What did you think of this return to the 'How to Become an Animator' Series? :) Did you watch the whole thing? Also comment what types of content, and what videos you want to see from me in 2021!! :D

I found your channel by searching "How to become an Animator" when only the first few episodes were out! I have loved watching this channel and community grow so much over these years. For content related stuff, I always love watching your interview videos! I would be interested in watching your vlog content, but I feel like that is a different type of subscriber than what is currently on this channel. I would hate to see you lose subscribers for following something you enjoy. Also, I know you made a tech suggestion video last year that was really helpful, but if there's any other stuff you would suggest now I would like to see that. Asking a poll question with the different things you want to do on the community tab might be helpful in seeing what people want to see next. (I'm not sure how that works from a TH-camr's perspective or how it will preform, though.) I enjoyed watching this video and I wish you the best of luck in 2021!

I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, but it's something that I would personally be interested in watching! I noticed that VFX tiktoks are taking off recently until I thought it would be a cool idea if you were to make a few, While at the same time , Documenting your progress? Starting from idea, to storyboards (if that's a thing in VFX) to acting and then bringing that into whatever program you would prefer to use when accomplishing the VFX like a "Bring me through a tutorial and teach me how to do this" Kinda deal, I think it would be really cool if you did something like this and made it so you were vlogging, and kind of acting at the same time, acting as if you're teaching someone in person but really you're just talking to the camera, I'm not sure if that makes sense or not LOL

i seriously would love to see some more tech material from you, also i want to see more of your process of learning blender, as well as content just like this video where your just talking to the audience or vlogs as you said in the video. also if you have experience in some vfx pipelines id love to hear about such material as well. something i would like to say is well you should do what you enjoy as well. "don't have permission" if you treat this like a people pleaser you may burn yourself out very quickly. i did watch it all the way through, though its something i had on in the background while i was working on a project. and well i would say i was lead to your content early on by my viewing of animation mentor and well seeing your interview, then stemmed from their by watching your channel. on a side note id love to see live streams of you working on your own projects whether that be animation or well since you say your a techy system builds, also since you say you enjoy gaming it would be nice to see you do such livestreams as well.

Totally agree. I want to hear the thought process of an animator as they adjust the animation's timing/poses, and really what to use from a reference and what not to use and what part of the pose to exaggerate, what do you sacrifice for fluidity. Lip syncing and long hair animation especially, seems like difficult subjects.

This was such a refreshing video. I loved how you talked about the experience working in a studio and how much creative energy there is around you. Definitely do more of these casual, just chatting videos. So chill, loved it. As for what I would request for future videos (along with more like this one), I would say more video game animation analysis, maybe more workflow/setup tips to animate as smoothly as possible, maybe a super short demo on how to cross that dreaded blocked to spline point, etc. You make amazing content as it is though, keep it up.

I just subscribed not too long ago actually -- probably within the past couple months -- and am actually currently applying to the 3D animation program at my university, so your help is definitely appreciated from me! Personally, I really like your very up-front and candid approach to TH-cam -- it certainly feels like you care about and want to make a connection with us!
Something which may help regarding deciding what videos to make and figuring out whether people would watch them is to -- perhaps at the end or beginning of each video -- give a list of ideas which you feel like you're comfortable making the next video on, and have the comments essentially vote on what they'd like to see. That way, you get to curate the list to what you'd like to make, and you get to find out which of the options we'd like to see! You could also request ideas for future videos from the comments as well to find if there's something we'd like to see that you haven't thought of. This idea actually comes from The Spiffing Brit, so if you want to see it in action you can check the end of a few of his videos.
As a part of it, if there are options that would require more time to make than others, you could include that too -- either tell us how much time relative to each other they'd require (most time, least time, etc.), or give a ballpark estimate for how many days they'd take to make (probably a range of days [3-5, 8-12, something like that] so that you're not boxed into a set deadline if something comes up). That way we know about when to expect the next video to show up AND you're not boxed into only making the content you can create in a half-week -- if we choose a video idea that'd take a week to produce, then we're the ones who chose it and we're okay with not having two videos that week!
Personally, I'd love to see tutorials on a forest scene or two, how to make convincing foliage that reacts to character movement and maybe even wind. Destruction tutorials would be cool to see too -- showing how to convincingly break an object (potentially, connecting to the previous idea, a branch or tree -- or maybe even multiple objects of different materials). I don't know if you have any experience with these or not, but if you do I'd certainly appreciate it!
Sorry for the wall of text, but thanks for the amazing content, and I'm looking forward to seeing what videos show up in the future! :)

Hey Wade! I'm a former animator (Big Idea, DPS, ReelFX) and animation TD (ReelFX), and wrote the tweenMachine tool you plugged in a tools video a while back (thanks!). My life and career have taken some interesting turns, to say the least. :) I found you through some of your Blender videos. I used Blender a little over 20 years ago, but at the time its character animation features were awful, so I didn't stick with it very long, though I've toyed with getting back into it lately. I haven't seen your earlier career videos, but even when you're just talking for 20 minutes, there's just a fun vibe to what you do, so I'll definitely be a regular viewer from now on. (Is the "Sir" part of "Sir Wade" explained in any of those earlier videos?)

    1. As a newbie to animation, I really enjoyed seeing your wife animate for the first time. It really alleviated a lot of the intimidation I had towards playing around with a rig. She made it seem fun and like no big deal and that gave me the confidence to try a rig on my own! I had previously not touched rigs bc I thought I had to be at a certain level to even open one up.
    2. I came to your channel because I was looking into an animation school online and you were in an interview talking about animation mentor and you mentioned your TH-cam channel.

I found this channel becuase I watched a movie from DreamWorks and was like: "How did they make that?". Watched a few videos from you and immediately started to binge watch your how to become an animator series. Since then (about 3 months ago) Ive probably spent like 250 hours in maya trying to make stuff. As to what I would like to see: I know this is a VERY specific question but I cant figure out how to use the Software denoiser from Arnold and the layers and AOVs confuse me. So a video about rendering and compositing image sequences would be greatly appreciated!

I came to this channel by your first blender video, and I stuck around thinking I would learn how to animate in blender, I thought this guy's a professional, how much time he will take to learn blender and then teach me, because, I just wanted to learn animation in blender, but that didn’t happened, I had blender vs Maya thing in my mind, I literally didn’t knew anything about animation, BUT, then I watched your other videos, and learned about twitch to watch you, from the last 8 months of following you, you have taught me so much about animations, and studios. Now I know, how the animation movies are actually made, you taught me softwares are just tools and you have to use right one at the right time, now I know how to learn things I want, you have laid a path for me to follow, and not just in animations and all, but in other aspects of life also, and that’s the reason why I have stuck around till now, and I am not leaving ever. In my list of 200+ subscribed TH-cam channels, your channel is the only single one for which I have turned on all notifications, so that I can join the “first hour viewers gang”, not bootlicking, so yeah, a serious huge * THANK YOU* for all the knowledge you shared and things you taught me, _you really are great teacher_ .
For the question: what we want see on the channel
blender animation and stuff, just kidding, 😛😛
but one thing I would like to request is, more videos like “Bringing Animated Characters into Live Action Photos” using Blender, since you will be doing a video on rendering maya animations in blender, so why not mix both.
Since you were sharing your personal thoughts, I also shared mine here.😊😊
Also, if I am getting a call tomorrow from “Sir Wade Animations Studios” to work for them, my answer is * YESSSSSSS* . ✌

I like the content you have been posting, but if you want to know... Maybe a full film pipeline video, not super in detail but for example, is the process
Idea > Concepting > Storyboarding > Sculpting/Modelling (in conjunction with Rigging and animation if using a base mesh) Texturing > Set dressing > Bringing it all together> Lighting > Special/Visual Effects > Compositing? I feel like this is a missed opportunity for some people that have been in the industry.

I’m a big advocate for doing what you want, so if there are particular videos or original animated shorts you want to create then the sky’s the limit. As far as videos for the audience, I believe it’s a good idea to do that too, so as you just did by asking and see what the people say. I’m new to animation myself, so I consume tutorials, interviews, original animations by a good amount of animation you tubers. Understandably to do video production and such is a full time job so the struggle is real for prioritizing what to make. I guess to summarize, to a bit of both of exactly what you want and what the people want. Even if particular videos don’t perform a certain way, a video was still made and it has plenty of time to do it’s thing. Either way how you decide to proceed with your channel, I’m sure it will work out as you seem to know what your doing. Keep up the good work.

I've worked in the games industry for a bit doing sprites, animation, illustration. But my first love is still animated films like the ones Dreamworks/Pixar/Disney made, and I love it when you do the breakdown of animation decisions of films because they give so much insight what animators are thinking, and it's something even my art teachers never taught me. The one you did for Onward is pretty good and that's why I subbed! (I didn't find other animation channels doing it...)

Honestly, when people make videos they want to make, the enthusiasm of what they actually talk about is really captivating and the kind of thing I really enjoy seeing, like when you were really excited about the forky rig recently, loved just how excited you were about it. Also, I'm sure you're aware of Corridor Crew, but they have an 'Animators react' doing like a twitch stream or something where you just talk over your favourite film or just clips you really enjoyed or where inspired by when you were younger would be really lovely to watch.

I actually came across your channel from a Facebook page. I've dove into 3d creation since high school, but I learned first hand through TH-cam tutorials for over 10 years. I even made a tutorial from my experience from the Blender tutorials I've watched and the files I've downloaded. Kind of like Braniac minus the planet destroying tendecies. As a matter of fact, I'm in the process of remaking that one video 1 more time and I am also on the verge of making another tutorial for the effect from a 1985 sci-fi movie. But the biggest tutorial series that I'm working on now is progressing and I'm almost done with it!
Looking back, I would love to get into a school to learn the tricks of the trade properly, but that 6 figure price tag is just not possible. For now, learning from videos and being self taught are the only paths I can travel. Anyway, enough about me in that section. I hope to post the results of my findings in the future.

Hey Sir Wade, I've been watching your content since I was in College and now I've been animating professionally for 7 years. The content which I have personally enjoyed the most and gained from are the tutorials by yourself and the interviews of other animators too. I constantly want to improve my skills and every bit of insight to another animators process I find is a great learning experience. I see a lot of professional tips on polish which is amazing and always looks beautiful but I would even like to see the process of animating a walk into sitting down or turning around and walking backwards as the character interacts with the person behind them. As a student I struggled to take a walk cycle out of its "cycle" and implement it into the rest of the animation, I didn't know if professionals even used walk cycles to block their shot out or if it was more of just an excercise or for games where the looping is necessary.
Anyway everything you're doing is great and I usually find myself learning something whether it be a small tip/trick or a cool function on animBot which I havn't tried before or a golden nugget which has changed my workflow and greatly improved the way I animate. Thanks for the videos!

Well, I couldn't tell you how long I've been following your channel, but I'm not even big into the animating side of the field. I'm a character artist focusing on game art, and I'm able to bring that character through the pipeline. I typically skip animating by retargeting ready made animations onto my characters. I enjoy your content as you dive into areas that I'm not familiar with, that way I have a better understanding of how different industries work.
Personally, I'd love more game animation tutorials of some sort. Hopefully I'd find enough inspiration to try it out for myself and make my own animations for the characters I create.
Thanks for doing what you do!

So I've followed this channel for about a year and half. I'm a senior in college, majoring in animation. Just like a lot of people I came to this channel because I'm learning to animate in Maya. And you have created the how to animate series and all that, but I think one of the things that would make this channel more user friendly and honestly in my opinion more useful, would be more in-depth videos. For example, you made a video going over some of the things you can do with Mash in Maya. And directly after that I really wanted to take a deep dive into how to use mash for modeling, how to use mash for animating, essentially how to use the tool at a professional level. But you didn't make any follow up videos about it. Mash plays different than a lot of the things in Maya so knowing it's there and that it can be used for a lot of things is great, but then what? There isn't a lot of useful content on how to use it. I find videos on how to add things to surfaces with mash, but I don't find any good videos on how each and every part of it works, or the best way to incorporate it into my workflow. That's just one example, I know that's a long explanation but the reality is that a lot of people come to channels like this because you are so likeable and you know the program so well. I would love to see more videos like Ducky3D. He not only teaches the content and shows you what you can do with it, but he also shows how to use each part of the program to its fullest extent. I agree there isn't a lot of useful educational content on TH-cam for Maya, but I absolutely think this channel could be used as one of the best learning tools for Maya. Same thing with cameras and a few other things in Maya, its your bread and butter and you have taught it for a ling time. Why not create a series of videos on how to use each tool to its fullest extent. 2 or 3 videos on how to use mash and going over exactly how it works, 2 or 3 videos on how to properly use cameras in a scene. 2 or 3 videos going over the entire workflow in Maya, from basic idea, to finished animated product, using all these tools. Because I feel that you know how to use all these tools so well that you can show the workflow and and teach them in a way that really pushes people to the next level.

I’ve followed you for at least 2 years. But recently stopped watching due to my own struggles with animation. After years of attempting to get into the industry, I failed. And have spent the last 2 years struggling with giving up all together or deciding in which way to direct my creative energy.
Having only one sole purpose leaves you lost when you come to terms with it not becoming reality.
I’ve decided to pursue storyboarding for animation as I’ve always had a natural talent for drawing and my true struggles started (and never stopped really) when I transitioned to CG.
Haha 😅 IDK if anything in my story gives you idea for future content, but I thought sharing might help!
PS. I’m always intrigued with how technology can improve our productivity and workflows. For tablets, to new computers and productivity apps and accessories. So there may be some content there! All the best!

What is it like to work remotely? How will the pandemic change the studios moving forward? More importantly how would the artists like to see the studios handle the desire to work from home?

Hey Sir Wade, would love to see you talking to more industry professionals, I would like to see an interview with a normal Lighter at Pixar, or a Compositor at Weta, or an Animator at Disney. They don't have to have big names (in fact I think it would be better if they were just normal people), but it would be great to hear their stories, experiences, and reviews of their time in the industry.
This way people can learn some of the differences of working in VFX, or Feature, or TV, or Video Games, let's talk to the artists!

Seems like a lot of us animators tend to put Animation on a Pedestal, but once you're in the industry reality hits as being another job. Ultimately its a personal goal, seems like once its achieved people want to find new goals whether it be changing careers, trying out new things etc. Best of luck to everyone! Awesome video

Random thought: deeper dives into narrower aspects like shaders and texturing or rigging, or particle systems. There are lots of tutorials that you can follow but less that talk about what’s going on and why things work. Big difference between following a tutorial and understanding enough to deviate from a tutorial and do new stuff. Also like the idea of a broader overview of the various software beyond maya or blender.

Just found your channel a few days ago. I work in action sports as a digital designer in graphic design + photography. I’ve always love bts of any of the Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks and ILM. I was watching the bts of frozen II and got even more curious about animation and how to do it. I went to the Art Institute but for graphics many years ago. Now I want to learn animation as a fun hobby with potential for career advancement. I really just want to work on animation to be able to show my kids something that I really worked on. I’ve always be in wonder about it and now I think it’s time to dive into learning about it. I live in Southern California so I’m in the right place to be. Love the channel and advise.

I found the channel because I was curious about a Maya user's outlook on Blender as it evolves.
Make what you wanna make. As long as it's 3D modeling program/animating program agnostic, or can work for both/is translated for both, I'm happy, 'cause I get to see comparisons, which later helps me make more informed decisions and inform others.
I dunno, seeing somebody else's outlooks on these things can be interesting.

I found your videos on how to become an animator a few weeks ago and it was exactly what I needed to hear!
I recently just started studying 2D animation and of course I'm not yet sure where it'll take me, but I'm wondering if you could speak a little about transitioning from 2D to 3D ( or maybe you have a video about it I haven't seen ). Also I'm currently living in LA but planning to move to Austin and I would love to hear more about Austin 🙏🙏 about what's better over there or worse, or the things you think are important to know. I love listening to your experience in general so the more the better 🤩

create exactly what you want to create, there will be an audience for it no matter what. it may be a new audience, but hey, an audience. people will find it interesting because you find it interesting. there's proof there's an audience for it because you yourself want to make it... so odds are someone else is interested in it too! hopefully this makes sense lol. personally i really enjoy your interviews! i hope to see more of that if that's what you want to create.
i agree with the animator from dreamworks who went to london- i'm a 3d animator in preschool television and it was my DREAM to work in animation. but in the end, yeah it's a job haha. i'm much more interested in what i create after work- like my channel i'm starting. maybe going back to a studio may help you remember why you started youtube?? just a thought anyway- keep doing you!

Videos on workflow for blocking, blocking plus, splining, and polish. I’m in advanced animation right now and got dropped into Maya this semester with no experience in it. My intro class didn’t use Maya and I’m trying to figure out all of these processes and how they integrate together to make something that looks decent. I’m certain I’m not the only person who isn’t sure where to start with blocking and how to transition to splining and then which things to save for polishing.

As for what content I'd personally like to see more of (I mean, keep doing you, it's great, but since you asked): I'd love more condensed videos on specific topics, preferably "software agnostic" animation advice. Anything from run/walk cycles to body language and expressions, maybe camera work etc etc. I'm more interested in game specific animation, but I don't at all mind the topics more directed towards feature film either.
Either way, keep it up, and thanks for everything! :)

I'm really struggling with the visemes for regular lip sync. Some people do 22 visemes, others 8, others 10... It's hard to find an average "consolidation" of all the visemes that need to be done for a talking character. The principles of each phoneme and how they pull the muscles of the face without going into exaggeration territory. I even try to search "viseme chart reference" and I get very few entries and most doesn't resemble to each other, as if different mouths moved differently depending of the artist (not language because the same sounds move the mouth and facial muscles the same across all languages). I would like to hear your experience and insight about this topic and hopefully show a full chart of average visemes that can work for most phonemes from your point of view.

And others videos like this one or the interviews or things more inclined on your preferences. Hugs from latin America ;)

What I like about your content is that you actually don't make tutorials here like "we will learn how to do this.. press this button, type this, draw that..." Actually I personally may not be part of your targeted audience because I am not very interested in learning maya/blender techniques or even becoming a full time animator. You do take different aspects of the 3D industry and animation and give us YOUR personal view about it as a whole, you are a great communicator so the way you present it is very entertaining despite the theme you are talking about. That's what I like the most. I usually watch your videos while working so the fact that I am learning new things without the need to be following each second what you're doing is very comforting. The only thing I would like you to talk about, if you accept requests, is how to approach animation from a non-studio based project. Taking youtube animation channels for example, where you must finish a 3 minute animation in 4-5 days and make it look decent. What can we keep and what can we sacrifice from all the principles and techniques in order to meet such short deadlines. Keep up the good work!

I dont remember the exact video. But i was taking a Maya class at my commnity college 2 years ago late 2017. It was a evening class too n fun. The one thing i couldn't deal with was how to get good lighting on our projects we were doing and the project was creating a lazer gun that was able to shoot. Mind ya this was the year i got sick with the flu mega bad at the time out of nowere. lol
but your lighting video helped me pass that project before i had to drop the class at that time. I enjoyed your knoowledge and eneregy so much this was before i knew twitch was even a thing days so I subscribed to see more content n stuck around around ever since. Joined Twitch to support a friend i made who livestreamed on youtube back in 2018 than found you in 2019 not knowing twitch had a art section. :) So been around for awhile n glad to be part of this fun small animation family. i know i left like a long essey by the time i got done writing this which is making me crack up hard. i'll leave it at this.

    Firstly: Merry Christmas (in advance)
Secondly: you need to know I am a beginner
finally my question is how do you not get overwhelmed by the Maya user interface (does animation mentor teach why is the interface like having small icons and all, pls tell me!!!)
also if you join a studio (by any chance) plz plz plz plz… don't reduce the number of vids published and all, other then that it would be great you joining a studio (again )

    • @dragonblade3166

Im not Sir but i can help.
A large amount of the maya interface is just the same controls over and over.
For example the playblast button on the animation shelf is the same as the playblast in the playback tab.
In my (although limited) experience its a lot easier make sense of maya's interface through this lens

I can totally understand why it's just a job. Obviously, if you are doing animation, that means you have a huge passion for it. That said, constantly just animating what other people think up, or constantly doing contract jobs, is not exciting at all. Outside of the money, I have almost ZERO interest in working at a studio. Even if it is challenging, and you enjoy it, it is a stark difference from the work you do for yourself. I'm always far more into the projects or products I make and sell versus what someone wants to pay me to do.

Something I have heard from a lot of creators, and obviously, you know MUCH more than I do about this, is sometimes they just throw things they did out there and they just work. I've seen people like Markiplier do this a lot, and I believe his most viewed stuff is just the most random things. YOu mentioned a lot of stuff that you wanted to try, but are afraid might not work. Again, you know better, it's your channel, after all, you've got it to the place where it's at, however, my suggestion would be to try and just do those things, and if it doesn't work rework it. Somehow TH-cam has a space for everything.
