My favourite oud from that house is the Moon, which is sweetened with berry notes (and less aggressively priced). Dawn and Night are rather faecal, and Promise has a lot of cypriol oil, making it rather green and dry for my taste. The brand makes all the bottles the same with the idea that the fragrance speaks for itself, although their oud ones are in gold boxes...
I came across this when I was getting into ouds (how I found you). Given the absurd cost, I only put in for two ml's just to see. When I tried it, I knew I was eventually going to have a bottle. Took about six months to find one for a "reasonable" price that I was willing to pay (about 50% from MSRP). That said, this shares similarities to Portrait of a Lady which is something I do enjoy quite a bit also...which you weren't fond of also. I do admit, the packaging is disappointing given how bloody expensive this is. But Frederic Malle's packaging is very lackluster to begin with. You seem like a good dude. I appreciate your reviews, and feel like I’ve won something when you give something in my collection a positive review! Keep it up:)
It takes 3-4 hours for the extreme barnyard smell to soften down. Then it becomes sweet, smooth and extremely wonderful! Lingers over 12 hours. This becomes more beautiful hour after hour. It is impossible to rate this properly and genuinely right after spraying it on. Unpalatable right away, the most wonderful and long lasting after time passing away. Thanks dear professor ATH for the enlightenment and honnest opinion of the perfume industry. For this specific and so expensive ,over priced oud based perfume. You the boss.
So glad you gave us that brief lesson on oud. Master oud distiller, Ensar Oud, also talked about this in one of his videos and basically said that an oud that is properly distilled and processed is extremely smooth, regardless of the region it comes from.
The barynardish smell is not intrinsic to agarwood. It is due to the soaking of the agarwood which causes microorganisms to act upon it and this imparts the fecal/barnyard smell to the oud. Why is this done ? To increase yield
I have smelled the entire collection and I do not remotely like any of them. I am adventurous with fragrances, but these ones are too challenging for me. Thank you for your honest review. I have subscribed.

Aaron - what is your favorite synthetic oud material? I recently picked up some Black Agar (Givco) and some Oud Synth 10760 (Firmenich) and quite enjoy these materials, but am not sure how they compare to the real deal which is so bloody expensive!
You're absolutely right. Only reason to get it is for the price - Just spent almost a grand on this.....just because I have Moon / Dawn / Poison and I am not too keen on it BUT I have it and I will wear it - probably layer with Moon which is PHENOMENAL!
A honest and informative review as always. I learned so much about perfumery on your channel! The concept of Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle is quite unique, although I don't like the scents very much. I think he (Frederic Malle) gives a chosen perfumer infinite budget, no briefing and let them create a fragrance in their own likes. A very popular Oud fragrances for you to review would be Alexandria II by Xerjoff. It would also be cool if you could test Bois d'Argent by Christian Dior and Jubilation XXV by Amouage. Cheers!
Thanks for the bit on how they process oud, with or without oxygen and how that affects the smell qualities, also about the iso e super-hedione-musc vs musc-iso e super-hedione in eastern/wester style perfumes, very informative. And 7 is quite the high mark lol
Thanks for the quick lesson on oud. You should do a series where you discuss one note/accord/compound per video. Unless, of course, you've already done that and I'm late to the party :-)
I've got a 50ml of this and i am not upset by this review. I rather have someone who is subjective and have their own thoughts then someone that just hype stuff. But i will just say, i love this one. Although i think that "the moon" is better because of the raspberry. Because i love this one is because of the rawness and non apologetic nature of it. that is my 5 cents worth :)
I own a 50ml of "The Moon". First, on paper I liked it. Now, a year later, I find it too sweet. It smells like a Energy Drink. It's awful. It reminds me of Tuscan Leather. But "Moon" is loaded with Sirup of Raspberry's. Annoying.
I do love it based on having a 3ml sample. I haven’t bought a bottle though. It’s so pricy. And I’d only wear it for my pleasure. I don’t think anyone would enjoy it around me. I like the Rose in it but it takes a bit to find it. 7/10 is quite fair though.
I guess this one is unique for being the first one you review and that it contains real oud. We found it finally. I hope you will review some fragrances from Histoires de Parfums i really want to hear your opinion/review on them especially for "1740"
A THOUSAND pounds for 100ml.....More money than sense to buy this ! I'd much rather spend half of that on your work which is far superior and for less and you get so much more ,,,,WIN WIN . Keep the videos coming Aaron,,,,I like them very very much !
i have it, i like it and don't in the same time. it's weird. i live in london and it's been the least complimented perfume i have. evenmore, i got the 'that smells awful' on it. It's very intense and i only need 2 sprays to smell 12 hours+. In one year i think i've gone through 10-15ml of it.
Are you familiar with The Perfume Nationalist podcast? It's an art podcast that pairs a perfume with a work of art that symbolizes the perfume. It is brilliant. You should go on.
Just curious are you sure this product is authentic? 🤔 I mean yeah it seems like a fragrance which costs so much would have awesome packaging and would smell outstanding.
I have smelled this in my local niche Perfumery and I had a similar experience with the fragrance. And I'm pretty sure the 10ml bottles they were selling had the exact same packaging so I'm very sure this is authentic.
I have The Moon, and tried The Night in Selfridges and was horrified haha. The girl said that some guys got hold of the bottle and sprayed a load on his mate who then threw up haha. Crazy - I can understand why, it’s a love or hate but for me it was a hate because of the super pungent decal smell. I personally don’t want to smell like shit - Oud yes, but the fecal kind, no. I’ll stick with The Moon (which took a lot of getting used to. Didn’t like it at first)
Did you pick up on any blue cheese vibes? I kept hearing people say that this has a cheesy, fecal smell, but all I get from my sample is ammonia and piercing rose. I don't have an official sample, so maybe that's the reason. Thanks for the review.
I don't have it but have smelled it, my brother has a small bottle of it, he got it for his retirement from work, and I really don't like it, and neither does he, I get the farmyard reference, I can get a whiff of eggs from it, I think, there's definitely something eggy about it to my nose.
Ps thanks for the education too. It's made my experience of the DNA more interesting and I can spray friends with it for fun, while telling them where the barnyard smell comes from :)
100% agree with your statements. If money were no object, I would perhaps grab a sample and consider buying it....but I'm married with 2 children who go to school....so I'm broke! For this price, I would expect it to release massive amounts of endorphins and transfer me to a fluffy cloud!

Watch Halston on Netflix if your into perfumes. They have an entire episode on his fragrance. Really interesting.
Gr8 description 👌🏻👌🏻 but please Aaron can u do a comparison between this one and Boadicea the victorious nabelous which contains real oud too 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for the quick lesson on oud.
That’s what the person said who owns it. Thank you for your comment
@@AaronTerenceHughes Well thank you! And stay awesome!
I own a 50ml of "The Moon". First, on paper I liked it. Now, a year later, I find it too sweet. It smells like a Energy Drink. It's awful. It reminds me of Tuscan Leather. But "Moon" is loaded with Sirup of Raspberry's. Annoying.
Would you layer it maybe?
Nothing smells better than this
What’s good bro? Keep pushin man💯💯
Appreciate it
So it contains ✨real oud ✨ but not real saffron? Weird. Great review as always, we appreciate the honesty.
I love frederic malle dessert gems collection, my fav is promise!
I hope you will review some fragrances from Histoires de Parfums i really want to hear your opinion/review on them especially for "1740"
And Eau De Space is another cool one. It's a novelty fragrance that smells like outer space.
The Night is a masterpiece. The only perfume I will take to a desert island.
@@cadler264 you mean is more a summer fragrance? I have it, use it once in last winter and i was scared to wear it again…
You never go so many sprays with nights hahahah. Wow!!
I would love to see you review Xerjoff Malesia
It should be revisited.... despite the price this is a really nice one....🤷🤷
Lord Jesus have mercy!!🙏what prices are this???🥴😵😟
I have The Moon, and tried The Night in Selfridges and was horrified haha. Didn’t like it at first)
Well, at least it's got Oud in😅. I have been tempted to buy a sample of this for a while but wanted to see a decent review first, so thanks for that.👍
Good morning Aaron, enjoyed, appreciate your honesty, be safe and BLESSED
Did you pick up on any blue cheese vibes? I kept hearing people say that this has a cheesy, fecal smell, but all I get from my sample is ammonia and piercing rose. I don't have an official sample, so maybe that's the reason. Thanks for the review.
I don't have it but have smelled it, my brother has a small bottle of it, he got it for his retirement from work, and I really don't like it, and neither does he, I get the farmyard reference, I can get a whiff of eggs from it, I think, there's definitely something eggy about it to my nose.
I have a dupe that has the fecal note... So winner... In a way lol
Ps thanks for the education too. It's made my experience of the DNA more interesting and I can spray friends with it for fun, while telling them where the barnyard smell comes from :)
Speaking the Truth in your own industry ? Brave and bold.
If I had a £1000 I'd be thinking how much Neroli. rose and real Mysore sandalwood I could buy and even have change for a chunk of ambergris
I agree with you
Aaron like your honesty review don’t give a shit about Brands
Where did you get the 7.5 ml I’ve been trying to find one to smell this
I got it from the site. www.fredericmalle.eu/product/19566/50265/perfume/the-night/by-dominique-ropion#/sku/82577
100% agree with your statements. If money were no object, I would perhaps grab a sample and consider buying it....but I'm married with 2 children who go to school....so I'm broke! For this price, I would expect it to release massive amounts of endorphins and transfer me to a fluffy cloud!
And drive your children to school and lay your food bills
I make a lot of decants for myself and I always label them with the perfume's name and brand. I think I'll also add the perfumer's name from now on.
I think that’s a beautiful thing to do.
