It’s such a shame Delpo’s body betrayed him. I think he would have been a consistent contender for major titles for at least ten years. He probably would have won at least four or five.
Delpo had an absolute joke of a backhand before his surgeries. This thing was a sledgehammer. The semi final against Nadal in '09 is prove of that. I'm convinced that without his surgeries he would have been among the big players, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic. Especially for Nadal I think he would have been a match-up nightmare with healthy wrists.
@@FearsomeVoid Correct. And i think the results for Rafa on hard courts against Del Potro would have been devastating Early Del Potro is like Djok but with extreme firepower on both sides Nadals slow bouncy ground strokes would rarely go unpunished
Rafa had an amazing 2018, 5 titles from the 7 tournaments he completed. His level was arguably higher than in 2017. On the other hand, got injured at AO, and had his knee flare up on him during the US Open, before tearing his abdomen in Paris-Bercy.

Delpo is a great talent and amazing player. Ita some what unfortunate that some players had to play in a era that had Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray. These 4 players kade it nearly impossinle for anyone to win a grandslam between 2004 to 2020....
True, difficult era for excellent players like Stan, Murray etc…. However, Delpo would have won many grand slams if he didn’t have the wrist injuries as he was a matchup nightmare for those guys. I think he would have won 7-8, but we will never know unfortunately.

Novak beat Del Potro then to life the cup but didn't Del Potro play well, reminded of 2009 semis where he beat 2 legends in same tournament.Sad injury didn't allow him to showcase more
Simple why Nadal retired. He wanted to give Del Potro some rest, so that Del Potro could beat Djokovic in the final. Nadal did the same in 2022 Wimbledon by giving a walkover to Kyrgios in the semifinal so that Kyrgios could be fresh enough to beat Djokovic in the final. Didn't work though. Djokovic ended up winning both.

It’s such a shame Delpo’s body betrayed him. I think he would have been a consistent contender for major titles for at least ten years. He probably would have won at least four or five.
we always thought that the backhand was Delpo's weakness and we never appreciated how consistent it was
His trainer said in 2008 that his backhand was better than his forehand.
Pre 2010, he was hitting at an angle that was superb..we never saw the best of him..
What do you mean ? His BH was an amazing and powerful shot until the wrist surgeries in 2010 and 2014.
