    So, here's a bit of history. I live in Paris, Canada, right now but grew up in Gouda where my dad worked at The Producent, the Gouda cheese factory. I used to walk to school through the city centre and past the St. Jan's Kerk on my way to school. I've never been back to The Netherlands, and get quite homesick watching your videos, but also live vicariously through your travels.

    The more I watch videos of the Netherlands the more I love it. I want to move there but I have to wait until I retire from my job, which is 3 1/2 years away. That should give me enough time to learn the Dutch language before I make the move.

    “We should come here on day without a cheese market”: totally agree!
    ‘Gouda bij kaarslicht’ is a nice event in december. Enchanting although very crowded.

    Hi both! Quite a nice movie on Gouda. I heard you ask about cheese markets. You should check out Alkmaar. It’s historically known for it and it’s quite large. Also monumental buildings and architecture there.

    I moved to the east of the Netherlands about 10 years ago for study and stayed for the beautiful nature. I was born and raised in Gouda and miss it quite a bit sometimes. I go there regularly to visit family, but I'm not that often in the city centre anymore and that's a shame. It's just a fun little experience, not overwhelming but also not barren. If you get the chance to enter the Sint Jan, then I highly recommend doing so. The historic stained glass is beautiful and has quite a rich story behind it. It's around 500 years old and is about 50% of all the stained glass that still remains from that century.

    Your tempo of checking out our Dutch cities is impressive! A visit to the inside of St Jan, with its stained glass windows including a lot of Dutch history should be mandatory on your next visit.😊
    Luckily enough there are enough Dutch cities and towns left for daytrips from Rotterdam. And after the midsized towns such as Dordrecht, there are also a lot of historic small towns within easy travel distance, like Oudewater, Schoonhoven, Brielle, Willemstad (Noord-Brabant), Maassluis, Gorinchem (recommended: take the ‘pont’(river Ferry) to Woudrichem and from there a short walk to a footpassenger Ferry taking you to a walkway to Slot Loevestein, an old Castle).
    A little bit further in the province of Zeeland (South West from Rotterdam), Zierikzee, Veere, Goes and of course Middelburg require attention. And don’t forget to stop in Bergen op Zoom (Markiezenhof!).
    A personal favorite of mine is a little further in the North-East: Deventer. Don’t forget to visit Bussinks koekhuis at the Brink! And take the Ferry accross the river IJssel for the best view at the old town.
    And lots and lots more …..
    By the way: my great grandmother was born at a house (above the family store) at the market in Gouda, 150y ago. She could see the town hall from their windows. The house is now a café/restaurant like many others there. Boy, would she have a hard time to see what we did to it….😮

    6:09 Should try it with both cheese and syrup. I regularly ate that on a slice of white bread when I was young (still do occasionally) and the combination of the salty cheese and sweet syrup is really good. I think it would work amazingly well between the waffle halfs.

    • @buncharted

    Best cheesemarket is defo in alkmaar. Also if you like reeenactment. October 8th there is alkmaars ontzet. The entire city will be transformed back into the golden age. Old boats. Cranes. Hay and animals in the streets.Thousands of actors, live music. They're partying and firing flintlocks. Surely one to experience.

    • @bingbong6066
      @bingbong6066 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can barely find any good photos of it. But its very well done. During the day there is a walkable route and an area of half the city thats full of the reënactment stuff.

    Hello the two of you. Other (smaller)cities which are interesting could be Groningen, Leeuwarden and Middelburg (besides the cities i mentioned before, Zwolle, Deventer, Zutphen). And even some smaller cities/villages as Heusden, Doesburg and Bourtange are very nice to see. Good luck/fun with your exploration of NL!

    Corona was pretty popular in the 90s/00s in bars/pubs/terraces in NL just like the Bacardi Breezers, but I think it got slowly surpassed by things like Radler beer and other drinks.

    There are a lot off these postcard cities. You have been Amersfoort already, but there are a lot off small towns/ villages on the randmeren/ijselmeer with similar things to see, Spakenburg with the only botterwerf in operation, Enkhuizen with Zuiderzee museum. If you want to see history from the Netherlands in one place there is the openluchtmuseum in Arnhem

And a with a little more of everything than Gouda has to offer in my view. Can not stand in for the food, though. Sure you will visit Delft. You may want to check out the "Heksenwaag" in Oudewater, between Gouda and Utrecht. People who were afraid of being accused of witchcraft could go there and get an official certificate of not being a witch or wizard, provided they were heavy enough (which they always were). The certificate was recognized all over Europe and thus saved countless lives that would otherwise have been lost in witchcraft trials. It has been operational since the 15th century. Today it's a tourist attraction where people can still get the certificate after being weighted.

    Nice video as usual. I was in Amsterdam five years ago and remember seeing Mexican restaurants and they were some of the most expensive places to eat! I thought that if the Mexican restaurant owners in the United States knew how much they could charge for food there in NL they would all pack up and move overseas. Hope not though.

    Hi Michelle and Alex. I replied yesterday to the video of Gouda. I lived there in the centre for 3 years and went into detail about places and some personal stuff. I got a ❤ message on my phone from you but my reaction is deleted. And I'm very sure I didn't delete it. Or misbehaved/violated yt rules or was rude/disrespecting. I spent some good time on writing it. Any idea what happend there?
    Because i stored the biggest part of the text to my clipboard and put it in a file. And I can put it back and i remember the rest. But something went wrong and it's lost. Np if you don't think it was nice or too long whatever. Just tell me.

      @Mart687 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bunchartedI placed it, made a quick edit and back on. You read it and hearted it. So it was hearted after the edit or the heart would be lost right. And i was doing something else and noticed the heart and clicked on it and it's gone. The gremlins are loose again, chewing on cables in the data center and pulling out hd's having a party. And smoking cigarettes. Hide, lock your doors and windows everyone! And don't sprinkle water on them! This is some weird stuff cause I didn't do it.
      But haha! I got an ace up my sleeve. I often ctrl a and ctrl c when writing a bigger text. Not the first time I lost a lot of work. And noticed last night it was gone and most of the text was on my clipboard so stored it in a file. Give me 3 hours and its back. Need to make dinner first. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. Cause the old dog already knows all tricks. 👍It's not a dutch saying, just made it up. 🤣
