I needed this.. I’m a junior in my program and it only gets more advanced so hearing that you struggled as well and seeing where you are today is just the motivation I needed! I truly appreciate you.. there’s light at the end of the tunnel☀️

Thank you so much for making this video! I am just completing my first semester, and boy is it tough. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. The stress is unbearable, everyday I want to quit....but I won't bc it is what I want to do. I feel so inadequate even though I make good grades most of the time. This is a completely new field for me, I have no background in dentistry.
I am so exhausted, I can hardly think most of the time. I feel like a zombie. I am currently taking this program at a private school, TCDH.

hi! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I was reading through the comments and I saw that you went to Toronto College of Dental Hygiene. I am choosing between 3 colleges including that one because I am also from Toronto, but I saw many bad reviews about every college that I searched. I guess my questions would be, is it hard to get into the program even if you meet all the pre-requisites? and how would you say was the experience in your college? and how hard was it to find a job after graduating? sorry for all these questions!!

As a dental assistant, I've been weighing the pros and cons of possibly going into dental hygiene in the future; out of curiosity, did you find that being an assistant beforehand helped give you a bit of a leg up on becoming a hygienist, or did you find that benefit to be relatively minimal?

I would recommend you try to become a Dental assistant first. It’s a trade and some of the programs are short enough to where it’s only 16 weeks and it’s not super expensive (typically $1000-$4000). That will give you at least the experience and it will help you decide if you want to go forward and pursue becoming a dental hygienist.

I'm not who you were asking, but I'm a high school student also thinking about pursuing a career in dental hygiene. For me, teeth have always interested me. I never hated going to the dentist, and I was curious what was happening in my mouth during the appointment. Also, it seems like a well-paying and balanced work-life type career, which is my main goal. The main reason however, is that a dental assistant and teacher visited my school to talk about careers in dentistry and it just seemed pretty cool to me. That's just my take though, hope you work it out and find something you love :)

    • @dentalelle

That’s great! It depends on what dental hygiene program you want to attend. For example, I went to a private school, and I did have to take an entrance exam for English, sciences, things like that. I find that hard to prepare for you just had to know it. But you could review those things online, but I just went in and did the best I could and ended up passing :-)

I'm an RDH for over 30 years, with 10 years as adjunct clinical faculty. I would like to add one thing that might help put things in perspective for the students.
At the end of your formal education you are going to have a degree. They will hand you a diploma that says so. However, that degree is not worth the paper it is printed on if you can't pass your national or clinical boards.
The reason is simple: The board examiners don't care. They don't care how hard you worked in school. They don't care about the endless hours of study. They don't care about how many nights you gave up being with friends and family. They don't care about what you sacrificed to be there. All they care about is what you can show them you can do right now, right here.
Your faculty, on the other hand, do care. We care so much that we are going to push you to be as prepared and excellent as you can be. We take it very personal when a student fails their national or clinical boards. It means we failed you. It means we didn't drive you hard enough.
Please keep this in mind. We know how hard it is. We also know you are capable of success in your goal to be a dental hygienist. Otherwise, you would not have been selected while others were rejected. Trust us and know we are working to help you attain your goals.
