Today I'm discussing the Frederic Malle Desert Gems collection which includes The Night, Promise, Dawn and The Moon, fragrances featuring Rose in all four, 3 with Oud including The Night, Dawn and The Moon and one boozy for Promise but four quite intense, very Middle Eastern inspired fragrances. The Night was launched first in 2014 and The Moon was launched in 2019 and I just got my bottle of The Moon and I'm in love with it. Have you tried The Moon? I have only sampled promise and not the others but i think promise is absolutely amazing! Masterpiece in my opinion!

I love Frederick Malle scents. Especially, Portrait of a lady, bigarate concentrate, and Carmel flower. I smelled The Night at Barney’s in Las Vegas. They would not sample me any to take back home to San Francisco. I noticed how it smelled very strong and almost like a barn. They did explain that it contained 60% of real oud. The only memory I had of it was what I had sprayed on a card which I had placed in my large leather zip wallet and forgot about it. One day I opened my wallet and the most beautiful scent came wafting out and it was the Night. I then called the Barney’s in San Francisco and the guy that worked in the Frederick Malle section gladly sent me a couple of the samples. I should have purchased a bottle when they went on sale at Barney’s during their last days. Very soon I’ll have the promise and the Moon in my small collection.
This line is the most elegant fragrance line along with Tom Ford Private Blend imo.

I just reviewed the *Moon* and it is a fantastic scent. I get the leather facet from oud more than a dark skanky oud, mixed with sweet rasberry shisha, a divine scent without a doubt. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it.

Hi Sebastian. This is a great video! From this collection I tried Night and Promise but I only own the latter. May the odd one in this lineup but I love it. Night is indeed one to get used to but being a lover of oud that won’t take as long as to get the funds ;). You got me interested in Moon. As soon as I can I’ll try that one. I’ll let you know. Merry Christmas!!!!! Thank you for awesome reviews. I got my Promise today as a Christmas gift from my husband. He cannot stand perfumes, yet has to live with me (a person who would never go to bed without my perfume on):) anyway, Promise is now my favorite. I love FM fragrances. They are the best! I have a huge collection but there is nothing like FM.

That’s right, The Moon is rght in the middle between The Night & Dawn in intensity, so for those for whom The Night is too intense, The Moon is just a notch down. All 4 are great concoctions in their own right, but the quality of the Oud in The Night is still the best I’ve ever smelled, with BTV Nebulous coming as a relatively close second.✌️

I think I read somewhere that "the night" was intended to be an oud version of portrait of a lady as Frederic kept hearing people say they think or pick up oud in POAL and he said 100% there is not so he made a version with it.
I can certainly see where people may pick up an oud note in POAL. It has a very similar base that you get in a lot of rose-synthetic oud combo.
The Night gut punches you with real oud and has POAL tied up and ball gagged in the background.

Promise is definitely a keeper. And you know me. I keep my Promise.
All the collection are 👌. But the Night is the one which stood up for me. You can't imagine how much scent trail you will leave behind you. But the price will make you cry 😭.

I own Promise and live it. I did sample the Night and did like it a lot but cannot justify the price. I have been trying to find the Moon but doesn’t seem to be easily accessible yet.

The moon has insane sillage I thought you would’ve mentioned that. It’s almost as big as interlude man. The whole desert gems is really about beast mode sillage. They are so much bigger than the average Frederic Malle.

Carlos Benaim created both Frederic Malle Dawn and Polo Supreme Oud which you’ve talked about before. Interested in your comparison between those two.
Oh man they are so so different. Someone used to Polo Supreme Oud might be challenged with Dawn as it's animalic not as much The Night though but still. I would suggest getting a sample if you are curious! :)
I own HdP Fidelis which is the predecessor of The Moon and I'm obsessed with it. It acts olibanum-y and wannabe fruity in the cold and rose-oud-y in the less cold. I'm up to chase down Promise, but Dawn and The Night is not my thing and not just because of their prices.
I find fidelis and the moon extremely different.

Yes, just less than the night or dawn.
The Moon seems to be a really tempting fragrance for me, but FM should allow us to order factory samples from this collection, won't blindbuy a fragrance for this amount of money... at least do a travel 10ml available for testing
Ferenc Szombati i blind bought it and its now one of my favorites. If you like smokey fruity leather and with huge projection it might be your thing.
I filled out the "find your signature" form and asked for a sample of Promise and they sent it to me along with 5 other scents for free.

Dawn is Sublime. The Moon is good but overly sweet sometimes to my nose. Promise is beyond gorgeous.
I seriously wonder how come any fecal note can still render a fragrance sophisticated and good smelling. Have two fragrances with oud but most likely synthetic, given how affordable they are:
-Bentley Man Absolute: strong incense, but somewhat animalic, to me almost in the body-odor direction though, but not fecal for sure.
-Banana Republic 17 Oud Mosaic: to me not animalic at all, makes me think of some wines not sure why, possibly some olfactory memory of mine. In any case, also for sure not fecal whatsoever.
I’m debating between promise and portrait of a lady. What would you suggest? Because I bought French lover , it smells great , but man honestly after a hour and half it’s completely gone. I don’t even smell it even if I rub my skin lol. Please let me know thanks.

So I bought Promise, I def liked it but ended up selling it... Then pulled out my sample one day - which I then bought a 100ml bottle (2nd bottle) of shortly after. Ended up selling it again about a month later😄

None, it‘s a different scent from the desert germs that‘s why it‘s the cheapest of the line.

It’s very sweet, the raspberry and lychee notes hit you like a train in this one. It’s definitely my least favorite of the gems.

I think it's totally unisex. I'm a woman and when I wear The Moon (only in evenings) I just feel very mesmerizing and sexy. It really projects, though.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian- Aqua Universalis Forte
I like and own all of them in 50ml. Except promise is 100ml. All of them are exceptional, I enjoy Promise the most, if I had to pick one.
I love Promise I need to grab another from this collection not sure where to go next.

Hey Sebastian, I have a question. Since we can't buy everything available in the market. What would be the ONE and only ONE house if you were allowed to pick only one. A house you personally believe is a complete and the best house.
Frederic Malle, Jovoy, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Roja Parfums, Xerjoff are Top 5 houses for me currently. Tough to just go with one house as not all houses have everything I want make sense?

I think the prices are expensive
For me I find ‘Promise’ is very dry and reminds me of a dryness of desert.
Promise, at first you won’t like it, your nose needs to get used to it, once it does, you’ll start loving it, it’s really strong!
you're associating the cold of your churches experiences to the incense of Dawn while when incense is utilized in warm climates it is just as beautiful and "warm"

The moon is supposed to smell like a shisha and it does to me . It smells like a raspberry shisha with oud chips and leather .
