    This was fun to watch for a Haarlem resident. Though I had to suppress screaming at the screen for all the great stuff you were missing out on. Teyler's Museum, Frans Hals Museum, bloemencorso, Great Bavo interior, the weird history of the V&D building, etcetera. Keep up the good work.

    Nice videos. 👍👍
    I guess the pronunciation of the 'a' in Dutch words is the most tricky letter for English speakers. Dutch has 2 a-sounds. The short 'a' which sounds like the a in the English Harlem, car, what. The Dutch long 'aa' is unknown in English, but the English "I" (...me) would be written in Dutch as 'aai', so leave the ending sound out of 'I' and you have the perfect Dutch 'aa' sound. The tricky thing in Dutch is that a so-called "open syllable", ending on an a,e,o,u is written with 1 vowel but pronounced as a long vowel. So written "pa-ling" is pronounced as 'paa-ling', due to the open syllable. Same goes for the e,o,u

    • @buncharted
      @buncharted  ปีที่แล้ว

      so how should we be pronouncing haarlem? this is super helpful!

    • @arjansnoek7257
      @arjansnoek7257 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@buncharted double a,e,o or u are elongated sounds. So aa sounds like the a in amount. Maybe even more sustained.

    • @arjansnoek7257
      @arjansnoek7257 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even better is the last a in Canada

    • @lbergen001
      @lbergen001 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A double aa is simple, it's always the long a-sound. Haar-lem also has a 'closed' vowel. so pretty strait forward. Same voor e,o,u
      With 1 'a' it gets a bit tricky. You have to find the vowel and decide if it's an 'open' syllable (long a-sound) or a 'closed' syllable (short a-sound).
      So: "dak" (eng: roof) is a closed syllable, so short a-sound. "daken" (eng: roofs) is a open syllable, so long a-sound (pronounce "daa-ken").
      or: "pan" (eng: pan) is a closed syllable, so short a-sound. "pannen" (eng: pans) is also an closed syllable, so short a-sound (pronounce: "pan-nen").
      other examples:
      1 bus, 2 bus-sen. (short u-sound, short u-sound)
      1 haar, 2 ha-ren. (long a-sound; long a-sound)
      1 jas, 2 jas-sen (short a-sound; short a-sound)
      1 hand, 2 han-den (short a-sound; short a-sound)
      1 buur, 2 bu-ren (long u-sound, long u-sound)
      1 been, 2 be-nen (long e-sound; long e-sound)
      1 doos, 2 do-zen (long o-sound; long o-sound), the s-z switch is another thing.... :(
      1 bos, 2 bos-sen (short o-sound; short o-sound)

    Ah, my home town and I have good memories, about wijn en kaas in 't goede uur! Like once in a lifetime memories (won't tell you what it was) but it was expensive, but worth it. I actually wondered lately if it still exists. I was there 35 years ago and nothing changed apparently. I heard they recently changed the name of one of the St Bavo churches (there is an old one you were, and a new one just over the canal near wijn en kaas in 't goede uur). The new one is also worth a visit, by the way. Impressive cathedral. If you go inside the old Bavo, you can find a 17th century tombstone with the shortest text in the world on it. "Ik". (I). Can it get more renaissance than that?

If you miss the parade they’re displayed at Monday as well to be demolished on Tuesday.
    If September third (or 4 September) doesn’t suit you guys they’re displaying the scale models at aardbeienfeesten (strawberry festival including free strawberry stands 🍓 10 & 11 June ‘23.

    Too bad that you didn't stay for the flower parade, it's worth to see what creations were made and also the flowers are so fresh that you really can smell the fresh flowers on such a great car. You could have taken a train to Heemstede (around the corner) after dinner where the parade was at around 8-9 pm. You may put it on the list for next year of course. Further I agree that Haarlem really is a beautiful lovely city. Actually it's a little bit like Amsterdam, but then with more 'class' and not so many tourists and no stag-parties. Love your channel!

  • @Mart687

    I'm not familiar in Haarlem. But they say it's known for pronunciation of the language and the term is algemeen beschaafd nederlands (abn) and the difference is like the word school. English is same spelling but sounds like skoel like shoe. Haarlem school and in Gouda sounds more like schol. Also a fish. So haarlem is known for perfect pronunciation.
    Fish. Haring is of course a seafish, lekkerbek and kibbeling the expensive type is cod. Or another type of whitefish like haak so both saltwater fish. Paling = eel is a freshwater fish. Endangered species and catching is regulated/limited.
    I can tell you something about cheese. I worked at a warehouse where cheese was going through a riping process, the longer the stronger the taste is. I think i explained this before and how it's maintained. If not ask.
    But I think what people mean by saying try some cheese from the market because they have more variety of farmers cheese. Supermarket cheese produced in large quantity is made from pasteurized milk and farmers cheese often from raw milk. At a supermarket you can find cheese that's a streekproduct/regional product from a farm so also raw milk. And on the market visa versa. I think you have to ask the seller if it's not on the label. Raw or pasteurized, the taste is different. And there's local differences and factors are like type of soil the grass grows on and what herbs grow in fields in this location and even how close to the sea the grass is. In the west there are differences in taste and also different from cheese made in the east of the nederlands. And don't throw away a block of cheese with a bit of mold. Just cut the moldy part off and the rest is perfectly fine for consumption.
    Jopen beer. Not a big fan of ipa's. Too hoppy for me.

    • @Mart687
      @Mart687 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can compare cheese making a bit with whisky. Blended or single malt. A blended is cheaper and more like a supermarket cheese. A single malt is like a farmers cheese from 1 farm and it's fields and supermarket from milk from a lot of farms and pasteurised.
      Distance from the sea, by that i mean the influence of salty air. Air condenses on fields in the night with temp differences. That has an effect on the grass the cows eat. Thats what i mean by distranse from the sea if you are wondering what i meant. .

      Indeed, haven't had a paling in years because the Spaniards eat them by the hundreds at once when they are still baby eels. Remarkable that only the Japanese and the Dutch seem to appreciate the eel as a delicacy, Japanese tend to like the raw herring too but otherwise the cuisines are very different, also when it comes to international respect.

      @@AlexK-yr2thThe term ’Eel farms' suggests eels are born and raised on the farms, but don't the farms get their young eels from nature as newborn baby eels don't survive in captivity? Isn't it fair to say a species is struggling when their population has declined by 90% in 50 years? Even if there are a lot of initiatives to reintroduce them and to add fish migration features to the rivers and canals. Let's just hope these measures help to make the eel population robust, for the eels sake and the people that rely on them for their income.

    The European eel is a critically endangered species and probably shouldnt be on anybody's menu. 😵‍💫
    If youre into cheese, skip factory cheese and always choose "Boerenkaas", thats guaranteed (by EU law) Artisan cheese, made on a cheesefarm from animals of that same farm.

      If it was possible to farm eels, we might have found the solution for the survival of this species. However, baby eels do not survive in captivity and thus farmed eel is *nothing less than wild-caught baby eel which has been grown out in a nursery*.
      My facts come from ICES (the intergovernmental marine science organization with a network of nearly 6000 scientists from over 700 marine institutes in 20 member countries).
      And here is what they say about restocking eel:
      ICES notes that the restocking of eels (the practice of adding eels to a waterbody from another source) is considered a “conservation measure” in the EU regulation and in many eel management plans for achieving the 40% escapement target on all EMUs (Eel Management Unit).
      Restocking is reliant on a glass eel fishery catch, which is in contradiction with the current advice.
      The net benefit of restocking of eels to reproductive potential of the stock is unknown. It requires information on e.g. carrying capacity estimates of glass eel source estuaries, detailed mortality estimates at each step of the restocking process, and performance estimates of stocked vs. non-stocked eels.
      ICES advises that given the above mentioned uncertainties and potential harmful effects (ICES 2016b), and following the precautionary approach, *any catch for restocking should not be allowed*.’’
      😲
