Solving the Frass Sifting Problem: DIY Upgrades for Better Efficiency - September 13, 2024

  • I’m working on improving my frass sifting setup by modifying a black tote with mesh and adjusting how frass and substrate flow through it.
I’ve encountered issues with the substrate and frass collecting on one side, causing the need for frequent manual cleaning.
To address this, I plan to attach metal L-shaped pieces to the U-shaped section to help distribute the frass more evenly across the mesh.
My goal is to tilt the mesh and prevent frass from pooling in one area, making the sifting process more efficient.
I'm considering turning the tote sideways to reduce the length of the mesh and enhance the sifting capability, but I need to balance simplicity and effectiveness in the design.

If the output tray body of your sifter is magnetic, you might be able to just super glue neodymium magnets to your tray. That way it's modular and, you can detach it easily. You can also adjust it in the event that the grade/level of the sifter changes.
If it's not magnetic, you can either super glue the magnets to the sifter body as well (mileage may vary) or use the just place magnets on either side of each of the vertical parts of the "U". The only concern I'd have with attaching at the "U" part would be that it's thin metal and load-bearing may cause it to warp over time. This may not affect the functionality of the sifter, but, like drilling holes, may affect the resale value of your equipment in the event that you decide to trade-up or have to liquidate it.
Another thing you could do is get one or two of those suction-grip shower handles, attach those to the sifter body, and use rope/belt to attach them to the tray. This would allow you to use the far-end of the sifting tray as an attachment point and support both sides of the tray. This will prevent any warping of the plastic on the proximal end of the tray, and allow you to modify the angle of hinge more easily.

@@jofofouj magnets, hadn't thought about that....love that idea.
Support rope is wild, I am worried about it being too long, what you described would be excellent. I'll think about that, brilliant idea!
      Thank you!

@@MidwestMealworms you can glue a wedge where the thick part is on the right and taper it to the side that it doesn’t come out then it would build up and spill over evenly

@@niceglass6484 I have a temp wedge that I hold in place with a clamp, it's nice to be able to remove it to let the machine completely empty the frass.
But this helped me realize, the black tray and mesh is tilted, if I tilt it the other way to level it out, it could stop the issue!
Will test this week and post an update.
