  • Here is my cover of Tony Peluso's fantastic solo. I recently had to re-learn this solo for a Carpenters theatre show so I thought I would post this up. I used a the face fuzz box model on my Pod HD400 with no speaker simulation. The original would have been a fuzz box straight in to the mixer. Not my favourite sound but to keep it sounding like the original I did the same. Enjoy!
    Gear Used:
Fender Deluxe HSS Stratocaster - Bridge Pickup
Line 6 Pod HD400 into Mackie Onyx 1220i mixing desk
    Recorded in Logic 9

I’m a Zep, Stones and Who fanboy and I STILL rate this as the most melodic rock solo I’ve ever heard.

  • @Stevo_Drums

At the risk of being repetitive, the way I always understood the story of this solo was that Richard Carpenter asked Tony P if he could lay down a heavier guitar solo on this tune because he wanted it to sound less "pop" and more "rock." In 1972, something like this was almost unheard of from a squeaky-clean pop act, but Richard wanted the "fuzz guitar" solo, and the rest is history. Probably the advent of the power ballad. Very well played, by the way.

This was indeed one of the greatest solo guitar riffs of all time, but never given the credit it deserved, by so-called music critics - probably because it came from the the squeaky clean Carpenters. And funny enough, the late Karen Carpenter is still acknowledged as having one of the greatest voices of all time. Well done, Dave, you nailed this song absolutely perfectly and proved that you are a great guitarist yourself.

Peluso is my favorite also. He's such a fabulous soloist, and once again proves that you don't have to play everything super fast; instead, it's vital that you play what is tasteful and fits the song, and no one does it better. I don't care as much for technical skills, as creative skills, but this dude certainly has an ample supply of both in his arsenal.

Nice someone has taken the time, this solo was groundbreaking in pop music. Richard carpenter, who suggested that the solo should have distortion, received hate mail from their fans. It's said that this song was the very 1st power ballad, combining a soft ballad with rock style guitar.
    Fantastic stuff ,

Thanks for this piece of magic. I revisited this song a couple of weeks ago. I was watching a youtube video interview with Richard Carpenter. He said that "their fans" thought that they had sold out. I never heard about it or remember the mini controversary this song brought about. I think even by that day and age standards those solo licks would have been pretty tame. Compare it to any Cream or Floyd or Black Sabbath or Deep Purple riffs. But people expect that type of guitar work for those bands. It was so different and surprising for that type of guitar work to appear on their middle-of-the-road music.

Good job! When I first heard that song way back when, I HAD to learn those solos. It took me forever to learn it, and I still make mistakes from time to time. I throw in a few little grace note trills (for lack of a better description) in some of the "empty" spaces, but I guess Tony wouldn't mind. He didn't play it "exactly like the record" live.
My favorite choice for playing it is on my Gibson Les Paul Classic through my Marshall JCM800 combo.
I didn't own a 335 until recently, and mine is just a Firefly copy. GREAT guitar, BTW!

What a fantastic rendition! I'm a professional pianist/organist but would give a small fortune to be able to play guitar like this! On the original Carpenter's song, the guitar has 'feedback' which I guess was planned? It's one of the best bits for me (apart from the hemiola rhythm towards the end!) and sends shivers down my spine. Could that be recreated at will in a performance or is is technically a 'fault'?! Thanks again!
