Driving trains into Waterloo for over 2 decades, I only ever saw a handful of enthusiasts in all that time. In this video there were lots. The reason why (and my personal belief) is because in the days of steam and up until class 450's came in, it was a thoroughly interesting hobby with so many amazing varieties of traction. Nowadays it's as boring as watching eggs fry. The only thing I recognised in this video of Clapham was the overbridge and I think the shed and some sidings, other than that it's character has long gone.
Thanks for posting. This looks like autumn 1964 or summer 1965? 34033 "Chard" withdrawn Dec 65. Nice moment at 1:42 at Wimbledon, with D813 "Diadem" on the down fast and the cameraman's (Basingstoke semi-fast presumably) on the down slow, passing under Durnsford Road bridge with the flyover following.
Wow this is fabulous, precious stuff. Clapham Junction in the 80s is what I remember. It really hadn't changed THAT much in the intervening years from 60s to 80s, other than the rolling stock of course. The approach to Waterloo now is virtually unrecognisable in terms of additional buildings All those Merchant Navy Class 0:25 flying down to the coast!
First visit to London 1970, saw a class 42 "Warship" at the iconic Clapham Junction, heading to Exeter via Salisbury. A year or so later they had been replaced by class 33 "Cromptons". It is hard to believe steam into London survived into the high-rise office era.
So what was at the country end of Platform 9 & 10 looks like a water tank? I can never remember what was there until one day it was an empty space and since then I have been like what was there? On the video here, we pass platform 9 at Clapham after the over bridge heading towards London looks like a water tank?
Look at that complicated trackwork coming into Waterloo, fascinating!
Splendid old footage. Loved the Warship.
Glad you enjoyed it

An excellent reflection John on times long gone. A very atmospheric film, many thanks.

Took me back to the 1960's when skiving off school to spend the day steam locomotive trainspotting a Clapham Junction. Thanks for uploading !
Glad you enjoyed it
