I wasn’t ready for the illusion anxiety attack/seclusion. It really was a depressing but beautiful visual. To see Gus having such strong emotions that his magic manifests them as a sort of a self hatred isolation is just… a lot.

I agree. Its also amazing to see the ways Owl House expands and varies the uses of each Coven's Magic instead of strictly sticking to one application. Causing Adrian and the other guards to severely hallucinate is a terrifyingly powerful ability, as you can't just ignore it like normal illusions.

I love that Hunter still refers to Willow as "Captain"/"The Captain." Like, normally, itd seem impersonal and all that. But with Hunters personality and upbringing, it really feels like its coming from a place of real respect, and a feeling of titles being important to convey that respect, considering hes started referring to everyone else by name. So on one hand, its a remnant of his past, sure, but on the other hand its incredibly sweet

It’s especially cool when juxtaposed with Amity’s view of Willow at the start of the episode. Where Amity is still struggling to see her as competent, Hunter knows immediately when it’s not Willow because the captain would never be scared, she’d be trying to reassure everyone else

This have made me realize something. Nobody would ever believe Luz if She were to tell people about the Day of Unity because, come on, its Luz the Human, it is not even the weirdest/most insane thing she ever said.
But Hunter, the Golden Guard, Emperor’s right hand Man, a Man from the inside, telling everyone Day of Unity is bad, many people will take him seriously, because he is/used to he always so serious about everything.
Losing Hunter may be worse for Belos than having Luz and Eda against him.

This show is incredible in the way it treats every characters issues as completely valid. Amity's father issues aren't invalidated by Luz's grief. Gus's self image problems aren't invalidated by Hunter's trauma. Each character is treated with the same care and weight, and I can't get over how incredible that feels to watch.

That and the fear of going back. When the two guards are talking to him you could see that Hunter was at the brink of a breakdown right before Gus activated the Glyph. And how he decided that he hid in school and changed into his flyer derby uniform probably because it was the only other place he felt connection safety and probably the library too. he's always been shown to be a kid who learned alot from book and he was hyper focusing on trying to figure out who and what he is with all the grimwalkers books back there.

    1. Hunter is wearing the bandana from Hunting Palismen, and the uniform from Any Sport in a Storm, he is getting rid of everything that connects him of the golden guard and the emperor’s coven, not just as an attempt to hide but things that have meaning to him, those are the first things he wore and acted for himself
    2. The brown spot on his hair could be connected to three things, one, he tried to dye his hair to hide his identity, but couldn’t go through with it, two, to represent the burn spot from Hunting Palismen, three, tried to dye his hair as an act of rebellion to Belos, from the line “you looked the more like him”
    3. Luz knows Hunter is in Hexide (just let me have this, I originally thought Hunter had his phone, and they texted each other, but now that I think about it that’s not likely but eh), this kids get each other to some level, I can see Luz understanding Hunter needs space and not telling others where he is
    4. Hunter stayed away from the owl house to try and draw less attention to it, keeping them safe from the emperor’s coven
    5. Gus eye illusion magic seems to work similarly to intrusive thoughts
    6. Hexide is now openly rebelling against the emperor’s coven, the only thing between them and bellos is if the guards will tell the true of what happened
    7. It appears that all the coven heads where aware to some level of Belos treatment of Hunter, since the illusion head used him to scare him, the only ones who seemed unaware are the guards, since Lillyth didn’t know, and the guards seem to genially be concerned for him and tell him Belos is worried

I really like the bit of subtle storytelling with Matt in this episode. Back when he and Gus weren't friends, he dissed Illusions as a weak kind of magic. In this episode he is multi-tracking Construction and Illusion, most certainly because he saw what Gus was capable of back in the Illusionist Graveyard and, as he became friends with Gus, Gus probably showed him more of Illusions to get him interested in studying it as well

  • @chromaticcaos
    @chromaticcaos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Gus is scarily powerful. He got moved up multiple grades, he can create an illusion the size of a school purely on instinct, and the scene with the glandis kids was strait out of a horror movie. He was able to make it look like her magic wasn't working with illusions.
Now he has the coven heads little magnifying glass which I think was mentioned as an amplifier, it honestly sounds terrifying.

Ok the episode was amazing and important (obviously), but what I can’t get over is how goldric shippers spent so long theorizing and creating all these different cute/sweet/lovely ways the two might meet, and then their first canonical meeting is just Ed going “have you ever sneezed with your mask on???”

I loved the Willow and Amity subplot, because that was something that's been implied about what their friendship was like in the past, even if we didn't see it. Willow was a weak witch and Amity was powerful. They were best friends, and Amity would defend Willow to the end. When they stopped being friends she became one of her biggest bullies, and she feels guilty and responsible all at once. It makes sense for her to try to fall back into the role she occupied in their friendship and even more sense that she needs to believe that everything can be the same as it was. It's also a nice follow up on Willow's facial expression in the coven day parade episode, cuz I thought her face while Amity braided her hair seemed not entirely concerned but not completely content either, like there was still unspoken tension. Which yeah, obviously, but it's nice that it felt addressed then and got directly addressed now. It also makes sense for Amity because she's still learning what she did in eclipse lake, or rather unlearning the idea that she needs to be useful to be deserving of anything.

I think the timeline of “Labyrinth Runners” and “Edge of the World” are in the same time-zone due to a few factors:
    • Eda saying Luz is finally ready to talk after a few days/weeks = Hunter being in Hexside for a few days/weeks surviving on snacks
    • Hunter running away from the Owl House at *night* in “Hollow Mind” = Hunter being found in the *day* in “Labyrinth Runners”
    • Luz, King, and Hooty could’ve been on the other side of the world in “Edge of the World” as a “disappearance” ≈ Amity, Willow, and Gus not knowing where she is
    • Coven Guards showing up after Belos’ invasion on the mind from Luz and Hunter in “Hollow Mind” in the daytime (so while Luz, King, and Hooty are on their way to the island and Amity, Willow, Gus, and Hunter, are at the school)

Re: Amity and Willow, while it worked overall, I feel like it needed a bit more time to really shine? It felt just a little rushed. Like it was supposed to be an A-plot of an episode and not a B-plot. I'm guessing that's because they had to try and fit as much stuff as possible into what little episodes they got, thanks to season 3 getting shortened.

    • @melonsaway3929

You might be right. Or at least, a B/C plot running across a few episodes and growing.
I guess hands have been forced at this point. The "tell us everything" close also suggests the A plot is getting a bit of compression too.
This said, the Owl House is really good at time management, so that's to their credit.

I absolutely love the shot of Bump and the three-eyed teacher immediately stepping forward and shielding Edric when the first illusion was revealed. I'm pretty sure it's the first time they openly step up to say that enough is enough and they will not let their kids be forced into something like that. They have just declared full-out war on the tyrant, and it came absolutely natural. They knew what was right and did not hesitate
I had to flee my country because our revolt against the tyrant still hasn't succeeded (yet), but while I was there, my friend's university staff would just sell their students out and let the regime's enforcers in to apprehend them, and it's just- It's a lot

I freaking love this episode and here’s my little rant on why.
I have never seen a character like Gus before in any kind of media and in this episode when we dove deeper into his struggles and his experiences I realized how much we are the same. Rarely have I seen characters like this who are ahead, most of the time the main cast is all the same age, and for me I’ve always felt so othered by myself being ahead two years. Then the piece that Gus is so smart and so talented but he still struggles and beats himself up all the time like, why can’t I do this? Why do I keep failing? I’m supposed to be the smart one. When there is a character who is ahead they always seem to be just a genius and that’s there character. This hits me so much because even though everyone tells me how smart I am I’m constantly doubting myself.
Seeing a character who I saw myself in so strongly the issue of representation really clicked for the first time. I never realized how much I not just wanted but needed to see Gus and needed to see that I’m not alone until I saw this episode. I think now I understand how powerful it is to see a character working through the same things as you. It just made me feel so strongly that we need more things like this and I love this show so much.
It makes me so sad that there isn’t going to be much more of this show because on top of this specific issue that I connected with the world needs these messages of work through things at your own pace, it’s okay to not be okay, and true friends will be there if you need them. It’s so powerful and so much and I just love it.
Anyway that’s my little thought rant maybe I’m just projecting idk.

Not sure if you noticed but Emira also got into multitrack - both healing track and illusion track. Hard to tell since they're just different shades of blue, but it's really cool to see more students embracing "wild" magic!

Just when I think my respect for Bump can't possibly grow any higher, this episode happens
I love that we got to see Willow and Amity patch things up even further, and what I love even more is that Luz wasn't even there as a catalyst this time! They've done it all on their own! They've both come so far
I'm glad this show is teaching us how to deal with anxiety attacks, because the way things are headed, we might need it by the season finale /hj. In all honesty though, I'm glad more shows address anxiety, trauma, and mental health-related topics these days - like when Steven Universe Future showed us it's okay to seek therapy
Gus and Willow origin story is something I've been wanting for so long, and I'm so glad we got to see at least a bit of it, even with the time constraints!

I must admit it was an excellent episode. At last we could see a development of Amity and Willow's friendship, as well as Hunter and his redemption added to the great power that Gus has, that is really important because if the coven leader was defeated by him, Gus has everything to be a coven leader in the future. What a great episode, let's hope to see Hunter soon. Greetings to all!

Hearing the Illusion coven headwitch's name I immediately thought of The Portrait of Dorian Gray. I'm wondering if those rings or somewhere else on him there's a bunch of those "makeover-y" thingies Ed & Em used in Reaching Out. And I'm also curious what's his "serious angry" mode. Darius is a goop monster, Eber's just a freakier monster .... hmmmm

This gotta be my favorite episode so far. Really well done. Probably wasn't originally imaged to be all told in one episode, and they did a fantastic job handling a lot of plot points and a lot of characters developements, all in one episode, without feeling strange or rushed. So much happens in just one episode, I felt it was way longer than it usually is, despite being the same length as always, and still I could watch so much more. Is really a shame that the series were shorted, but at the same time, I can't help but wonder if it was more episodes it would have the same impact (you kow that thing about how way things were is what makes them what they are, every good and bad part).

I know this may have not been the intention but from what I have seen POC do get alot in thier head about living up to society/family's expectations and don't seek outside help and hold it in til it explodes in different negative forms. In alot of POC culture it is common to keep issues to one's self, to not seek outside help etc. So to see Gus getting help for his anxiety and finding solace with another guy is beautiful and wholesome. It may have not been the intention but I still love this show and all its little things.

Honestly I would have loved more time and emphasis for the development of Gustholomule's friendship, even my own shipping tendencies aside, but I realize that's likely one of the things that was rushed and cut for time when Disney decided to cancel the show. Still, I love the subtle acknowledgement of it in the background with little details like Matty multitracking into the illusion track, which is not only influenced by and indicative of his friendship with Gus, no doubt, but also really fitting for his character. (and to be an annoying shipper for five seconds, his blush as he puts the ripped blue sleeves back on? I'm sorry I'll stop). And also the single but very noticeable picture of Gus and Matt with the latter in a party hat that's in the collage of friend photos. It conveys the idea that this friendship is new for Gus and maybe not as deep as the ones with the people he's had longer to develop and get to know better, but the fact that it's among the pictures of all those people means Matt is just as important to Gus as any of them, and that when considering who his true friends are, he's certain Matt is on that list

oof, as someone with Daddy Issues(TM), i really felt that panic attack Hunter had when he heard Belos was looking for him and when his fight/flight/freeze/fawn response to seeing Belos was Freeze. that was deeply relatable and i just want to protect my new son. also all the blushing around Willow was 10/10 (his ears even turned red around around the real one!!). i love that theyre taking advantage of how Hunter wasnt present for Willow's growing pains of finding her place of strength; he doesnt have that history of her being scared or "weak" and in need of protection in his mind at all. "She wouldn't be afraid of me", like jfc, that made my heart flutter with pride ♡ i loved that they made that lack of history, the fact that this relationship (platonic or romantic) being NEW, have an emotional pay-off. i did not expect that and i loved it ♡♡♡ im really glad Hunter is becoming a member of the group; i havent felt like this about a redemption arc since Zuko in ATLA. and i loved that they used this episode to show how, yes, the past two episodes have given weight to the cyclical nature of abuse, but this one shows how there's a cycle of compassion too through that breathing technique!! i loved that!
additionally, the detail of Hunter whistling bc of the gap between his teeth made me laugh. i also have a gap between my teeth. that (and hard "S"s sometimes) makes me whistle without meaning too sometimes too lmao
also, as someone who is often infantalized due to a mixture of my personality and disabilities, i really felt Willow during this episode and yet very much understood Amity since a lot of people in my life act/have acted like her with me. sometimes being protective is being patronizing. i really love that Willow gets to have this personality that attracts that "must protect" energy, that she is so feminine, yet she gets to talk back to it and correct it because she knows herself and knows when she can handle something. (i also am perpetually always in love with how she isn't skinny like a lot if the other girls her age. i feel like that's a detail that gets ignored abiut her design. we love getting to see fat characters be seen as badass and desirable. 10/10) i also love that the Owl House didnt make her and Amity's relationship perfect after that one braiding moment. it would have been easier, but they found a way to make this tension feel cathartic and really natural. i love it ♡
also, so much of this show is Pay Attentiom To The Right Eye?? there's Flapjack's scar, there's Bill's pinpoint pupil with no iris on his right eye from the last episode,, the rain cloud with the lightning bolt-shaped mark through it (which, the daggers Belos and Bill used being lightning bolt-shaped makes me nervous about) that Eda carved into Raine's violin, Belos' green scar over his right eye (that's also vaguely lightning bolt-like in shape), etc... (You can even add Eda and Lilith's eyes to this list if you want to. It might JUST be a visual way of showing they share their curse now, but it could alao maybe be something else in tandem with that? i dunno) also, maybe not along that string of thought, the plate of the Collector in the last episode had a lightning bolt-shaped crack through it; and when the Collector's blanket was put over King's head, and Bill raised the dagger, the silhoutte of the dagger on the blanket looked like a lightning bolt going through the right eye. and now there's Gus' blue eye throughout this episode?? it makes me Not A Big Fan of whenever eyes are blacked out or silhoutted in this show (eg. Belos' brother's dead body in silhoutte in the portrait, or Belos' own portrait where he's holding the side of his face and his eyes are fully in shadow, both being in the Belos' Mind episode). also, we still dont know why King's eyes briefly glowed in the last episode during the Collector ceremony or what that glow meant.. mmmhm, much to think about...
also!! thank you for noticing all these details, like what books Hunter was looking through! i didnt even think to look at that! it made me watch back the episode and take "Well, you're a witch. Un-spell it." totally differently; he's seperating himself from the idea of being a witch! that felt very validating in a "if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will believe itself to be stupid" way. i know when i got some of my disabilities diagnosed, or at least had a name for the symptoms that wasnt just "me not trying hard enough", it gave me a real sense of relief in how im not able to do things others can. i really like that Hunter and his hang-ups about not being able to do magic, even tho having a palisman definitely still helps him, can still be read as an allegory for disability that way (which! i love how many disabled and disabled-coded characters this series has!!) that was so heart-warming and is a detail i never would have picked up on without you, thank you! (also, it inspired me to look into Hunter's fears and most are Belos, both from the Belos' mind episode and outside it, but one is of the shot of Willow in jail with her back turned to him from the flyer derby episode!! this guy really put Hurting Willow on the same tier of fears as his abusive uncle, and it made me laugh a little with how A Bit Too Real that felt. goddamn..
also in my "Bill Was Right To Look For Details, What Else Can I Find" inspiration hunt: i also like that they keep bringing up how sensitive Hunter's hands are (his high-five with Gus versus his handshake with Willow). i wonder if how we've never seen him with his gloves off is because of something to do with his grimwalker status, but also i know from experience that anxiety causes chronic pain. and mine, personally, really flares up in my wrists and, as a result, makes my hands and under-arms REALLY sensitive. so i now have a chronic pain hc for Hunter, whether thats bc of grimwalker or trauma reasons (im leaning towards the latter until proven otherwise, most likely for Projecting Reasons but shhh), i dont know, but im happy to have it ♡ i saw a couple of people talking about it on social media too, so that felt very validating lmao
thanks again for the fun video, Bill!! i love seeing your thoughts on the video and your reactions are always really fun. this episode was definitely worth cussing some characters out over, and your decision to stop censoring yourself in order to do that made me laugh. and you had some REALLY great thoughts as always. big thanks for the video again, it was a really fun time :)

my heart also fluttered at that scene too. He is so sure and confident in her as a person and her character that he saw through it. also how he's wearing his flyer derby uniform.
I also love the little detail if him reading up on grimwalkers. He always references to himself reading this and that, so I imagine researching topics is a form of coping for him.
As for his hands. I've been wondering about them for a while. I have a sneaking suspicion that they are probably damaged in some way. his facial scar has never been addressed or his ear nick and his hands are the easiest things to hide. I'm not sure if they are very sensitive but at the moment I feel more like he's responding to an unusual stimuli. Only because he has shown alot of dexterity and being able to conduct hand to hand combat with an hand held item. But I have no doubt he suffer from something chronic otherwise he wouldn't constantly have bags under his eyesm

I find it weird how no one is commenting on just how great of an addition Adrien Graye is: he spoke little but I love how we can see the struggle of someone who is trying to convince themselves that all is good since they can focus on their craft with lines like "People say it is a waste of talent to fool children but a real talent know to do the best with what he's given" or something along those lines.
I know so many well meaning people that have this struggle we all have with the systems and kind of choose to focus on themselves and how they can thrive in it, and I don't blame them, but between it feeling like I'm "ungrateful" for abhorring the system and simply knowing it would be easier if I just let the current take me, I feel like it's a great acknowledgement that these people aren't exactly "bad" for bad's sake, they are "just doing their job", trying to get by like all the rest of us, propagating the problems for fear of losing their "positive" environments.

Oh yeah, Bill, have you heard "Hunter's Notes" yet? It was from a few months ago, during a charity live-stream Dana and some other artists from the show did. She played 3 special audio clips for 3 characters that the voice actors recorded: "Lilith's Letters," "Hunter's Notes," and "Luz's Diary" they are all really good.
"Hunter's Notes" was actually the first time we learned Flapjack's name. (Also, that he has no idea what a "flapjack" is. Lol)
