  • Dental hygiene school is a rigorous program but the most difficult part I'd say is the balancing act you have to learn to do for managing working and studying. I hope this video helps you gather some ideas and insight for creating balance and becoming more prepared for the dental hygiene student life.

Thanks for posting this. People annoy me when they have the ability to not work and comment something like “you can’t do it” I honestly have no choice but to work and do the best I can.

It annoys me to when I see that because like you said not everyone has that privilege, and just bc you don’t have that privilege doesn’t mean you should automatically give up on your dreams. You just got to work a lil harder and that’s okay. & I’m wishing so much luck to you on your journey !!!

I don’t think people are trying to be terrible when they say that, they’re just being honest. A lot of people fail out of the program because they work. Even teachers will suggest not to work

But for the subject at hand… I literally had to quit my day job and get a job serving at a restaurant. Never worked in the food industry before but it was so necessary toward my survival in DH school.

I work full time as a patient transporter in a hospital. I currently work overnight and I’m starting hygiene school in about a month. I plan on continuing to work, but only about 2 days a week (20-24hrs/week) and during the day so I can be part time, keep my benefits, and not mess up my sleeping schedule. It’s a good job because the pay isn’t bad ($15-20) and they’re very flexible. You also get experience talking to patients and other healthcare professionals, even though it’s not a dental office. I’ve seen some people on TH-cam suggest dental office jobs but those are usually 8am-5pm type of jobs so it’s not ideal during school. Thanks for the video!

Your videos are saving my ass. I am glad you're providing this platform for guys in hygiene school. I started hygiene school last fall, and it's not easy, but I'm highly motivated. Before going to hygiene school, I got a college degree and majored in Spanish with a minor in interpreting and translating. I'm working as an interpreter at a hospital, and that has been a really flexible job with good pay. You don't need a bachelor's to interpret (maybe a 1.5 yr associate degree), so for anyone who is bilingual and has the resources and time, I highly recommend looking into it. Love this channel!

I have made the decision to switch career field out of corporate HR and fulfilling my dream of being a RDH. I have the opportunity to begin dental assistant school within a few weeks if I choose so to get started quicker. I do know assisting is not my desire but what do you think of getting started with the program and completing some coursework first to help leverage me for a DH program? Or just complete the entire assisting program then move into DH?

    • @Justchrislove

@@ferlo28 I did that exact thing, started as an assistant student but I didn’t complete the program…I attended assisting for about 6 months and applied to DH during the next selection. It helped me become introduced to the school and gave me an opportunity to meet the faculty including the hygiene director.

Wow this is crazy. I was in the Air Force as well for 7 1/2 years. I was Services. I’m currently in my final semester of Dental Hygiene School now.
I just wanted to try something outside of my comfort zone.
    I graduate in May 2022.
As you mentioned the military pays for my school and my housing as well, so I currently do not work. I am married and I have a two year old son and any parent knows that is a job in its self.
What I try to do is wake up hours ( 2 or 3 hours) before my family is up so I can first get my mind together and next just some studying out of the way.
Also, when I am studying at home I try to give my husband a break so my son is with me as I’m studying. I give him some snacks play his videos, and I study for a few hours or complete some homework.
This doesn’t always work, but I’m learning I have to have a flexible mindset.

I have to take the slower path as I have 4 little kids and bills to pay....Any advice on these 2 careers???? Is it possible to work 3 days while in DH school??? How is it like being a male and in dental field as DH or assistant??? If I study for a year or so before DH school will it help alot so I can work...What are the prerequisites and how likely is it that you can get carpal tunnel syndrome???

    • @Lastdayone
      @Lastdayone 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

A dental assistant works with the Dentist. Whilst the Hygienist works independently. The scope is not the same. If you desire to become a Dentist, I’d encourage the DA route. If you would rather focus on the health of the patient and educate them on cleaning practices, DH would be more of your speed. Also DH are paid more than an assistant.
