Samuel Johnson didn't publish the first English dictionary until 1755. Prior to this all spelling variations were correct, meaning Jane didn't misspell Queen as it wasn't standardised during her lifetime.
Aside from his abolitionist views, Dr. Johnson was quite batty. He was so obsessed with that dictionary that he ignored his wife's affairs and even committed murder. And then the original dictionary was destroyed by some idiot named Baldrick.
Lady Jane is a very interesting topic, Some says her parents manipulated her with help from the Duke of Northumberland, She was just just a girl who loved books.
Every time I hear her story i get angry on her behalf. I even feel for Mary here, cause in the end if Jane's family had behaved she might have lived longer as it seems Mary didn't want to order her death. But there were so many power hungry idiots around Jane, Poor thing...
She had no desire to be Queen. The Dudley’s wanted power and dragged her into it. I’ve even read that her marriage was a ‘love match’. Her husband wasn’t even interested
Back in that time period, people even spelled their own names differently. For example, Boleyn and Bullen were used interchangeably sometimes within the same document or sentence - by the Boleyn family as well as other people. So, spelling 'Queen' in a different way does not reflect lack of education or intelligence.
I actually love about a 20 minute walk from the house where Lady Jane grew up in Bradgate Park. She’s a bit of a local legend here but sadly far less known in the rest of the country.
Henry 's will only made Jane an heir to the throne of his so and both his daughters took the throne and died without heirs. It was Edward not Henry who skipped Mary and Elizabeth and made Jane his heir.
Edward was a male. Females were put on the bottom of the list of succession after the males. I think this legally changed to any gender by order of birth in the 20th century.
@@SafetySpooonDo you mean Edward? He wanted to exclude both his sisters because he did not believe in women rulers and they were both illegitimate. Lady Jane was of the same fanatical Protestantism as Edward, which also appealed to him.
Yes, we are used to Simon. But the material is still good and the presenter isnt bad. Its the presentation. Very dull and dreary background, excessively large and unnatractive microphone in the foreground. No lively colors or interesting things to draw the eye. Audio quality isn't great either. Hopefully this will improve....
6:40 Karl goes on about how Thomas Seymour was Jane Seymour’s brother so close to Henry that way but completely skips Catherine Parr was Henry’s wife. 😂
The portrait shown of Mary Tudor at 13:08 is that of Mary Tudor, youngest sister of Henry VIII and not his daughter Mary I. Jane was Queen for 13 days not 9. Her spelling of the word Queen is totally accepted since at the time spelling was flexible and there was not only one way to spell any given word
Hunsdon is in Hertfordshire which last I checked was in East Anglia and not near the Welsh border. Is someone getting Hertfordshire and Herefordshire confused?ETA: Both she and Guildford Dudley are buried in The Church of St Peter Ad Vincula (the church within The Tower.
Correction, she was a queen of England, not the queen of the whole of Britain. The first person to become the monarch of the whole of Britain was James VI of Scotland, when he also became James I of England in 1603. I thought being an Englishman you'd know that.

Karl, Karl, Karl, Quene was a perfectly acceptable form of spelling the title at the time. It wasn't formally spelt as Queen for some time later. As much as you read english you really shouldn't comment on olde (pronounced old not old-e) english esp as you struggle to pronounce some modern English 😆
Cool info, but breaking every 30 secs to explain. “Yeah this is weird” or “it kinda sucked back then” really doesn’t add anything. Like saying a joke and stopping midway through to explain “this is just a joke by the way”. Guess I’m just spoiled by Dan Carlins hardcore history.
Why is he talking like there's a race to just get the video over with??! Didn't make it very enjoyable to watch. And please stop harping on her education being lacking because she "misspelled" the word queen. I'm thinking whoever wrote this episode is the uneducated one if they don't realize that in this time period, spelling one word with multiple spellings was extremely common. Goodness. Also...history is full of people who make mistakes and do notorious and horrible things. Every country in ALL time periods has humans who do these things. So if these people truly believe "British history sucks", tell me why they're bothering to make these videos in the first place? Maybe it's this excuse for a documentary that sucked, not so much British history 💁♀️😅
When is the grown up presenter back? You know, the one who can pronounce eschew and isn't gobsmacked that folk from history had different notions than us.
@@joeobrien196 Yes I do!!! The people who run the channel NEED TO KNOW WHY people unsubscribe or are about to unsubscribe. That way they can make the necessary changes. You gotta feel sorry for Jane here. Being queen was obviously everyone else’s idea not hers. She was like her cousins, A pawn of her family
Ah Tudor England, That time period where even 15 year old girls lost their heads
Seemed like a strange time to live
I wouldnt want to live back then !😮@chriswalther7329
Well... she was being passed around more than the Mashed Potatoes at Thanksgiving Dinner.

Meanwhile in Ancient Egypt: “Hold my beer”
At least Henry only thought about marrying Henry Fitzroy to Mary, he didn’t actually go through with it.
We need to stop calling her LADY Jane Grey.
She was crowned and coronated as a QUEEN.
She at least deserves that recognition and respect.

It's not inaccurate: Jane's death after giving birth to the longed for son meant the Seymours gained a lot of prestige, and they exploited that.

Please do a biography on adam smith the father of economics
British history doesn’t “suck” it’s interesting and complicated
Any chance for anne boleyn?
Thanks for the video 👍🏻
Do one on John von Neumann next!! Severely underrated figure

Should do one on Mannerheim… super fascinating chap…

You still can’t be Catholic and monarch because you are also head of the church of England which is Protestant
"The demise of the device!" 🤣
Please make a video about another executed British Monarch Charles I
"Quene" was not "spelled wrong"; spelling was not as codified as it is today.
I haven't seen this channel in a while, what happened to Simon?
It’s okay man my last name is “Touchstone”
Is Simon Whistler dead 🤔

Love you, Karl. One of the few simone replacements i never click off of
So was she the first Queen of England (besides Matilda)?
Wh-

Where's Simon gone?
Interesting video

So how small we talking? 🤏🏾
What’s the name of the place where she was born again, pikie?

Why can't this host have had half the days she had?

Biographics is now so terrible….why can’t Karl just read the script and not try to be funny…
I like the other guy better
5:50 not weird at all🙄
Oh, if there was only a simpler word for "skeletonized head"...
I like eggs
Someone remind me, when and why did Simon stop presenting on this channel?
0:04 #LinusMediaGroup has a Sarah *Butt* . So feel no shame with a cool name.

Yes
I would make a name joke but I'm too transfixed by your accent.
