    Its a great backup knife for out in the woods. If you lose or break your fixed blade its comforting to know you have this in your pocket. Especially in a survival situation. Plus you can buy 2 for the price of one 4Max. Strider and ZT dont have anything even close. They're over priced medium duty knives marketed as hard use.

      Pretty blades with premium materials and prices are great for eye candy and collectability, but their frame locks don't compare to the tri-ad locks for actual hard use.
      How many "hard use" knife companies do you know of, that tests their blade's cutting, stabbing, and lock Performance against other companies like Cold Steel does? Few if any.
      I have a VERY pretty and expensive Chris Reeve titanium handled frame lock Sebenza with BG-42 steel - but, I know it can't handle hard use like these Cold Steel folders.
      You'll find out that certain expensive "hard use" folders are all show and no go, when you're out actually using them.
      A $100 or less Cold Steel Recon 1 or others in their sub $100 line up, will outperform these wannabes. The pricier Cold Steel folders offer the looks, materials, and robustness for near fixed blade reliability and Performance.

    I wasn't a fan of cold steel knives, but after purchasing a code 4 a few months ago, I'm now hooked. After watching videos of the 4Max I purchased one and some other models. Now this SR1 comes along. Got to have it!!!! Take care.

  • @miked6367

    Hinderer, Strider, Medford etc. are not even in the same ball park as the SR1, because of the simple truth that they are FRAME locks, fun to use but weak convenient locks. The Sr1 is probably even tougher than the 4max due to it's thicker tip and blade grind. Knives are only as strong as their weakest link, no frame lock can compare to a Tri-Ad lock - let alone one with the thickness and build of the SR1. Cheers

    • @oceanwaves83
      @oceanwaves83 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stop pin is much smaller than the 4max, which also has thicker liners.

    • @gravytrainoutdoors
      @gravytrainoutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Side by side there is no comparison between the SR1 and the 4-Max. As unbelievably strong as the SR1 is... the 4-Max is in a whole other league. I say this as someone who has these knives and uses them hard! Love them all and wouldn’t trade them for any Hinderer, Strider or Medford!

    • @miked6367
      @miked6367 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gravytrainoutdoors no comparison? Sorry mate but that's garbage. I own two 4max's and 2 SR1's since their birth. Yeah the 4max is bigger and slightly takes the crosn, but blade stock, liner thickness, lock rocker size etc. and overall strength is very close. The 4max just feels insane due to its size and weight. Both heavyweight kings.

    • @gravytrainoutdoors
      @gravytrainoutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miked6367 I wouldn’t trade either of these knives and no normal person would likely ever find the practical difference in strength the 4-Max has over the SR1 but what might be noticeable is the extra thickness behind the edge of the SR1 and the larger size of the 4-Max. The 4-Max had noticeably better edge geometry and cutting performance and the SR1 carries better in the pocket. Out of the two knives the 4-Max is my preferred knife. Love them both though

    • @LXT43
      @LXT43 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miked6367 I would say that 4max is about 20-30% stronger vertically. That stop pin is bigger. It will also be stronger side/side because of how much wider it is at the hinge. It would hold up better to prying type tasks.

    @jjacob25101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Excellent video in everything you said. I just got my CTS-XHP Cold Steel Recon1 Tanto half serrated I've wanted for a long time for my primary EDC. I'm glad I waited for this, instead of the AUS8 version. Like you said, the American Lawman is great, and I plan to get one, too. It's perfect like you said for 85% of people wanting one good tactical folder. I wanted that one, having a law enforcement, security background, but then the Recon1 came out and that was my choice. The 4-Max is awesome, but expensive and too bulky. I like the heavy duty build of the SR1 for things I don't want to use my Recon1 for, realizing it's made for strength, and not as good at tasks than other knives that are not as durable. It's perfect for what it is, and what I wanted for. I've always wanted the more hefty, solid things, than the light, thin, sleek ones.

    I reground mine and made it a completely different knife, it actually cuts. Mine started out .055 behind the factory edge and pretty dull, thinned it to .025 behind a 20 dps edge. Raised the height of the grind to just below the thumb studs. I carry it in an open top belt pouch, sometimes in a back pocket. It's a work in progress, but I really like it.

That being said, this knife will last forever. Cuts very well, an being that its s35vn, might only have to sharpen it twice if not once in a lifetime.. i use to carry that big folding buck 110 model. loved how thick that buck was.. this sr1 replaces that 110 by a long shot. is much much lighter then the buck 110.. super happy cold steel created sr1..

    I have the SR1 and love it. It has a great balance of weight, strength, utility, safety, ergonomics, and durability. If I were to recommend an EDC Cold Steel knife for normal daily use, it would be the Ultimate Hunter or the ultra light Broken Skull. I find it funny when people say this knife is impractical and then compare it to the 4Max and say its not as good as a 4Max. The 4 Max is almost twice as heavy and bulky as this knife. I love the 4 max too but find this a way better option, one that I will definitely carry and use.

    Got mine today, very sloppy machine work on the lock bar. I don't know why CS grinds the bar down where you push to release it. The grind line where they
    stupidly ground down the lock bar is grossly crooked, looks like a little kid did the work on it. The pocket clip is unusable out of the box, I wear Carharts
    nearly all the time and will have to bend the clip just to carry the knife. Usually I take the clips off to bend them in the vise, but I am afraid to take out the
    baby screws that CS is still using. There are threads on BF that guys tried to switch the clip to the other side and the too small, too cheap of screws that
    CS insists on using strip out. I've got about three dozen CS folders with about half being xl models so I might be a fan boy but I wish they would get some
    of these things straightened out. Hey Cold Steel use bigger screws!!! Thanks Kevin for your uniquely insightful reviews!

    I'd rather have a fix blade than this folder. A folder is by its very nature oriented to EDC. This thing is not. Who needs this in jeans or kakis? Yup. My point exactly. Thanks for the discussion opening Mr. Cleary!

      Yeah, for most of what this knife is intended for I would want a fixed blade but I'm sure there are some guys who want something insanely overbuilt I don't carry it a lot but don't find it too bad when I do

    I think this is a cool knife, but seriously though why would anyone NEED this?
    A folding knife is supposed to be easy to carry, that's why It was invented in the first place, If you need something strong and heavy for tactical/survival purpose then just carry a small fixed blade, like the ZT0180 or the Cold Steel SRK, or even a freaking Mora.
    Everyone seems to love this knife but no one would actually carry it, most people just put it in their house or car instead, you might as well use that money to buy a good fixed blade.

      Beast of the Far East I do. In my country, it's illegal to carry fixed blade. Having a strong folding knife is very useful.

      Beast of the Far East what if you lose your fixed its always good to have a strong folder to back your strong fixed blade.

    No knife need to be that thick behind the edge. 100% that is uncalled for
