"There's No Dreams Here" ~ Cigarette Man: Life on Skid Row

  • "Cigarette Man" earned his nickname by selling single cigarettes on the streets of Skid Row over a span of four decades. He was born in the back of a station wagon to a single mother; he never met his father. When he was twelve years old, his mother died, leaving him to fend for himself. Aside from some short periods in foster care and prison, Cigarette Man's been homeless for most of his life. Cigarette Man is 66 years old.
Cigarette Man gets by in Skid Row by selling cigarettes, second-hand goods, and groceries that have expired past their shelf life. He sleeps in his chair or on the ground, forgoing the trouble of setting up a tent every night, only to be forced to take it down the following morning as businesses reclaim the sidewalk.
For those who have the chance to know him, he's a reliable source of street knowledge, a storyteller who makes any stretch of sidewalk his stage. Cigarette Man's experiences have been hard-won, yet he shares them as insight into human nature.
No one should live without adequate housing. Although the streets and homelessness are all Cigarette Man has known, he needs to be inside. Otherwise, he will end up being another homeless death statistic. This is where you come in. Cigarette Man will not go into a homeless shelter. He's been outside too long to go sleep on a cot in a dormitory-type facility. We all need to advocate for more affordable housing and to get homeless people the support they need.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I've never understood how so many people live a life of opulence, where they want for nothing, and it's been that way their entire existence, their entire lives. And then there are unfortunate souls like Cigarette Man who seems to have never gotten a shot at life. It's so unfair. Yet he survives, invisible, as most of us refuse to see him or acknowledge his very existence.

There are those with mental/psychological issues that go untreated. Too many of them are self medicating, and way too many are on the streets. Other homeless are fully capable of getting off the streets. There are many programs to assist them in doing that.
I ended up homeless. I can cite all the normal litany of woes: physical abuse, sexual abuse, drugs and alcohol abuse, divorce, etc. It's all bullshit. I made bad decisions knowing I was making bad decisions. I decided to stop making bad decisions. Retired at 50 from a six figure salary with a Fortune 500 company. 401k etc. Too many people living on the streets are choosing that life. Choose something different.

My opinion & Knowing is that we are an extention of from which we began therefore we are a creation & extension of that .... From which Poppa Cigarette Man in himself from belief & faith in THE CREATOR is continually & consistently creating ways & means to get through each day . Regarding his needs being met , I'm not stating there the OBVIOUS of a need for a home etc. I'm sending him from my mind & heart the intension of whatever he may need to get through each day he will be given that . Wether that be physical , emotional or spiritual for his mind , body & soul . I was taught from my grandmother that when we think our life is hard , there's ALWAYS someone who has it harder. Aswell if we can't DO something to make it better then we should at least SAY something to encourage or uplift otherwise say nothing at all . The intentions & acts of the heart is powerful so I will end by saying to ALL....... Whatever your situation or circumstances

Two things many people fail to realize is one: no one who is healthy perfectly normal and ok say you know what I feel ok and life is good, but that's not enough for me bc I'm greedy and amoral, so I think I'll go do drugs. People who chose to do drugs are not greedy or amoral, they are unhealthy and have trauma in some shape or form, if not many forms. And two: consciousness and the human psyche is predictable and acts largely the same in same circumstances (including biological factors and environmental factors) meaning if you had the same biological predispositions and experienced the same trauma, your brain would more than likely behave the exact same way and make the same choices. These people are not the problem with society. Our treatment of them is our problem from their parents and traumatizers to all of us. We are all humans with much more in common than not and I would hope no matter what my illness, health, status or ability that other humans would treat me with love respect and common decency. I love all humans and wish a good life for all of us, bc we all deserve it, and those who have experienced so much pain and hurt, maybe even more so than most of society.
I hope he finds permanent safe clean housing soon.💔😢

Dropped the family tradition of adultery while married to! Either use protection or do not fool around! I remember sitting in a club on a night off after a promotion in a college town and thinking my grandfather plus both parents would go to bars to fool around even though they where married plus thought to myself would you want your daughter to be pic up a boyfriend that way! NO! So I finished drinking and left! Would go out once in a while with male coworkers to drink a little play pool and would ignore the women wether too young or divorced! Grew up a stepchild lived with other relatives also! Went to 11 different school districts with no one else I knew and lived in 33 different homes since relatives moved a lot for cheap rent! Now just trying to finish fixing what medical I can get done with surgery!

Cigarette Man, those of us who have been homeless know where you're coming from. You're doing the best you can as any homeless person does. The homeless can't be put in one category, there are the mentally ill, addicts, and people with just bad luck who have zero support from their families of origin for whatever reason. But we're all human and we just keep up appearances no matter where we are in life. Keep your head high, Cigarette Man.

God so loves these people, I pray they love and know Him too, if so they have far more than the rich men on this cruel and miserable earth. There is no reason, other than power, control and greed of those in control, that anyone on this earth should be hungry and homeless.
Thankyou for showing these individual stories that show each individual as the special people they are.
May Gods' blessing and guidance be upon this man and all of his fellow 'neighbours' 💔❤️

The ones who judge those who are in bad predicaments, who are poor, disabled, addicted, in jail, homeless. those are the real villains, the ones who are classist, who judge, they’re the real villains of the story. My heart goes out to him.❤❤❤

Los Angeles waiting list is 53 months for your voucher! I live where it is 7 months! Then you have to find someone to take it! I live in a privately owned apartment who gets a tax credit for having a percentage of section 8 renters! All utilities are paid but expect one day they will make us pay that! Notice a lot of the mountain and pacific time zones require some or all utilities for renters to pay!

Wow welcome to the world… things cost money. Everyone has to feed the machine or they end up in a tent. Hundreds of millions of Americans have to pay for rent and utilities, plus insurance and car payments.

So tragic. I cannot help but admire their courage and resilience. I now think of them before I whinge about anything! Their wealthy government should do something to help cater to their most basic necessity, a roof- just modest tiny houses/apartments would do. Give them some dignity as human beings.

This man is a great actor. There is no way he has been through the things he has all of his life and so emotional. I do believe its possible he has been through all he says he has but he actually feels nothing except emotional pain. Its an act. He’s truly numb and faking the emotions
