All these games are considered to be in leagues of their own. Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Monster Hunter World and Rise.. list goes on.
I haven't played the game yet, but actually thought the instruments were sort of "assigned" to certain characters, because I ALWAYS see this arrangement in videos.
Gale canonically owns a flute (and, hopefully without spoiling too much for those who haven't played, it only appears in his inventory if something bad happens to him). One of Astarion's selection voice lines he says "~the danse macabre~" and can eventually learn a special spell called "The Danse Macabre" (if you give him a certain item) so violin is very fitting. :)
The most precarious of all instruments, just try to do a whole song flawless at full blast ...stuff of nightmares. There is a reason why world is filled with whistlers but only the tiniest fraction of them ever do it professionally.

For me, it's probably playing Bard, killing an enemy with your attack on your turn, then busting out your instrument to start playing it over the enemy's corpse as a way to end your turn.
Hehehe I was fighting the Shar surgeon undead guy and the final enemy, one of the sisters, slipped and fell on ice on her turn with 1 HP left. The only choice was to end her misery with a vicious mockery. Perfect gameplay
I played a paladin so I usually skipped the naughty and illegal stuff 😭. The next playthrough I'm gonna play as an oathbreaker and will enjoy causing mischief everywhere I go 😂.
If you're willing to let your bard get hurt and you're gonna START a fight outside of a cut scene... I like to put down a glyph of warding, have my bard stand in the middle, play a song, and then have Astarion shoot someone thus aggro-ing the enemy.
I remember the lore stating that they have art like this, but since they have an evolved psionic sense, that their music and such is completely different from what we would imagine.

I absolutely LOVE the detail of how their body movement is reflective of the energy of the piece. Pizzicato and happy? Let's VIBE. Reflective and slightly broody? Let's slow it down a notch. SO COOL.
I think Astarion definitely plays violin, or piano. Gale absolutely plays the flute because iykyk lol. Pre-fixed engine Karlach sings or whistler since she would just burn whatever instrument she'd be pkaying. Post engine-fix Karlach would play the lute I think. A hearty instrument for a hearty gal! Shart is a lyre. And Bae'zel the drum. Wyll dances for evwryone whole they play, and Tav does whatever. Durge is off eating roasted dwarf thighs or something
It was really clever of them to create a full orchestral version first and then use each track separately for whatever instrument is being used by the player. That way npcs can join in seamlessly and it will always sound good no matter what instrument they're playing.
*sigh* I remember the first time I realized my bard could jump in and jam with random musicians you run into. Yet another reminder that even the little details like this are better than the best thing in Starfield. I think we are going to look back on this game in 20 years and still not believe how much love was put into it.
Played the mass effect trilogy for the first time not long ago and was surprised how much detail went into that game, it reminded me a lot of bg3, but especially impressive because it's like 10 years older than bg3.

It's really cool how all the pitched instruments can play the melody if solo or fit in background or counter melody roles with other instruments. As a musician irl it's like a whole little side game discovering all the different parts and arrangements. It is a little disappointing it seems like flute and violin will always trade off on the melody if you do a full band but that's a nitpick at this point. Thank you Larian!
Everytime i see a bard playing i take the violine and start playing aside of him. The npc do ofc react and you perform to together. Cant tell you how much i love that fact! Things you never see in Major Studio AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Game
I thought once that some of the Songs felt rather empty, that they were kind of disjointed and had open spots that seemed to slow the pace of the song or just had only a basic rhythm to them that only kept a beat and nothing more. This was why, because they're a part of a greater whole. And that, is simply amazing game design.

You're actually missing *one* crucial instrument. Volo's whistle. He only does it during the camp party after you save the tieflings from the goblin camp in Act 1.
Any musically proficient character can do it by unequipping their instrument. They’re also missing parts too, doubling up on lyre and lute in different songs results in them playing different parts
I don't know why, but "Old Time Battles" has always been my favorite out of all these. It's the type of song if I heard in a bar or a tavern, I'd be like "Yeah, THIS is my kind of place!"
Considering the build variety with bards now I wanna do a full bard band for a playthrough I feel like it would be super fun but also make the game super easy considering they could all run around with spirit guardians, counter spell, and any giant aoes they want

Schadowheart discovered her love for music and I think this kickstarted a future career in the fine arts for her. Gale is a bit extra, like always. Lae'zel doesn't really want to be there but was peer pressured into it and tries really hard to look like she's not enjoying it. And Astarion only took the center stage because who the fuck else would show them how it's done? Ah and Wyll? I don't know... He's probably drunk back in the camp. Like always.

You can also whistle when performing by unequipping your instrument. Often times, it's just nice to whistle.

Not only do the instruments complement each other beautifully, outside of the drums, they pretty much all sound good as a solo.
The most unrealistic part of this is Gale and Astarion actually taking turns between playing the background notes and playing the main melody
It's so funny that in modern interpretations, most people would agree that Shadowheart would play the bass.
She's edgy like that. Love that for her.
