The last time that you went to the village in FortGains Ga. , I just wanted to let you know there's a very old slave cemetery with actual markers!! My son and I just went there and cleaned off some graves, you inspired us to do it! Wish we could of met you when you happen to be in a 30 mile radius! I currently live in Southern California and that is not a common thing where I live, or Autumn leaves and rain storms. But in 2 weeks we are moving to Georgia so I am looking forward to those things. lol Not happy about the humidity though. We can't have it all.

An old church currently for sale in West Virginia has a graveyard & there are notifications if the conditions on the real estate listing. They can buy the entire property, but cannot move, build on it deface the graveyard. (There may be a permit process for moving bodies & headstones, but it would be incredibly costly.)
Due to the pandemic and social distancing this past summer I visited several old cemeteries looking for relatives and people of history. It was a good excuse to ride my motorcycle and explore places I normally would not visit. I found that eating lunch in old cemeteries talking to the dead to be very peaceful. Found grandparents, aunts uncles and cousins. Many early Minnesota pioneers including the mass graves of the Dakota Uprising and the forest fire of 1918. Plan to search again the summer of 2021. When I was attending collage I had a job with a green house and one of my jobs was placing flowers on graves in local cemeteries. Love the job, no one bothered me, watched deer and fox everyday.
We had a farm in West Virginia when I was a kid and when we went hiking up in the mountains above our barn, we found an old graveyard. It was very spooky.
So sad that cemeteries fall into such disarray. It would be wonderful to see them all cleaned up. BUT With how times are now, I'm afraid the IDIOTS out there nowadays would destroy the graves for the sheer fact that THEY don't like what may be written on the gravestone. People just do not have any respect for anything. Not even themselves. Our world has just gotten so sad
I don’t think my current relatives know where our family is buried, or care. The last were scattered. Families travel all over now, and remarry, blended families have no chance. Are they even being taken care of? How long is the commitment?
Super Interesting Robert! I've been on hunts in cemeteries looking for relatives. My Grandfather found his Great Grandfathers and G Grandmothers graves, which were just field stone. So he had a granite marker made. He made the positive identification through the church records. And it was a church he had started. He'd be my GGG Grandfather born in Ireland in 1772 and died 1860. I do the same as you guys do....just not on the same scale....it's the stories that bring life to these old markers. Gone AND forgotten but at one time people mourned and cried at that very same spot.
Such a shame that the cemetery is so unkempt and abandoned. I am so glad that their are people like you are able to document these places for future generations. If these places are to be built upon I hope that the deceased would be treated with the respect they deserve and reinterred in a suitable location. What I am going to say may sound MORBIB but I love to walk Old Cemeteries simply because. If we do not know our history our future is surely lost. When I find a grave with a faded inscription I take a stiff brush and rub the lettering what becomes revealed is indeed history. back years ago people were buried on their own property family plots are scattered all over the south a lot of plantations had many generations buried there.there was no rule or regulation on graves long forgotten church grave yards are all over no telling how many graves were built over or paved over not knowing they were there
There was an old cemetery outside of Tullahoma TN. Alot of the markers were gone but you could see clearly rows of graves that had sunken. One grave had an iron waist high fence. It had an obelisk maybe 5ft tall engraved with a pentagram and Circle No 13 Witches Coven along with some Latin. The woman had died in the early 1920s. We used to drink beer back there in the 80s. I went back a few years ago and it had been vandalized and the obelisk smashed. I wish I had taken pictures back then. In 10 or 20 more years it will be lost.
Sad that the people there have been forgotten over time. The Dr. trying to see his sick grand daughter and he may have caught whatever she had and they both died. I wonder why she had no marker. Maybe a sickness was going round and prevented the marker from ever been put up. Thank you guys for remembering folks in graveyards like this.
Many children were never given headstones. My father had a baby brother who died in the 60's at 1yr old and only a tiny 6inX6in marker was placed with the date, no name or anything else. Truly sad and equally amazing just how much time has forgotten.
Do you tend your relatives burial plots in another state or country? People do eventually die out especially when people were dying so much younger than they do today. It doesn't mean that people have forgotten. Maybe they're too old or sick or in a nursing home. Why would someone travel thousands of miles to tend the grave of a relative when they aren't even there, just their bones and a box. All a plot is, is a reminder and a guilt trip, no one is HOME! Pray at home or in church for god's sake. They aren't coming back.
@@matthewbryant2735 A Cemetary near me in Plymouth Pa many died during the 1918 Spanish Flu , they were dying so fast all they did was dig the graves and bury them , some 2 to a grave if the same family . Many were children and whole families , no headstones some metal stakes with numbers on and sunken graves .

I think the ornate H on the Harris grave is Celtic. Thank you for what you are doing, bringing to our awareness that many persons final resting places should not be forgotten; this is close to my heart as I found my 2nd great aunt and uncles graves just outside the perimeter of an old cemetary in Oregon.
The misperception is on find a grave when it looks like it’s being maintained when in fact it isn’t, sad but this happens a lot. We have many family cemeteries both maintained and self maintained and it only takes one generation to loose track. Thank you for your unconditional love for these graves.

Several Years Ago when I was Hunting on Government Land I found a Old Cemitary and it's close to Rock Eagle outside of Eatonton Georgia and it's from the 1800 hundreds and it has a Granite Wall that waa built from Hand and it should be a Historic Site because of the Historic Nature of how hard the People worked to give the People a Great Place to Rest in Peace.

I love your videos. I have met a lot of old farmers and cowboys here in North Central Texas over the past 30 years of metal detecting. When they found out I love history, I have had them walk me across river beds and way out in the middle of nowhere to show me unmarked Graves, usually either cowboys or settlers caught up in Comanche raids and killed. No one knew their families so they were given a good Christian burial as the old guys called it and their Graves were usually marked with a plain flat stone stood up. I wonder how many Graves lay totally unmarked.

Know I’ve discovered my revolutionary war veterans whom people are caring for their graves in the colonies. So a thankful,for those who adopt these cemeteries and maintain them. I’m praying as you reveal them on here, locals will adopt them and care for them.

Hey, Robert, @12:15 when you read the inscription, Our Mother S C Gordy, you gave the 'Birth' year of 1737, 'Died' year of 1872. That would have made that Lady 135 yrs. old I looked it up, she was born 1797....that would have made her age in the 74-75 yr. old range. No big deal, I know those old Head Stone are hard to read. I enjoy your videos. Watching from Texas.
That was amazing. Within that huge area you were able to locate the grave your friend was looking for. Not only that but you were able to obtain enough details from the incredibly worn out headstone to confirm. Amazing !! Your friend, so moved with the discovery, God Bless him. I like how nature takes over. Just like it has for millions of years. Although, it is very interesting to discover olden cemeterys I can only imagine what the people were like. May god of the universe bless each of us as we hear these names and see the stones that remain.
I was wondering why grave yards are not maintained in out country any more ? I know they are in my state but I am seeing these old ones not cleaned in along time. Were they sold as a parcel of private property ? In my area the scouts take care of the Veterans Graves on holiday s with US flags. Also some groups volunteer for a paupers & slave grave yard in my county. I wonder if a group of volunteers wouldn't clean this place because I did see at least one soldier there? It is so sad to loose this part of history to the weeds.
I keep worrying that Robert will cause CSA markers to be destroyed, given the state of unrest in this country. That would be a shame if these graves were destroyed.
@@franceslambert8070 I don't know anyone that would desecrate a grave regardless of who was buried there. Confederate monuments in places of honor are different than a grave.
Sometimes these places are a lot safer letting nature disguise them. I know of too many instances where cemeteries were cleaned up and attention brought to the effort. Next thing you know, vandals not only destroyed the markers, but actually opened some graves and scatter the remains. I was with a group back in the 90's touring one such cemetery and I discovered a skull that had been removed from an opened grave and just thrown up against a tree. It was heartbreaking, disturbing and I can't tell you how angry we all were once we got past the initial shock.
How cool! I live in North Carolina and always wanted you to come here and film some of the cemeteries here but in this video there is a N.C. link, and a Randolph county one at that which is where I grew up! Awesome. Before finding your videos I never knew someone loved cemeteries as much as I do. Thank you for what your doing!

When you go back, you need to take some of that headstone cleaning spray. You spray it on, and let the rain do the cleaning. I saw it on another TH-cam channel. It would make that headstone a lot more legible.
I have done the same thing. My then fiance and I came across a head stone. We went to check it out. We barely could make it out but after cleaning it we saw the date of death was 1668. It was so sad because this entire cemetery was forgotten. This was in north Jersey. These people were God's children- forgotten but not forgotten by God.

The emblem on the back of Mr. Harris's marker looks almost like a very ornate H.
I've seen stylized initals on the back of old grave markers. I belive this is an H.
Family emblem.. People don't use them anymore. Or just a nice gesture for a nice stone. Who knows

Same here. He nonchalantly told us that the feller was well over 100 years old and I knew that was wrong for back then.
He said born 1737 and died in 1872. Over 100 years old

That would have made that Lady 135 yrs. old I looked it up, she was born 1797....that would have made her age in the 74-75 yr. old range. No big deal, I know those old Head Stone are hard to read. That was amazing. Within that huge area you were able to locate the grave your friend was looking for. Not only that but you were able to obtain enough details from the incredibly worn out headstone to confirm. Amazing !! Your friend, so moved with the discovery, God Bless him. I like how nature takes over. Just like it has for millions of years. Although, it is very interesting to discover olden cemeterys I can only imagine what the people were like. May god of the universe bless each of us as we hear these names and see the stones that remain.

I was wondering why grave yards are not maintained in out country any more ? I know they are in my state but I am seeing these old ones not cleaned in along time. Were they sold as a parcel of private property ? In my area the scouts take care of the Veterans Graves on holiday s with US flags. Also some groups volunteer for a paupers & slave grave yard in my county. I wonder if a group of volunteers wouldn't clean this place because I did see at least one soldier there? It is so sad to loose this part of history to the weeds.
I keep worrying that Robert will cause CSA markers to be destroyed, given the state of unrest in this country. That would be a shame if these graves were destroyed.
@@franceslambert8070 I don't know anyone that would desecrate a grave regardless of who was buried there. Confederate monuments in places of honor are different than a grave.
Sometimes these places are a lot safer letting nature disguise them. I know of too many instances where cemeteries were cleaned up and attention brought to the effort. Next thing you know, vandals not only destroyed the markers, but actually opened some graves and scatter the remains. I was with a group back in the 90's touring one such cemetery and I discovered a skull that had been removed from an opened grave and just thrown up against a tree. It was heartbreaking, disturbing and I can't tell you how angry we all were once we got past the initial shock.

The one date on SC Gordy has to be 1812, not 1872. She can’t be 140. Lol may be the birthdate was 1787 that would make her 85.

The "mark" on the back of the stone is the letter H for Holt.
Do you know what significance H (Holt) have on monuments?

I live in North Carolina and always wanted you to come here and film some of the cemeteries here but in this video there is a N.C. link, and a Randolph county one at that which is where I grew up! When you go back, you need to take some of that headstone cleaning spray. You spray it on, and let the rain do the cleaning. I saw it on another TH-cam channel. It would make that headstone a lot more legible.

I have done the same thing. My then fiance and I came across a head stone. We went to check it out. We barely could make it out but after cleaning it we saw the date of death was 1668. It was so sad because this entire cemetery was forgotten. This was in north Jersey. These people were God's children- forgotten but not forgotten by God.
