    South Bend in name only. If it ain't got 3 vee's in the bed, it ain't a born and bred South Bend. Long live Monarch, Hendey , American, LeBlond and Cincinnati.

      most of those lathes are produced in the far east as well, I wish they still made south bend here in indiana, called the toolroom standard back in the day, that said there are many manufactures and machine builders here in the usa still, but not really the semi manual lathes, though bridgeports are still maid by wells index in michagan, and hardege in new england, and smaller shapers for making gears and inside cuts yes there are at least 2 that still do they are cnc versions though, and you got all kinds of presses and ironworkers that are, and several machining center makers but you pay up the wazoo for them

      @@bigboreracing356 A LeBlond Regal trumps any of those, and they were LeBlond's low end line. That said, a good American made lathe from 50-100 years ago is better than any newly made manual machine. Many of the good ones had replaceable hardened ways.

      @@bigboreracing356 a toolroom lathe run by careful machinists is something a sharp or a Kingston will never be, a *toolroom* lathe. The tailstock on a LeBlond Heavy-duty weighs as much as the bed of a new Kingston of comparable size. The apron is twice as wide, and the *replaceable* ways have far more surface area.
      As for the colchester, they were something clausing sold. They were roughly lathe like. The south bends were very nice for a hobby lathe. A EE Monarch is an absolute work of art, and a L&S Powerturn weighs *twice* what a new Kingston the same size weighs!

      These Far Eastern made South Bend branded lathes do still have a bed with three V ways, with two V ways guiding the saddle. It's difficult to see on this video because the guy left that silly great box plonked on the bed.
      But regardless of the name or where it's made, I still think it's quite a nice machine.

    Speedy- I learned your presence on the BR scene in 95 when a guy I encountered donated a two foot high stack of Precision Shooting magazines to me. Read every one of them multiple times before working dominated my life, until a couple of years ago retirement and the internet……and I found your Mentee, Mr. Eric C. I know you are busy. I know you have work stacked up. But you have the skills to do wonderful videos! Come on Senior Speedy, more of this sharing your knowledge. Not how to bughole, you gotta keep some for yourself, but you have probably forgotten more about reloading and shooting than 98.753% of the world’s population is even aware of. More videos, please?
    P.S. - Shiraz owes you a couple more hats for this killer PR presentation 😂. If you hang with that guy long enough you may be building guitars for relaxation!

    Thanks for the video Speedy. I just got my first lathe this past year. Well taken care of Taiwanese belt drive. The best part is it came with a shooter and gunsmith who showed me how to chamber through the headstock using a pusher setup. This week I finished working up loads for my first barrel that I completed last week including profiling, and it's the best shooting barrel I have ever owned....and I am just getting started.

    My first lathe project in 1965 was a set of screwdrivers and a set of light hammers. The lathe was a fully manual Southbend. No comparison to today’s machine. My lathe needs are light and fine. I’ll stick with my 1983 Emco Super-11. Don’t need no stinkin’ readouts….😜. I’m happy to see YOUR dream lathe now sits in your shop! Enjoy!

    heh yes on the part about being one master in the shop, you must work hand and hand with your tools they make poor masters same with electronics you must control your use and time so as not to become addicted or waste you life away on them or be slave to your phone, and like I say you let you tool get the best of you it will kill you or maime you, you also dont want to abuse them because like an animal it will only take soo much before it comes back at you, a true master handles his tools like they are an extention of his or her own body this is true for a machinest, a warrior or martial artists, or tradesperson with hand tools or blacksmith, and a master works symbioticly with his or her tools and machines, cars, or other vehicles, I am not really there yet with my tools but I can use them more fully for what I need to do, I mean to say I am not instinctive yet but I am pretty good with a bandsaw or dremel tool, the router though and lath for wood you must have a healthy respect for two of the most dangerous in the shop but also most versital for differant jobs.

  • @randymagnum143
    @randymagnum143 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Meehanite is simply a casting process. It is not the material. A good lathe would have replaceable hardened ways. The angled front way on a LeBlond is by far superior to 90 degree v ways. A wide bed, and an apron that extends past the headstock and tailstock is certainly preferred. A 2 speed quill in the tailstock is also a desired feature. A nice, heavy tailstock with significant length of engagement with the bed, and a deep, gusseted bed for rigidity.
    For a few thousand dollars, one can purchase a lathe from the golden age of machine tools that would absolutely put any harbor freight level machinery to shame.

    Probably a Lodge & Shipley Powerturn, in such a small size. A 2 E Monarch is absolutely unbeatable in a toolroom machine. The Heavy Duty LeBlond's will last for several lifetimes.

      Electric motors have 100% torque at any rpm. At least that's what they told me, I have not actually tested it. Next time you bog down a 5hp motor, make a video please.

      @@Crypto666 Some people just quote other sources of information without understanding what they are talking about. It's almost as if you have only owned a single lathe and don't really know how to use it. Let's say I need my lathe to turn a 1" diameter piece of stock. So I need RPM's for about 100sfm. Now I want to turn a different piece of stock with 10" diameter. To achieve 100sfm, I need to reduce rpm's by a factor of 10. If I want to maintain the same tool load, I will also need 10x the torque to deal with the larger radius of the the workpiece. This is why the gear head lathe was invented.
