    Just outstanding demo of great techniques - I can see the rain gutter method being equally effective for radishes, bok choy, spinach, pole beans, etc, and the framing structure for cucumber, tomato, zucchini, etc. Thanks so much for sharing!! Stay safe & healthy, eat your veggies to stay resilient & strong.

      the big issue i have with the gutter method is that it takes much space. I've got a tray with 300 pods of an inch by an inch, which i can easily place indoors or in a little greenhouse i've built solely for quickly making sprouts from seeds. The extra warmth speeds things up by alot and after a week or 2, the pods can be pulled out without damaging the roots (much), you'll need far less compost to get things started this way too.

      I don't use the gutter method for peas, I use it for Bush beans, in fact that's the best plant to use this method on. No spacing required just dump the beans randomly it down matter of there not spaced they grow fine.

    • @WATCHINGTHEWATCHERS
      @WATCHINGTHEWATCHERS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AwoudeX Not really you just cut to size, also you don't need to use a full Polly tunnel or green house. Just put it outside covered in a mini Polly tunnel or clear plastic. Simple.

    I saw this method last year on a gardening website and really want to try it this year. I have the worst rodent problem so I cannot direct seed anything. One year I planted hundreds of seeds in a 30 foot bed and got a grand total of 5 plants that survived. Last year I planted out seeds I started inside and grew to several inches tall and finally had my first successful pea crop but it was so much work planting each individual plant. This will be so much more efficient!

So the next year, I planted a 10m by 8m field and invited them over again. Well, the field was gone in half a day again. Now it´s almost a tradition.

    Hey Huw! The method you describe in this video is genius. I have added my own stroke of genius in the form of drip watering my snow peas. I could not find any old guttering so I purchased 1.5m of black drainage pipe that has a removable open grid top for less than $20 AUD. It has two open ends, and I put it under a dripping tap planted out just as you suggested on a gentle slope on a concrete path. It fits out of sight behind a cast iron and wooden garden bench seat. This method was 100% successful, as gravity guided the water through the compost that I used as the growing medium in the black draining pipe. In some ways it acted as a swale with the overflow, eventually finding it's way to watering a 40 year old everbearing lime tree a few meters away even though I put two bricks at each end to protect my little seedlings from being eaten. The best part is I can use it over and over again! Cheers!

    Interesting to see how differently we do the same thing.
    In my Mediterranean type climate with minimal frost I plant in late October to November.Harvest
    February and March.
    Too warm most of the year for healthy plants. My soil is clay and wants to compact so I would never step or sit in planter boxes. When I stand off of a walkway where roots are i like to stand on boards to avoid compaction. Your soil looks much better. I planted 30 pole snap peas on a 12 foot nearly 4 meter ( horizontal distance) trellis. Usually I plant fewer but they still made a mass of foliage that used all the sun.
    Alderman may take less space than mine. Then there is the trellis. Looks very good for pole beans but the sticks seem too big for attachment of attachment of tendrils. So I use horizontal strings every 6 inches --roughly 15 cm
    None of this may matter as your soil looks so good.

    Thank you for this information. Great clever use of the gutter. I've started with sweet pea flower plants in individual small pots this year, which produced peas then transplanting into tubs. Don't know how successful they will be, but had a few plants given me last year by my daughter. They gave some fruit but not a lot, but were pretty. I collected those peas once dried off and are coming along nicely in their pots for now. Had some bad winds last year too, which didn't help..

    Thanks to all the UK garden content makers, I’ve been using the word ‘bit’ more frequently. But I still prefer ‘awesome’ of ‘brilliant’… lol… greetings from the USA.

    A lot of people on our allotment site use plastic electric cable ties to join the canes. We also attach diagonal canes going up corner to corner to make the structure more rigid. We have to net the plants until they are quite big because of pigeons.
