I am old. I have made that same crossing many times. Ordinarily I would chime in and offer lots of sage advice but you two have your wits finely tuned and are well prepared for the adventure. If you feel a great loud bang on the hull it will probably be a male whale warning you away from his females. A piece of rag fluttering on the hook makes a good bait. Cut strips of fish to hang and dry in the sun to eat later. When the little bird visits you speak to him softly and offer him fresh water. ( south Florida ) .
Thank you for wearing safety harnesses. I followed Robin Lee Graham in his 1965 sail around the world and have been a believer in them every since. None of the “big” sailing channels every wear them (Delos, La Vagabonde, Doodles) nor even life jackets on their infants and toddlers. You rock. Best of luck on your sailing. I like your well thought out plans and your ability to adjust as needed.
None of the “big” sailing channels are SAILORS...On the big crossings they always take "professionals" in some cases it's the manufacturers (that sponsor them) they take the boats FOR THEM, they arrive by plane, do you want an example? la vagabonde...

The catamaran was taken to the Azores by professionals and they arrived by plane, Australia-England-LISBON-SAO MIGUEL, Now, when they crossed the Atlantic with the prophet Thumberg, how many professional sailors came inside the catamaran? I go further, they came so frightened and sick that they barely got up and just for the picture of the day... it's all business! The detail they NEVER answer: what is the environmental impact from the construction to the recycling of the plastic boat built with nuclear energy? Being so ecologists... Even the clothes they wear (and are paid for it) come from the petrochemical industry!

I think the hardest part of an ocean crossing is leaving the coast. Even when the wind low. Once your into it you have more confidence. On a different note it appears to me that the reef at the claw is set up wrong , it should go from the back of the boom through the block and down to the boom not back again. This makes the foot of the sail close to the boom and your able to gather the sail together. Also it flattens the sail more witch is what you want when you put in a reef. I enjoy crossing the Pacific. When you are racing you don't get to pick the weather window of your liking, the start day comes and if it is blowing a Gail you suck it up .IF you get sick you still stand your watch. I really love your videos. It reminds me of myself some 25 years ago experiencing all the doubts and concerns that you are expressing. I can’t give you any advice nor should I other than to say always talk things over with each other. Problem shared is a problem halved and mostly it turns out not to be a problem at all. Stay safe.
Atlantic crossing day 1! Yeah! Really was a good day even with the anxiety of weather conditions. I wish I was blissfully in the middle of the ocean when the Coronavirus started. Really love how you are balancing the there is always something to do on a boat with the sailing and scenery. I think y'all are truly capturing what it's really like living on a boat. It's not all fairy tails and beauty. When I lived aboard I actually like the freak 0 dark thirty storms...They brought excitement. I can sleep very well in a storm in an anchorage feeling the rhythm of my boat...As soon as that rhythm changes I know there is a problem and my eyes pop open. Keep living the dream!

Another lovely video. 5 weeks at sea and I guess you’ll feel land sick as the sailors of old did. I used to feel it after just a weekend on the boat! As always I wish you both fair winds, tides and currents.
Good Video. Before going inshore to try and get a mobile signal for a weather update, try this. Make a little canvas bag. Put one of your mobile phones in the bag and hoist it on a spare halyard to the top of the mast, then try and use this mobile at the top of the mast as a hot spot for your tablet etc. I've found I can get 3 or 4 G miles out opposed to using a device at deck level. If you are worrying about it getting tangled up the mast then even just using the line going to the spreader you use for courtesy flags etc.
Great edit 🤙. Watching the wind and the waves is such a chilled experience. Consider extending the crossing series with some added sailing, just the boat, wind and waves. Keep up the great work and enjoy.

To prevent seasick, tie a belt or strap around tummy. Have no liquids...eat dry biscuit, toast etc. Sit forward and never upright or more than 90' reclined...you won't get sick
Most excellent, I'd have been pissed if you'd headed for the anchorage, good on you girl, glad you're both over being green behind the gills😂😂😂😂 fortunately something I don't suffer from at all, EVER. Ironically I really enjoy a good feisty start to a passage, it seems to settle me into it quicker and there's no time for seasick steve or doubting and feeling sorry for yourself, 25 knots+ is about perfect to start a passage, another thing is that if anything breaks it's relatively easy to return to port as opposed to being way off-shore 1000 miles from land. Maybe it's just the South African way, we do tend to sail hard and work the boat and rig pretty hard, products of our prevailing weather systems and geography, both are formidable and deadly at times. Conditions look good, nice point of sail and decent breeze, Hydrovane doing it's job like a champ (great bit of kit) boat looks settled, well balanced and comfortable, fair winds, safe passage, God bless you and keep you safe👍

I know sounds crazy but there are times somehow I do my bowline wrong but for some reason that second that Ryan did the preventer it made so much sense and dont think I will ever have that issue again. lol. Hope your trip was a safe one.

Thanks a lot, especially the youthful bit! We have a stick for the gopro but the main camera that has the decent mic is a bit heavy for a stick, we’ve got the most wide angle lens they do for that camera though :)

a Faraday cage is a metal structure when, if hit by electricity, channels that electricity around the outside, so anything inside it won't get zapped. I'm assuming they'd throw the laptop/phones/other electronics in there during a storm so a lightning strike doesn't get to them. I'm sure there's a more technically correct way of stating it...
Sailing North of the islands was the right choice, I assure you. So no regrets to have. Sailing South of the islands would have been nerve wracking. Succession of dead calms with flat seas when directly in the lee of the island, especially the high ones, and 40+ knt wind with heavy swells in between islands.
Im assuming you two made it across ok. Been watching since the med. i hope the corona stuff dident treat yall too bad if you made it across. I heard all the islands were on lock down in the Caribbean. There’s probably alot of folks wondering the same as me. Yall are both always ontop of the. Hope all is good. Let ua know. With love. Because I've watched some of your videos this seems better than picking any random ARC or crossing video. Did you buy a hydrovane second hand or did it break and you improvised?
The Hydrovane was installed 40 years ago by a previous owner. The airvanes it came with were made of wood, which only worked in heavy winds. So we made a DIY airvane made of spinnaker fabric. Not a great look, but it steered us 3,000nm across the Atlantic.

Get farm fresh non refrigerated eggs, cover them with Vaseline or wax...or turn them every day. You don't need to refrigerate eggs, there's other options.
You want to be sick because you are talking about it and thinking about being sick. don't think about it and even more try not to talk about it, its all in your thoughts. But great vid guys, what an awesome achievement!👍👊

@@SailingKittiwake No trust me, me and my family have a 45ft yacht and we have been sailing and on boats for over 14 years. i have been seasick many times due to my negativity of thinking i am going to be sick. its not the right way to think. don't think about it, it is always in your mind and that is what makes you sick.:) Good luck!👍
I don't consider a Tayana 37 (SMALL SAILBOAT) it is the PERFECT sailboat to cross the Atlantic or the world, a Hurley 22 is a SMALL SAILBOAT; and it has done it.
Meclizine Hydrochloride is the only med that works for us. We tested them all after a trip where we were both heavily seasick at the same time. Stugeron gives Elena a stomach ache.
Stugeron is worth trying again with food. But be sure it is the 15mg size not the 75mg size. With a crew of 5 in 50+ knot winds and 15-20 ft seas, no one got sick when taking Stugeron 15mg.
@@roncanizares9966 Stugeron and meclizine are closely related early generation antihistamines, both developed in the 1950's. Stugeron is not available in the US or Canada.
@@SailingKittiwake For early seasickness, you might try putting a foam earplug in one ear. Can't promise it will work, but if it does it will take effect almost immediately, and there is no downside to trying it.

@@SailingKittiwake No trust me, me and my family have a 45ft yacht and we have been sailing and on boats for over 14 years. i have been seasick many times due to my negativity of thinking i am going to be sick. its not the right way to think. don't think about it, it is always in your mind and that is what makes you sick.:)

I don't consider a Tayana 37 (SMALL SAILBOAT) it is the PERFECT sailboat to cross the Atlantic or the world, a Hurley 22 is a SMALL SAILBOAT; and it has done it.

At 5:30s is that a full hoist on the main? The foot looks well short of the end of the boom - does it have a trimming reef in it or is that the fit?
Yes, the previous owner installed an oversized main and boom. We replaced it with the right size main, but the boom is still the same size.
What do you take to prevent seasickness? I and many others have had great success with Stugeron 15mg. It is the off shore sailors best friend!
Meclizine Hydrochloride is the only med that works for us. We tested them all after a trip where we were both heavily seasick at the same time. Stugeron gives Elena a stomach ache.
Stugeron is worth trying again with food. But be sure it is the 15mg size not the 75mg size. With a crew of 5 in 50+ knot winds and 15-20 ft seas, no one got sick when taking Stugeron 15mg.
@@roncanizares9966 Stugeron and meclizine are closely related early generation antihistamines, both developed in the 1950's. Stugeron is not available in the US or Canada.
@@SailingKittiwake For early seasickness, you might try putting a foam earplug in one ear. Can't promise it will work, but if it does it will take effect almost immediately, and there is no downside to trying it.
I buy it in the Bahamas or Bermuda. Also when a friend or family member travels to England, I ask them to buy it. I keep a good inventory.
