The movies was a mess. the first movie was one of my favorites from DC.. but.. my god.. they fucked up big time
Patty was the only one who fucked it up... she was lead writer this time, and that was a mistake and she was the sole person to have responsibility for all this films flaws, direction is fine, but this is the key difference to the first film where she was only co writer aka on the side doing very little in the writing role.

Maxwell Lord a good villain? No. Hardly complex. Comedic villain?
CGI is becoming a replacement, not a supplement. This is a major flaw. Films from the 80s like Carpenter's The Thing still look palpably real by today's standards. In fact, the 90's creature feature Tremors looks incredibly believable. This is because they largely relied on physical effects. Say what you like about Tarantino; the man abstains from CGI and, as a result, his cinematic output will never date. This will. Actually, it already has. If its looks like CGI and it walks and quacks like CGI, then it's the kind
of duck you shouldn't have in your movie. A game, sure, but not a movie. A real Marvel would be a filmmaker willing to know the difference and an audience to do the same.
I haven't watched a new film since I saw Terminator Salvation in about 2009 in the cinema (not saying it was bad, I thought it was good). I just gave up completely with the new stuff in the cinema and on TV and rely on the amount of old films that have been made. I think they've just become too gritty, CGI is no longer impressive and the amount of colour filtering (brown / blue) irritates me. I watched the 1981 "The Thing" over Christmas, I don't care about visual realism, CGI just doesn't grip me as being amazing anymore, everyone knows these things are created on computers now (not as in 'that looks amazing' to 'those computer graphics look amazing'), and how far can you take this without it becoming boring.

Just take a look at the recent teaser for Ghostbusters Afterlife with the mini marshmallow men. Gawd awful. Ghostbusters will never catch lightening in a bottle like the original. It was a perfect mix of cast, dialogue, music and practical sfx.
Tarantino use cgi cows in Inglorious Bastards and look super terrible. The dummy in Death proof is not cgi and already age badly.
@@Karifi Physical effects will always trump CGI, particularly in terms of egregious violence. Creature's that are predominantly CGI look as if they are lacking personality and tangible "realism"- the magic of making the unreal seem real. As for Death Proof, I'm glad Tarantino refused to cut budget costs and go down the path of CGI, particularly then when CGI could not give that palpable sense of looking less computer generated. Cows! Seriously? The whole film relied on physical effects, including fire, scalpings, beatings and brutal deaths. Sorry, but CGI has rarely yielded enduring, effective results. Just look at Carpenter's original The Thing! The effects still hold up. Look ar the woeful remake: it's all CGI and it looks like an antiquated play station game.

Every time I see Kristen Wiig in the trailer, I immediately think of Jim Carey as the Riddler in Batman Forever.

Kristen Wiig's character seems similar to Halle Berry's character in Catwoman, and not just because they're both morally ambiguous feline super people. The shy frumpy office girl who looks as natural at it as the girl from She's All That is a bit played out, especially considering we're bound to see it again in the She-Hulk show.
Also Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns.
Wiig’s frumpy office girl is the type of character Diana needs to adapt to so that she doesn’t draw attention. She’s not exactly keeping a low profile stepping out of cars with a dress just a centimeter away from showing her crotch.
pretty weak review mate. where the analysis of the film? you just picked up a few points here and there.. this movie basically has a ridiculous far fetched plot... even for the world of super hero movies.. where wonderwoman 1 was grounded in the gritty reality of WW1 which created a great contrast to the world of themyscera and wonder woman herself.. and only shat the bed in the final act.. this movie is pretty much nuts from the off.. due to the wish making stone.. whoe rules seem to be pretty inconsistent. its 150 minutes long with about 7 minutes of action and no final battle.. maybe patty was so conscious of the crap first movie ending she went the opposite way. she didnt want a fist fight.. so you get cheetah and WW doing some trapeze artist moves for about 90 seconds before cheetah, the apex predator is taken out very tamely... and then ww makes some cheesy statement about heart and truth blah blah.. but lord is free now? and so is cheetah? and erm everyone jsut goes on with their lives? ww was a grounded movie which at its core was the story of diana and steve... the plot device brings steve back but it feels as unnatural as it is in the movie for him to be there... its a long movie with not much action... an over the top plot which isnt consistent, and the peformances are cheesy. diana worked better as the poweful stranger but completely newbie in a new world in ww1. now shes the wordly woman slighlty full of it and patronising. and so there isnt really as much heart in this movie.. so youre left with a silly story which you dont really care about.

Not only that they say that the wish brings consequences to the wosher. Wiggs got everything she asked for and zero consequences. Plus theres soo many Trump reference, he has all the power in the world. But wants to be President?
I really liked the first movie and had really high hopes. I couldn't even get watch through the first hour. It just fucking sucked overall. Plot took about 40 minutes to even be introduced, had pointless long drawn out scenes that didn't do anything for the story and the writing was straight up terrible. This was the one thing DC cinema had going for them and they failed miserably.
I agree this movie completely sucks. Why in the world is Oliver ignoring the garbage plot and inconsistencies throughout the entire movie beginning to end.

Sorry, this film was a mess and seemed to be written by a committee driven by hitting certain emotional and political points without earning them. Don't get me wrong, I REALLY enjoyed the beginning as a film where the women were front and centre as protagonists but then it just fell apart and didn't seem to know what it was and then came across as a cynical cash-grab for a certain demographic without doing anything. It ended up mawkish and plain silly as I think the DC superhero universe is inherently that (where Marvel is more sophisticated but can still be fun and internally logical).
Mind plowing how bad this movie was. I hated it and loved the first one.

Oliver not sure what film you saw, but "the eefects are good" and Gadot "is a good actress" ? Comon , I was expecting more , and I'm sorry to say but this movie is pure trash, nothing artistic to it, plot makes no sense, convoluted etc , I dont even want to bother commenting on it any further
If your looking for an action filled superhero movie, you’re not gonna get it... which was my expectation.. for me, many of the scenes we unnecessarily long and there was sooo much exposition and convenient plot holes.. it’s like the writers just expect the audience to accept everything that happens without question.. I wanted to see an awesome cheetah fight, but you could barely see what’s happening and it was really short... and seeing WW so hung up over a man became soooooo annoying! I can’t stand to hear about Steve Trevor in any DC movie.. EVER!
Again if you’re looking for an action filled superhero movie... forget it.. but the movie is beautifully shot.. just don’t go in with any expectations

There could have been more action (or rather they could have tightened up the slower parts) but the action that was in there was pretty fire. The truck caravan sequence was awesome.
The music's also breathtaking superhero stuff.

Yep, I was expecting the Trump comparison but as mentioned in the video - he was more Lex Luthor and the relationship with his son and a glimpse into his past made Maxwell Lord quite a sympathetic character. Not some evil megalomaniac- just a man who'd failed in his life and was corrupted by power.

The opening and it's tone reminded me somewhat of Superman 3. It's like Jenkins made WW1 in the manner of Donner and WW2 in the manner of Lester. While the story and the heroine, villainess rivalry seemed like it came out of Supergirl (1984)
What tremendous difference in Movies, between the 1st and 2nd one. I was almost like two different writers and directors...
because it was, at least in the written part, Patty Jenkins wrote and directed WW84, while the first WW Jenkins only directed.
Still would like to know what Diana was doing between the end of World War I and 1984. That’s not something you can brush off when you’re dealing with an immortal character. She’s not exactly keeping a low profile like Wolverine did while she’s working for a world renowned museum and showing up to events dressing sexy. At least the TV show kept the whole glasses charade that they decided to toss out the window in the first movie.
Plus it’s very confusing with the pre-established continuity of her character in the previous films. I’ve heard that they’re already trying to wipe out Batman v. Superman and Justice League because it largely contradicts what Jenkins wants to do. It also doesn’t help that Snyder’s Justice League is coming in March.
Probably the most disappointing movie of the year, Tenet was flawed but it wasn’t insulting like this, Patty’s directing was awesome (as usual) and I’m excited for her Star Wars movie but her writing for 84 was awful, the story and character development was a complete joke and like a lazy mashup of Superman 1978 and Batman Forever (1995), Wigg and Pascal were severally underused and their characters were hollow stereotypes, the fact that Wonder Woman can go from the first movie (which was acclaimed) to this is a complete joke
I'm happy for Pedro Pascal that his career has taken off so well since his 2014 guest role on Game of Thrones. From all accounts he seems to be a genuinely cool guy and has charisma to spare.
From his tweets he seems like a toxic asshole.

I think you were overly kind to this movie. I adore the first one but this was a mess. I thought Pedro Pascal was over the top and terrible. Never funny and never moving. The film needed him cut entirely, so we could get WAY more Barbara/Cheetah.

I was really disappointed by this movie. Easily one of the worst movies of 2020. The plot was just a plodding mess and tonally was all over the place.

I was getting some real SUPERMAN III vibes rather than SUPERMAN II...right down to the mall opening feeling as silly as the Streets of Metropolis opening, Pedro Pascal as a parallel Robert Vaughn and even a plot involving oil. Or maybe it's fairer to go with a combination of the two.
But great minds think alike. Good to see we were both feeling Christopher Reeve Superman sequel either way 👍
Just seen WW84 and I enjoyed it, the film has a good heart and Pedro's Pascal's Maxell Lord is quite a complicated character - not necessary evil just corrupted by power and quite a tragic figure as we find out about him. Thought Pedro played his part well as did all the main characters.
His motive basically never made sense, except in the beginning. He wants his business to be successful. K. Then he just wants everyone to wish for stuff again and again because...............? He's clearing screwing everything up, which doesn't benefit him very much...? He doesn't seem to have any intentions of screwing up the world or being bad beyond his own personal reasons... Later we find he's sort of trying to cancel the negative effects of the wishes, but he overlooks what he lost from HIS wish so that doesn't even make sense.. also wishes seem to hurt him because..... well, because?
The movie was terrible. The fight scene at the end with Cheetah was hilariously awful.
Worse then anything in the Halle Berry Catwoman

Sorry, this movie was just not that good. Cheetah looks ike a member of the Cats cast. The story is just a bunch a garbled mess. I wish it were better, but it wasn't. Also so I guess everyone remembered what happened at the end? That is a bad wrap-up to this story and created a mess for future films.

I just went to see it in Norwich today (ODEON) and the cinema was good. Booked online so everything was nice and easy, would recommend you do the same thing.

I really liked it. It’s not the massive scale of something like infinity war. But it’s got a really nice message. Maxwell Lord is awesome, love the suits.

I was so hyped for this movie when it was announced at the beginning of 2020 and it said it would be released in May. But it then kept being pushed back and back again and again. Now it won't be released in Canada until February or March of 2021 and I couldn't care a less about it.

Wow, the timing has to be just right for you to like a movie. Who cares if you see in now or in a few months, Im Canadian and I will be happy to see it in theaters whenever they release it.
It will be released on digital video on demand here in Canada on December 25th.. maybe down the road once the theaters are open they will release it there

I heard from another reviewer that WW84 is good but the bad guys really don't seem like a challenge to her, one of the reasons I never got into WW comics is because her rogue gallery is weak.
If I'm correct I did see her swinging on a lightning bolt with her lasso...how in blazes is Cheetah supposed to compete with that?
the first movie wasn't bad, but couldn't stand the main star of the film. besides dude, for me, Lynda Carter was (and still "IS") the true Wonder Woman (as I grew up watching reruns of the old TV series as a kid)

And while I might receive flak for this next comment, i'm not gonna hold back, as I couldn't stand Gal Gadot's performance whenever she popped up onscreen. the first time I watched the movie, I didn't think too much of it (though Lynda Carter should've appeared in the movie somewhere though). but on the 2nd viewing? she annoyed the living hell out of me

What a terrible movie. There were so many issues with it. When the after credits cameo was the best part of this you know your film is a piece of crap. Seriously, it made me like Justice League. And I hated that movie. This was such a let down compared to the first WW film.

The cgi was veryyyyy questionable. I noticed it looked better than even the first movie
Looking forward to it. My only real issue with the first film were the villains were a bit weak. Danny Houston's German villain was cartoony and over the top, while David Thewlis' Ares was uninspiring. I think what elevates a mid tier super hero movies to something great a lot of the times is actually the villain, so I'm excited to see Pedro Pascal act instead of being relegated to dub work in the space cowboy show. (Not that his dub work is bad in that show, but we don't really get to see him act much)

Biggest critique I have about the movie was I was the most invested in Barbara and Diana's relationship before she became Cheetah because that is where the movie really shines for me. I would much rather have had a very small stakes character driven story just about Diana trying to save her friend who was being consumed by envy over how Wonder Woman was this perfect super woman given everything while Barbara was the only always getting trampled over by life and now that Barbara was given the chance to become like Diana thanks to some magical macguffin metaphor for addiction, which is slowly turning her into a monster and yet Diana refuses to give up on Barbara. And Diana is on her own arc about her questioning herself, something about do monsters reflect our own flaws so is Cheetah the worst of Diana’s personality personified?
have Diana and Barbara have some kind of "platonic love" for the other in the sense they just really gel together in that special way best friends do. And how Diana “defeats” Barbara is by losing and Barbara chooses to give up being Cheetah to save Diana because she loves her.
And also I would set it in modern day, didn’t need the 1980s. And I would have done Cheetah as practical as possible, minimal CGI.
And finally, not 2:30 hours long.
So is Kristen Wig’s character basically Aldrich Killian from Iron Man 3?

I’ve heard Patty wants the third film to have Diana once again working with Batman and Superman, hopefully it will be a more fitting Trinity film and NOT an insult like BvS...

I view the lack of 80's nostalgia as a minus point for the film. I like the 80's presented in pop culture, the music and the bright colors. Makes it the perfect setting for a superhero movie IMHO.
Atleast they could have used Blue Monday from the trailer aswell.

Released in both open theaters and home is fair, so theaters belly aching about it during a pandemic comes off wrongheaded. It's not a streaming only thing. Directors are kinda putting me off on seeing their art when they say only see in the theater, but don't really say, if the health of your experience isn't guaranteed.

@@muznick But for the the limitations I make on where I go, a theater is a luxury item vs grocery store. Even stores have delivery options outside of going to the store. And streaming is the viable alternative to an enclosed theater with suspect audience adherence to health regulations. Directors seem to think that just because a theater is open that they are entitled to an audience filling said theater to watch movies.
I didn't feel the need to see the first film. I will skip this one too.

It doesn't come out for another week here in the U.S. I have to wait until next week to see it, and I plan to see it in theaters
A terrible and incoherent movie. Yes it has Superman 2 vibes with Diana giving up her powers for her love and the flying scenes but it had none of the charm or wit from Superman. Though in the end it was more Batman Forever than Superman 2. It was badly directed, the story too stretched out and the action scenes were laughable at best. The worst thing was for a movie set in the 80's it didnt have an 80's music or any nostalgia at all. Why set this film in 1984 at all? The movie score itself was bland and forgettable. A complete mess.

So, not the worst superhero film, but it is an AWFUL movie. Thinnest plot. Characters written by 9 year olds. Just soundly a bad movie, imo.

Good movie, only one thing felt out of place to me and that was the Jet flight thru the fireworks. It felt too forced to be emotional and it delivered nothing. Other than that it was a solid movie that felt fresh and not a rehash or a knock off of any other super hero movie.
Thankfully, was able to see it at the local Vue cinema in Bedford, but had to see it on the Friday evening after my cleaning shift, since I was told that cinema was shutting down for two weeks on the Saturday, when I wanted to see it, but at least I got to see it. Really decent movie, not quite as great as the original, but that doesn't matter, it's really well done and I loved the eighties setting. It isn't rammed down your throat, but it is there to see and it's a fond remembrance to a quite glorious time for clothes, music, culture, movies and everything else. It really adds to the fun. I'm sure it will still be showing when cinemas reopen. When they do, do yourselves a favour and check it out. It's well worth it. I am definitely going to see it again if and when I get a chance, and I would get it on blu ray.

This movie is like Superman 3. Some flaws yes, but Gal was amazing as WW and that is enough for me to at least enjoy it! Superman 3 has problems but Chris Reeve is so good and sells it in the end. At worst this movie is a 6/10 at best an 8/10. People saying its 3 or 2 - like really? Have you seen bad movies? What are you comparing too? Saying its not as good as the first one applies to a shit load of movies, so that's not really an argument. For me, WW herself was so awesome that I was sold on it. It's not 10/10 but not every movie needs to be a 10/10 or a 2/10. 7-8/10 is still solid entertainment.
I really don't see how WB will keep profits healthy with the TV streaming launch meaning that this movie will be available for free on the high seas in HD from day one.

The final death nail to 2020, Wonder Woman 84...
1) Rather then having STEVE TREVOR return as a ghost with no physical body, he possesses the body of a random dude. Why bring him back? (im going to gloss over the fact consent wasn't given to Wonder Woman to "boom boom" by the guy possessed.) Why was Steve Trevor the one to convince WW she had to let him go? WW doesn't make the sacrificial choice.. (personal sacrifice for the greater good.) He makes that decision, not her. We did the fish out of water story already, why retread?
2)BARBRA /CHEETAH, horrible motivation, bad CGI, bad make-up effects. Disappointing "final fight".
3)MAXWELL LORENZANO "Aka the WISHMASTER". Knows about the wishing rock,....(somehow)... terrible powers, that were not consistent. Granting (A) wish, then denying a second wish, (cause he can't grant TWO wishes to the same person???), then granting a second wish to someone (cause the script needs him too), needs physical contact with the wisher, then not needing physical contact with the wisher... SOME people on the internet are comparing Maxwell to Trump, which is NOT true, ...Max ACTUALLY built a Wall...=)
4)and Finally WONDER WOMAN, fighting crime dressed as WW, rather then, oh I don't know, ANYTHING ELSE and putting on a MASK! Cause obviously she doesn't want people to know about her, (destroying cameras, winking at people "shhhh! It'll be our secret") Because you know, you have to make sense about how BRUCE WAYNE found out about her from a WW2 Photo, rather then you know, during a WORLD CHANGING EVENT?? Bruce Wayne: "Hey remember that time when peoples wishes were coming true, and there were reports of a woman kicking the Sh*t out of people during the same time.... i will NOT make any kind of connection."
5)Director, Writer... WTF were you thinking.... Why set this in 1984? Other then you seeing Captain Marvel and saying to yourself, we should do that!!!
Why do the female thieves And/Or "Bad Girls" go free/not captured and punished? (girl thieves get away from the store, shopkeeper running the Black Market gets away, Cheetah gets away.)
If Cheetah wished to be like WW, gaining her powers and more then likely her weaknesses as well, why does Cheetah pass out from being electrocuted and not WW? Even though Wonder Woman is wearing metal?(if "magic or special armor fine, but DOESNT explain why she withstood being electrocuted.)

Near the end of the film, Both Russia and the United States launch Nukes at each other, ....now, renouncing your wish, would mean the Nuke's CLOSER to Russian border wouldn't exist anymore, BUT that doesn't negate the other Nukes that EXISTED BEFORE that were launched in retaliation... the world should have been Nuked...
The Golden Armor served as nothing but a Kittie Cat scratch post, WW didn't need it to fly, she did that already, it was used to "look cool" and nothing more. Otherwise why wouldn't she have brought her shield and sword.

Your being very generous Oliver, the film is a weak follower from the first WW movie. It’s “ OK” and yes Gal Gadot of great but otherwise it’s a very average movie. DC are still a long way behind Marvel.
Thanks for the great review Oliver. Well done and the Donner Superman love shows throughout WW1984. Seen it twice in theaters and highly recommend it. I think some of the bad press is coming from when the film was released, right in the middle of COVID. The film covers a tumultuous story where chaos reigns at points, which may lead to people not wanting to see it or having an averse reaction to the screening. Nonetheless, 4 out 4 stars for me. Might even see it again. Love the 1980s.
Guys the 80s nostalgia has expired. In fact for a great many of us not yet born to experience this time, it wasn't there in the first place. Stop reminding us of it. Rehashing that period in its so called glory also ignores the many other issues and experiences of people who didn't enjoy this non existent utopia.

Um ,that can be said about every comic book movie, at this point.
Also they could done the 80's setting better even without using popular music from the period like they did in Robocop and The Dark Knight Returns/Watchmen using commercials and political commentary from the period. The potential here was huge and instead they went with bum bags and Wall Street for some reason. Really wasted potential.
