As much as people hate on the sequels, at least the original trilogy as a whole had the same production values and aesthetics. This film has an over-reliance on shaky cam to hide a lack of choreography, along with oversaturated color grading and CGI effects that look like Speed Racer without the self-awareness. It felt more like a fan film than an actual installment to the franchise. The disconnect in how it looked and feel just made it impossible for me to believe that I was watching a movie that took place in the same world as the others.

    • @tylerdordon99

It felt like some youtube movie enthusiasts made a full length film with a shitty camera. It just looked visually flat.
The original trilogy and older films in general looked way better than most major productions today. The set design in The Matrix trilogy is a character in itself. Have filmmakers forgotten how to make good looking films or just movies that look like movies and not a canceled tv pilot from the early 2000s.

Anyone making points about stagnation of culture and creativity never dug deeper than the most marketed mainstream that is just there without looking twice. Most of the creativity goes to low-to-mid budget since both of those now could be self-sustainable. Heck, directors are actively switching towards that because they try avoid being creatively bankrupt. You know that stereotypical 'who still gives them money to do that' crap that almost always gives away that people don't know how the system works? In case of, for example, M. Night Shyamalan most of his movies are pretty much self-fincanced. He mortgaged his home at least twice to make The Visit and Glass, upon which Blumhouse and Universal started giving him mid-tier budgets for production because he usually makes profit on what is very cheap. You frankly even don't need a studio to make a film and follow it up with another good film and just carry on. You need a steady niche. It's no longer an anomaly like Quentin Tarantino, it's just a way many directors choose over ever being screwed up by a studio.
Also every frigging decade has a ton of hidden gems that managed to completely fall into the cracks being overshadowed by flashy mainstream releases (sometimes also being them). You know what I've been saying since I was in school? That most good movies need finding. Heck, we're at the point of mediocrity overflow of such proportions that actually bad movies need finding, too.

I REALLY like 2 and 3. Especially Reloaded. I wanted a new Matrix movie SO BAD for 18 years. EXTREMELY disappointed with what we got. I feel like no one involved with the film took it seriously enough and it feels really disrespectful to the fans. Really felt like a half-ass attempt. The story ideas were good but there was no real urgency. No real reason to get Neo back out of the Matrix. They wanted to get him out. Just cause. He’s Neo. So……
I feel like the reason the wanted to get Neo out was to free more minds cause Niobi lost her interest in freeing minds but nothing was ever clearly enough stated.
And the almost complete lack of martial arts was TOTALLY unforgivable. The quick action cuts were terrible. Anytime an action movie does this I hate it and to get that from a Matrix movie is absolutely sad.
I want another Matrix movie. But I want one done with the proper seriousness and respect that we got with the original trilogy. Resurrections was the most disappointing movie experience of my life. Yes ever more disappointing than the Star Wars prequels. So so sad. I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Matrix franchise. Can not overstate my disappointment enough.

There were far too many callbacks as well. Some shots were just lifted straight from the original film, and it was all just a bit stale and bloated. Some very interesting ideas, and that's it's strong point, but it was all poorly executed, and it felt like a TV level reboot of the entire concept.

This movie is a prime example of when you only have a fourth of a creative team return for one of these retools. I’m not fond how there’s been a severe lack of acknowledgment to the contributions of producer Joel Silver on this series. He’s the one who took a chance on the Wachowskis for the first one. A recent interview on the 4K V for Vendetta Blu-ray had Lana Wachowski gloat too much of that film’s success and recalled how someone asked her after it premiered how she was able to convince Warners to make such a controversial movie. The answer is simply that it was a successful graphic novel by Alan Moore that had been optioned by Silver about a decade before the Wachowskis got involved with it.

  • @TechnicalGamingChannel
    @TechnicalGamingChannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think the biggest problem with The Matrix sequels is that the original movie was so groundbreaking, influential, and well executed that ANYTHING is going to pale in comparison. I thoroughly enjoyed Resurrections except for some of the action sequences and I think it's very obvious that the production issues caused by COVID had a major impact on both the cinemtography and choreography throughout the film. Some of the action is phenomenal like when Neo and Smith fight, the pagoda scene, etc. But then other action moments fall flat. Seems like they just didn't have enough time to plan and execute big stunts, so they used quick edits and tight camera work to hide things that the previous movies would have showed.
A big issue I had that you also raised was the lack of meaningful stakes. As far as I can recall none of the primary or secondary cast dies. The prior Matrix movies pulled no punches when it came to killing off characters, but Resurections avoids killing off characters that arguably would have served the story better if they had died.
All that said, I still think Resurrections tells the most effective story since the first film and it almost felt like more of a narrative sequel to the original versus a followup to 2 and 3. The way Trinity and Neo meet and ultimately end up was incredibly emotional for me as a fan of the original film because it finally felt like a Matrix movie regarded their relationship with real gravity instead of as two sex icons on the cover of a magazine.
The only story element I wasn't so fond of was Niobe's. I liked the Zion 2.0 angle and all the new developments with the machines and humans coexisting was wonderful and a great nod to the Animatrix. But Jada Pinket Smith felt like someone acting under a layer of makeup that didn't need to be there delivering dialog we could infer through the visual storytelling. I thought it would have been way more effective to just have the various captains serve as the leaders of the new human city and have some dissent among them as to Neo's role instead of resting that burden on Niobe's shoulders.
Really I just think people are being harsh because they view the Matrix franchise as action blockbusters. That's a fair expectation given the franchise's past and it's clear they attempted and failed to deliver on that expectation. But nearly everything else about the film was a marked improvement over 2 and 3, especially when it comes to Neo and Trinity's story together. Like just think back to the rave scene or Neo yanking a bullet out of Trinity... those scenes were so superfical feeling compared to their interaction in Resurrections. To me, that's what made the whole movie worthwhile. Seeing two characters finally getting closure on a past that left us feeling robbed was great, even if some other parts of the movie didn't live up to expectations.

  • @ClintonOrtiz
    @ClintonOrtiz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Because both Neo and Trinity died at the end of the trilogy, Resurrections needed to open showing more of their resurrection by the machines. Similarly, a more fleshed-out depiction of the 'Machine civil war' that happened between Revolutions and Resurrections would have added the much-needed context that the current film was so obviously lacking. Not having more of the original actors or its original darker cyberpunk feel to instead replace it with a campy atmosphere throughout, led to that feeling we're all having over what was a landmark example of film making turned corporate mess, the very thing the original film stood against. Heard there's a sequel. Maybe we’ll eventually discover the entire Resurrections film was just another one of Neo’s dreams from safe within his pod. That would explain the disjointed, dream-like campy theme to Resurrections and allow the next film to be the real Matrix outside of the modal that was created not by Neo, but the (original) Architect. The line in Resurrections where Neo says "I've had dreams that weren't just dreams," as well as what the Analyst tells him about his current "reality" are strong clues. This would also mean Lana played with all our minds. It’s WE that were in the Matrix within a Matrix in Resurrections. We dreamt Neo's dream. By the next film, I fully expect Neo to wake up from that dream to again become the One he still is, and is still becoming.

The first movie was Amazing...so much time and effort went into each detail and scene....Everyone around the world could relate to this movie whether they are atheist or religious.....It was dark and gritty..and..tho it was sci fi they worked hard to have a degree of realism...Tho fiction you could see how things inferred could happen in reality..... ..it made you think about life and.. whats after... in ways you didnt even realize there were.. The new one is terrible....they start out with the a gritty...dark...throwback action seen and gets everyone excited but then goes to this very colorful scene where they imply that neo is crazy...instead of this movie making you question things it makes you think only a crazy person would question things.....It laughs at the old movies...mocks it....I mean they took one of the most ICONIC MEMORABLE scenes from MORPHEUS and said...BLAH BLAH BLAH and mocked it....I was never scared for the characters...and the humor was terrible and just made it worse....The fight scenes were so poorly done compared to previous ones....how is this movie rated R....There was no sex...no cussing....no death....Its like they disneyfied the matrix and then made it part parody.....This could of been good...i seen what could of been...I think maybe only having one of the sisters on board is why this happened...there brilliance was there combination....
Its not just the Matrix...they did it with Jarassic Park...they took out all the Dark..bloody scary violent scenes and made it a movie for little kids....
It almost seems like Hollywood made all there movie's violent and Dark because THE RIGHT hated it....Now its flipped....The right doesnt care about violence in movies anymore so its like they are trying to just do the opposite if whatever THE RIGHT is doing....it was so sad to see this.... Also the religious parallels that were in the movie really worked...seemed like they were trying to get away from that and even mock the idea of that...made me think maybe Lana was mad Christians were liking this movie and seeing parallels and maybe mad that people were taking different meaning from the show vs what she wanted...i dont know...I know hollywood had became so disconnected from regular people...so much so that they actually thought this was good.....Hollywoods constant drive to vet rid if Guns...Fights...masculinity...is making these movies so bad and they are so disconnected that they really do not realize it...There had to be some realism in movies or it just wont work

I will tell you what the fans wanted: Not another Matrix movie. This thing that hollywood has been doing for the last decade, remakes, re-imaginations, reboots, sequels... it has got to stop. All of it is just a cash-in on nostalgia and I can think of only two films connected to prior movies/material that actually had some merit; the new Dune and the new Blade Runner (which tells me something about the genius of the director involved). The reason the original Matrix is so loved really doesn't have anything to do with the visuals. The story and characters (to most people) were fresh and portrayed a world that we had yet to learn about. No one knew Neo was supposed to be the hero. No one knew if humanity would win. Etc, etc, etc. The filmmakers could have stopped right there and things would have been fine. To contrast that I want to refer to Alien and Aliens. The first movie is a self-contained masterpiece. The second movie, instead of just being a sequel completely changed the feel and pacing, making it more into a character driven, gritty, action/thriller, which was brilliantly directed. How about I mention Moon. Basically it only ahs two characters and takes place in more or less the same set for the whole movie. Why is it good? Because it throws out a premise that is both enthralling and scary because it touches on some deep aspects of human nature. What about Memento. No one in their right mind could argue that that film was not a tour de force of filmmaking. Brilliantly acted and the now famous way in which it is portrayed played out more like a murder mystery where we discover new clues all the time, or have to disregard something that we thought we knew about what was going on as new information arrives. That film subverts expectation constantly. In a GOOD way. So where are all THESE kind of movies today? I mean do you realize how utterly infantile the "oh it was all a video game" explanation is for the trilogy? It sits right next to "oh it was all a dream" as being the epitome of bottom of the barrel writing. Just push out this crap to make a few bucks is what it is. Anyone that saw the original film and felt the deep cultural impact that it had (and still does) and that thinks this film is any good is completely brainwashed and/or deluded. It is a terrible movie in every respect and should never have been made. 3/10 at best.

It will be understood as a comedy, as a movie that trolls the studio, the critics and the audience who don't get (or appreciate) that it's a troll comedy and not a straight sequel. It will be understood as the Matrix version of that other misunderstood (at the time of release anyway) troll movie, Freddy Got Fingered.

The meta stuff got old and annoying really fast.
Another thing. The whole humans as batteries idea always seemed bogus when you consider:
    1. The machines can build and fabricate things very quickly on a massive scale, and…
    2. They can just build more rigs, drill for crude oil and make all the fossil fuels they want. They don’t give a shit about the environment anyway, so no the being able to access the sun is a non-issue.
    3. Finally, a more compelling plot would be to find a way to trick the machines into waking up in a simulation and have them believe that’s their reality. They don’t have emotions so either way, it shouldn’t matter; plus, in a manner of speaking, with modern technology, we have machines living and operating in all kinds of simulated spaces anyway. There’s a much better story in that scenario.

I can't understand all the hate from people. This was clearly approaching the characters and world from a different perspective. What I found so compelling about this film was Neo's story of being at the pinnacle and then aging, being worn down by life, not being able to perform as the person he was when he was young, and questioning himself and life. Watching him try to cope with that loss and erosion was relatable and realistic. I loved that they brought that into a "the chosen one" story and thought it was brilliantly told and acted.
I do agree that the action was sometimes painful to watch, but I saw that as another portrayal of how things have changed for Neo and the world: they weren't what they used to be, and there's some sadness in that. The overall plot in terms of character objectives was a little weak for me, as Ive never really felt chemistry between Neo and Trinity and never understood why they liked each other. And it didn't make sense that everyone would risk everything just so they could be together again. I think the strength of this movie was Neo grappling with loss, aging, and identity, and what continuing on/finding meaning in the face of those things would look like. I wish they'd continued to tell that story instead of the love story.

It wasn't horrid, and was good viewing for a family christmas. Having HBO Max it was also free to watch. I did a bit of research on the movie and why it was made, and pulled this up.
"As explained by Lana Wachowski during the Berlin International Literature Festival 2021, Warner Bros. constantly approached the Wachowskis every year to make another Matrix sequel, but the Wachowskis always declined the offers out of a lack of interest and because of their feelings that the trilogy's story had concluded. However, in 2019, Ron and Lynne Wachowski, the Wachowskis' parents, passed away alongside a close friend of Lana's, with her father passing away first, her friend second and her mother third. After not being able to process that kind of grief, Lana suddenly conceived the story of The Matrix Resurrections one sleepless night. In her words, Wachowski felt that while she couldn't have her parents back, she then could have Neo and Trinity back, feeling very comforted to see them alive again."
Maybe i'm getting soft in my old age, but it's hard to be cynical after hearing that.

Oliver is too nice. I'd be harsher, lol. I think this movie is a mess, and while comparing it to Wes Craven's New Nightmare could be a compliment, I've seen some note how similar it is to Space Jam: New Legacy, that's IS a lot closer to what we got.
    This is not ok.
Maybe it's just me, but movies being "meta" isn't always clever, and here it just makes me roll my eyes. For some reason, The Matrix franchise thinks it has to be like this all the time for the audience, but it really doesn't. The original movie had layers, but was still a straightforward story. As the sequels went on, it increasingly got up its own ass, and that what's turned off viewers. Somehow the 4th movie is this multiplied by a thousand. It's insane. Watching this after Spider-Man No Way Home really highlights how one movie does nostalgia well and the other does not. When Resurrections wasn't repeating the first film beat for beat, (but crappier), it just straight up had parts that felt like a literal clipshow. I don't know if I can say there was anything redeeming about this. Besides Jessica Henwick and snippets of intriguing ideas. A Machine Civil War seemed fascinating. Video game programmer fantasy, not so much.
Speaking of that, I was hoping you'd have a video game portion of the review and talk about that tech demo they put out, tying in with the movie.

Tired of seeing positive reviews stating that the audience either misunderstood Lana's vision and message or that she made a bad sci fi action film on purpose. Truth is, it's not layered enough to be misunderstood and intentionally making a bad film does not give the middle finger to the studio, it gi es the middle finger to the audience and the fans! This is a shame as film is a visual medium and if Lana had little to say or what she did have to say feels muddled, then maybe she should have let the studio reboot the Matrix without her
