I was posted in the gallery hosting the painting Sleep by Jean Bernard Restout at the Cleveland Museum of Art as a museum guard many times. I may go back again to guard. Nothing like seeing these great works in person.

You’re welcome. I can only imagine the emotional toil the fires have had on you. I’m glad you were able to “escape” and find some comfort, if only for a moment.

Dear Jeffrey I was kidnapped by this fascinating piece from the baroque french composer Desmarest who sang in the choirs of the lyric dramas from the italian Lully at the court of Louis XIV With kind regards and all the best for 2020 !! Giacomo
Lully’s Atys came first. It premiered in 1676, and Desmarest’s Circé was first performed in 1694. These sleep scenes were very common in French Baroque operas.
@@JeffreyStivers Thank you! Sleep scenes are not just French, there’s a great one in Purcell’s Fairy Queen. (Based on Midsummer Night’s Dream, which has people falling asleep all over it). In Lully’s Armide, the hero spends most of his time asleep. I’d love to know why they had this obsession with falling asleep on stage.
The sleep is often brought on by some magical event, and the hero, an otherwise strong character, becomes helpless and/or vulnerable. Plus, while sleeping there is the possibility of that character dreaming. It also presents the option for distinctive orchestration.
One of the best channels in TH-cam, thanks to you, we can learn and share passion.

There’s a sleep-song in Lully’s Atys which is extraordinarily similar. I wonder which came first!
