  • Homelessness in Colorado is one of the worst in the country, and Denver is also dealing with a particularly bad crisis. In this Denver7 in-depth report, we take a look at some of the issues facing people experiencing homelessness, and how advocates and government officials are working to help them.

There is no reason why anyone should be homeless and hungry in America, do what salt lake city did and build a huge tiny home community..

I lived in Denver in the 1990's and it was a delight to live there but when I went up there to visit this past summer after being away for about 15 years I could not believe the homeless situation. There were people living in tents in front of peoples' houses on the grass strip between the street and sidewalk in Park Hill, Capital Hill etc. What happened to Denver?

Cornerstone asked us to leave during a gap in the eviction moratorium. We have been hoping for a place and home since August.
We both work. We haven't given up. The cost of living and a reduced income since covid has almost gotten to us. We haven't asked for help but it's about time to swallow our pride

Everything went to shit when Colorado legalized Marijuana. It was bad before but so many out of state people moved in and paying more for housing pushing locals and lower income out. The roads became packed and an hour drive became a three hour drive to the mountains. The camping spots are being trashed and they wonder why the homelessness is getting worse? Until every state can legalize then the states that do become bombarded. Im a Colorado native, grew up across the street from PH Methodist and worked there. .its changed so much. We need help with the homelessness but its a day care and I don't think this will be safe. My brother Steven Bailey helped with occupy and I support the cause but I believe we need to figure out better places and ways to help.

Aurora Mayor. Lmao! I didn't access shelters often because there is little respect. My brother asked for seconds on food a couple times and was told No! We watched the food come in.
Where did it go? The church comes every week with tons. But... The stuff they put away in the kitchen is rarely seen by clients! I saw 2 big bins of candy come in... Only one evening with dinner was that candy given to clients. Some of the workers at Aurora Day center are amazing! Some are hateful. Barney Fife trying to be big boss!
Jason, while dry sense of humor is a compassionate person. Very caring. At the same time direct and to the point. The mayor doesn't realize there are more than shelters and encampments out there! My brother and I had our identities stolen, we were on the street for almost 3 years.
Some people use drugs to cope.
Others have illness. We need to figure out what to do. People are not disposable.

😒 Mayor Hancock needs to actually do his job‼️‼️‼️
I called his office 5 -7 years ago & after Marijuana was legalized. I only got the run around from his assistant in regards to people becoming homeless because of the inflation of all the "transplants"🪳🪳🪳

Denver's Road Home and other programs for the homeless work if they put in the work. I know that sounds selfish but, I was homeless in Denver for an extended amount of time I got in on the DRH voucher and now I have been stabily houses for 11 years. I try to help or be an inspiration but at times it's a battle because I have to combat with their addiction which I have battled with as well. In other words I had to want housing more than the addiction.

Affordable housing is 1 of many things that are needed. Transition programs and accountability DOES WORK, there’s not enough resources to support this need. MAT system in Seattle has had some impact. There are a lot of programs in Denver and Aurora (211/311) but it can be very hard to navigate. Not having a phone or address makes it difficult to getting a job, setting up banking etc. My sibling and I have tried to help a close family member get out of this terrible cycle but cannot “force” mental health or drug rehab. Even if we could - without accountability or their desire to change, the cycle keeps persisting. We keep trying and are broken hearted with the circumstances over and over again. :(

Man, feeding homeless people is good but it comes no where near close to solving homelessness. If the Democrats wants to bring in 65,000 refugees and give them money and housing, they should be able to do the same for homeless people in the United States. Homelessness is a human rights issue, especially, in the riches country in the world.

It's not just those who've been accepted as 'refugees' there are also tens of thousands currently walking in getting funds & housing and travel expenses...meanwhile, we have vets, elderly etc. sleeping on the streets : ( There are no Dem. run cities that are succeeding anywhere in the USA, but enough evidence to show their policies have never worked.

Stop blaming politicians, you and I know the problem is the homeless people themselves.. they don't' want to work, they don't want to live by any society norms.......

Housing? How about free Housing for single families and kids who already work 50hrs still can't make.
    No they don't starve
No it's not covid due to only that, no it's not lack of work or lack of housing
It's from a drug addicted nest that's why they homeless it's a choice. I could be homless too but I refuse I work everyday to only be able to pay for my rent 1800 No I don't have extra $ for a car, or vacation, or can't even save but I do what I have to do and that's work
Shelters will take them yet u can't be on drugs can't drink rules and ppl who don't want to follow rules guess what they end up exactly where u watching...
It's easier to live that way then to live by making a living

The solution to houselessness is housing. Once a person has their basic needs met (food, shelter, and clothing), it becomes far more possible to take advantage of employment and training programs, treatment programs, etc. As they are able, folks can move from free transitional housing to affordable public housing to the private market and, one day perhaps, to their own property.
Even millenials doubled their wealth over the pandemic. Most people just need a couple grand and a few months' rest to get on their feet. In case it's not clear, that's a low-cost investment toward rehabilitating a human being's dignity and ability to fulfill their potential as a member of their community.

Can't help people who aren't willing to help themselves. Most of them are strung out on drugs and alcohol. They end up bringing nothing but chaos to the workforce. I know because I dispatch these kinds to work for the day. You help them out and they're ungrateful for the help they receive.

Question " Why is homelessness even a situation?"
So, America is the wealthiest nation in the world? And American citizens are refugees in own nation?
Is it not clear, Political parties rely heavily on forcing Americans to accept torture as a way of life, is a lucrative business transaction? Sure Denver is aware, parties want Americans to live a life of hardship, so they can guarantee themselves, each, the opportunity to collect on, that they are, this nation ( one and only) strategist/ consultant
Sure Denver understands, without all this manufacturing economic, homelessness, behavioral, even environment crisis, political parties would be out of business?

Tax the rich and corporations. Spend the money on housing for the homeless. The rich need to pay their fair share. So called "Christian" people look down on the homeless, even though Jesus says to help them first.
