To those saying this is confusing and not for beginners.. I think this video is for beginner mittens, not beginner knitters. As you can imagine, mittens are much harder than scarves.. I think this is more for people who can knit basic squares and rectangles and want to try easy mittens. If you have never knitted before, make a few scarves and potholders, learn how to knit and purl, rib, and stockinette. THEN try mittens. I have never made mittens before, but I have made multiple scarves and I know how to do the stitches I mentioned above. And I understand what she is saying. So I would kindly suggest one familiarize themself with basic knitting skills before trying this.

I love how seamlessly you tie together this pattern, this is one of the first knitting tutorials that seemed accessible to me as a self taught knitter(I started crocheting several years ago, and basically put together all of my knitting skills through experimentation). Though I have technically spent quite a bit of time knitting, I am still very new to the terminology. You make this look so easy! I have a request, if there is any way you could put together a video tutorial on most common stitches and their applications/ terms and techniques, like how you personally hold your work/needles, set up your work station, etc, I would really appreciate it.

Glad I’m not the only one confused. Thought mittens wouldn’t be this hard but considering I couldn’t really follow what was going on past the wrist part of the mittens I guess I should pick something easier lol.
I can kind of understand, but I have only ever done a knit and a purls stitch, so when you start calling out abbreviations of stitches I have never even heard of, let alone seen, it's very confusing. I'd love it if you made a video that was dumbed WAY down for the total novice.
Watch the American Knitter mitten video instead. You will have much more success. This video made even the most basic steps (such as casting on)seem much more complicated than it has to be. This video is definitely not for beginners or maybe even intermediates.
constructive criticism: when teaching the kfb (knit front back) you might want to go a little slower for beginners and people who have never done that stitch. Ive been knitting for 7 years and it still took me awhile tolearn how to kfb
I am confused at how to achieve 10 stitches between my kfbs. This part gets very confusing, I'm going to need to look for the written pattern to finish. Also, I am really questioning the 3.5 inches between the cuff and thumb. I may shorten this height after my practice mitten. I am thankful for the video
So I see a lot of comments on how this is a difficult video to follow. This was my first time knitting mittens and I found it to be super helpful! Not all on its own - but definitely click the link in her blog for the written pattern and use the video as a reference. There were some terms and stitches I didn't know, but once I looked them up it was easy to do. I would def recommend this to a confident beginner.
Very new to trying anything other than a scarf. Im not a person that can follow directions well but i managed to get my first one done. It slightly resembles a sock puppet due to running out of yarn and having to select another color
i’m stuck on how to rejoin the yarn. i’m trying to figure it out myself from the written and video tutorial but i just can’t figure it out. if anyone knows, please let me know! thank you!
If your teaching how to knit; please don't tell what you are doing ahead of time because beginners have no idea what you are talking about. We are trying to follow you but ,your talking about what you are going to do, instead of what you are actually doing. It is very difficult to follow you. This is by far the most confusing video tutorial.
I suggest that you look at the video from start to finish, especially if it's your first time making something. It works out better for you because then you know what to expect. It makes it easier for you if you look up and practice casting on, pearl stitch, knit stitch, binding off, how to pick up a drop stitch, increase a stitch and decrease a stitch prior to starting a project. You will need most of these to make a hat and scarf.
um... you could show the project from a slight distance at times.. it is very hard to ''see'' what you are doing. Showing it only up close makes me feel blind as I have to only listen very very closely. I have to choose a different video for my basic mittens. Even though they look great at the end of the video.
I followed all instructions and it was very good so thank you so much for that. thing is, i was doing it for me years old girl so i tried estimating the number of stitches and rows but it ended it disproportional. could you please help me with the numbers for a child size? thanks
Yeah, I think this is for people who know how to knit and are experienced with the easier projects (scarves, dish cloths, etc.) and want to move on to more difficult projects like socks and mittens.I recommend learning the different stitches, casting on, casting off, picking up and dropping stitches, etc. before knitting mittens!
You never explained how to reattach the yarn after you finish the thumb!! So many people have asked as well... it's really frustrating as I am completely stuck now and had to undo everything. 2 hours of work. Looking at the comments, I'm not the only one who had to undo everything. Just wasted an evening knitting something that will never be completed :(
You just have to google your question! There are so many resources and different ways to do it! I just use a slip knot... idk if that the best way but that's how I do it
How do you reattach the yarn 😭 I’ve been working really hard on this for a few days and then once we have to cut the yarn for the thumb now I’m lost...
Reattaching the yarn. Its tricky this is what i do. I take my new working yarn and tie it to the stitch just underneath where you are beginning leaving a 4 to 6 inch tail so you can weave it in later. I use a crochet hook or a large eye yarn needle to do that. Then simply start knitting with your new working yarn. When the mitten is done, just weave in that tied off tail so it wont show. They say that you should not use knots in knitting BUT with mittens the hands esp. kids hands move a lot. The last thing you want is a mitten unraveling while you are well wearing it. You could use a spit join if you are using real wool yarn but I use100% acrylic and spit joins dont work there. The knots I use to join acrylic yarn are the magic knot see youtube tutorials for instructions and the plain square knot for reattaching mittens and socks. Hope this helps.
hmm... could you do the whole video and not stop maybe? I don't really know what was going on! could you explain it so beginners can understand, I'd like if you could!
Am perplexed by the same question... right now I’m having a go just having tied a slip knot on the RHS of the thumb and knitting the LHS. I’ve then Untied the knot (or would have an extra stitch) and keeping a tightness on the loose end. Will let you know if this works or if the whole thing unravels!!
The directions didnt make sense, i had to figure it out for myself and they turned out HUGE (not that i did anything wrong, these are just huge mittens)
I had the same problem at first because we probably both have yarn that's a larger guage. She's using pretty thin yarn. I started with 30 stitches and then adjusted the rest to that number instead (so 30 cast on, reduce to 28 after the cuff, alternate knit and purl rows until 3.5 in., knit 13 then add a stitch until there are 6 in between, etc.). If you want to try knitting them again, I can give you the rest of the numbers I used.
Hi Megan. At 3:28, you say that you're gonna do stockinette stitching for 8.5cm. Do you mean that the entire piece of fabric will be 8.5cm, or do you mean that only the stockinetted part will be 8.5cm (so that the total fabric length will be about 12cm).

Hey I’m knitting my first mittens and I was wondering what you meant in the part where you say to knit 21 then kfb then knit 2 then kfb again and to repeat this same thing but you say until there are 10 stitches between your kfbs does that mean to knit ten stitches after you knit two and kfb again? Then kfb, knit 2, kfb again?
at 3:58, we are doing a purl stitch for the entire row that is 45 stitches? and then in the next row we're doing a knit stitch for 3.5 inches and then the rest of the row with a purl stitch right?
Great video...until you get to the thumb. It would be helpful to explain how and where to join the yarn after you break it for the thumb. Super lost and not sure how to continue
after you're done the thumb attach yarn to next stitch on left that's still on needle (right side row) and knit to end of row. Its same as though you're joining yarn to beginning of a row
Hi Megna I want make simple mittens with one Row knit and one Row purl. But like to know as I am still knitting process. Is it necessary to make rib before making Mitten. Cant I knit 1 row purl and 1 row knit without making Ribs? Pls reply me soon Thanks Rims1
Ok on the first line for the cuff I end in a purl stitch but it starts on a knitt stick, when i go onto the second row do i start with a purl stitch or knitt stitch?
I should have looked at the written instructions first because when I did the 3.5in I did it from the cuff. Instead of the cast on start. So I just knitted one big mitten
This video will not be good for beginners, but if you are experienced I would recommend watching it. I’m only a kid and this all makes perfect sense after knitting for six months. And if you don’t understand something, just go watch another tutorial on it because you probably haven’t learned it yet. This video is about making mittens, not going over what the purl stitch is or how to cast on. So don’t watch the video if you don’t no how to do those things and don’t blame it on her
what does it mean when you say 10 stitches in between kfb’s? does this mean you’re knitting ten stitches and then doing more kfb’s? i’m gonna have to throw out my whole project if i don’t get this figured out
Basic Knitted Mittens : After knitting up the thumb, and pulling the 22 stitches, Can you Confirm the total number of stitches at 44. This would be helpful to know before you start to knit the top of the mitten. Respectfully, Debbie Bloomer Kitchener ON Canada

I am a beginner, so I thought a BASIC mitten would be a good first real project. Sadly, I have no idea what all of these acronyms stand for. I could not even start on the first row because of it, but I think this would be a good tutorial for more intermediate knitters, 100% not for beginners.
My issue with this video is that it shows the more basic steps (like casting on) in great detail but lacks any exlplanation on the hardest bits

Really struggling with knitting past the first row. It gets tight and I’ve taken it out a few times.
Great video...until you get to the thumb. It would be helpful to explain how and where to join the yarn after you break it for the thumb. Super lost and not sure how to continue
after you're done the thumb attach yarn to next stitch on left that's still on needle (right side row) and knit to end of row. Its same as though you're joining yarn to beginning of a row
you didn’t say to measure the 3.5in from the beginning, now my cuff is huge
also for shaping the top, you said end on a wrong side row but then you showed yourself knitting the right side. which do i follow??
I'm a bit confused on the bit where it says KFB K2 KFB until 10 sts between KFB's. Can anybody tell me how I count sts between KFB's please. X
How many times do you do the KFB stitch thing?
How do I make a smaller size in this pattern?
So row 12 is purl and 13 starts the thumb?
Where do I find the pattern?
Hi Megna
I want make simple mittens with one Row knit and one Row purl. But like to know as I am still knitting process.
Is it necessary to make rib before making Mitten. Cant I knit 1 row purl and 1 row knit without making Ribs?
Pls reply me soon
Thanks

Ok on the first line for the cuff I end in a purl stitch but it starts on a knitt stick, when i go onto the second row do i start with a purl stitch or knitt stitch?
I’d be happy to try and help you. What row are you on?
What if your 11 and your hand is HELLA tiny, than how many stiches should you cast on?
I should have looked at the written instructions first because when I did the 3.5in I did it from the cuff. Instead of the cast on start. So I just knitted one big mitten
That's precisely what I understood as well 😭
How do I adapt this for kids size?
This video will not be good for beginners, but if you are experienced I would recommend watching it. I’m only a kid and this all makes perfect sense after knitting for six months. And if you don’t understand something, just go watch another tutorial on it because you probably haven’t learned it yet. This video is about making mittens, not going over what the purl stitch is or how to cast on. So don’t watch the video if you don’t no how to do those things and don’t blame it on her
you can just do this with straight needles too, right?
what does it mean when you say 10 stitches in between kfb’s? does this mean you’re knitting ten stitches and then doing more kfb’s? i’m gonna have to throw out my whole project if i don’t get this figured out
Basic Knitted Mittens :
After knitting up the thumb,
and pulling the 22 stitches, Can you Confirm the total number of stitches at 44. This would be helpful to know before you start to knit the top of the mitten.

Sorry, Purling not pulling.
slow down....... your explanations dont match the actions , cant even follow
how many stitches did you cast on?
how can u have 44 on the top if ur knitting15 between the increases
As I’m not a knitter…soon as you talk knitting language…kfb you lost me….I had hope to knit these glad some of you figured it out. We all learn different I guess…thx anyway😟
This hand Reminds me about Mittens Fluff'n' Stuff In Lalaloopsy
Shoot, so 3.5 inches incl ribbing means i just did 3.5 inches wrong. I started the 3.5 starting with the stockinette. Really!!!????
I am a beginner, so I thought a BASIC mitten would be a good first real project. Sadly, I have no idea what all of these acronyms stand for. I could not even start on the first row because of it, but I think this would be a good tutorial for more intermediate knitters, 100% not for beginners.
Well that was clear as mud. Sorry, but I was totally lost.
Dear Mam
How to cast a thumb while making mittens.
Reply soon
Thanks

How long do these really take to make?
i wanted to know the size os 11 year old but i figured it out myself
I like the mittens but it was VERY unclear
Fantastic!! Thank you so much!!
Hi, does this pattern work if I wanted to make this for a man?
yes these turn out huge, too big for my very big teacher, actually
I don’t understand what you mean by “knit until there are 10 stitches in between your KFBs”
awesome pattern btw
I need many many pairs of white children’s mittens can you give me a price
HOW DO I PURL BACKWARDS??? WTF
You should show this in the round
I loved it 🌼thank you
How long does your working yarn need to be? First time knitting XD
Working yarn is the yarn attached to your ball of yarn. You should start with a decent size ball of yarn.
