I feel like teams around 2019 was the peak of CR esports. I went to watch Worlds in person this year and the experience was amazing, but just 8 players solo simply doesn't hit the same. Hey Ash, not sure why your mental health vid was taken down, but I thought it was great and hope you'll do more videos like that in the future. I was actually going to watch it again, and it seemed like others valued it, too. One of the things I appreciate about you and your vids is that you're a real guy who is relatable, which differs from a lot of content creators who are basically just a walking brand or talking head rather than genuine people. I really, really appreciate you and your openness, and this series you're doing through Clash history has been solid. Keep up the good work, man. I saw that vid and i gotta say it really hit me when most things like that don't, it's rare I find a message so genuinely good and helpful, as this persons saying it helped a lot of people. Not sure why it's gone but I hope we get a reason.

It's OK though - he's trying to make very different content on this channel right now, so it's might not be the best fit for that now. I'm sure he'll find ways to talk about things like that if he wants to though, even if it's not on the main YT feed. he always has :)

So, I was in Los Angeles when the 2018 CRL took place, and right before that, they auditioned for the color commentators (I might have the timeline a BIT off; it's been 6 years, and I have memory problems). I had NEVER seen Clash Royale, had no idea what it was, but I watched a few hours of the 2017 CRL and fell in love. Obviously, I didn't get the role I was trying for, but I loved watching the championship that year, and became a lasting fan of both Surge AND Ash.
Hey ash I’ve been a fan for years now. I seem to have missed a mental health video you made but I just wanted to show some respect because it’s not easy to talk about that stuff publicly. You are the best creator at being real and addressing real life issues. I remember you giving a lot of real relationship advice a few years ago and I genuinely took it with me and used it in my life. Love you ash I’ll never forget the relief and happiness your videos have given me. Lots of Love brother! I’ll never forget you.
I think a mix of individual and team would be cool… each team registers 4 players at the beginning of the year… individual CRL goes on as normal with players earning CRL points. The top 8 teams with the most points from their registered players go one to a team event after the individual world finals
Ultimately, Clash declined when it was apparent the devs made decisions without the input of the community. More levels without adding things to make the game interesting in the long-term. Heroes was the last ditch effort of creativity to infuse fun back into the game. Supercell is money hungry at the detriment to the game.
Amazing video, half way thru the video you said outloud exactly what I was trying to type. As a viewer, I completely lost interest after they abandoned the team format. It's easier to root for a team, rather than an individual. Also, the 1v1, 2v2, KOTH format felt so much better than a game of duels.
3 days is more than any of the teams finals had, you might mean the amount of hours it lasted. 2024 was the 2nd shortest world finals, lasting 6h 45m, next to 2019, which lasted 6h 39m. Personally I thought these are still good lengths but to each their own.
@@Foolbound282its kinda the worst of all worlds. The finals this year were like 1hr 45 minutes per day, if I remember correctly in the past it was one long day of exciting matches.
The problem isn't the format. Casual fans of the game seeing variations of the same decks. Players talking about the "meta". Any game gets boring after you make it so sweaty that it is too boring to watch. There needs to be a way to have a format where fans won't have to worry about seeing the same decks, different players. No one wants to see two players try to sweat each other to death.
15:50 Quick correction: The top 24 players would lock in a spot at the world finals. The 25th-56th players battled it out in a Last Chance Qualifier in 8 4-player brackets, where the the top player in each bracket would secure the final 8 spots of 2021 worlds.
Peak clash royale was that format in 2017 where Sergio Ramos was. As soon as they announced CRL with teams I was out, didn't even know they returned to individual tournament formar. That's the way Clash is meant to be, unfortunately they lost a lot of us with that change
The evolved cards for me is where things took a wrong turn. I play the game often, and if you don’t make any purchases it takes absolutely forever to grind out enough to get an evolved card. The game is still so fun and addicting to play
Think the power creep of cards and too many changes also affected the player and viewer engagement. Opinion is they have an "old school" battle arena with no champions/heros/evolutions, plus the stuff you said. I quit CR about 3 years ago when the pay gap became too big to overcome as a casual player
I remember Kings Cup 2 kinda being where Chief Pat started getting rubbed the wrong way by SuperCell. I think he was under the impression that it was going to be TH-cam content creators like himself, Ash, Molt, etc. teamed with average players. Instead it really ended up being them teamed with pros because the pro players hammered the average players right out of it.
I have said this many times before, I think the main why crl is not exciting anymore is because they removed the towers and that the world finals is the only lan. It was so exciting because of the live atmosphere but now it’s just boring and this year’s world finals set was absolutely nothing like the 2019 set which was brilliant. It now looks like an esports event rather than a clash royale event
Let's be real, fall of CRL was when they quit teams, you need those for orgs to reasonably commit to a bunch of players like we see it in CoC, with a few exceptions most CR pros are just self organized or sponsored by some Saudi Shaikh who throws a little money around to have his name on the trophy
My favorite game, made me stop playing COC. My friends never understood why i loved this game, but the changes man. My heart broke when i uninstalled this game.💔 I hated the changes.
The fact that the esports requires players to climb the leader board means that they need to buy all the royal pass, which make the game more p2w. Also, if you look in the shop, there are offers after offers which means that spc only cares about the money, not the players.
Ash, you forgot to mention CR China was separated from the international version a few years back and for quite some time these two versions were not quite the same thing anymore. They lost a lot of loyal China players at the time. That was a huge blow to supercell revenue.
Unfortunately, I believe that even going back to teams will not save crl. This is because all of the big teams from back in the day have already left clash royale completely which takes away some of the excitement and I’m sure that lots of the best players will struggle to find teams and there will be a huge imbalance, for example, SKCalalas already have most of the world’s best. Also, most of the players who made crl teams as good as it was are all gone. And I suppose that if it does go back to teams, it’s unlikely that they will switch back to every event being lan which is what was where most of the excitement came from
Hey Ash, I lost interest for CRL when it became an individual competition and I don't follow the competition news anymore. May someone reading this please tell me why Mugi (world champion x2) and Morten didn't participate to the finals this year? Did they stop playing?
They still play, but the system of qualifying, is incredibly tough and if you face Mo during the qualifiers or just have any bad luck with matchups you are incredibly fast out. I feel like Dagger Duchess Meta also was not favourable for them.😢
At this point i feel like supercell is just trying to make money out of it before the game finally dies by making cards OP and then nerfing in next update. The point is, in the solo era, only the very top players could survive as pro, so the player base for esports would be much smaller than the team format. You could have 2v2 specialists and KOF specialists in teams, they could have stable income and share the prize if their teams succeed. But in the solo era, only the very best players earn money through this game, so those who couldn't win consistently would quickly quit. Individuals are frail, and that's why teams exist. Maybe it's just the pandemic changed too much.

Just bring back teams…solo is straight up boring. I didn’t even watch one single game this year, and I 100% predicted Mo to win. It’ll be more interesting if these players were on team since it will make it unpredictable of what will happen if one player on a team decides to have a bad day. You could argue that Mo would just win no matter what, but wouldn’t it be more interesting if he swept 3 players from a single team instead of one at a time?
Ryley being the one to face Mo feels like a let down especially how easy it was for Mo to beat him, there's absolutely no excitement whatsoever, everyone already knows Mo would win. Lciop and Lucas could've made the final more exciting
I decided to leave CR because of their greed. It took me a long time to upgrade my cards to level 13, only for them to introduce levels 14 and 15, which are extremely costly. On top of that, they kept adding more cards, along with excessive rages and evolutions, making the game too complicated for me to keep up with.
At the end of the day, I get why CRL switched to a solo league but it just was not the right play, and the league only continues to get worse and worse each year. I'd love to see teams come back in the future but it doesn't seem likely
I still remember watching Javi14 almost single-handedly take down Nova Esports or Morten pulling off an incredible reverse sweep against Team Liquid, only to lose to Surgical Goblin by a single HP. And who could forget Mortal's unstoppable Golem? However, when they transitioned to solo CRL, I lost interest. It became much harder to follow the progress and keep up with the scene. On top of that, the game itself became increasingly pay-to-win and frustratingly unbalanced, which pushed me further away from the Clash Royale community.
I downloaded clash royale the day it came out. I deleted the game about a year ago due to overpowered evolutions that put you at a big disadvantage if you were free to play.
When they made a move to make more money the game declined. I don't know why people can't get it through their heads that these short term gains are going to kill long term enjoyment. Evolution, Champions and elite cards have made the game uncompetitive, but the bad thing is the tourney modes are only level 11. Take the caps off for these big tourneys. I get why 2v2 is gone because pros didn't want to dedicate time to practice plus practice 1v1, but teams can carry 2v2 specific players. Make a 2v2 ladder and go back to the 2v2, king of the hill and 1v1 tourney with teams.
please Mr Ash what is the title of the video where you were talking about Lord Zheng's deck, and you mentioned having a lot of respect for this player I have been a subscriber for 5 years
Por fin alguien que se preocupa x los fans and "casual" players que sueñan con el CR-profesionalismo. ¡Grande Ash! Ojalá someone listen to you, thank you.
I used to love CR, the tourney and its community. learning the meta, etc etc... used to aim to be a CR pro player, but maaan... now? full stop all of that since 2022
For me, teams seemed weird, because clash Royale is generally an individual game. So I never got into it at the time. But maybe I missed out on something.
No one is saying this but one of the reason its also declining is because they don't put more effort/money into it. 2017 winner won 250k, 2024 200k? How does that make any sense? Its a 50k regression in 7 years while most esport games have like tripled, quadrupled the budget since they started. Also the stage and fire effects in 2017 are way cooler than what you have in 2024. In 2017 it seemed people were really passionate compared to now where they're just trying to keep it alive, not trying to make progress on it or evolve it. Edit : well he mentionned the price in the video
biggest problem is the game itself, i think it's too late for clash royale, the game is at a point where it feel like the old players are leaving cuz of supercell greed and not listening to the community and new players are not coming in cuz of better options. Majority of games die after 10 years unless the developers are really capable, sadly cr devs are not, sad to see it fade away but even playing the game these days feels frustrating, why are nerfs/bugfixes so slow when it's obvious some cards need to get in check. Someone lost a game in the cr world finals due to a cannon cart bug. Coming from someone that watched A LOT of league of legends competitive games this should never happen, and even in the rare occasions that it does the game is played again. How the f did they not nerf goblinstein before the world finals, do you think people enjoy seeing the same card/deck every game? They just don't give an f, it's sad but everyone needs to accept it
Tbh I used to grind this game every day, spent a good bit of money back then for a high school student too, but one of the things that really turned me off the game was the miner nerf. It was crazy how they would completely ignore community opinion like that and kill an entire archetype that millions of players had spent years mastering. Their mentality on balancing is so awful, they feel the need to nerf anything with a high use rate completely ignoring whats actually balanced.
the 1st clashcon in 2016 was a invite for everyone around the world to go to helsinki:) i didnt have the cash to travel or i would of went to play my 3m ebarb decks i created vs jason hog giant deck:)
You're incredibly missing a big part of Cr's downfall: the extreme monetization and the addiction of broken cards (constantly being nerfed because they're too strong, like champions), broken tower troops and level 15. Throughout the years they nerfed the majestries, they nerfed the pass royale and they tripled the price, the offers' prizes are so much and they're insane. The progression sucks, look at the Goblin Queen or other ladder rewards, they don't give you nothing. Brad exposed this topic better than me.
Yho now Vulkan is a name i havent heard in a loong time, i wonder how hes doing, because from you Ash and Surg, hes the only one i havent heard of lately.
I personally like the solo play better than the team play, as the game is mostly a solo game. I'm not sure why you concluded that it was the change from team play to solo play that caused the decline in interest in the esport competitions. There are other reasons that could cause it, such as for example, the overall decline in interest in Clash Royale by players of the game or how the competitions are run / organized in an amateur way. That was on full demonstration in this year's competition with the commentator announcing Mohamed Light the winner way too early, and the celebrations that were consequently started off after that when clearly Ryley still had a chance to win.
Imo the point at 21:00 is a really bad one. The problem with clash royale was that it evolves TOO much and TOO fast to be a competitive esport. It becomes less about who's actually the best and more about who can adapt the quickest to any variety of sweeping changes. Three of the biggest esports of all time, CSGO, league of legends, and dota 2 all have very minor changes. League and dota have balance changes like the old clash royale which change up the meta but fundamentally the game is always the same. CSGO has stayed almost exactly the same forever with the exception of swapping out maps. It seems like this fast paced constantly evolving style is what kills esports, for example fortnite and overwatch both died off due to this although they were some of the biggest games and esports in the world at one point.
I feel like teams around 2019 was the peak of CR esports. I went to watch Worlds in person this year and the experience was amazing, but just 8 players solo simply doesn't hit the same.

Amazing video Ash, I really enjoyed it! I think it would be cool if you included gameplay footage from the tournaments when talking about them
I miss those days
Hey Ash! This was an extraordinary video. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and memories. Hope you doing great. Greetings from Mexico.
I downloaded clash royale the day it came out. I deleted the game about a year ago due to overpowered evolutions that put you at a big disadvantage if you were free to play.
2020 WORLD FINALs was DIFFERENT 😢❤
Getting rid of teams killed the Esports.
If 5 player teams is to much, then bring it to just 2. This will add 2v2, while also incrising players from 8 to 16
Men really miss team format bro, hope supercell make crl world format team again
Solid video. Why not have solo and team crl?
Having regular interviews with top players is a no brainer
please Mr Ash what is the title of the video where you were talking about Lord Zheng's deck, and you mentioned having a lot of respect for this player I have been a subscriber for 5 years
Por fin alguien que se preocupa x los fans and "casual" players que sueñan con el CR-profesionalismo.
I still miss Jason deck that won it all
I watched broodwar SSL type stuff, and team based leagues are just cooler, and more akin to real sports.
Solo tournaments are like home run derby.
We miss ur videos Ash ♥️
U were always my favourite youtuber.
Please back ♥️
bring back team based format
the 1st clashcon in 2016 was a invite for everyone around the world to go to helsinki:) i didnt have the cash to travel or i would of went to play my 3m ebarb decks i created vs jason hog giant deck:)
I just really miss 2v2 play. Also only 8 players is a bit weak
The Sunny V2 of CR. Miss the old community, and old videos man
I remember playing against surgical goblin in one of clash on gan's 1000 man tournaments. I lost because i misclicked.
Out of all moments he could have used, he chose to show the show the clip of Joker missing an open goal 😂
Hey Ash. Did you get any of the exclusive emotes to give away. I have all but 4 emotes and really want to collect every emote i possibly can.
Ash is still bummed that Supercell dropped Da as a caster..
Also what's the difference between worlds and the monthly competition
Nah its over for CR. Amazing video Man
Kingscup II was my fav
CR esports is not dead
How far have you gotten on ladder and path of legends?
@ ultimate champion
What they should do is simple. Have both teams and individual.
Hi, Tim! I hope that you are doing well! I love your content so much, Tim! Keep it up!:)
I have been playing since 2016 I enjoy 😊
Where's chief pat gone? Why he is not posting any videos?
