    I've just ordered one of those torch cleaning kits (23 piece) off of ali for £5.60 ($7.08).
    I'm happy with that. The 14 piece kit was a bit cheaper but I went for the one with more files because I have guitars and an electric bass, and I might use them to mess about with making stuff out of brass sheets.
    Edit: I also ordered a proper nut file

    Pretty guitar! I’ve recently gotten a PRS McCarty 594. It’s an 800 dollar guitar. The G string binds even though I’ve lubricated it properly. I can tune to pitch and it goes flat after I play it. I give the headstock a little pull and it returns to pitch but it doesn’t last. Lube is essential on all contact points. Pencil lead has been my go to for decades but recently I’ve been using sewing machine oil. I like it. It’s clean. Just don’t let it drip down at the nut seat.

    I bought one of these sold as a nut file set. Due to me being a newbie at messing with guitar setups and due to what I was trying to do, new blank nut installation, I was extremely disappointed. They are not terrible for that final fine work for sure though.
    I did get an inexpensive file set and found that they were labelled wrong. They worked OK but were leaps and bounds ahead of the torch tool.

      Ya, the torch tool is only good for fine tuning things. Useless on a blank.

    Those are mase of very soft metal which gets grownd down quickly. If you own a Dremel and a caliper you may make your own file substitutes out of sewing needles, or paper knife blades. Just make the notches and good to go.

    @jameshenz1780 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Those are only good for rounding the bottom of slot.

    What is your opinion of using the string as a file method? I think it might be the least problematic especially for someone inexperienced in doing guitar set up adjustments.

    • @techtips1064
      @techtips1064  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would only work on the lower "wound" strings. The smooth higher strings wouldn't do a thing.

      You can try using sewing needles of proper gauges. You will need to make notches on them with a file or Dremel to make them serrated. Or, for the higher strings a paper knife/utility knife will also do. Just make the blade serrated for the thinnest strings, and for thicker ones create a rounder edge shape with a Dremel or hand tools and then make it serrated.

    Would these work for filing a metal bridge slot on an electric guitar?

    • @techtips1064
      @techtips1064  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. They wouldn't touch hard metal. Soft metal and plastic only.

    Gretsch needs to spend more time cutting the nut. I have a 5230T that's a good guitar but the nut was awful when I got it. It had some other problems, too. A student of mine has a Jet with a bad nut, too. I'm watching some videos as a refresher before I fix hers.

      Fender too. Took me a year to get two 'Pro' models down to a proper playable action. Factory nut on a Pro II Strat was so high a capo couldn't close the gap at the first position.

    I have the wood color version of this guitar. I've had minor tuning issues with mine and considered replacing the tuners. Do you know what tuners that I could replace them with that wouldn't require drilling and such and would be drop in and go? I really wanted to do the floating trapeze bridge on it, but got overwhelmed thinking about it.

    • @techtips1064
      @techtips1064  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea what would fit as a "drop in". I do have one with that finish on order and I will be changing the tuners in it just to do a color change. Going all gold on that one and will be changing to a trapeze tail piece as well. The current one is not getting tuners as I don't find them all that bad. Just guessing (and hoping) they are a fairly standard size and style.

    • @techtips1064
      @techtips1064  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update. I changed the tuners on my new one and the Grovers were a perfect "drop in" part. They are one of the most common brands with a good reputation. I did a video of the swap if you are interested.

    • @Thoracius

      Why do you think the tuners are to blame for the tuning issues?

      It came with the P90 that I love and a humbucker that they call the Broadtron that sucks. I changed it to a Filtertron HS. I did videos on the process and talked about it. My second one sounded even worse, but the guitars are worth the work.

    Got any idea how hard it is to do that with tip cleaners ? Almost impossible . No good for slotting a nut from the beginning . If you want proper hand made nuts , get a good set of files .

    • @techtips1064
      @techtips1064  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would agree. Starting from the beginning wouldn't work, but to make small adjustments without taking too much off, they work great and are much cheaper than the tools they sell you for guitars.

    Never tune the guitar when it’s flat!!!! Gravity will pull it out of tune and give you a wrong reading!!

    • @maplebones
      @maplebones 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nonsense. Gravity is acting on the string no matter which way it's sitting. Is this a guitarist prank, like asking someone to go find a left handed screwdriver ? j
