    This is the best explanation of FS ever. I want to understand what frequencies certain blemishes, lines, or dark circles are prominent in and therefore what pixel radius ranges I should use for retouching those areas. Since you have a real understanding of how Photoshop works, I would also appreciate you providing your technical description of various tools in Photoshop. For example, the healing brushes must blend together certain frequencies from their selections, how is this done and how does it compare with your multi-frequency technique?

    • @SidVPhoto
      @SidVPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every blemish on a single image can have slightly different radius. And it also varies from full length to closeups, and also the megapixels/image dimensions of the image. The way we have it set on the ProWorkflow panel is by using three press formulas for Full length, mid shot and close up, of which the radius can be fine-tuned using opacity. Then the final result is painted in using your brush flow/opacity. Since there are lot of variables, it is not possible to have a fixed radius for anything. Even the healing brush is not perfect when you work with sharply focussed textures. Thats why many high end retouchers prefer the clone stamp tool. I will explain the old and new healing brush algorithms vs clone stamp in the next video.

  • @lancelenoir2875

    Outstanding Sid! Adding those mids that can be controlled with opacity is genius. It's basically the same thing we have done for over two decades using a Highpass inverted layer at a specific radius to have a better transition between Shadows and Highlights. Only this can be done first and take care of 90% of that at one hit.

    Wow it's so well explained ! One thing I didn't get is how you adapt the 5 version on a 16 bit file ? You just do the substract ?

    • @SidVPhoto
      @SidVPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, for the 16 bit file we Add with invert checked even for the upper high layer. Keep in mind that the Fs3 and 5 the split in 16bits is not as accurate as in a standard 16bit split which has a perfect mid point.

    • @gixster92

    Hi Sid, thank you very much for your videos, learning a lot from you.
    I would like to humbly suggest, generally for your videos, if you could slow down a bit when explaining as sometimes you perform some actions without highlighting the steps which makes it bit difficult to follow and fully understand the concept of your intention.

    • @SidVPhoto
      @SidVPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. Thank you for the amazing tutorial. At 16:03 you explain about the number of tonal values (255/2=127.5) and because it doesn’t exist as bit number photoshop calculate it as 128. I believe that from 0-255 we have 256 tonal values as 0 is considered as a tonal value. So 256/2=128. Please could you review and analyse with me so I can understand if I am wrong ?

    • @SidVPhoto
      @SidVPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you are correct about 256 total tonal values and half is 128.But from here you need to think different....we have total of 128 light grays ie from value 0(white) to 127, and the other half 128 dark grays starting from value 128 to 255(black). So what do you want to be the exact middle gray? The value 127 which is the end of light gray set, or the value 128 which is beginning of dark gray set?

    I downloaded the action but kept getting errors on the 5.0 8bit. I then identified that all the "merge visible" actions weren't set to make duplicates. I corrected those steps and it started working properly, even though I don't really get the "upper high" layer, with seems kinda pointless and doesn't seem to work on higher frequency at all. Still, the action already solved some problems for me. Thanks.

  • @Randyrocker1

  • @o.tsonev
    @o.tsonev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great stuff! I personally use multiple layers frequancy separation similar to what you show here. I found splitting the image in 4 layers most useful for me.
    I use gaussian blur for all the steps. I think you are incorrect in your assumption about halos or artifacting. I'm sure of that, as the combination of the lowest frequency and the frequency above, gives you the exact same image as if it is not split, so no amount of blurring the lower frequency will escape and be visible with the higher frequency.
    In fact there is no matter what you do to the bottom layer, as when calculating the apply image, PS will find out what it needs to do with every pixel in order to achieve the same image. So you can blur or sharpen or even artistically deform the bottom layer, after you apply the bottom layer to the top, and change the mode, you should not see any difference.
    So my method is just copy, blur, apply, copy, blur, apply,... repeat as needed and choose the blur as needed.
    Blur is the equivalent of low pass filter for audio or any linear signals, so applying something else, to get lower frequency is not clean separation, as in your low frequency layers are left sharper edges.
    Despite that it's a valid technique, and as I said it doesn't really matter what you do to the bottom layer, if it makes it easy to edit the image.
