- For me there is a clear winner. What do you use to feed your mealworms?

I have been wondering this for some time! Great video. A slow down in the process. Heck no! Thanks for doing the test. This is why I love watching your content.
Wow this is interesting thanks for sharing with us🙂🤝
Great information, as always. Thank you, respect from Canada 🇨🇦
The wheat mids I get have larger chunks in it, making it harder to sift. Basically that same stuff you say yours arent eating. But I can no longer get wheat bran where I am because I dont order in large enough quantity.
We have been using wheat mids since November 2022 with great success. Our worms eat everything, BUT we also run everything through a commercial coffee grinder. For whatever reason once we started doing this they started eating everything.
We mix in a few other things, that is why we use the grinder.
That's interesting. Are you certain they are eating it, and it's not just mixed in with the frass? The frass from when they eat midds is much lighter than when they eat bran.
@MidwestMealworms we tested the grind sizes with the sifters to make sure it wasn't too fine before we started giving it to the worms and wasn't going through the 130 and wasting product.
When we sift with the 130 we have nothing but worms left in the sifters so assume they are eating it.
@@DomesticDinos very smart...I don't know if a way to efficiently grind the quantity of substrate I go through, but maybe I'll stumble across something.
Thank you for the feedback!
@MidwestMealworms we only go through about 50lbs a month so I can definitely see a big difference between our small time operation and something larger, but if you find something let us know and we will do the same! We can all grow together!
I think I recall reading that wheat germ is toxic to mealworms. Is that maybe the part that they are refusing to eat? I'm glad it apparently doesn't result in die-off and they just seem to eat around it, but it is frustrating from a sifting perspective. Thanks for sharing!
I haven't seen that, but could be. Self preservation in not eating it.
Im really looking forward to no more sifting headaches....
Thank you for the very informal video! It helped me decide which to get. I was using wheat mids, and definitely noticed it got moldy easy. I will be switching to wheat bran.
One question, do you cut out the bottom of your beetle drawers? If so, will the wheat bran get through the screen?
No, if you want to do the screen method put the screen/beetles on the substrate, not elevated above.
What about using the white flour as substrate for mealworms
I saw some farms and factories doing that
Give it a shot. Flour is usually dusty, and I'm not sure if it would be more prone to mold and heat retention.
Noooo! This means no Midwest Mealworms Chicken and Quail Feed.
Running a loofah vs watergel test soon? Worms may be too stupid, but my beetles and roaches have all been getting by fine on loofah bowls.
Saw an article about squeezing them producing enough electricity for an LED too so multifunctional I guess. Disco drink bowls.
Loofahs are drying now....
I'll be testing a water gel replacement option soon..... 👀
off the topic-are meal worms or super worms better to grow for chicken feed? considering how long it takes and nutritional value, I can not find much info about it. Do you have any info? Eva
I've raised both, I'd say mealworms because they are more forgiving and easier to raise. Supers are prone to mass die off, and take forever to get to size.
thank you! @@MidwestMealworms
Ever try wheat pollard?
No.
I can't get wheat bran in my area, but I have a bag of whole wheat, what would be the best way to grind them to bits?
Why does a dog have a bag of whole wheat and want to know about raising mealworms?
So many things don't add up here.
How many pounds are you needing to grind?
@@devinsmith2114 Yes I have a dog, not part of the problem and some chickens and I raise mealworms to feed them, my problem is how do I grind whole wheat to a consistent size for the worms without some being to big and other into powder?
@@MidwestMealworms Small amount I have about ten trays of worms , I try a blender but some are too big and there is a lot turned to powder if I grind till all are broken.
@Skippy641 You posted while I was typing. Just messing with you.
How many chickens and how much of their diet is it? My buddy feeds his almost nothing but mealworms and goes through too many to raise.
