Great information. And let me tell you how happy I am to have found you after all these months. I had been watching on the Hoss Tools channel for quite awhile, and one day you just weren't there anymore. I searched for explanations but never found anything. Yesterday, TH-cam finally figured out I might like one of your videos...man, they're slow. ;-)

I love this kind of information! I’m very much a “why” person. Tell me why something is the way it is. Lately, all I can find on gardening channels is ‘how to’s’ all for newbies in the garden. I know that’s a booming market currently, but I feel like it’s over saturated, and there’s not much other gardening information being addressed. I’ve always enjoyed your research knowledge that you shared on the Hoss channel, and I’m glad you’re carrying on that tradition. It makes a difference to me, and helps me to make informed decisions. Sometimes it’s just cool tid-bits and facts that I never knew. In regards to the quality of seeds that I’ve purchased from Hoss Tools, I found them to be top notch. After watching this video, I now know that you were the “why” behind that. Your research and care of the products sold shows in the end result. Thank you, Travis. You’re much appreciated!
All I can say is, I’ve bought seeds from all over and I’ve never had 97-100% germination consistently until I found Hoss. You provided us with quality seeds and I enjoyed your breakdown of varieties that y’all sold. I also enjoy this new format and channel. Sometimes, change is good.

I believe you and your Dad made a great team together but sometimes things don't work out. In honesty I miss you on Row by Row and Hoss tools in general. Thank you for all your help in the last few years and in the future.
Thanks! Your right, there’s a wide variety of reasons folks buy seeds from where they do. Perhaps they mostly do originate from a small group of distributors. My thing has always been buy local. Alaska although geographically large is still just a small community at heart. We’re lucky to have an outlet (Alaska mill and feed) that carries a wide selection of seeds…hybrid, heirloom, you name it, just rack after rack of types and brands, plus anything a small home farm might need for chickens, goats etc. Didn't know until this video the seeds came from just a few sources…but it still feels good to buy from a local place.
Based on your recommendations a couple years ago while working for Hoss my garden has transformed. Went from buying Bonnie plants at local box stores and Fair at best seeds from my local southern states to these superior product purchased at Hoss. From fertilizer injector/ drip irrigation , cover cropping to seed starting with excellent seed varieties and product my gardening has transformed. Everybody that has seen it or has tasted it has been bewildered and amazed. I’ve just commented “ 35 years of gardening a man should learn how to grow”. Little did they know I’ve step my game up based on your videos and the row by row show. Thanks Travis! As long as you garden and share I’m going to be watching and learning! Besides fishing, gardening is my favorite passion!
Good Video! Yes you bring to light several things to consider, because I do somewhat buy by price & availability. I Heard thru a live that you no longer worked for Hoss Tools, I hope you have made a step up in careers. I liked your content you posted on Hoss's Page, That's the reason i followed you here. Thank you for sharing your Knowledge with us!
I’ve been busy with life and haven’t kept up with gardening TH-cam community so watching this has answered my questions to some stuff. But that’s not here nor there. This video has that Travis touch! Glad you’re doing well and can explore more options to gardening products that you weren’t with your former company. Always growing and learning! Alright alright alright!!! Still remember that catch phrase!!! Also really shows how much you learned about the seed selling game and see how you say you are done with selling seeds.
Again...great information. Since I only found you not very long ago, I'm still catching up on your videos. This is one of the most informational videos online about seeds. For awhile I bought only heirloom seeds... but are now getting back to trying some hybrids. Praying for your fast recovery, whatever that becomes.
Man something is missing here....Its HOSS tools. When I watch HOSS something is missing over there too. And its YOU!!!!!!! Greg hadn't even attempted a big word since YOU left lol Man I miss the OLD days take care and GOD bless brother GOD has a plan!
Yup we have to evolve whether it’s our job or with family. I appreciate everyone keeping things civil in at least the public eye. I will still support small and local businesses. Cheers from the Cincinnati Pickle guy
Great video, Travis, very informative. I just want to say that I purchased the majority of my seeds for my fall and summer garden from Hoss Tool and another well known online supplier and Hoss seed packets all contained more seeds. From carrots to peppers and more, Hoss is generous and I will continue to support what you helped build. Love my Hoss tools, too.
Sorry you've felt bad. Thank you Travis for the education about seeds. Very informative. I followed you here from Hoss as well. Enjoy your videos. God bless.
Travis, that was fascinating. Thank you! It was terrific getting a sneak peak into the inner workings of seed companies. I love getting my hands on rare and unusual seeds - coaxing the good ones along until there are enough seeds to share. My hope is that seed preservation will be my “legacy”. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 6/2/2021.
Enjoying the new content Travis....I buy from people I can relate to and provide a quality product. Our 3 large gardens are currently 99 percent seed supplied from Hoss....cause of you. Thursday nights at 8 was my wife and I's date night lol. I'm ready to see chicken tractors being moved up and down the grass pathways in that dream garden! Keep up the good work!
I definitely want to add a chicken tractor at some point. Not sure I'll use it on the grass walkways, but we'll certainly be using it on the actual plots where we have cover crops planted.
Travis, I have been following you for over a year. Thanks for giving us a little background on your transition to the present. What is a big influence for me in buying any seed, is show and tell. Show how the particular seed variety preforms, in growth, production and taste. I never buy cheap seed of anything, because my time in growing and planting is too short to take chances. By the way, I have my Avalon corn planted (another planting in two weeks), and the rain today will take care of watering. Oh, I also enjoy your "Pop Up Life " channel. While not a camper myself, it is both interesting and enjoyable to watch. Your children seem to really let their Imagination go, and are a joy . Take care and all the best from Southern N.H.
Glad you are doing good. I bought seeds from all over and was very disappointed with them at times until I found Hoss Seeds. You can say that you did your research on how to make sure the seeds y’all sold were good. God Bless you and your new adventure . Thanks for sharing. 🌻❤️
Thank you for lifting the veil of seed sourcing and product origination...these are the " secrets" of the industry that are rarely shared. Even though I am second gen. farmer this helped to educate me and as we know " knowledge is power"...keep those types of vids coming as they are really necessary to help us " clod busters" survive.
Great segment! Very informative- I love the fact that Hoss puts germination rates on the packages. I am growing many of the varieties that you had done taste tests on and look forward to more of those in the future 😁
@@LazyDogFarm I`ve always grown the Clemson spineless here on the North and South Carolina line but I took your advise and got the Jambalaya and it`s growing but not quite ready to produce, and I sell a lot!
Thanks for helping me become a better gardener! It’s really been both fun, informative and fruitful so to say. I’ve had great success with all the varieties of seeds I’ve purchased from you when you were with Hoss. Maybe one day if Lazy Dog Farm seeds became available I could purchase some of those to try. Yes, I definitely would purchase seeds from you.
Well done Travis. I am appreciative of your knowledge. You are the main reason why my garden is thriving so far and I feel it is going to be a great summer market season.
This is a great video. Thank you for providing all that information. You presented it very well being very diplomatic at the same time. You had the opportunity to obtain information that most of us can't, so thank you for sharing. I never really thought about the where's and how's about the seeds I buy, and now it makes me think.
Great information about seeds. Your knowledge of the business and how things work made for a much more informative discussion of the topic. Thanks Travis. BTW We got our rain up here and then some. Hope y'all got some rain as well.
We have yet to receive any. Some parts of the county got half an inch yesterday, but nothing for us yet. Looked like it was going to rain all day yesterday, but nothing. Maybe tomorrow ...
I was the manager of the "in house" seed lab for a major cotton seed company. Like you said, the company continued to sell previous years seeds as long as they continued to meet national germination levels. Then, when the seed dropped below 80% germ, they'd blend it with excellent fresh seed which actually might have 98% germ. The customer probably never actually received any of that really high germ seed because it was used to keep the older seed up to national standards.
Wow 🤩! Very interesting and informative Travis. I watch a lot of gardening and farming channels and I’ve never seen anything even remotely similar to this continent. Very very much appreciated, thank you. I’m sure you’re kind of tired of hearing about it but I just want to say you helped me so much while at Hoss. I watched Row by Row Garden Show (loved your props) and listen listened to the podcast while I was outside working. You answered all my questions and were very patient and helpful and I appreciate you so much. It’s none of my business but I just wish the best for you and your dad, that’s all I want to say about that. So glad to see the Content thatI I appreciate you so much for on this channel as well. 😁. God bless!
Always good information! You know me well enough to know how important it is to buy seeds that will perform well. I can't afford to gamble a great deal on quality.
I buy flower seeds from a company that has country of origin on the packets. Much as how you have mentioned here that seeds are coming from all over the world, I like to have this information. I had not realized that seed shortages were because of international shipping snafus. Excellent and informative video. Thanks.
Now that you've given us all this great background info, I hope you'll share with us where you've gotten your seeds as you show us your different crops over the season, and why you chose them for that particular crop, what you were looking for, etc.
AMAZING! this was the most informative video I've seen on seeds. I've ordered many Hoss seeds and have been very happy with the result...now I know why. But, I am disturbed with your reference to "formerly with Hoss Company". I hope you and your dad didn't have a falling out. Both of you have some good info for us.
Hated to see you leave. The whole was more than the sum of the parts. That said, I hope you do well in your new venture. I enjoy your content and have learned a lot, both here and your Row by Row content. I’ll also continue to support Hoss Tools for their excellent product quality and customer support. Kudos to you all.
Another great video Travis. I think you are cutting yourself short by not getting into the seed selling game brother. You have a knack for explaining and instructing how to grow vegetables. You have so much experience already in selling products. I really believe if you just started small like with a dozen different kinds of seeds your business would boom fast. The fact that you “grow and show” your vegetables would enable you to be very successful. Have a great day and hope you feel better buddy. Rob
Great informative videos like this one is the reason I enjoy your advice on all things gardening. Hey sometimes things don't work out, but we still have both TH-cam channels to watch and enjoy. Alright-Alright-Alright!!! ✌
Thank you for this very informational video on seeds. I had no idea. I thought they were grown in several regions of the USA so the germination would be great to grow for your area. So when I found the company you use to work for I was excited to find seeds for my region...yep I feel dumb. Will be paying close attention to the names and distributors that seem to work in our area. Thanks again....very educational.
Thank you Travis for being so inciteful yet professional. I do enjoy watching your videos/Vlogs and look forward to each notification. I live in Zone 7a (Maryville, TN) and things are just now starting to "cook". Corn is about 12" tall, Cucumbers & Scarlett Emperor beans are tall enough to train on the Monofilament netting and the Tomatoes aren't quite tall yet to weave... Thank you for all your knowledge and inspiration. I have always planted the same stuff every year but you've inspired me to venture out from the box store varieties and propagate from different resources and start from seeds. Thank you!!!
It's always fun to try new stuff. Lots of viewers always ask my why I'm trying new varieties if the prior ones worked so well. I just like continually trying new stuff. I grow a different variety of corn every year.
Thanks for the information, you did a good job of educating us! My concern with international suppliers of seeds is, how do we regulate organic vs nonorganic seeds for example? Many countries have very lax regulations. Does the USDA oversee all of these?
I have spoken with several of the seed suppliers about "organic" seeds and they confirmed what I originally believed -- that there is no genetic difference between an organically-grown seed and a conventionally-grown seed. It's just a way for them to charge more for the same seed. Think about it this way ... If you lay in the sun a good portion of your younger years, does that mean that your children will have similarly dark skin? Of course not. Although the chemicals used in conventional seed production may be less-than-desirable, they're not impacting the genetic makeup of the seed. Now I'm not sure how the international regulations work for organic seed production, but several of the producers themselves admitted that it's quite the ruse.
💥👏👏Wonderful content. I used to would not put much thought into that packet of seeds I held in my hands when I headed to the checkout. My husband would joke that I had a "Gangrene" thumb and couldn't grow anything or keep anything alive long enough. (I fooled him. 27 years of marriage I kept him alive and again he jokes "barely"). 🤣 My point is without him saying you need to learn how to grow potatoes that led me to many TH-cam channels beginning with Hoss Tools and as I have watched and learned I have discovered that I appreciate the companies that I buy my seeds from more now. It also makes a difference that I can hear and see someone discuss the seeds rather than just picking a packet from the store or online just from a picture. Watching the homestead channels sometimes (more often than not) determine where I buy my seeds from. So when I throw that seed mix over that seed or harvest that fruit from something I've grown, I will give more thought And thank you(to God for those of you who have learned and teach us) about the quality of what you do to help us do what we need to do. I know this was a long comment but I just have literally learned so much I am still astounded with all I've learned and still have yet to learn that I can give to my children and possibly future grandchildren.
I have had real good luck with seeds from hoss the way I feel this evening to good of germination lol lol enjoy the videos I learn new things I’m fixin to do the weave on my determante tomatoes I’m old never seen it done before until I seen you doing it
Such a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for sharing this. Really interesting look into an interesting subject! I have planted things differently since I watched a video of you explaining the types of sweet corn. I learned a lot!
I'm a sucker for heirlooms, so I tend to buy from smaller companies or from private sellers (like on Ebay). The weirder, the better. I also save a lot of my own seeds. I'm currently studying horticulture science at university so I can become a plant breeder and run my own nursery.
Speaking of seeds, one old Italian lady we lived next to in San Jose, CA got tomatoes from her friend and shared some with us. They were big, red, and delicious. Turns out this tomato was developed over the years for local conditions by saving the best seeds from the best plant with no others to cross pollinate for decades. The tomatoes adapted to local conditions with best results as she kept the best of the best year after year! She developed her own heirloom tomato seeds!
Good for her! I bet those were tasty! From my genetics classes way back in the day, it takes about six generations to really develop that local acclimation. So it's not easy, but it can be done.
Hi Travis, you I believe know how much Momma J loves research and real facts...plus exploring options. I must say you hit the nail on the head with this content. You can always talk with and to Momma js country gardening. Stay connected and watch and make comments and share MJSCG. Looking forward to seeing u on my channel. God bless u. Thank you for sharing
I’m so happy you made this video! We’re going to watch this at our next farm meeting. I’d love to have your input into the various types of runner beans.
I've had good luck with gurney's... I tried to get you to grow a corn called gotta have it back in 2018.... you should give it a try before it gets too late
I need to do some more research on that variety. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe that is one of those numbered hybrids that they simply renamed -- much like the Park's Whopper series. In all my years of seed buying, I never saw any supplier carrying that variety. That suggests it was renamed. I need to find out what the breeder calls it.
Great information! I have often wondered about seeds and the differences between the retailers and the quality differences. Thanks and glad you're feeling better

I believe you and your Dad made a great team together but sometimes things don't work out. In honesty I miss you on Row by Row and Hoss tools in general. Thank you for all your help in the last few years and in the future.
Thanks Larry! Glad to see you here on the new channel.
Great to hear your garden is thriving. Hope the fishing is good for you this year as well!
Thanks for joining us on the new channel!
Best seed video I’ve ever seen! Very thorough and informative. Thank you 😊
Thanks Amy!
Glad you found us Xavier! Welcome to the new channel.
Again...great information. Since I only found you not very long ago, I'm still catching up on your videos. This is one of the most informational videos online about seeds. For awhile I bought only heirloom seeds... but are now getting back to trying some hybrids. Praying for your fast recovery, whatever that becomes.
Thanks Allen. We plant a combination of both. Some heirlooms, some hybrids for production or improved disease-resistance.
I sure will miss your video intro from the other channel...but glad I found you here.
Thanks for joining us over here Fred!
Man something is missing here....Its HOSS tools. When I watch HOSS something is missing over there too. And its YOU!!!!!!! Greg hadn't even attempted a big word since YOU left lol Man I miss the OLD days take care and GOD bless brother GOD has a plan!
Thanks for joining us on the new channel Thomas. We've certainly been blessed with the fast growth thus far.
I am impressed with Hoss seeds. just above the rest. I do miss you at Hoss and all the good info you gave about seeds replanting and while growing.
Thanks for joining us over here. We'll definitely continue sharing our successes and failures with particular varieties.
Yup we have to evolve whether it’s our job or with family.
I appreciate everyone keeping things civil in at least the public eye.
I will still support small and local businesses.
Cheers from the Cincinnati Pickle guy
Thanks Tim!
Loved this video as well as all the others! Keep ‘em coming buddy! Love seeing your follower numbers climbing and that beautiful family beside you!
Thanks Sarah! We've indeed been blessed with the growth of the new channel.
Good to hear of your pleasant experience with them.
Sorry you've felt bad.
Thank you Travis for the education about seeds. Very informative.
I followed you here from Hoss as well. Enjoy your videos. God bless.
Thanks for joining us over here Rebecca!
I think you are doing a fantastic job in creating that legacy. Keep doing what you're doing.
Interesting. Thanks.
Thank you for this information and making space on your channel for it.
Our pleasure Angie!
Really great video for me and very educational, so appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share.
Love this channel!
Great to hear!
Glad you enjoy the camping channel. The kids have really enjoyed exploring all the different campgrounds.
very informative as always, Professor
.
Haha. Thanks Larry!
Glad you are doing good. I bought seeds from all over and was very disappointed with them at times until I found Hoss Seeds. You can say that you did your research on how to make sure the seeds y’all sold were good. God Bless you and your new adventure . Thanks for sharing. 🌻❤️
Thanks for watching Kimberlie!
Glad you enjoyed it Andrea!
Great segment! Very informative- I love the fact that Hoss puts germination rates on the packages. I am growing many of the varieties that you had done taste tests on and look forward to more of those in the future 😁
Thanks for watching Jessica!
Germination % is often legally required. It is in Washington state.
Thanks for the information as always love your video’s that’s why I followed you to lazy dog farm
Thanks for joining us over here!
THANK YOU LAZY DOG FARM YOU LET ME KNOW SOMETHING I DID NOT KNOW GOOD WORK
Thanks for watching Lonnie!
I been wondering where you have been, glad I found you and my Jambalaya is doing good!
Glad you found us Rick!
@@LazyDogFarm I`ve always grown the Clemson spineless here on the North and South Carolina line but I took your advise and got the Jambalaya and it`s growing but not quite ready to produce, and I sell a lot!
@@rickgordon4081 my Jambalaya already has pods in NWGA and they are not even a foot tall yet. How do you price and sell your okra?
@@vedaandchristyruiz9872 I always go to the Farmers Market here and see what they are selling for and go from there!
@@rickgordon4081 Great idea! Family vacation next week and then working the markets hard and delivery in our community.
No plans to sell seeds. But we'll continue to grow a wide variety of crops and always try new varieties so you can see how they grow.
Well done Travis. I am appreciative of your knowledge. You are the main reason why my garden is thriving so far and I feel it is going to be a great summer market season.
Thanks guys! Those okra seeds germinated very well btw!
@@LazyDogFarm Glad you got them. Check out our garden fb page, Between the Rows. I hope all is well for you and your family.
This is a great video. Thank you for providing all that information. You presented it very well being very diplomatic at the same time. You had the opportunity to obtain information that most of us can't, so thank you for sharing. I never really thought about the where's and how's about the seeds I buy, and now it makes me think.
Glad you enjoyed it Kat!
That lone tater keeps grabbing my attention 😂😂😂 fantastic video as always-thank you for the info!
Haha. That was leftover from the previous sweet potato planting video. I should put that back in the cupboard.
Yep. Lots of tricks to keep things up to regulation standards.
😁. God bless!
Thanks Mary! Great to see you here!
Always good information! You know me well enough to know how important it is to buy seeds that will perform well. I can't afford to gamble a great deal on quality.
I agree. I hate replanting.
I buy flower seeds from a company that has country of origin on the packets. Much as how you
have mentioned here that seeds are coming from all over the world, I like to have this information.
I had not realized that seed shortages were because of international shipping snafus. Excellent
and informative video. Thanks.
Cover crops usually have country of origin as well. For some reason most vegetables don't.
Now that you've given us all this great background info, I hope you'll share with us where you've gotten your seeds as you show us your different crops over the season, and why you chose them for that particular crop, what you were looking for, etc.
Sure! We'll be glad to share where we're getting our seeds when we plant a particular variety.
Very good information Travis👍
Thanks 👍
AMAZING! this was the most informative video I've seen on seeds. I've ordered many Hoss seeds and have been very happy with the result...now I know why. But, I am disturbed with your reference to "formerly with Hoss Company". I hope you and your dad didn't have a falling out. Both of you have some good info for us.
I resigned in early April.
Rob
No doubt I could do it, but don't think it's something I want to do. I'm enjoying having more with my wife and kids nowadays.
@@LazyDogFarm Your kids are only young once. Enjoy.
Great informative videos like this one is the reason I enjoy your advice on all things gardening. Hey sometimes things don't work out, but we still have both TH-cam channels to watch and enjoy. Alright-Alright-Alright!!! ✌
Thanks 👍
This is a great topic. 🤔 Much to consider on my next seed purchase. Thank you.
Glad we could get the wheels turning.
Yep. Just because a retail seed company is in a particular location, that doesn't mean the seeds were grown there.
Great explanation of the seed origination.
Thanks for watching!
I use to watch your videos ONLY!! Lol good to see more of you
Glad you enjoy them!
The "Travis KEY Seed Company". The Key to a successful vegetable garden.
Haha. I’m done selling seeds. We’ll just enjoy growing them now.
Great video Sir. Awesome info. I hope you feel better.
Slowly getting there. Much to do in the garden.
Thanks Cynthia. Glad to help improve your gardening journey.
Wow. This is a great teaching session. I really appreciate you sharing this information with us. Thanks so much.
You are very welcome Mavis!
I have had real good luck with seeds from hoss the way I feel this evening to good of germination lol lol enjoy the videos I learn new things I’m fixin to do the weave on my determante tomatoes I’m old never seen it done before until I seen you doing it
Have fun trying the weave. It works well when done properly.
Very good information 👌
Preciate it!
I really enjoyed this video. It was very helpful and informative. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Geri!
Such a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for sharing this. Really interesting look into an interesting subject! I have planted things differently since I watched a video of you explaining the types of sweet corn. I learned a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh wow. I learned so much. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I'm a sucker for heirlooms, so I tend to buy from smaller companies or from private sellers (like on Ebay). The weirder, the better. I also save a lot of my own seeds. I'm currently studying horticulture science at university so I can become a plant breeder and run my own nursery.
Great goals to have!
Helpful video thanks
Awesome content Travis! Very informative! Wishing you and your family the very best on your new chapter in the book of life. 😊
We're very excited for this new chapter. Challenges are fun!
Well done! This was a really informative and interesting video. Thanks for all the 'insider' info.
My pleasure Heather!
Very enlightening.
Thanks Tony!
Great vid Travis The seeds I bought from hoss tools had really great germination , and the plants look great.
👍
My yellow watermelon had about a 50% germination kinda disappointed in hoss first time buyer long time viewer
This was very good information! Thanks!

Hi Travis, you I believe know how much Momma J loves research and real facts...plus exploring options. I must say you hit the nail on the head with this content. In my past videos I provided information about you former company and others. I supported many different companies based upon quality of seeds, customer service, dedication to shipping, honesty, availability, options, cost (never #1) cheap is not normally best nor is the highest... now I got to say...your video increased my love and respect for u. You can always talk with and to Momma js country gardening. Stay connected and watch and make comments and share MJSCG. Looking forward to seeing u on my channel. God bless u. Thank you for sharing
Thanks Momma J!
I’m so happy you made this video! We’re going to watch this at our next farm meeting. I’d love to have your input into the various types of runner beans.
I'm no expert on runner beans, but have grown a few different ones over the years.
Very informative Travis. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
Great info great channel keep up the great work
Thanks William!
Remember it was trademarked by gurney
Sh2 super sweet
Enlightening! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great information! Thank you Travis!
Thanks Shannon!
Good info, thanks!! Feel better soon.
Thank you!
Great information! I have often wondered about seeds and the differences between the retailers and the quality differences. Thanks and glad you're feeling better
Getting there. Hope to be back working in the garden soon.
Thank you for the vid & you always have the coolest t-shirts!
Thanks Jen!
