Life saver. I was thinkin about this this morning as my Chrapsman LT1000 riding mower 17.5HP Brigg has he infamous broken decompression lever (internally). Started lawn mowers as a kid this way. I'm on my dirt bike when I'm 3-4 miles out in the woods.
Done good reason is that a pulley bolted to an engine is inherently unbalanced meaning that your engine bearings are going to be stressed way beyond design.
Brother you are a life saver this idea worked great saved me from buying a new starter and starter solenoid for the time being. I Subscribed to your channel thanks again .
thats a great idea @fearlessfront, i saw this video and used this technique to build a pull start on my offroad mower project! the tractor starts right up typically. i couldve used this awhile ago on my other mudding tractor when i was in the middle of a field and i went to go start it again and the starter gear finally sheared off and it wouldnt turn the engine over, thankfully i bumped it off and it sputtered back to life and drove home. this video gets a thumbs up!
I have been starting my mudding more with a pull start for the mower for at least a year and have never had a problem and like he said it for a back up not going to be using it every he start the tractor. I like and go by all most all the videos you have made man I like them good learning. Keep them coming
Your videos really help me, My battery died in the middle of a romp so I thought I should build this pull start really saved my ass! Keep making videos on the Murray!
I have basically that exact rider except maroon.. she dead for sure... not sure if its a battery connection gone bad or what..cause the battery is only a year old.. I'm totally gonna use this method! Cause I won't always have a car around to jump start it..
I thought of doing that to mine instead of getting a new starter but feared the spinning rip cord of death or even worse... with your arm attached😕 But!!! PFFT It was easy!! I no longer fear!! I'm doing it!! I will have the privilege of an emergency rip cord in the trunk of my ride-on this weekend!!! Thanks from Australia friend👍
reallllly want to thank you. just blew my starter...and almost got rid of the free mower because of this issue. after doing this mod...one pull...and we got er runnin. now im checking over your wireing video to completely rewire the mower. thanks 1000X
Totally awesome. I love this. Since I had the option, I never used the electric start on my self propelled mower either. I don't have much use for electric start equipment.
you have saved me a bundle of money. I have two riding mowers with bad starters. Now I can buy time to save up money to have them professionally repaired. Thanks a bunch.
My issue is that 'lawnmower batteries' are good for a season at best. You have to keep a charger around all the time - and have it 'assist' the starting process. The issue with that, is these newer 'digital' battery chargers don't play well with mostly dead batteries, whereas the old (heavy, 'analog' or transformer) style chargers - which are nearly impossible to find these days - will work better.
gecooley995 mower batteries will last several seasons of properly cared for in the winter months i bring mine into my inclosed porch and keep a battery tinder on them i have 2 that are 4 years old still going strong
I used an old v belt car water pump pulley. I have a 93 signiture 2000 MTD VTwin. Just took off the debris screen, flywheel nut and sat the pulley on and ran the nut back down, Ground a notch like you did.. starts first pull and it's 20° out! Thanks for the idea to get my woods find in order!
Great idea...I have that very motor on my tractor mower and I often thought how neat it would be to have a pull-chord option. Not so much to save on batteries, they usually last 5 years at at time but if the starter motor failed/burnt out. Thanks for posting, very clever and well demonstrated..
Great Video! I watch all your videos. I have recently gotten a 92 Murray with a 12hp B/S and I will definitely be doing this modification this weekend along with the gas pedal mod and choke mod...
ROFLMAO... us old timers have been doing this for years. But it is good to share with a new generation. Good video. I am amazed at the folks that did not know you could do this.
Nice modification. “What’s old is new”. I had a Montgomery Wards tractor that had this as part of the engine along with the electric starter. It was used the beginning of just about every mowing season & until the end once the battery died.
hey fearless, im a big admirer of yours and love the rompin vids, how-to's, and other crazy creafions of yours. i took an interest in offroad mowers, racers, and a classic lawn mower of my own, and am looking to improve my channel, videos and also mowers! i would love to gear your thoughts and suggestions!!! and also i think you should try to throw a junk mower together out of the parts n pieces you dont need/use around the shop just for the hell of it! keep up the advice and great videos!
dude you are like my savior hahaha i got this old old mower, and i can't seem to find a battery for it(it was modded to have an electric start) so im going to do this to it. Thank You
Awesome video man, I have battery problems all the time, This is much easier than trying to find a shroud (with a recoil) for these size motors. This is such a simple idea, I love it.. Thanks
Got mine done today, but I used a plastic MTD drive belt tension-er, it already had holes for the screws, I started it twice like that.. But being plastic kinda scares me, I dont know what the max RPM for that pulley is or if over time the chance of it shattering would increase, I just didn't have a metal pulley laying around anywhere.
***** You know, I never even thought about it like that, but I have since then put a metal pulley on it, but I think I need to take a file and make the cut in the pulley a little dull, as it is right now its kinda sharp and cuts my strap/rope pretty quickly.
Great idea, probably the most common thing that goes wrong on riding mowers is battery related, don't know why they don't just have them all with a pull start plus the electric so you have a way to mow if your battery is dead.
pretty slick i am doing this to my 1999 crafstman yardman MTD since i do not have a battery or key to it and i was given it for free due to the range F N R shift rod assembly bieng gummed up and brake stuck rusted on,. which ive already disassembled and freed up and greased up new nice again. two new belts and pull start pulley on top and a toggle for ignition and new fuel hose and it will be a running mowing mower again heh, later i plan on ATV tires or at least dual rear tires on it,. and flat proof mod too.
Nice solution, thanks! I have an old mini bike (Super Bronc) and ride it in very remote Chickaloon, Alaska. I only have manual start on the 10 hp Tecumseh but want to have a backup method in case the primary recoil rope breaks.I'm going to take the recoil off and see what I can wrap a rope around for just in case. Thanks again, fb
IT IS A VERY THOUGHTFUL AND NICE IDEA, TO JUST TAKE YOU OUT YOUR PULL ROPE IN A PINCH WHEN YOUR BATTERY FAILS. THIS SHOULD BE STANDARD GEAR ON ALL ELECTRIC START TWO OR FOUR CYCLE ENGINES. IT NEVER HURTS TO HAVE A BACKUP DEVICE READY TO GO. GOOD VIDEO
I did this to on a 17 hp b&s you can also on my application use the flywheel built instead of bullying it down to we're the plastic disk would go it works really good and fires right up good video fearlessfront keep up the good work man
Awesome vid You don't need to notch the pulley if you overlap the cord.I've found if you don't smooth the cut enough it could hold the cord and pull back.
when I was a kid and mowing for extra money a lot of the mowers had hand wind rope start and they never broke except the knot on the rope and you just tie another knot you should pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug any time you are rotating the engine by hand as it only has to fire one time to cut your hand or take a finger off good video thanx
thank you for this. been having issues with my john deere L100. broke the starter gear twice (once today) and the starter just has no power left to crank this thing any more. did this conversion with a crank shaft pulley from a 350 sbc. had to take the engine cover off, but mowed about 3 acres today :) no problems. still need to bypass the safety switch under the seat and i currently wedge a board to hold the clutch to start it, but hey, frankendeere is alive!!! gonna do a pulley swap sometime and see how fast i can get this thing going. :) thanks
christian voluntarist survival removing the engine cover and using it prolonged under load can cause overheating. The shroud directs the air from fan blade on the fly over the fins of the head
that look like a great idea . if I was going to do it I would want to have the cover on it and still be able to do it like a push mower design spring setup so the rope go back up side around the pully but that might be a trouble if you are using the key switch
Another winning video! Mind throwing that on the forum? at first I thought you were doing it to the lifted one, but then i realized it was your murray! You know this might be better then lugging heavy batteries round..makes for extra space for something..
thnx for the video I wanted to do the same thing, but I thought that my b&s moter would be to heavy to pullstart but now I've seen that it works I'm going to do that to. so that's a like from me!!
I did that once but i used a normal pulley and welded it to the triangle thing. then torched out the center so i could still get to the big nut. Works good.
I love this idea of the pull start. I DO NOT have a battery for my 1983 Gilson Garden Tractor with a 18hp B&S. So with not having a battery & don't want to worry about buying one, so what do I do with my cables that would normally be attached to the battery? Thanks for your help & keep up the great work. I'm loving your youtube channel, it's very helpful.

I completed the modification to the mower and it works perfect. I don't see a reason to buy / repair the broken starter. Thanks again.
Abel Villarreal check t the videos where they start power equipment with an electric drill.

You Sir, are simply a lawn mower Guru!!!!!!
Brilliant. Reminds me of the ole Trick Trac we had on the farm when I was a kid.
reallllly want to thank you. just blew my starter...and almost got rid of the free mower because of this issue. after doing this mod...one pull...and we got er runnin. now im checking over your wireing video to completely rewire the mower. thanks 1000X
JUST what I needed to see. Totally getting this done in the next few days.
Thanks man, it's one of those things you dont really NEED, but your really glad you have it when you do need it!
Totally awesome. I love this. Since I had the option, I never used the electric start on my self propelled mower either. I don't have much use for electric start equipment.

i have one of those old 2 amp charger .i bought a MTD mower .

Old video standing the test of time. Havnt done this but about to. I was thinking how to do the same thing. Saved me from a headache. Thanks
smart idea! i like the snowblower tires on the front

5 yrs, mine die sitting over winter even with a trickle charger on them,
@@partymanau My current battery was made November 2019, got it at Walmart early spring 2020. Still going strong.
@@tynewlin I bet that battery is now 3 times as much, with BIDENFLATION!
I love this guy I watched his racing mower build for a least 8 hours
Works great on my yardmachine 12.5HP HUSKEE engine thanks man great video
Excellent Video- Explanation Superb-Super Diction! Thanks 2yrs Late!
Awesome........ Just gave my mower life..... Thank you man!
Great Video! I watch all your videos. I have recently gotten a 92 Murray with a 12hp B/S and I will definitely be doing this modification this weekend along with the gas pedal mod and choke mod...
Thanks man, it works good in a pinch! good luck on your build, it can feel a lot like work at times!
i've made it today, I just took an old mowerdeck pulley that i found an drilled 3 holes in it. it works for me my moter fired right up!!!
Love tha mods, I've built a john Deere with what you've taught me with the videos. Keep up the good work.
Wow precision job on centering pulley no wobble!
Thank You that is by far the best Idea i didn't have Lol. Thanks again I cant wait to use this idea
thanks for posting this video the same day you made it i did that to my lawnmower
Loved it! Your videos are awesome!
Great solution and video! Well explained.
hi I'm Zak the easy pull start for mowers really helped me out
This is awesome Fearless! Who wants to walk home anyways? Or push the mower back home....Great Job.
I didn't have a pulley so I used an old junk push mower wheel. It works great and it is easy to drill through!
ROFLMAO... us old timers have been doing this for years. But it is good to share with a new generation. Good video. I am amazed at the folks that did not know you could do this.
I know, right? Late 60's early 70's we had pull cords for a bunch of stuff.
Nice modification. “What’s old is new”.
I had a Montgomery Wards tractor that had this as part of the engine along with the electric starter. It was used the beginning of just about every mowing season & until the end once the battery died.

Simple and effective. I love it!
Your videos are awesome keep it up man
Im gonna have to do that on my mower, Great idea!
This is what I was going to do, glad it works!
Killer idea! I'm going to make 3!😉😉
thats a good idea right there. good job fearless!!!!
Good job. If that cheap and chinzy bendix (or starter drive) fails way back in the boondocks, you've still got a way to start.
I like it , you're a genius !
dude you are like my savior hahaha
i got this old old mower, and i can't seem to find a battery for it(it was modded to have an electric start) so im going to do this to it.
Thank You
I've been trying to figure one out for my briggs. that's perfect!

***** Every pulley on a lawnmower is made to spin at the engine's speed anyway. Probably just fine.
***** You know, I never even thought about it like that, but I have since then put a metal pulley on it, but I think I need to take a file and make the cut in the pulley a little dull, as it is right now its kinda sharp and cuts my strap/rope pretty quickly.
***** Round the edges really smooth.
Hell yes ... I wondered if this was possible ... Thanks Todd .
Well done i like the way you think
Awesome !! Did the same idea with my Yamaha 1000 sled ( but with a strap and Velcro )
Around the clutch
Great idea, probably the most common thing that goes wrong on riding mowers is battery related, don't know why they don't just have them all with a pull start plus the electric so you have a way to mow if your battery is dead.
I’m same. Sick of batteries every 3 years
I mean, they do have alternators. So worst case scenario put a jump box on it then it'll Charge back up once started.
Thanks, this is the best pull start idea i'v seen
Thank you! I actually did this and it worked!
pretty slick i am doing this to my 1999 crafstman yardman MTD since i do not have a battery or key to it and i was given it for free due to the range F N R shift rod assembly bieng gummed up and brake stuck rusted on,. which ive already disassembled and freed up and greased up new nice again. two new belts and pull start pulley on top and a toggle for ignition and new fuel hose and it will be a running mowing mower again heh, later i plan on ATV tires or at least dual rear tires on it,. and flat proof mod too.
brilliant, will give it a go on my hopefully 2nd mower soon
OK, I LOLed at "Centrifugal pull-starting cord of terror"
Nice Work fearless, I'm Going to try this tomorrow, see how it turns out.
This is excellent. I need this right now because my starter isn't working for some reason.

awesome!!!! been trying to figure something out for 2 years!!
I'm definitely doing this! I've been thinking of how I might be able to do this actually.
Thanks for sharing this helped me alottttt. smart idea
Awesome vid
You don't need to notch the pulley if you overlap the cord.I've found if you don't smooth the cut enough it could hold the cord and pull back.
Worked perfect on my mower! Thanks for the free fix for a shitty starter fearlessfront
Nice one! Going to do this to mine

I jus fried my second selenoid today on my oppy n and hadda getta tow lol. Deff need to figure tht one out for my motor tomo....thanks fearlessfront!
Great video! thank You Very Much for this Awesome idea. i will be putting one on my craftsman LT1000. keep up the Awesome work! :)
Thanks man, I wish I had done this long ago, I've had it die on me in some bad spots with a bad battery... had to push it, it sucked! lol
just did this to my friends ride-on mower, works like a "hot damn"! so convenient.
ok uve answered a qwestion ive been pondering thnks bro
great idea thanx for showing how todo that.
just what i needed , thank you
Another winning video! Mind throwing that on the forum? at first I thought you were doing it to the lifted one, but then i realized it was your murray! You know this might be better then lugging heavy batteries round..makes for extra space for something..

Great video
That is a brilliant idea why did I never think of that
we have a Westwood ride on mower and it won't keep the battery charged so I think I will try this. thanks mate for a great idea.
I did that once but i used a normal pulley and welded it to the triangle thing. then torched out the center so i could still get to the big nut. Works good.
Thanks I am going to make this modification with confidence to a old mower now too I think
Nice, you can enlarge those other holes beside the 3 used if you are unsure if it gets enough cooling.
good idea buddy thanks. rock on
I'm gunna do this cuz my flywheel is missing teeth and the starter won't grab. Thanks Fearless! You just saved me from replacing the flywheel!
Nice and quick modification of backup starter. :-)
Thats awsome.........great idea!
Thanks! Great vid!
really nice idea!
