- And lo, RNGsus did look down from probability heaven, and cast His dice with great mercy for XCOM. And thus, XCOM did smote the mighty foe before them. -- Watch live at / markzerogaming
Update: I absolutely cannot believe that this video broke 100k views. Thank you everybody!
XCOM logic:
95% chance to hit the boss: Fails to hit.
5% chance to instantly kill the boss: Succeeds to excecute.
That's XCOM baby!
Technically less than 5% because it would have to first hit and then pass the 5% chance check. So that's a 4.75% chance at max.
That's how probability works. The human imperfect mind simply fails to notice all the times 95% DOES succeed, and all the times 5% doesn't (except those, of course, are very few cause people most likely aren't gonna take that chance)
In 5% of the times it works every time
I'm a half glass full kinda guy. Technically, everything is a 50/50. Either it does or does not happen.
Too bad it usually "does not happen" for me in XCOM.
RNGsus giveth, RNGsus taketh.
Praise be unto RNGesus.
Neilas Astelan truer words have never been said
We give thanks to the RNGesus
Amen
An abusive relationship with the player really.
My first time through Xcom 2, I overwatch executed the final Avatar as it spawned, felt kinda cheap but I laughed for a solid hour at how easy it was, luck it most legitimate tactic in this entire game.
It certainly can be.
That happened to me too on my first playthrough.
15 % chance roll to instantly execute an enemy is not luck if you have a max squad, its almost the same mathematically as 100 % you will execute the enemy if you have the mod on all squadmates. By equipping it on all squad mates, you basically guarantee each turn has a decent chance of ending with at least one practically free kill w/ the top tier version of the mod.
@Vaperius The chance to get an execute with 6 soldiers using 15% repeaters is 62.2%. In reality it's even lower since not every soldier might get off a shot and some shots might miss. That being said it's still a very viable tactic.
During the early days of this game, when I did my first ironman play through, I was on a mission where I knew there was a Sectopod in the area, but I hadn't encountered it yet. I finished cleaning up a squad of troops and then set up one guy on overwatch before ending my turn.
Moments later, the Sectopod burst through the side of a nearby house. Several of my men were flanked and out of position. I was almost certain someone wasn't going to make it out alive. My overwatch soldier took his shot and for a while I thought the shot had missed, because the animations froze for what seemed like a solid minute. As if the game could not fathom what was about to happen. Then, the Sectopod exploded spectacularly and I sat in stunned silence as I realized what had happened.
That was XComs why of saying sorry for missing the hundreds of times where you had a 95% chance to hit or higher.
Yup! That was all of my 95% flanked miss karma being repaid all at once.
Love that 99% hit chance misses, especially when it's guaranteed to crit
I have seen 100% chance miss but not happen to me personally but 99 yeah I missed one the other day.
Then the car explodes and kills clutch and the civilian.
Yup, that's XCOM baby.
it wouldnt matter because you can capture or kill dark vip's
The car didn't even catch fire.
Marq FJA You're clearly fun at parties.... 😒
3:30 someone is getting a fucking promotion
She got a nickname change to "Watch This"
either that or "hold my Beer"
That would've been a good one too!
"Betchu can't end a Berserker queen with one shot."
"HOLD MY BEER"
"Soldier shaken"
Same thing happened to me with the archon king. Somehow, I'd managed to kill the fist two ruler aliens before I'd even upgraded my guns to magnetic guns, so the archon king showed up and I was still using level one weapons and I was like, "I'm fucked, but I'm not gonna make it easy for you!" With that in mind, I had one of my grenadiers fire at him and I had attached to the weapon a basic repeater and a basic stock. Needless to say, I fully expected to watch my entire squad get massacred, but that first shot missed, but the stock allowed it to still cause damage and that was enough for the repeater to activate and execute the king. I ended up finishing the mission without getting hit once.
Before that happened, I was an agnostic. Now, I go to church every Sunday.
(That last part was a joke.)
Nice! RNGesus works in mysterious ways.
Wow, that's what just happened to me recently, one of my soldiers that had an advanced repeater however saved my squad from the Archon King executing it
so wait, that still happens? I thought I heard they changed it in a patch or something to make rulers immune to repeaters.
Nope, in the base game rulers are absolutely susceptible to repeaters. You have to mod that out, either with the standalone mod or Long War 2.
huh, I've been living a lie.
I was on a similar mission when the beserker attacked and my team was on a building getting ready to evac, I had to blow the floor beneath him and every other access point to the roof to stop it.
probably the coolest moment in the entire game, having to think on my feet.
Oh man, that sounds wild! Those soldiers must've been really sweating with a monster on the ground floor trying to get to them and no safe way down.
while I've never had to do that with a queen I've had to do that to multiple advanced mec troopers
All I did was put soldiers at the top of all the ladders so she couldnt climb up
Bullshit... This doesn't rectify all of my _"95% chance to hit"_ misses especially when flanking.
There needs to be a mod that adds a sound effect of a dice roll every moment you make a low/high chance decision, I'd go insane from that alone...
I feel like I need to do an XCOM "dice shaming" video of 80%+ flank misses.
Mark Zero Gaming
Do that, then compile all of the low chance shots you make, then do a comparison video.
If the low chance shot hits outnumber the high chance shot misses then I think we've proven XCOM is rigged...
you dont know real pain everytime i have 100% or 99% its a fucking graze RNJesus why?
It wouldn't, because you take high chance shots all the time and low chance shots almost never (except for gatekeeper). If he would actually document all attempts and have a high enough sample size for low chance shots, than that might prove xcom is rigged.
I mean, if I ever get antsy for a project, I might do a few missions where I take literally every single shot I'm presented with no matter how bad the chances are, and people can throw math at it.
I think the high percentage misses are what stick with us because we condition ourselves to think that anything above a certain number (mine is about 70-75%) is just absolutely going to hit.
Side note - I'm playing a Long War 1 campaign with Perfect Information on and it's interesting to see how many times the aliens successfully land low percentage shots.
I also got lucky with the queen on my last campain, a 5% repeater killed her in the first turn from overwatch :)
Darius Sibiu same happened to me!
Same
I WISH.... i got my highest level grenadier punched off a 3 story building, through the second story balcony and ultimately landed next to an andronmedon.... by the damn beserker queen.... she's scary without a little luck 😫
Same xD
Same recently. Was doing a facility and it came out of nowhere, one overwatch shot from the team is all I had after finishing off a pod. Executed.
I've had a few lucky executes on Alien Rulers and Chosen.
The funniest Berserker Queen engagement I had was one in which the Queen was triggered at a distance, but couldn't see any of my soldiers, and so she set about killing an entire pod of Advent troops.
Oh shit a boss alien!!! She's gonna kill- aaaaaaaaand she's gone!
You executed a queen?????!!!!!! I can not believe your luck!
Chris Martindale I believe something like this is called Regicide.
The same thing happened to me. One of only two occasions when my sniper’s repeater came good. I was stunned and a little bit incredulous when the word “Executed!” flashed up on screen. The other time was on a measly Sectoid.
I hope he played the lottery after that.
Lost on every ticket. Guess I used up all my luck on the shot.
well, lottery has definitely better odds.
On my last playthrough, I had a repeater attached to my rookie support and she fucking nailed a one hit kill on the Archon king. I loved her and made sure she survived to see the end of the war.
That soldier could have strolled into a Home Depot filled 5 feet deep with white golf balls blindfolded and picked up the one black one in the whole place on her first try with luck like that.
Ines Ruiz was quite good at what she did.
Ha ha what!!!
Is it just me or is that not the longest analogy ever...
I remember my ranger executing the archon king on my first encounter, it was glorious.
That EXACT same thing happened to me yesterday. The archon king was doing his cinematic introduction screen and suddenly at the same time 3 achivements popped (that confused me at first). Then he trigger 2 overwatchs,, 1 pistol Miss,,, and a ranger executed him with the second.... gg
She was like "Mein Lieben!"
Vahlen wept.
What language is that and what is it supposed to mean?
@@nickkohlmann German, pretty sure it means "My Labor" or "My Creation" something to that effect
Thrawnmulus It means “My love”
Ha , the good old Wolfenstein
Executing bosses is great. I executed the Julian Sectopod my first shot
Now THAT must've been satisfying! Julian: "I am so much smarter than you, and I will now destroy you all, and recla-" ::BLAM!::
Yes same! I executed Julian as well. He barely did anything. As it was tho when I faced Julian, my soldiers were fairly strong so I was expecting a fair but not necessarily excessively difficult fight. Nope. Repeaters are gods gift and Ethereals fear that weapon attachment.
A Singular Strike~!
Mortality clarified in a single strike!
How quickly the tide turns- All i could hear when the queen died
This is brilliant.
Darkest dungeon is always a win
Ghoulish horrors, BROUGHT LOW
misses a 95%, hits a 5%. RNJesus taketh and he giveth!
And this is exactly why you should always have that instant kill equipment on even if it's just 5% chance.
The execution weapon attachment always leaves me with a shocked face of joy. Because it always seems to pick the right enemies to kill. The amounts of clutch moments I have had with it is insane. I love this attachment.
Mate, got that execution on every one of the bosses but only after taking serius damage. Felt really fucking good to see the floater one just drop out of the air. Don't knock repeaters, when they rock their magic it is something else
I had the exact same thing happen with my first playthrough when I encountered the Berserker Queen.
NO. FRIGGING. WAY.
HAIR TRIGGERS FOR LIFE.
Reminds me of the time Last ruler alien was escaping, and going to book it after a single action. Only team member who had actions left was my sniper. First she missed a 99% shot, after which Hair trigger activated, and she hit the second one and killed the alien.
"Delta 6, take the shot!"
::BANG!:: ::miss!::
... ... ...
::BANG!:: ::thud!::
... "What, hit-scan is a legitimate sniping tactic!"
No fuckkn way...
I would have looked up to god and said.
Why not 2 turns ago!!!!!
Impressive, very nice. . . . Let's see Paul Allen's overwatch reaction shot
Your reaction is *exactly* the same as mine would have been if that had happened to me.
that 5% chance to insta-kill really came through?!!
"Welp. This is gonna suck."
For the queen that is! :D
0:06 - that is the ONLY correct reaction to this very first encounter
Not sure who thought letting the repeater attachment insta-kill bosses was a good idea but if it works it works i guess
Almost all counters for the rulers are inefficient or unavailable early game: I guess letting repeaters one shot them actually gives you a chance. If in a blind run you meet an Archon King too early (unaware of the fact that completing the nest mission is going to trigger the spawn of the rulers), he’s likely going to massacre your whole team on his first encounter.
One time I managed to encounter a Queen on it's turn while my whole team was on overwatch. That took care of a third of health. Then a mixture of freeze bombs, acid grenades, and flame grenades ate through it's armor and made it's movement almost nonexistent. It got about half way to me before a sniper crit destroyed it.
You see, a 5% triggering is the same as a 95% NOT triggering, so it only makes sense that it happens immediately
When she killed the Queen, Solider said. "Did you see that?"
I have this soldier named WatchDog. He's one of my favorites. I gave him one of those execution mods and he's used it well.
One time he killed the Archon boss on a reaction shot when it showed up on screen for the first time. That got me an achievement. That's not even the only boss he's executed.
Correction. His name is WARdog. He's executed the archon king once, and the berserker queen twice, and has a few other well timed kills under his Boonie Hat.
@@cameronwiley9412 nice name regardless, if his callsign were Watchdog, however, you might as well call him Aiden Pierce lol.
@@allopic3764 Right?
People: Hair Trigger sucks
Hair Trigger:
I killed the Berserker Queen accidentally by a epeater-attached sniper rifle when a sharpshooter was long-watching :P
I'm so happy this popped up in my recommended
That "oh shit" at the beginning basically sums up my entire time playing xcom 2 lmao
That happened to me. Two of my guys were down, one still had an action and the rest were to far away to help. One shot, one kill. Made my day.
Love that reaction. I love moments like that. Where it's just like hell fucking yeah
One of the best feelings in gaming. When that execute procs.
Gonna love that repeater
Had that happen twice so far. Still makes me smile!
Ah, good times. This reminds me of my first ever encounter with the Berserker Queen, where it wandered into LOS of my squad on Overwatch, and the first Overwatch shot taken had the repeater activate and execute her.
Pete and repeater were sitting on a boat, and Nebohtes puts repeaters on every gun until those three mobs are dead.
Luckiest beserker queen engagement now goes to EE with his one shot, one kill banish.
Gonna have to check that one out.
no joke this actually happened when i first fought the queen
I actually have him beat. I killed her the second she showed up with an overwatch shot from a sniper with a repeater, not even realizing it was her until I took a closer look at the model a few seconds later while trying to figure out what to do with the rest
nice
On a recent playthrough the viper king fight ended as quickly as it started he appeared moved and everyone on overwatch unloaded on him and one soldier executed him.
Next one Berserker queen fight was an avenger defense mission she rolled up close to the ramp and a ranger executed her too. (The one was hard)
Archon king first time he escaped 2nd time nearly killed him escaped again third time executed immediately after discovery him.
The 10% chance became a must have on all weapons.
RNG gives , RNG takes .
So many hours in this game, never seen this thing before. Kinda glad.
Same basic thing happened to me the very first time I encountered the Queen up there ;) All but one member of my squad was perched up on a ledge with Overwatch active because she was nearly the last enemy remaining; one guy has a 5% Execute chance -- She shows up, five shots ring out: MISS MISS MISS MISS EXECUTED! ...in that order. Got me a cheevo or two, too!
Hehehe... Reminds me of my fight against, I think the warlord, in his lair. He just revived himself, went into a monologue, stepped off his platform... and Mox with his puny bullpup just executed him on the spot.
I fell from my chair laughing 😂
Oh my god. You were so toast, but then... Bliss.
Yup. This was happening on a live stream, and I was mentally preparing myself for a possible squad wipe. And then I rolled a Nat 20 on Repeater BS. :)
Very Lucky shot by Goodnight.
Can't believe this was 5 years ago
I just found this game and love it. I always wondered if that 5% instant kill was worth adding, I'm sold.
So THAT'S where all my luck from my 95% HIT disappeared to when I needed it
In a war of the chosen playthrough recently was on the assassin's base mission. I destroyed the sarcophagus but most of my team was low health or blinded with multiple enemies to deal with. Used teamwork to give my reaper an extra shot and got execution on the assassin.
Had that happen a couple days ago. Really glad I picked up Xcom2 again after a couple of years off.
As soon as I saw you swap to the one with the repeater, I knew I was in for a clip
5% chance in XCOM is basically like never. I'd play the lottery if I were you.
Probably 5% chance to one shot is more likely than a 90% chance to it in Xcom tbh.
And your soldier is all like: "Git gud, Berserker bitch!"
Executions are always that one stat that I forget I even have on a weapon until it randomly decides to punk a full-health boss like that. And then I don’t see it again for 10+ missions.
That happened to me once with the Archon King. I was so amazed to see it die in one shot.
6 overwatches and 6 superior repeaters is my recipe for an Alien Ruler takedown.
One time I was set up to fight the Berserker queen I found her just outside my vision range so she wasn't "triggered" to fight me, and while she was out there for some reason she started killing the other aliens. She got like 3-4 of em before I finally encountered her.
I watch gameplay vs Beserker Queen where her positioning was such that she was exposed to being hit while not having a visual on the characters actions & so being shot repeatedly resulted in the Beserker Queen roaring occasionally....and dying or gittin' gone, of course.
I can't recall the channel/player/episode, maybe it was one of Marb's campaigns...???
Sometimes, just sometimes, I love a victory caused by a giltch
That was how I was able to get the achievement for killing a boss when first encountered, click fire and cross your fingers.
pretty much the exact same thing happened to me. I didn't even know what those Ruler things could do, and then suddenly the berserker queen appeared during the main mission, and it was kicking my ass. It was fairly early on in the game, I didn't even have magnetic weapons, so there was no chance for me to survive, let alone beat that thing. Feeling desperate, I just shot the shit out of him without cover, and luckily the repeater showed miracle and the berserker queen was executed. Best luck EVER.
could someone explain this mechanic i dont play xcom looks fun though
Sure! So, the soldier who shot and killed the Berserker Queen had a weapon attachment that gave her a 5% chance to instantly kill what she shot at. It happened to go off at the perfect time, and I wasn't expecting it, because my turn was going badly. :)
I’m suprised you even tried to fight it instead of just extracting immediately
Had that exact moment with the Archon boss (first encounter) during a Retaliation mission. He was in the air and I decided to send a ranger with a Repeater shotgun. Decided “fuck it” and fired at it and instakill’d it.
I had a similar engagement with the Viper King. Specialist (with the instakill perk) was on overwatch...King was executed instantly before he could even attack. A thing of beauty, but unfortunately not one that was recorded.
Misses on a 95%
Insta kills on a 10%
equipped full squad with repeaters - gtfo choosens of my way! every single mission has at least one member who executed some aliens on it. gotta love it!
I had the same thing on my second playthrough with the Viper king, my Sniper had a repeater on it, and one shot was all he needed. Needless to say he got the armor that was made out of it.
Unfortunately I imagine it's hard to look smug and confident while wearing a giant snake helmet.
It's not that hard, It's like Hercules wearing the Nemean Lion's skin.
There is almost nothing in gaming that is quite as satisfying as the clutch execution in XCOM, haha.
That was amazingly lucky! Awesome!
I've managed to execute the Viper King once before. It shocked me, as I wasn't even aware they could be affected by the instant kill chance. Kinda took the fun out of it, but I didn't complain lol
Man that repeater saved his butt
The first time I encountered the berserker leader was the same mission I just so happened to bring all 6 of my grenediers as a challenge. As I had extra turns left in the mission I took it extra slow throughout the final 50m to the evact zone. I then moved up one of my grenediers to see if it was clear, little did the berserker leader know is that all of my remaining grenediers were on overwatch and completely shredded his health and armor. It took 2 turns for me to take it out completely lmao
Executes the Berserker Queen while on Overwatch
XCOM: Wait, that’s illegal!
My luckiest moment was killing the Archon King with the 5% chanxe during Overwatch when he first appeared.
That happened to me when I encountered the Archon King for the first and last time when it's was trying to escape, so I froze it in place, next I'd used one grenadier's salvo and chain-shot ability to soften then with the two support guys put them on over-watch, finally finished him with my sniper.
RNGsus brought this video in my feed. Very lucky shot. Gonna have to reinstall X-Com 2 again now that I've watched this.
This happens every first encounter with the Berserker queen for me.
Having every soldier in the squads be a ranger and equipped with a superior repeater each helps a lot with rulers I think
I remember on a second encounter with the Berserker Queen, I lucked out with my sniper and got an insta-kill. I was amazed, because this was a lower level sniper than the previous engagement I had with the Queen, and she kicked my team’s ass of two generals, a couple of majors and a lieutenant. One general and two majors died getting that stupid thing to half health, then a lucky sniper shot is was ultimately ended it.
I had a very similar experience with the Archon King. Right as he tried to escape, I had one turn left with my Ranger before the King would get away through one of those portals and thought "why not" and activated Rapid Fire. First one missed, but the second one hit and executed him when he had like 3/4 of his health left. I laughed like a crazy person for the rest of the hour.
I'm subbing not because of the insane luck but because of the comment "Every revolution's gotta have a blooper reel.". With all the 99% shots i've missed...buildings i've blown up by "accident"...i can get behind that comment and the writer of it.
Thats XCOM baby!
good god, that's insane luck. :-D
god bless the execution upgrade
Same thing happened on my first run. On the mission the Viper King was introduced, the first shot to connect with the Ruler executed him. Got myself the Regicide achievement with one shot.
When a battle medic hits you with a random crit with syringe gun on tf2.
