Flooding and loss of power are not fun. I'm glad you had some handy dandy history bounding gear to at least insert some fun into that atmosphere and some warmth as well. Thank you for sharing.

The buttons on your skirt remind me of the hobble skirt, one of the big differentiations between proper Edwardian fashion and pre-WWI fashion thanks to Paul Poiret (but really our dear Ms. Wright) and his Far Eastern fashion revolution! I know what you're wearing is no hobble, but I remember reading Poiret's bold revolutionary statement, "I have freed the bust from its perennial prison, but I have put chains on the legs." Thus I wonder: would one wear a such a long-line corset as yours with a hobble skirt, too?

Yes, it's not a true hobble skirt, but it is very slim. It was based on a photo of my great grandmother in 1914. The slimmer silhouette comes in about 1908 and is at it's peak 1910-14. The longer line corset developped because of those slimmer styles. It smooths the body from waist to hip and the focus is no longer on just the small waist. If you were truly emulating Poiret's style , then you might have discarded the corset, but just as today, when you are used to wearing support garments from a young age, it's not always comfortable or practical to not wear something. And for most women, the idea of not wearing a corset was truly scandalous!

Is it warmer than modern winter clothing?

I always find it warmer to wear multiple layers. I think the difference is that historical clothing made from natural fibres is breathable, wheras if modern winter clothing is made from synthetics it can become uncomfortable. I also think that including underlayers like chemise, corset and petticoat adds to the warmth level of historic clothing. We don't really utilise those layers in modern times, here in the UK at any rate, when we rely a lot on central heating.

@@blueladycouture and a lot of people are either allergic or sensitive to polyester and it is poisoning the planet. Real fibers are more comfortable than polyester, which is just plastic.
