DelPo: *breaks Nadal's serve with a net cord*
Nadal: so you have chosen death

I love it when Rafa plays some first strike tennis. He's a beast at defensive play, but when the serve is working and so is the forehand DTL, he's a totally different monster.

This was a great match by Rafa Nadal & probably his biggest test for the 2017 US Open given his h2h against Delpo on hardcourts. In the first set Rafa was too predictable attacking Del Potro's backhand with his lefty forehand & Delpo simply neutralized this tactic counterattacking with his backhand & forehand. In the second set Rafa moved Delpo all over the court with backhand slices, drop shots and flatter forehands and backhands up the line & crosscourt which made Delpo guess where Rafa was hitting the ball. Delpo was also tired from his epic escape against Dominic Thiem in the 4th round & his great victory over Roger Federer in the quarter final. Nadal had Delpo guessing from the second set where the ball was going & Delpo basically ran out of gas. Delpo couldn't use his best weapons consistently against Rafa which was his big serve & huge forehand from the second set on. Delpo's serve speed kept dropping which was a sign of his fatigue. Re the difference between 2009 & 2017 Rafa was injured in the 2009 semifinal with an abdominal strain & just couldn't perform at his best & his predictability was punished by Delpo. The key to beating Delpo was to deny him predictable patterns, keep him moving, & minimize easy shots on his forehand. It is extremely difficult to execute but Rafa put on a master class here against an admittedly tired Delpo.

this match is the best example between the big 3 and the rest on the tour.
If you compare the us open 2009 and the us open 2017 match between nadal and delpotro, del potro plays 2017 the same like 2009, BUT by nadal everything change , the sereve, forehand, backhand, movement, the fore and backhand movement. If you want succes in tennis you must develop every year. I mean players like tsonga, berdych, delpotro ect plays always the same tennis with the age 23 or 27 or 30....
agassi, sampras has also develop his tennis style like the big 3

Del Potro was too slow, no movement, in 2009 he used to run

Delpo was so hampered by wrist/knee injuries. His backhand was far better in 2009 than later on, even before his 2nd surgery in 2014 his backhand was a lot better than here. We never saw what Delpo could really be.

You're fooling yourself. 2009's Delpo would've crushed 2017's Nadal over and over again (only in hard courts of course)

Robbie Koenig (at 6-4, 0-0 del Potro): "Rafa's spin on his ball can't do anything to del Potro. It is within del Potro's strike range."
In the next 3 sets Rafa wins 18 games to 5 games including 9 games in a row right after Koenig said that HAHAHAH
