My name is Justin, and I raise mealworms! I sell them live, along with mealworm frass (a great soil amendment). I am open and transparent about how I raise my insects, and use this forum to show you how I run my insect farm.

Winter Wonderland Solar Project Update: Progress Despite the Snow!
It's a winter wonderland outside, and the snow and ice have delayed progress on our solar panel roof installation.
Today, the team focused on electrical work inside, setting up the main electric box and junction connections.
My long-term goal includes a battery bank setup, possibly with an EV system for vehicle-to-grid integration.
Outside, we've made progress with new electric components, including an on/off switch for safety.
The ice and snow on the roof have taught me patience-safety comes first before rushing to
complete the project.

Tray Shower Setup for Mealworm Farming
มุมมอง 1322 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I set up a functional tray shower system to handle moisture and drainage to get dirty trays washed inside to avoid cold, snowy conditions outside. XPS boards act as a water spray barrier, and a non-slip mat to improve traction on the slippery concrete. Adjusted workflow with a bucket seat to minimize back strain while working on lower trays. Humidity levels were boosted naturally to counter the...

Mealworm Sifting Machine - Review after using it for a few months
Interesting. I want to look into solar to heat 7 Leopard Gecko enclosures.
I wish, that's my dream and retirement plan
As long it is profitable it is sustainable 😂
That's one way to look at it.
How's the expansion going for more wormies....🎣🤜💥🤛🎣
Physical building changes are done. The last piece, using mesh tray inserts, is being tested now.
Use to Breed mealworms till I got a really bad mite infestation.
Mites suck!
You could easily parley the used-substrate into a red worm farm.
The used substrate here is full of eggs and will be eaten as the larvae hatch and grow.
I tried this when i had multiple lizards. I did okayish with the mealies but never could get the superworms to reproduce.
I really struggled with supers as well. Much harder to keep the baby larvae alive, and they are soooo prone to disease and complete die off. They are tough to raise.
Weather striping could work. It’s just foam with a sticky side. You stick it to the wall and it acts as a gasket to seal. With it not locking on the bottom, I feel you can only do so much though. Good luck
15 pound bag goes for 115$ there money in that for sure
That sounds like dried mealworms....I can't produce them in the US and be competitive with imported prices, so I only sell live.
Maybe if it were recessed, it would seal better
Ooooo, then it could have overlapping parts on the edges maybe? Will think about that one, thank you!
@MidwestMealworms assuming you put a lip all the way around on tue backside
Preheat your incoming air.
How?
@MidwestMealworms How indeed? Maybe throw on a kerosene space heater inside the room or space fresh air is drawn from? An electric heater? Wood stove? Heck, I built a LP rocket mass heater inside my bedroom so I could have a radiant heat source without an active flame or fan blowing. Surely your application can't be that much different. Email me some pictures and I'll put my Mensa+ IQ to work on it.🙃
Dudes will see this and go hell yeah a million mealworms
Ha!
Yep
This blows my mind and im wondering why 😂
Ew
Nah, it's awesome!
What do you feed your baskets they are too manyyy
This worked great but now I need to find cheaper feed for a million meal worms!
I use wheat bran and water gel crystals, it is working well.
@@MidwestMealworms he was joking
😂… I can’t believe somebody actually asked you that question
It happens from time to time ;)
@@MidwestMealworms🤦♀️
I'm hot on your heels raising my own wiggly morsels for my hens, but wait . . . This is getting serious. Might I be better off BUYING mealworms from you and spending my time doing something more productive, like sunbathing? How about a video showcasing your mealworm products? Yes, maybe a big dry-erase board listing quantity & price. Please? 😊
That's a great suggestion. I'm a terrible salesman, I honestly feel cringy trying to sell my product....something to work on. A board with products and prices to easily reference during a video would be a great addition, thank you!
@@MidwestMealworms You're welcome. Fingers 🤞.
how do you maintain the temperature? Are you using space heater?
Standard "home" style HVAC system, full electric right now.
@@MidwestMealworms Thanks for responding, Isn't that costy? May I ask you about a monthly cost approximation for the electricity consumed for maintaining the mealworm building temperature
No camecals just water?
Yep, just water.
Very satisfactory, I could leave this video running for a few hours 😂😂
Anxious to see the results, I also had this doubt in my breeding but I didn't test it... So intuitively I'm discarding those that pass the sieve. Like a genetic selection...
Yup, I may end up doing that as well if they take a long time to grow.
Sand😂😂
I'm interested in mealworms, so I watch them often. Thank you for the good information.
this trash makes me vomit. leave it for Elon, Bill, Jeff, Ursula, Xi, Charles, etc to eat
How many mealworms would you keep in this size container?
A couple thousand at full size, double at baby/micro sizes.
Gettin' old.😂 I'm 76. You ain't seen nuthin' yet, sonny!
I hope I get there someday 😂🤝
@MidwestMealworms U will.
Congrats What conditions are necessary to raise this worms?
I keep them at 80F and 50% humidity.
Is mealworm breeding your while job or do you have another job? I think I asked that on another video but I forgot on which. I wish I could work on an insect farm but here in Germany it's very rare
This is my full time job.
Mush it up add the water and adjust to how much food they will need to dry out the mix using testing a good ratio is 68% at 22kg of food total
Ty
Im super interested that the quality of the separation of sizes has improved using the machine compared with the previous sifting process. Why do you think that is?
More sifting space. The sifting plates on the machine are 5 times or more bigger than the mesh I was using, and it shakes constantly.
GYO
What size of mesh?
Got it 1/8 mesh
Bingo. Regular hardware store stuff.
I really appreciate your content! Thank you! I recently started small scale production at home. I have a question, my beetles layed eggs and larvae hatched. They are too small to give them potatoes yet, but should I spray the bran with water from time to time to give them source of moisture? Or will they get it from the air? Greetings from Poland ❤
I keep my environment at 50% humidity, I provide moisture to the baby trays once they are four weeks old. If you give it to them sooner, it may be helpful but they likely won't eat it all, you'll have a mold issue of you over indulge or you'll have cleanup during sifting. I'd try without moisture for the first 4 weeks and then see how your results / harvest looks.
Thank you! @@MidwestMealworms
Perhaps give them very small pieces of potato? Greeting from Germany
@@JS-hk4hc that would take time/labor that wouldn't be cost effective for me.
🙋🙏☺️
would it be worth combing mealworms and red wigglers. just dumping the frass over there?
I've heard of people feeding frass to composting worms, but never tried it.
I started following you years ago just to learn. Your knowledge is appreciated.❤
Thank you 🤝
I have learned so much from you…I am very appreciative for your teaching and helpfulness!
You're welcome 🤝
Some of those mealworms belong to me... feed them well please ...lol🎣🤜💥🤛🎣
U know I have the desire...lol.. 🎣🤜💥🤛🎣
Thank you for putting your knowledge out there for everyone! Anyone new to them: just start somewhere and remember to give them veggie scraps for water
Improve your audio 🔉
How? I'm one person on a limited budget, I don't have time to research and buy every gadget. Instead of just dropping that comment, could you provide me info on the solution to improve the audio while wearing a full face respirator?
That same reason you wear a respirator is why no one should eat that stuff or its byproducts, You poorly understand Bioaccumulations and the Food Chain, Your condensing trace toxins, get a different hobby buddy.
Thanks for stopping by. You're wrong, good luck with whatever you enjoy.
They like wheat bread as well..🎣🤜💥🤛🎣
nice! thanks fr the info~
I am looking for an alternative feed and found a superworm. Just started to cultivate my own.
I couldn't get the hang of superworms, they are tough. Stay persistent and patient!
How much heat will they generate ? Compared to outside room temp . Interested to know inside the bedding and out please
Depends on how many are in a tray, and what the ambient temp is. The more in a tray, the more heat generated. Larger mealworms produce more heat.
When getting starting stock, how can you tell if it's going to be good? After a generation or 2? And re asses?
No, usually takes much longer, and "good" is relative. I think as long as they look healthy and you can reproduce your own from them, that gives you a starting point. Then it's about managing the genetics to get the desired outcome you want.
