- Beryl hit the coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm with high winds and waves. It caused major flooding as it moved inland as a tropical storm. Strong wind gusts caused trees to fall and knocked out power for more than a million people. NBC News' Kathy Park and Bill Karins report.

Prayers up for the people of Texas , much love from the Caribbean ! I am aware of the American housing dynamics in regards to scalability of wooden houses but you guys may need to start considering more concrete structures . We are moving into unprecedented times with our climate
My thoughts too, because here in Jamaica we do concrete house and we were hit by category 4 and our damage was not as great as Texas, this is really great damage for a category 1.

😢 unfortunately Texas power line infrastructure is from the 1950s. they’re in the process of redoing all of it and having natural gas facilities as backups in the coming years.

Heard updates from family in Houston and Victoria today. Yes, fences blown down. No water in their houses .No damage to their houses. Everyone fine. Family in Oklahoma checked in. Just rain for them.

katrina did most of its damage and destruction when it was a category 1-2 hurricane and losing strength over new orleans. it had weakened significantly by the time it reached the southern part of the city, where most of hte fatalities occured. there were hardly any hurricane force winds recorded in the city. that didn't matter. the levees broke and the city flooded with 10-20 feet of storm surge. basically the wind pushed 10-20 feet of additional water into the city on top of the typical lunar tide. the remnants of these hurricanes can drop 5-10 inches of rain in a day.
Seaside living is a BLAST. Build back bigger and better ... Hurricanes will NEVER happen again ... !

I doubt there was a tornado. That's the same kind of damage we experienced in the Caribbean. People said it was like a tornado, but not a tornado. It was just so powerful. Jesus is Coming.

comparing the Damage in the USA and the Caribbean tells me we need to raise USA building standards. the caribbean got CAT 4 and 5 texas Cat 1 and the damage is worse
Tbf, Beryl was intensifying as it made landfall and intensifying storms can pack a stronger punch than storms that are "stonger" but weakening or maintaining strength up to landfall. The storm was also very impressive structurally for just a CAT 1 as well with a clear defined eye and eyewall at landfall.
Roofs should not be being lost in a cat 2 its just that.
