How to Grow SWEET PEAS in WINTER

  • Now that the week of really cold weather is behind us, we can finally get our English Peas planted. We usually do better with these planted in the fall, but we're trying to get a super-early start this year in the backyard garden.
    We'll also be incorporating another cover crop of mustard to biofumigate our soils and provide some natural pest control for the organic garden. Join us to see how this Caliente 199 mustard differs from the Mustard Trifecta Blend that we incorporated a few weeks ago.

    My heart smiles hearing about your family -- it IS a family ! I’m in my 70’s & was thinking earlier today that I cannot remember anybody really SMILING in my home when I was a kid. So, on occasion, I “steal” a smile from you & your family, since I know that on line you’re smiling at all of us. I’m sending big smiles back to all y’all! 😁

    Here in 6b, old timers will say, Plant your peas on St. Patrick’s Day. If the ground is workable, that’s when I try to get mine in. Germination time is variable, but the rate is usually good. This is also when I get started on my seed starting for for warm weather crops. It’s about 8 weeks before our last frost.

      I've heard quite a few folks talk about planting stuff on St. Patrick's Day. Sounds like that's a popular day for planting up your way.

    Love Peas. This year I'm mixing up seven varieties and saving pea seeds for next year. Let the best peas survive! I plant mine the same way you are doing, but I do put my trellis in first. I'm in zone 7 so I just watch when you plant and what you plant and know that is what I will need to do next. Right now I figure I'm about 5 to 6 weeks behind you, but as the season moves forward, the time frame closes up. Keep growing.

    One of the last pictures I took of my dad was of him in his overalls, working in the garden, while he was fighting cancer. Sometimes when I get frustrated about my garden I think about him sick as can be in his garden. It gives me a boost. Dad saw it worth doing even while he was sick. So I will too.

    WANDO PEAS hold up better in heat than any other varietiey of English peas. Wonderful that your children are getting going with gardening early. My daughter is just getting a garden going at almost 40 and our son moved fall a year ago so that he can have a bit more garden than just in pots. Gardening is good for the soul and for character development.

    What a wonderful story. Just shows what an awesome father you are. Travis, I'm on the border of 8b/9a and I had trouble with English peas until I started over seeding to hedge my bet. I basically plant as usual, maybe a little more generous spacing. Then a month later I come in and seed in between those plants. Then I do it again and keep repeating. I've been doing this for a couple of years with Sugar Snap Peas, from September/October until February/March, and it seems like there are almost always fresh peas in the garden. It might seem like a waste of seeds, but I started buying in bulk and have definitely gotten my money's worth.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like an excellent succession planting technique. And like you said, if you're buying in bulk you're saving on seeds anyways.

    Have my peas started indoor and will be going out soon. Yes, they can be transplanted if you have deep enough pots - ffoam drinking cups are a great size as they have enough soil so you don't bind the roots. I also plant seeds when the transplants go out for succession planting. Growing Sugar Daddy, Sugar Anne, Oregon Sugar Pod, and Lincoln. Love peas, one of my favorite seasons in the garden is pea season!

    No need to respond, but just wanted to say another reason I really appreciate you is that you talk about varieties you've already grown. That is so helpful. It gets really old watching "seed hauls" every year where people basically show the seed packages they've just bought--and they have nothing to say really about the seeds other than why they picked them because they haven't tried them yet! That's not really helpful for us. But the way you report on your seeds is. Thank you.

    I'm surprised you didn't use the seeder for the peas. It would make quick work of putting them in the furrow. Fall is your best time for peas and spring is mine. I have Oregon giant and super sugar snap peas for the spring but they won't be planted until mid April. Haven't tried either 1 before so we'll see how it goes.

    • @LazyDogFarm

    Used a single stem string system for the past two years and will again this year. Worked impressively in 2020. So many tomatoes. Big many stems like grapes. The popular hybrids but so good. Also had less disease and easier to control insects. Last year they were a victim of east TX weather . Will be planting hybrids and heirlooms this year.

      On camera that patch of pine trees may look large, but it's really not. With the exception of that little patch of pine trees, we're surrounded by hundreds of acres of commercial farmland. So the deer would have to walk a long ways through open spaces to get to our garden.

    Travis, this year we planted cover crops to control root-knot nematodes as you suggested. We garden in 4 X 8 raised beds, so can't mow or plow so now we are having trouble incorporating it into to soil and prepping the bed. Any suggestions? The cover crop is about a foot tall. We tried hand pulling it and just laying it on the soil, using a small tiller, turning it with a garden fork, and just laying it over and covering it with a tarp. Nothing has worked well so far. We are senior gardeners who deal with a lot of joint pain so the physical effort required is a concern.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have a weedeater or hedge shears? I would just chop and drop the vegetation right at the soil level. I'd just use a garden fork to basically flip the soil once the cover crop was cut. But I understand if your joint pain won't allow you to do that. Putting a tarp over it will extinguish it, but it takes longer.

    • @LazyDogFarm

      I don't know anything about using rice hulls, but maybe someone on here does. A cover crop of tillage radish works great for heavy soils, but you need to plant it in the fall.

    Plots are looking good. I used that hanging string technique one year for my tomatoes and it worked really well. Have you decided what you are going to use for the support system? I used “T” posts and sisal twine for my set up. I like sisal because it is sturdy and will biodegrade at the end of the season.

      I haven't decided on the support system yet, but will likely go with t-posts.

    Zone 8B (SC low country) - planted those Johnny’s peas 2 weeks ago when it was 70 plus. Then the big freeze came along but they have germinated in the last few days! I plant in 2’ high raised beds. I don’t understand the inoculation step…can you explain?

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Legumes (peas, beans, peanuts) are nitrogen-fixers. That means they're able to create their own nitrogen supply via their roots. But for that to happen, a certain type of bacteria has to be present in the soil. The inoculant provides that bacteria.

    Travis, I’m thinking if I grow English peas and leave them to dry, I could store them up for split pea soup. Does that sound right? I love good thick split pea soup.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never let them dry. Things don't dry on the plant very well down here because of the humidity, so we always eat them fresh.

    • @mousiebrown1747
      @mousiebrown1747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also called Lucky Beans in New Orleans, where they are often grown to donate to the Catholic Church to be blessed and given out for “blessings/luck” on St Joseph’s day. After prayers to St Joseph, Sicilians we’re saved from starvation by fava beans which grew when nothing else would grow. True history, celebrated in New Orleans and Sicily.
