    I always remember watching you as a kid! Whenever I see this come into my recommendations, I get all these feelings rushing back and when I watch it it makes me feel like I’m 5 years old again, dreaming about the model railway I was building with my grandad!

    I love model railways, the only problem is the price-tag, but I want to start collecting short-long dmus and emus because of how neat they look

    BTW, The class 170 actually started in scotland for relief services that reduced the time to 15 minutes. It can couple up to other U.K wide trains and started in Edinburgh where the first unit was built. It originally came in 3 car units, serving Edinburgh to Glasgow via Lothian and always had dot matrix display boards saying 170 turbostars previously designated as the class 170/2 or 170/4 units made in 1999 in the scotrail swoop livery as it's first livery from ADTranz Derbyshire, in the U.K.

    Nice. I only have a 1 train, The hornby canadian pacific in navy blue. My grandad collected hornby trains and I'd go up for my birthday and pick one at random. I don't play with my trains much anymore. I should run it again. It does run really nice.

    @tjf4375 I know! The 'scratchy' feeling rom the units is the pick-ups isn't it? For the lights in each end. Doesn't seem worth it when you look at how dim they are lol! Might need to replace them fim little bulbs I think.

    great dmu ! where the blue tack gone its done a runner and left the track all wobberly like jelly. Its a good thing that your locos and trains dont snore your hosue would be like a brass band XD lol.

  • @InterCity82
    @InterCity82  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Willowfs4472 the rating did take into account the lights. I just edited it with the lights appearing at the end.

  • @tjfSIM
    @tjfSIM 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @InterCity82 Ah yes I think you're right, that makes sense! Agreed whatever the pickup arrangement is, it's not working too well, the lights on mine are exceptionally dim too! They're very nicely detailed and painted though, so I guess that makes up for it :) I wish Bachmann would do the Electrostar family as well, as they're very similar to the turbostars, but we'll be waiting a while I think!

    Now you have been introduced to the awesomeness that is Bachmann. I love Bachmann. I have Bachmann's Acela train, which is amazingly detailed (working pantographs and opening doors) and a Bachmann Spectrum 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain in Chessapeake and Ohio colours.

  • @coolibahrail
    @coolibahrail 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TrailBlazer65 Don't get me wrong there are a very efficient coupling, they don't slip off so you dont loose part of your train. For the DMUs they would be very good as there is no need to uncouple them.

  • @InterCity82
    @InterCity82  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @APOTwixx the score did take the lights into account. There was no way it could get higher than 8 in my opinion as its lights are seriously dim plus filling an entire unit with a motor is a bit silly.

  • @kovacsviktorpeter
    @kovacsviktorpeter 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review! I would like to add that both the drive and the couplers are classic 80ies PIKO technology. You can still see them in starter packages. If you want to get higher brightness from the lights without dcc, you could use a controller with a directional constant lighting circuit, so the lights could stay on full brightness even while the train is standing. Btw dccing could be done by two ways. The easy and expensive one is to use 3 decoders (1 loco,2 lights) or use 1 and wire across cars.

    @DanielSander 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    great vid but be careful with the couplings they can break very easly and the class 158 and 170 have the same couplings as far as i'm aware of if so they could be a DMU Pair but cross country don't own 158s sadly

  • @MarkMaddyGriff
    @MarkMaddyGriff 12 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @PayasYouListen
    @PayasYouListen 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The internal coupling is the standard European HO type. Bachmann also use it on other DMUs like the 108. It's very reliable.

  • @EMDSD14R
    @EMDSD14R 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am not sue if your aware of this or want to do this but there are actually two way's to connect make them DCC. First way you could use female and male micro plugs between the cars. You could have a speaker in each end car for the sound and have those speaker's connected via those plugs to the power center car which would contain the sound decoder. The lights would go the same way connecting to the decoder. Second option is to put a DCC decoder in all the cars with the two end cars having the speakers and sound decoders. Extra pickup's more then likely will be needed for this. But you wouldn't need to drill out holes for those emu plugs and each unit would be self contained so it wouldn't be an issue to couple and uncouple them. If you plan to upgrade her I look forward to seeing it when its finished!! :-)

    In my opinion, you should be the marketing guy for Hornby/Bachmann. I have purchased some of their products especially after going through your video's. Ur reviews are excellent, plus the way you do it, reminds us no matter how old we grow, there is still a lot of joy one can gain from this hobby. I just loved the amazing ViTrains Class 37 video you made !

    The 170 owes much of it's design to the Class 166, part of the design being copied were in fact the bogies, hence why Bachmann have suited reality and used the same bogies for each unit - because they are the same bogies.

  • @Xantec

    The 170 could also do with being a bit closer coupled, as there seems to be a longer gap between cars than on bachmann's Voyager 221

    These are brilliant units. Once my layout is built I will have 3 in operation, in MML, South West & Central Trains liveries.
    DCC is possible on these units as I have had my Central Trains (3 car) converted. There is the need for 3 decoders & an insertion of a socket for these, so unless you do it yourself it is a little pricey to go DCC, but well worth it.
