Darius wants to include Eda is because she's amongst the very last adults with no sigils. so im glad Hooty essentially revealed to Darius, Raine, and Eber Wolf(? i think that's Beast Boy's name) that Eda is having trouble with "traditional" magic, because i did NOT want to watch Eda have to awkwardly explain she can only do glyph magic. they definitely know now that she cant help in that way. maybe glyphs will help? (also, it was very illegal that we couldn't see Raine's worry about Eda and her health visually in this episode, i wanted to see their face) im v interested to see what Raine and Darius and Eber Wolf do from here on out with their plot also!! Dana released on-stream that Hunter doesnt know what a flapjack is, and even released a little audioclip of Hunter learning to trust Flapjack/palismans. if youd like subtitles for it, just look up the user biggytunaafish on tiktok and itll be the first video in the search results. it's very sweet and heart-wrenching. people have taken this and then theorized that, in the derby episode, when Hunter pauses and then Flapjack tweets and THEN Hunter says "Caleb? (insert the rest of the fake name he said in the episode)" that Caleb is Belos/Phillip's brother's name and that moment was Flapjack suggesting it to Hunter rather than a forename that Hunter came up with himself (hence why he looked at Flapjack and said "Caleb?" in a questioning tone). so not ONLY could it be Willow's nickname for him, like "Captain" is his for her, but it could also mean way more than just that! it's def an interesting idea

@@thethirdbill that is a good question, and one that Dana hadnt answered in the stream. but what many people believe in theory is that Flapjack was Belos/Phillip's brother's palisman, and that Phillip's brother named him Flapjack and that, in the audio, that's why Belos/Phillip got suspicious of Hunter's questions. because Flapjack was his brother's palisman (but again, that's just a theory. nobody knows for sure. so, again, good question! i'm really curious what rhe answer could be, especially if Flapjack is unrelated to Belos/Phillip's brother) this theory also, potentially, adds to the theory that the witch Belos/Phillip's brother was in love with was a Clawthorne. because Clawthornes have an affinity for birds, and the brother would have married into the family (there's also stuff about Eda's dad carving palismans out of wood and Belos/Phillip's brother carving wood in one of the portraits). in another comment of mine in this comment section, i recommended a tumblr called Cloudy With A Chance Of Raine Storm, placed as a singular word, because they have a good compilation of the evidence of this said theory. i highly recommend it if you want to invest time into reading more about the theory. but that's one of the threads of not only how Flapjack got his name, but also for how Flapjack knew the name "Caleb" to suggest for Hunter to use as a fake name in the derby episode. because, the theory pushes, Belos/Phillip's brother's name was Caleb. and Hunter is a grimwalker of Caleb, and Caleb is (hypothetically) Flapjack's original palisman-holder. it would explain part of why Flapjack has refused any other witch: because, if palismans and their holders truly are linked in a soul-bonded way of "I choose you and I keep choosing you", then Flapjack would want to keep choosing his original holder. in every grimwalker's lifetime. After the episode ended I broke down and cried. I haven’t cried over The Owl House since Agony of a Witch. This episode while amazing it was really intense.
Man your reactions to like,, everything are my favourite. You have such a deep and empathetic understanding of emotions and mental well-being and it just makes you so interesting to watch watch things.

Heavy emphasis on the breakdowns Also I think this episode was wonderful in the fact that we all wanted our theories to be correct but we were all still shocked and to some extent horrified that they actually were. I know shows where confirmed theories are underwhelming and ones where confirmed theories are pure elation but only with The Owl House have I seen people be sad and scared because their theories were correct. It's amazing. Dana and her team did an amazing job with this show.
Hunter’s panic attack is actually pretty fitting in here. After all Hunter just learned that his whole life was a lie. He learned his uncle has been lying to everyone. He learned about what happened to the other Golden Guards. He learned his uncle, his only family is actually evil. He learned Belos, his fellow uncle actually doesn’t care for him and tried to kill him. He learned about the collector. And who knows what he saw when he fell out of the mind.
My theory The Clawthrones are related to “Belos”! And with that last screenshot, I’m self confirming it! His brother fell in love with a witch and the claw thrones are his descendants. Phillips brother had a sparrow in that old book that neck beard guy had talking about the two brothers that disappeared (the episode where we meet V). The clawthornes all have bird related palismen. Ida’s father shows a resemblance to Hunter (same nose) and has hair is similar to Phillip Wittabane.
This episode just broke me, like even more than Agony of a Witch. I know what it's like to have a panic attack where you're worried about your future interactions with someone after finding out or doing something they didn't want you to. It was absolutely a fantastic episode and I always love seeing breakdowns and panic attacks in cartoons because it's realistic in those situations, makes the characters feel more human, and it's just relatable cause I would also totally lose my shit if I found out my uncle was making and destroying clones of me and lying to everyone in the town to steal their magic and kill them. I have no idea what's going to happen in the next episode and it's both exhilarating and terrifying. Also Luz telling Hunter he'll be okay will forever always break my heart.

I thought it was so cool how in Hollow Mind, they told us a story while there was a story already going on. I'm talking about how they gave us Philips backstory through the pictures in the background during the episode. That's really great storytelling 👍. They really managed to make this the darkest episode of the show so far. Season 3 is already on that path. Even though Hunters panic attack in this episode and also in Labrynth Runners are sad and painful to watch, it's also important to see something like that being represented in shows and movies because some people go through that in real life and also suffer from anxiety. His panic attack also shows how deeply hurt and traumatized this poor boy is 😔, sadly Belos will kill him if he goes back to the castle. The way they write characters with PTSD in this show is really well done.
if Philip's brother fell in love with a Clawthorne that would explain why the portal door was near Eda's childhood house, the clawthornes are really known for palistrum carving tradition and skills which sounds a lot like carpentry, it really make's sense, Eda's father even looks like Philip when he was younger and he has a palisman that mirrors that of Hunter's... It's crazy to think about it
Two major things that make sense with this episode is that 1) Darius knew the golden guard before Hunter and that might explain why he’s apart of the rebellion because The GG betrayed Belos and died 2) Hunter’s name is Hunter bc he literally was created to help Belos hunt witches
My current headcannon is that Phillip’s brother was named Caleb and flapjack was his palisman and the grimwalkers are named hunter cause they’re witch hunters

In the episode where they get the Titan's blood, there's a scene where Hunter thinks he's starting to understand his palisman's chirps. "Hey. I think I understand that. Is that your name?" Based on this, I think he told Hunter his name was Flapjack when he was starting to understand what he was saying.

When Old GG said the original Coven witches were still alive, Belos said theres still more work to do. Man casually dropping that he wanted to murder them all but needs to tweak the sigils first
probably a few more generations thrown into the mix considering how long ago the Deadwardian Era was. But certainly seems like there's a connection there in lineage.
Belos is a monster and I hope luz and the other people in the owl house can get to hunter he didn’t deserve belos hurting him like that this episode was crazy
in order to not think about that ending, my brain's been focusing on the setup tiny belos used to capture the palisman creature, it looked like a snare trap using the same potions eda uses for her curse??? (also the whole circuit thing reminds me vaguely of the glyph circuits) and the owlbeast was ensnared by the collector (or perhaps a version of the collector? they didn't speak in verse in that flashback/dream) maybe I'm grasping at straws but there seems to be some connection with a living being getting turned into a monstrous transformation curse, and that curse manifesting in the mind. that said, eda's battle in the center of the mind takes place in a much more abstract setting than willow's or belos' memory trees, perhaps that's how the mind manifests to visitors and the experience of a curse is much different or takes place in a different location entirely? so collector + soul/spirit = curse???? why are they called the collector? what's the deal with the owl beast? why were they trapped in stone? what is their end game? anyhow, i've got corkboard and strings for days and i'm still in a rambling mess of a state, so hopefully this makes some form of sense
Belos: I’m willing to do anything to rid humanity of evil. Luz: Nah dude your evil! Me: YAS 👏🏾 And don’t think I missed the part where you killed your own brother that’s BEYOND evil.
Remember that Luz not knowing that Belos is Philip is Dramatic Irony. She didn’t have as much knowledge about either of them as the audience does, since she can’t watch the scenes she’s not a part of.
Here's what I saw as Philip's backstory from the portraits. Philip and his brother were really close when they were growing up and became witch hunters. When they go to the Boiling Ilses the brother falls in love with a witch with red hair (Clawthorne?), got her pregnant. Philip disapproving and disgusted by this gets into a fight with his brother and kills him.
I wonder if Hunters comfort food is pancakes or oatmeal bars aka flapjacks. Also the portrait with the red haired witch shows her chasing off Belos with Hunter framing the bottom of the painting. perhaps he didn't fully die and was able to recover with some wild magic.
25:17 Actually, I think that image is meant to be Philip cutting up his ears to make them look pointed. You can tell by his appearance (clothes, hair, nose scar) that he's already taken on the Belos persona, so that image is long after he killed his brother.
I think I’ve been emotionally scarred from this episode. I basically sobbed over it, and empathize with Hunter and every emotion he felt, and understood the confliction and loss you feel when you’re in a toxic relationship. The trying to constantly justify the other person actions, and also thinking in the back of your mind if this person really is bad. Anyways to conclude, mans needs a LOT of therapy and I think I need to throw up a bit and then lie down.

I cannot WAIT to see the full history between the wittebane brothers. the little teases in the portrait implies so much and I almost missed them when I watched it- glad you went over it haha. I've seen people speculate on whether Phil is the older or younger of the two. I'm personally liking the idea that he's the younger. It would frame his constant recreation of the brother as a grimwalker as him initially wanting a big brother figure to protect him in the big scary boiling isles (hence, golden *guard*). It adds a bit of a twisted tragedy in that even after all these years, he's still clamoring for a brother that stays by his side and so he constantly remakes him, hoping that they don't end up betraying him again- like the first one.
Theory: Belos is going to make a new Grimwalker Golden Gaurd. We have seen all the ingredients needed brought up this season, and it's especially suspicious because that he had Hunter go hunt a selkidomus, probably to collect it's scales. Hunter might have to face off against the next Golden Gaurd. Or a different scenario: if Hunter gets injured/dies he can be fixed using Grimwalker ingredients.
One interesting thing is also that between the two memories of Belos in the past you can see that the golden guard already changed apperances so it's probably a different one.
The brother was already dead when Lilith and Luz met Philip. At the end of the episode in Philip’s cave there’s a pile of human-sized bones under what appears to be early grimwalker instructions hung up on the wall. The scene with Belos looking in a mirror and the knife in a bowl is almost certainly when he cut his ears to look less human. He’s even got a hand covering one of his ears.
What always gets me is the moment where Hunters like “Maybe I’m stupid!” He’d rather believe he’s terrible and horrible and dumb and wrong, than think that Belos could possibly be bad.
That's an interesting question abt the rebel group not being able to speak. I think it was more so bc they didn't want anyone to overhear and possibly know it's them even though it seems like they would be safe they probably don't want to risk it
Pet theory is the Coven Heads know there are traitors amogus, and the Oracle coven head is using his mind magic to keep tabs/audit/eavesdrop on people in a way similar to Odalia, ergo talking is dangerous. Offshot, the resistance being organised by Luz, who has been teaching key people in her life basic Spanish, therefore making discussions unintelligible to Uncie B and his 17th-century ass

Hunter doesn't know what a flapjack is, Flapjack told him his own name. But...his last owner had to name him that, and no other witch would know what a flapjack is. Therefore, I can only assume that Flapjack originally belonged to Belos's brother (or his son?)

ok so ya missed a couple things : PORTRAITS!! so one of the portraits we can see in this episode is one of "Hunter" and that Clawthorne(?) witch holding hands, and the witch is seemingly pregnant in the distance and a very angry looking Phillip in the foreground, there's then a portrait showing Belos from behind holding the knife behind his back, approaching the witch and his brother, this presumably leads to the knife fight that Phillip wins, after which would follow the portrait of the witch attacking Belos.
I did honestly really want to believe that Belos did have even a little bit of actual affection and care for Hunter just because I think it makes for a very compelling dynamic. But when you stop to realize that Belos didn’t even really give Hunter a _proper name_ there isn’t any room left to believe Belos ever cared for him. Hunter is named Hunter *_because he’s supposed to be a WITCH HUNTER_* he’s not even a person in Belos’ eyes, just a tool. A casualty to be used and disposed of
Technically there is affection but its a very different kinda affection. Because it seems directly stated the ONLY reason he kept making the grimwalkers was to have his brother again, but he wants them to fit a very specific description by being loyal to him completely (most likely a response because of how his brother "betrayed" him ). So oddly he's making them out of some form of love, but also wants control over this new version of his brother
Belos's door is going to be the ticket home for Luz I guess. I'm just terrified now because I don't see a way for her to avoid choosing between worlds...
Belos could give her a final choice, actually, so to speak. If the vision shown to the Coven heads is true, he wants to bring the Titan to Earth entirely. That's assuming Luz's friends can survive the process. So the choice is actually, does Luz let him do his plan, if he guarantees the survival of some witches, even if they lose their powers. Just so Luz doesn't have to choose between Camilla, and Eda, King and Amity.
@@karlthorkildson4650 He was trying to kill witches back before he took power and he just described himself as a witch hunter so I doubt they'll be any left if he gets his way. Also, presumably the collector won't be too kind to the survivors if he gets free. I'm just hoping still even though it seems like the possibility of a happy ending is slipping away.
Darius is probably so interested in protecting Hunter now because he knows what happens to the grimwalkers and noticed that Hunter's slowly starting to stray off the path Belos wanted him on. He probably recognized this with the last Golden Guard, who was Darius' mentor, giving him a reason to have a soft spot for Hunter. Darius is totally fine with this, since he encourages Hunter to make some friends and get a Penstagram account, but knows that now, Hunter's safety is his responsibility or else he'll be disposed of as well. I really loved the scene with Raine trying to interfere and Darius stopping them until Hunter is mentioned.

@@littlegoblinman221 Yeah, this is what I was going to say... Belos also calls Luz by her name for the first time. It's like a weird sort of acknowledgement from both of them happening at the same time, but for different reasons (coming from very different places for each of them).
"How does he know what a Flapjack is?" He doesn't, actually. Dana Terrace had a livestream a few weeks ago that had voiced character pieces for Lillith, Hunter, and I think some other characters. Lillith's confirmed that she is aro/ace, and Hunter's described how he found out Flapjack's name (and then went around asking what flapjacks were; Belos told him they were akin to pancakes, but Hunter didn't know what those were either and didn't want to ask too many questions). It's a fun listen, I recommend it.

The fact that Belos has so utterly instrumentalized Hunter in his mind that he named him after his own profession (I.e. witch-hunter) just shows how little he considers him a fully actualized person. Goddamn, this show hurts sometimes

I think it was also a twisted revenge in a way. Pretty sure the “betrayal” Belos mentioned to the Collector was just every iteration of the brother, starting with the first, ending up loving magic. So name his brother’s clones after the profession that the brother renounced. Plus I’m willing to bet Wittebane means “witches’ bane” which would mean the brother went against their family name by falling in love with magic, and a witch.

If you spend a long time analyzing the images in the background of this episode that are Belos memories, you will discover that one: Belos cut off his ears with a knife to make them look like that, and two: Philip's brother got a witch pregnant and settled down, but Philip got into a fight with him and stabbed him to death.

There's a couple other portraits that make it seem like Belos' brother, while at first was like him in their preset bias' against witches, actually found love in the Boiling Isles. He realized that they were in fact wrong about their opinions and that these people are just *people* . He's seen with another person in a couple different portraits, it looks like he's introducing someone to Belos in one of the portraits where Belos has a knife behind his back. It's possible that Clawthorne/witch who's firing spells at Belos after he murdered his brother for falling into cahoots with witches, or marrying one, was in fact the one he fell in love with and had introduced to Belos.
I honestly Dell Clawthorne and by extension Eda & Lilith are distant descendants of Phillip's brother. They have the same nose as Hunter as well as the statue of the brither, Hunter is theorized to be a grimwalker of the brother, and both Dell & Hunter have cardinal palismans.
It reminds me of Emilia and her brother from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

I've been calling Hunter being related to Eda since episode 1 of season 2, so if this implications is true, I'll be so stoked!
Something that I realized was that Belos basically confirmed that Hunter wasn't involved in his Day of Unity plan at all. He stated that if he told Hunter that the titan "had plans for him" then Hunter would do what Belos told him to. Obviously we knew Belos was being manipulative, but the fact that Hunter had so much faith in Belos and what his role in Belos's plan was, makes this so heartbreaking. Belos didn't actually care about Hunter's safety. If anything happened, he could just start over. He only cared because Hunter resembled his brother.

Edit: adding onto this, when belos told Hunter to stay inside the castle in Eclipse Lake, at first it sounds like he means well. But the more I think about it, it definitely had nothing to do with that. Darius confirmed that Hunter had like, no social experiences or connections with anyone outside the castle. So yeah Belos definitely was keeping him completely isolated from society, most likely to avoid another repeat of Hunter betraying him.
I mean Hunter is marked, so either he rebelled and was killed or he made it to The Day of Unity and was drained with everyone else...at least as far as Belos planned.
If he could have kept Hunter completely isolated, then who could Hunter go to? The back-stabbing coven heads who are either drinking the ghoul-aid or are in it for what it can give them and all seem to dislike the Golden Guard. The Boiling Isles residents that fear him. The wild witches that he has helped to hunted down and who probably hate him. The Bat Queen, when he has helped Belos kill so many palismen.
Belos' plan started being disrupted the first time Hunter had a half-way positive interaction with another person. He has slowly been building a budding support network. Belos in his hubris has thoroughly underestimated Hunter and what he is capable of.
He doesn't know how the power of open-mindedness (open-heartedness), love, friendship, family and understanding will be the blindspot in his plans.
Oh god, so much stuff to unpack...
Within Belos's mind, there were at least 16 masks. That means if we average the hundreds of years Belos has lived, we can assume that the Grimwalkers never lived past their 20s.
Belos was a witch hunter and named Hunter...Hunter. He named him after the purpose he wanted his brother to fufill.
You can see in the background paintings multiple images of Belos and his brother. His brother seemed to have fallen in love with a witch, which caused Philip to kill him with knife. It's possible the witch was a Clawthorne, given the repeated bird imagery associated with Philip's brother, and an ancestor of Eda, Lilith, and Dell.
And as someone above pointed out, it was Eda's Mother who mentioned that _her_ Grandmother 'knew of' the human. So we can somewhat figure out the generations lining up to fit.
Hunter's Palisman is also a bird. Never saw that connection before.
It was the reassurance from Luz that sold it for me the pleading tone: "It's gonna be fine. You're gonna be okay." And the fear in Hunters eyes. Like wow, I honestly forgot it was a Disney show for that moment thought they would have it be such a gut punch for Hunter to die.

My thoughts while and after watching this episode:
- Hunter. His name was Hunter. It was always there. He's a witch, Hunter. WITCH-HUNTER.
- Hunter wasn't entirely wrong "Belos never having done anything worthy of guilt". I mean that's not wrong, he doesn't feel guilty about anything he's done.
- I didn't want to be right about all these theories, Hunter is a grimwalker, one of many, Philip killed his brother (I don't even know if it's his brother; watch it be a twist and he was in-love with Hunter but had internalized hate which lead to jealousy, I call the original one Hunter because his original name wasn't revealed) and all the grimwalker clones, Philip/Belos being a monster, I didn't want to be right, not like this.
- I was thinking back since Elsewhere and Elsewhen that Philip being Belos and him hating witches, this is going to sound super-specific and super-weeb, there are probably more popular examples but this popped into my head first because I recently finished watching it. I was jokingly thinking that "oh maybe it's like the Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest" where demons spent centuries subtrefuging their way in human society to rewrite knowledge and make the stronger kind of magic go extinct and appear weaker (long-story-short: there's all kinds of magic, aptitude determined by 4 crests, there was a great hero with the strongest magical crest, he reincarnated himself to the future where he expected to fight the demons when human magic could rival them, he could've won back then but it would've been a pyrrhic victory, only to find-out that all the human knowledge on magic is ass-backwards, it's commonplace to speak incantations when you don't have to and it's considered the most powerful, and his crest is now considered the weakest). I fucking hit that nail on the head. I got blessed by Apollo for a brief moment.
- Damn, if this wasn't on Disney and automatically marketed for kids, god imagine if they had a higher age-rating to work with. Just the souls of all the Palismen Belos absorbed, it's now different than just him absorbing their magic or life-force, he's been devouring their souls. God, and the knife-fight.

Well I think it's very telling that Luz thinks it's his guilt while Hunter thinks it's his innocence, because it sets up how both of them are wrong but in different ways. Hunter has followed Belos literally for as long as he existed, so he can only see what he's been told until he's shown the truth. But Luz, as inner Belos himself will point out to her, isn't much better. I think It's highly implied that Luz is actively deceiving herself since the beginning of the episode, and I mean the night market, not just being in Belos's mind. When Eda asks her who is Belos, Luz looks uneasy, almost guilty. My guess? After her interactions with Philip and seeing what his unfinished glyph combos can do when completed, she has a hunch. But it's a hunch she doesn't wanna admit or acknowledge in any way. When she's in his mind she keeps seeing the evidence pile up to back up her hunch, but she can't, won't address it. She doesn't wanna admit it to herself because then it'll be real. Then the person she looked up to and turned to his writing for answers would have been the monster that tried to destroy the people she loved and took away her ticket back home. Luz is guilty, Hunter is Innocent, and Belos is neither of those things. He's a bad person doing horrible things while being so convinced he's in the right that he's incapable of feeling guilt. Now the fact that he's a child doesn't actually surprise me. At it's very core, Philip's mentality is that of someone who never learned to grow up because nothing ever truly forced him to. He'd been able to stay the exact same person for centuries by tricking everyone around him. At the end of the day Philip is an immature brat who obnoxiously demands everyone plays the game by his rules and throws a tantrum whenever they disagree. However, the fact that he can transform his inner self to look like anything? That's terrifying. Obviously someone who's lived as many lives as he had would have a complicated inner self, but instead of being made up of the different personas he's had, he's in full control of his inner self's form. I feel like this exemplifies perfectly the way he's been achieving all his goals. He's a master manipulator, and he will say and do whatever it takes to get you to believe him. He knows Luz wants to see the good in everyone, so obviously he takes the form of a scared helpless child. And to be fair, that was him at one point. I imagine kid Philip wasn't the most loved and appreciated kid on the playground, and his brother was the only one who had his back. But at the same time I don't doubt he was selfish and wanted praise, and was prone to lashing out whenever things didn't go his way. And those aren't terrible flaws for a child to have, but as we've discussed, Philip never grew out of that, just learned to make it seem more presentable. And that's the whole point of his character, of his inner self being able to look like any form he's ever taken. His real power is his ability to put on a show. The boiling isles got Wizard of Oz'd by a puritan prick.

This episode fucked me up a lot and the end??? As someone who deals with bad panic attacks I very much related to Hunter in that moment.
If Hunter runs into Darius in the woods it's a perfect set up for the Coven Traitor Trio getting the information they need, as well as a heartbreaking scene where Darius convinces Hunter that he is safe with them and they won't betray him.
To focus on one of the lighter parts pf this ep, I like that Eda gave Luz her jacket because "her kid's got cold shoulders"
(And then that saved Hunter bc of the glyphs in the pockets)

this was the first episode that had me in literal tears. I related to Hunter a painful amount and it hit too close to home watching him be forced to confront his gaslighting and indoctrination. anyways, this was really an incredibly wonderful episode.

Some of the portraits in Belos’s mindscape lend to my theory that Phillip’s brother fell for a witch of the boiling isles, and that was the betrayal that led to their falling out, the brother’s death, and Phillip’s attempts at creating a clone of his dead brother. Also my theory is that the brother started the Clawthorne bloodline, meaning that Hunter is a clone of Eda’s ancestor.
Lets talk about nice things this episode:
1. Hunter telling Flapjack that he loves him
2. Darius caring for Hunter
3. Raeda!!
4. Hooty being a matchmaker
5. Eda knowing the signs of an incoming panic attack and reacting appropriately
6. Eda extending a helpful hand to Hunter even though she doesn't like/know him
7. Luz opening up the Owl House as a safe space for Hunter if he wanted it
8. Darius, Raine, and Eberwolf working together and getting along
_"Eda's heart is like the island of misfit toys."_ - I LOVE THIS. (May not be the exact quote, went back but couldn't find it). It's such a perfect way to describe Eda & the type of people she draws to her. I have a feeling that Darius will probably either take Hunter in himself, or send him to stay with someone he really trusts (to avoid any suspicion from Belos).
I'm _really_ surprised by what they got away with in this episode! The horror aspect was SO clear, the art style (like for the souls of the palisman, which was a heart wrenching concept in itself) didn't spare any scary stuff to protect the sleep of children...
Luz brightened Eda's life and Rudolph's light shining through the storm gave the Island of Misfit Toys a new life
What I have gathered:
-Belos and his brother were raised during the 1600s, witch trials, puritanism rules times, believing that all magic is evil and people need to be saved from it.
-Somehow, while Belos was still a kid, he and his brother came to the demon dimension. It's possible that they found out a way to go back between the two worlds and that is why there is statues of adult Belos on the human realm? The "original hunter" was intrigued by magic and fascinated by magic, coming to find love in what could be a ancestor of Eda and Lilith. It's possible too that this witch was the one visiting them from time to time and they followed her and then couldn't get back.
-The first big betrayal of Original Hunter was to fall in love with a witch so Belos killed him.
-Clawthorne witch found out and cursed Belos, which made him dependant on paliman's souls to keep surviving this long. Sometimes later is when he writes his diary, probably with the full intention of being read by someone else that could help him, just the idea of getting back to the human realm, while in reality he was looking for a way to eliminate all magic alltogether.
-Now that I said all of this... it's possible that the curse of Belos is exactly the same as the one Lilith put on Eda, pass down from generation to generation. But of course, Lilith being a little kid didn't really understood what she was doing and Eda luckily managed to find an alternative treatment that didn't involved killing palisman.
If the Grimwalkers seemed to always betray Belos, did his brother - if the grimwalkers were made from him - betray him at some point?
Seeing how Belos thought Hunter asking what happened as a betrayal, I don't think they really betray betray him. The original most likely just went and date a witch and had a child with her and Belos though of it as the worst of the worst betrayal in the world.

Zeno Robinson is Hunter's VA, and he did a PHENOMENAL job in this episode.
The portrait in 26:42 may be a reason as to why Phillip murdered Hunter Prime; Hunter fell in love with a witch and may have started a family with her. Also explains the other portrait of the red-haired witch chasing Phillip & zapping him. And if she's a Clawthorne ancestor, well...someone better tell Lilith she punched a distant relative.
The unfortunate cycle of creating & destroying Hunter may be due to Hunter being a very CLOSE copy of the original: Hunter has Hunter Prime's heart & conscience. Phillip was trying to create a new Hunter who shares his horrifying ideals, but the Hunter copies keep ending up "disappointing" him. This may also be why Darius joined the Resistance; he knew what happened to his old mentor.
And I hope you prepare yourself, because King's backstory may be up next.
Bro, Hunter's breakdown was so sad and real, i dont even know what to say
I'm pretty sure the knife fight tableau was Philip and his brother fighting. At some point his brother turned against him, and Philip killed him. The image of Belos looking into the mirror afterward, I -think- might be him right after mutilating his ears with the same knife, so he can blend in with witches.
It also explains this long history of creating 'replacement' brothers...each of whom inevitably also turns against him when they realized who he is and what he wants. Just like the original. Belos has killed his brother so often now that he hasn't got any moral code left at all. He's rubbed himself down to the quick.
You know the writing is good when you _knew_ pretty much everything and the reveal is still devastating.
Just wanna throw in some light, joyful theories:
◾ Luz's Spanish lessons become a key factor in the fight against Belos.
◾ Amity said in K3oHD episode that house demons get weird after a few thousand years, meaning Hooty may indeed have watched the original fight but like in Clawthorne vs Clawthorne grudgby, was "an unbiased adversary hoot hoot", and watched the whole thing go dowait this isn't a cheerful theory
◾ Steve might rebel, but because all the coven scouts wear identical gear, he's untrackable.
◾ Luz and the Bad Girl Coven have a month to teach as many citizens as possible about critical thinking skills and skepticism. This ultimately leads to Luz applying things she learned in the Earth education system (but sidelined because boring), and leads an epilogue-era society into a new age of scientific discovery and Renaissance.
◾ Hooty said in his S1 episode with Gus that he was round in times of the sky being red. Perhaps Hooty was there in prehistoric times, per when Lilith and Luz looked in the time pool. Meaning it might have been Hooty who trapped/banished the Collector.
◾ Remember King's Dad? Chekov's Parent. Potential theory that he's somehow connected to the Collector. Or their common ancestor had something to do with containing the Collector, and King does indeed have a destiny to rule.

my theory is that, because Hunter doesnt know that Darius isnt on Belos' side, that he's going to run to to his captain and end up adopting Willow's "Caleb" nickname for him as his new name. they do still text each other afterall, and he knows she's NOT on Belos' side
also!! yeah, they implied the sigil draining stuff in the last episode, with the paper Raine got from Darius. (for anyone unaware: it says the plan is to drain people from their sigils to power something of Belos' on the day of unity! (we just. now have the stakes that people will probably die. oh god)) i think the reason Darius wants to include Eda is because she's amongst the very last adults with no sigils. so im glad Hooty essentially revealed to Darius, Raine, and Eber Wolf(? i think that's Beast Boy's name) that Eda is having trouble with "traditional" magic, because i did NOT want to watch Eda have to awkwardly explain she can only do glyph magic. they definitely know now that she cant help in that way. maybe glyphs will help? (also, it was very illegal that we couldn't see Raine's worry about Eda and her health visually in this episode, i wanted to see their face) im v interested to see what Raine and Darius and Eber Wolf do from here on out with their plot
also!! Dana released on-stream that Hunter doesnt know what a flapjack is, and even released a little audioclip of Hunter learning to trust Flapjack/palismans. if youd like subtitles for it, just look up the user biggytunaafish on tiktok and itll be the first video in the search results. it's very sweet and heart-wrenching. people have taken this and then theorized that, in the derby episode, when Hunter pauses and then Flapjack tweets and THEN Hunter says "Caleb? (insert the rest of the fake name he said in the episode)" that Caleb is Belos/Phillip's brother's name and that moment was Flapjack suggesting it to Hunter rather than a forename that Hunter came up with himself (hence why he looked at Flapjack and said "Caleb?" in a questioning tone). so not ONLY could it be Willow's nickname for him, like "Captain" is his for her, but it could also mean way more than just that! it's def an interesting idea

@@thethirdbill that is a good question, and one that Dana hadnt answered in the stream. but what many people believe in theory is that Flapjack was Belos/Phillip's brother's palisman, and that Phillip's brother named him Flapjack and that, in the audio, that's why Belos/Phillip got suspicious of Hunter's questions. because Flapjack was his brother's palisman (but again, that's just a theory. nobody knows for sure. so, again, good question! i'm really curious what rhe answer could be, especially if Flapjack is unrelated to Belos/Phillip's brother)
this theory also, potentially, adds to the theory that the witch Belos/Phillip's brother was in love with was a Clawthorne. because Clawthornes have an affinity for birds, and the brother would have married into the family (there's also stuff about Eda's dad carving palismans out of wood and Belos/Phillip's brother carving wood in one of the portraits). in another comment of mine in this comment section, i recommended a tumblr called Cloudy With A Chance Of Raine Storm, placed as a singular word, because they have a good compilation of the evidence of this said theory. i highly recommend it if you want to invest time into reading more about the theory. but that's one of the threads of not only how Flapjack got his name, but also for how Flapjack knew the name "Caleb" to suggest for Hunter to use as a fake name in the derby episode. because, the theory pushes, Belos/Phillip's brother's name was Caleb. and Hunter is a grimwalker of Caleb, and Caleb is (hypothetically) Flapjack's original palisman-holder. it would explain part of why Flapjack has refused any other witch: because, if palismans and their holders truly are linked in a soul-bonded way of "I choose you and I keep choosing you", then Flapjack would want to keep choosing his original holder. in every grimwalker's lifetime. Also I think this episode was wonderful in the fact that we all wanted our theories to be correct but we were all still shocked and to some extent horrified that they actually were. I know shows where confirmed theories are underwhelming and ones where confirmed theories are pure elation but only with The Owl House have I seen people be sad and scared because their theories were correct. It's amazing. Dana and her team did an amazing job with this show.
Hunter’s panic attack is actually pretty fitting in here.
After all Hunter just learned that his whole life was a lie.
He learned his uncle has been lying to everyone.
He learned about what happened to the other Golden Guards.
He learned his uncle, his only family is actually evil.
He learned Belos, his fellow uncle actually doesn’t care for him and tried to kill him.
He learned about the collector.
And who knows what he saw when he fell out of the mind.

My theory
The Clawthrones are related to “Belos”!
And with that last screenshot, I’m self confirming it!
His brother fell in love with a witch and the claw thrones are his descendants.
Phillips brother had a sparrow in that old book that neck beard guy had talking about the two brothers that disappeared (the episode where we meet V). The clawthornes all have bird related palismen. Ida’s father shows a resemblance to Hunter (same nose) and has hair is similar to Phillip Wittabane.
This episode just broke me, like even more than Agony of a Witch. I know what it's like to have a panic attack where you're worried about your future interactions with someone after finding out or doing something they didn't want you to. It was absolutely a fantastic episode and I always love seeing breakdowns and panic attacks in cartoons because it's realistic in those situations, makes the characters feel more human, and it's just relatable cause I would also totally lose my shit if I found out my uncle was making and destroying clones of me and lying to everyone in the town to steal their magic and kill them. I have no idea what's going to happen in the next episode and it's both exhilarating and terrifying. Also Luz telling Hunter he'll be okay will forever always break my heart.

I thought it was so cool how in Hollow Mind, they told us a story while there was a story already going on. I'm talking about how they gave us Philips backstory through the pictures in the background during the episode. That's really great storytelling 👍.
They really managed to make this the darkest episode of the show so far. Season 3 is already on that path.
Even though Hunters panic attack in this episode and also in Labrynth Runners are sad and painful to watch, it's also important to see something like that being represented in shows and movies because some people go through that in real life and also suffer from anxiety. His panic attack also shows how deeply hurt and traumatized this poor boy is 😔, sadly Belos will kill him if he goes back to the castle.
The way they write characters with PTSD in this show is really well done.
if Philip's brother fell in love with a Clawthorne that would explain why the portal door was near Eda's childhood house, the clawthornes are really known for palistrum carving tradition and skills which sounds a lot like carpentry, it really make's sense, Eda's father even looks like Philip when he was younger and he has a palisman that mirrors that of Hunter's... It's crazy to think about it

Two major things that make sense with this episode is that 1) Darius knew the golden guard before Hunter and that might explain why he’s apart of the rebellion because The GG betrayed Belos and died 2) Hunter’s name is Hunter bc he literally was created to help Belos hunt witches
My current headcannon is that Phillip’s brother was named Caleb and flapjack was his palisman and the grimwalkers are named hunter cause they’re witch hunters

Based on this, I think he told Hunter his name was Flapjack when he was starting to understand what he was saying.

in order to not think about that ending, my brain's been focusing on the setup tiny belos used to capture the palisman creature, it looked like a snare trap using the same potions eda uses for her curse??? (also the whole circuit thing reminds me vaguely of the glyph circuits)
and the owlbeast was ensnared by the collector (or perhaps a version of the collector? they didn't speak in verse in that flashback/dream) maybe I'm grasping at straws but there seems to be some connection with a living being getting turned into a monstrous transformation curse, and that curse manifesting in the mind. that said, eda's battle in the center of the mind takes place in a much more abstract setting than willow's or belos' memory trees, perhaps that's how the mind manifests to visitors and the experience of a curse is much different or takes place in a different location entirely?
so collector + soul/spirit = curse???? why are they called the collector? what's the deal with the owl beast? why were they trapped in stone? what is their end game?
anyhow, i've got corkboard and strings for days and i'm still in a rambling mess of a state, so hopefully this makes some form of sense

Remember that Luz not knowing that Belos is Philip is Dramatic Irony. She didn’t have as much knowledge about either of them as the audience does, since she can’t watch the scenes she’s not a part of.

Here's what I saw as Philip's backstory from the portraits. Philip and his brother were really close when they were growing up and became witch hunters. When they go to the Boiling Ilses the brother falls in love with a witch with red hair (Clawthorne?), got her pregnant. Philip disapproving and disgusted by this gets into a fight with his brother and kills him.
Props to the voice actor and the animators, that was a disturbingly realistic panic attack that Hunter had, jesus christ.
I wonder if Hunters comfort food is pancakes or oatmeal bars aka flapjacks. Also the portrait with the red haired witch shows her chasing off Belos with Hunter framing the bottom of the painting. perhaps he didn't fully die and was able to recover with some wild magic.
25:17 Actually, I think that image is meant to be Philip cutting up his ears to make them look pointed. You can tell by his appearance (clothes, hair, nose scar) that he's already taken on the Belos persona, so that image is long after he killed his brother.
I think I’ve been emotionally scarred from this episode. I basically sobbed over it, and empathize with Hunter and every emotion he felt, and understood the confliction and loss you feel when you’re in a toxic relationship. The trying to constantly justify the other person actions, and also thinking in the back of your mind if this person really is bad. Anyways to conclude, mans needs a LOT of therapy and I think I need to throw up a bit and then lie down.

I've seen people speculate on whether Phil is the older or younger of the two. I'm personally liking the idea that he's the younger. It would frame his constant recreation of the brother as a grimwalker as him initially wanting a big brother figure to protect him in the big scary boiling isles (hence, golden *guard*). It adds a bit of a twisted tragedy in that even after all these years, he's still clamoring for a brother that stays by his side and so he constantly remakes him, hoping that they don't end up betraying him again- like the first one.
i talked about it in the video, unless they're not related or "hunter" had a massive early growth spurt, phil is younger. 99% sure
Hunter's panic attack at the end was quite realistic, reminded of mine when I was in a kinda similar situation
Theory: Belos is going to make a new Grimwalker Golden Gaurd. We have seen all the ingredients needed brought up this season, and it's especially suspicious because that he had Hunter go hunt a selkidomus, probably to collect it's scales.
Hunter might have to face off against the next Golden Gaurd. Or a different scenario: if Hunter gets injured/dies he can be fixed using Grimwalker ingredients.
One interesting thing is also that between the two memories of Belos in the past you can see that the golden guard already changed apperances so it's probably a different one.

The brother was already dead when Lilith and Luz met Philip. At the end of the episode in Philip’s cave there’s a pile of human-sized bones under what appears to be early grimwalker instructions hung up on the wall. The scene with Belos looking in a mirror and the knife in a bowl is almost certainly when he cut his ears to look less human. He’s even got a hand covering one of his ears.
What always gets me is the moment where Hunters like “Maybe I’m stupid!”
He’d rather believe he’s terrible and horrible and dumb and wrong, than think that Belos could possibly be bad.
I feel like Hunter is going to end up getting a name change because I highly doubt he’ll want to be named after the very thing that killed his family.

where's the hate? it's brilliant and terrifying lol i guess i do hate that anything upsetting happens at all...but that's not realistic, nor what i want from a story

Hunter doesn't know what a flapjack is, Flapjack told him his own name. But...his last owner had to name him that, and no other witch would know what a flapjack is. Therefore, I can only assume that Flapjack originally belonged to Belos's brother (or his son?)
right, i remember when he told hunter his name in eclipse lake, my question is if the bird knows what a flapjack is....because that would mean he was with a human, or in the human world. (was this not clear? a lot of people felt the need to 'correct' me)

ok so ya missed a couple things : PORTRAITS!! so one of the portraits we can see in this episode is one of "Hunter" and that Clawthorne(?) witch holding hands, and the witch is seemingly pregnant in the distance and a very angry looking Phillip in the foreground, there's then a portrait showing Belos from behind holding the knife behind his back, approaching the witch and his brother, this presumably leads to the knife fight that Phillip wins, after which would follow the portrait of the witch attacking Belos.

I did honestly really want to believe that Belos did have even a little bit of actual affection and care for Hunter just because I think it makes for a very compelling dynamic. But when you stop to realize that Belos didn’t even really give Hunter a _proper name_ there isn’t any room left to believe Belos ever cared for him. Hunter is named Hunter *_because he’s supposed to be a WITCH HUNTER_* he’s not even a person in Belos’ eyes, just a tool. A casualty to be used and disposed of
Technically there is affection but its a very different kinda affection.
Because it seems directly stated the ONLY reason he kept making the grimwalkers was to have his brother again, but he wants them to fit a very specific description by being loyal to him completely (most likely a response because of how his brother "betrayed" him ).
So oddly he's making them out of some form of love, but also wants control over this new version of his brother

I think Luz was aware Phillip was Belos, she just didn't want to accept it in that moment by saying it... She was in denial just like Hunter
Belos's door is going to be the ticket home for Luz I guess. I'm just terrified now because I don't see a way for her to avoid choosing between worlds...
Belos could give her a final choice, actually, so to speak. If the vision shown to the Coven heads is true, he wants to bring the Titan to Earth entirely. That's assuming Luz's friends can survive the process. So the choice is actually, does Luz let him do his plan, if he guarantees the survival of some witches, even if they lose their powers. Just so Luz doesn't have to choose between Camilla, and Eda, King and Amity.
@@karlthorkildson4650 He was trying to kill witches back before he took power and he just described himself as a witch hunter so I doubt they'll be any left if he gets his way. Also, presumably the collector won't be too kind to the survivors if he gets free. I'm just hoping still even though it seems like the possibility of a happy ending is slipping away.

Darius is probably so interested in protecting Hunter now because he knows what happens to the grimwalkers and noticed that Hunter's slowly starting to stray off the path Belos wanted him on. He probably recognized this with the last Golden Guard, who was Darius' mentor, giving him a reason to have a soft spot for Hunter. Darius is totally fine with this, since he encourages Hunter to make some friends and get a Penstagram account, but knows that now, Hunter's safety is his responsibility or else he'll be disposed of as well. I really loved the scene with Raine trying to interfere and Darius stopping them until Hunter is mentioned.
