    Props to Matthew for having the most accurate eating report - he reported eating 3k calories a day but was consuming 3.5k. That's way better than most participants who are often off by factors of 2 or 3.

      Yeah, because she starves herself all the time. It’s so easy to get on that train of starving yourself and then binging.
      It’s not even really about control. Your brain literally subconsciously works to hyper focus you on calorie dense foods when you don’t eat regularly. If she ate ballanced meals several times a day, it’d be a lot easier for her to avoid the binging

      Have you heard of intermittent fasting?
      1 or 2 large meals a day then fast till the next meal
      It works by keeping your insulin levels low (low insulin = ability to metabolise stored fat)
      Sounds like what you've discovered!
      An easy way is to pick a place you'll eat your meals (eg: the dining room table)
      Then dont eat anywhere else.
      (so not in the kitchen, not in the car, not in the living room, etcetera, etcetera)
      (Avoid calorific or artificially drinks between meals too)
      If your having 1 meal a day then there'll be just 7 seperate times you sit down and eat each week. (14 if 2 meals a day)
      Compared to possibility of well over a dozen in a single day when mindlessly grazing!

    • @TangledGreenMoss
      @TangledGreenMoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@maryburger1232 that'll be a hormone imbalance if your overweight or a lack of body fat (stored/accessible fuel) if your not.
      You have 2 fuel sources;
      Sugar
      Fat
      Sugar lasts a short while and as your blood sugar drops (hours after a meal) your body will release more Ghrelin (hunger hormone) as it wants you to refill with easily accessible fuel, aka sugars.
      Allowing insulin to drop and ignoring initial hunger pangs (because hunger is normal) will allow your body the chance to acess its fat stores and begin to metabolise them into fuel.

      Feasting & Fasting IS a good way to live and a far more natural way to live than 3 meals or 3 meals AND snacks in between!
      1 or 2 large varied all natural meals per day, eaten till satisfied but not stuffed & fasting before, between & after those large meals.
      (1 or 2 every other day if severly overweight or insulin resistant)

    • @harkerx9029
      @harkerx9029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      @@TangledGreenMoss I agree that intermittent fasting *can* be a very good way to go, but it does have to come from a healthy mindset or it will be tied to guilt and disorded views on food. For some people, three meals a day keeps their blood sugar and energy on an even keel, and thats fine too

    • @TangledGreenMoss
      @TangledGreenMoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@harkerx9029 true but living by blood sugar is a sign of being sugar dependent.
      Your body has 2 fuel sources, sugar or fat.
      Sugar stores last around 12 hours with no food intaken
      Fat can last a lean person around 20 days with no food intaken
      High blood sugar = high insulin and low Glucagon
      Low blood sugar = high Glucagon and low insulin
      They are opposing hormones.
      Insulin tells your body to store energy.
      Glucagon tells your body to release stored energy.
      So low blood sugar whilst utilising stored fat (fat adapted) is a very good thing for fat loss

    • @harkerx9029
      @harkerx9029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@TangledGreenMoss insulin only becomes a problem if you become insulin resistant or develop diabetes, otherwise its your body doing its natural thing. Not everyone loses weight on keto, and some people are so convinced they should avoid all carbs they won't even touch fruit and vegetables and end up with deficiencies and not enough fibre. Meanwhile lots of people lose fat just fine while still eating carbs, so yeah, I still think there is no one size fits all and intermittent fasting can be very detrimental to people who are approaching weight loss from a bad place emotionally.

      Not always true. Though since being stuck inside I am eating 3 meals a day and I have put 5lbs on even with my hours exercise and the zumba ive been doing at home.

      It depends on how dedicated a person is. In January this year I was doing intermittent fasting so I had 1-3 days without food, some days I had 2 meals, some I had one meal. All meals cooked from scratch at home. I lost 7 kg in 3 weeks. I was not eating junk. Now, I don't go that many hrs without eating but I have limited nr of hrs for eating. My eating window is 12-20 so my breakfast is at 12. I am still losing weight but not much, but I'm a normal weight, normal BMI. It would work much better for obese people.

    I think they UNDER-estimate the calories the people take in. His drinking alone at the party from just what they showed is easily 1,000 calories and no telling how much he actually had. I've seen other shows where they seem way off on the amounts too and seems way lower than it should be. Probably because they would have a heart attack if they heard the real amount. His workouts must be helping a little because the amount he's taking in is the same amount on other shows where people are morbidly obese. Her girls are seeing her behavior and could easily pick it up. That's how I started with my issues...watching an aunt and grandma always dieting and talking about weight.

On an aside, as a longtime cyclist and runner who's been around a lot of cyclists and runners, I know it's easy, easy, easy for people with active lifestyles to way overestimate the calorie burn. I've renewed my fastidiousness about tracking everything I eat and all my organized exercise. I didn't weigh myself for about six weeks into it, just to avoid the discouragement. I had a lot of post-depression static weight. I started weighing in three weeks ago. At the rate I'm losing weight now, about 3.5 pounds a week, I've lost somewhere around 25-30 pounds. Goodness can I feel a huge difference.

    The "starvation mode" myth is such total BS. I've heard that excuse from morbidly obese people who would eat multiple Taco Bell party packs for dinner per person on a regular basis. If eating too little makes you fat, why are the Brits and Americans leading in obesity and not the entire continent of Africa? And how could it explain what we see in every episode of Super Size vs Super Skinny?

    • @jesster1111
      @jesster1111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It’s not a myth. If you starve your body, your metabolism slows. Full stop. However, if you consistently starve your body enough, yes, you can be thin, because your body will start eating itself to survive. No one is saying eating too little universally makes you fat, but someone like Emma is self-sabotaging. She’s messing with her metabolism by starving herself during the week, which fuels binges on the weekends, and her starved body will cling desperately to every calorie she consumes.

      No, your metabolism can't just magically "slow down"*, because what is generally called "your metabolism" is all the functions that keep you alive. There's not a lot of room to "slow down".
      What CAN happen if you do a lot of fad diets is that you'll lose muscle mass as well as fat and, when returning to your old eating habits, regain less muscle than fat, but even that only goes so far.
      Also, smaller people just need to use less calories to function, but if you're eating too much overall you don't need to worry about that (you may need to worry about the potential health effects of being obese, though)
      Other than that, the only time your metabolism will "slow down" is when you are literally starving.
      Note: Starving.
      Not "Not eating breakfast"
      Not "Eating less some days than others.
      Literally starving.
      As in, not taking in enough food over a long period of time to the point where your body doesn't have enough calories to sustain itself.
      And the reason for that is that nonvital things like, say, producing warmth and later on even vital functions (hence why very underweight people can get heart attacks and organ failure), and making people unwilling to move because there's not some magical use of energy that the body can just NOT do when it doesn't feel like it, all the energy you use is used for important things.
      *In parentheses because the idea is just so, SO misguided.

    • @so._.anyways
      @so._.anyways 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@teaartist6455 THIS!!! your metabolism slows down when you are physically starving yourself because your hormone production practically shuts down. I’m a survivor of anorexia (2 relapses) and I almost died in my sleep in 2017. The doctor said I had just a few days if I didn’t decide to go the ER. Yes I ate, but I burned every calorie that went into my body. Every single one. My body was “eating itself” (muscle once fat was too low), and my body went into fight or flight. I actually couldn’t keep weight on anymore. It took me four years to even get back to a healthy weight. I also didn’t have my period for a long time and my hormones went absolutely insane.
      These people that claim “starvation mode” think our bodies are like machines. We are much more complex than a few numbers or some theory. We’re always finding out more about the human body.

      Starvation mode is when your body keeps you from losing weight to prevent starvation when you are in a long-term strict diet, basically it slows down metabolism and/or ruins it. It's not a myth.

    • @glowrillaz
      @glowrillaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Jessica Beca actually it is. if you eat so few your body doesn’t get as much energy and thus slows you down on moving thats why you lose less.. not because your metabolism “broke”. there’s no such thing as a broken metabolism at least there’s no scientific evidence on it (each article/research has another opposed article). Also, what happens is that when you lose weight you start to need less calories and thus burn less and thus find it hard to lose more but gain quickly, which is completely natural.
      The difference between a slow and fast metabolism isn’t yet clear but a lot of doctors and physicians suspect that it’s very minor.
      Personally, i think if you’re treating your body nicely by leading a healthy and active life, your body will treat itself better and control its weight better, people call it fast metabolism but its just being healthy (eating, exercise, supplements, happiness, and good sleep)

      I'm going to guess heavy cardio like doing the treadmill with high incline. I can easily burn 450 in an hour that way without really breaking a sweat

      He is heavier so will burn more calories per hour. I can do cardio for an hour and only burn 300-400 because I weigh a lot less.

      He's a big guy. The more you weight, the more you burn during exercise. That's why at my normal weight of 120-125 lbs (pregnant now so I'm heavier) I'll only burn an average of 200 per half hour, but he would burn much more. Lucky guy 😂
