“In this gem of Baroque vocalism, Vivaldi conveys the heartrending imploration of the old shepherd at his oppressor’s feet with startling intensity through the use of a syncopated motif tirelessly repeated by the violins while the voice chants its prayer in adagio tempo, then breaks down in jerky vocalises, poignant sobs decorating the key words lamenti and pianto.” - Frédéric Delaméa

There is so much more to Vivaldi than the ubiquitous Quattro Stagioni. Much as I love him for the lighter, sparkling pieces full of brio he also delivers emotional depth as here. The thought that his legacy was almost lost is too terrible to contemplate.

Jean-Christophe Spinosi (1964.) is a French conductor and violinist, the founder of French orchestra Ensemble Matheus. In 1991 he created the Ensemble Matheus in Brest, an orchestra which accompanies him throughout the world. In 2005, the Ensemble Matheus made a series of recordings devoted to Vivaldi: they produced several albums and four operas. Simultaneously, he has continued to interpret the classical and romantic repertoire as well as many surprising and varied pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries. Different productions have since enabled Spinosi to enjoy musical friendships with artists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Philippe Jaroussky, with whom he recorded the album Heroes for EMI-Virgin Classics, a disc whose sales achieved triple-gold status...

As I listened to this beautiful rendition I was reminded of Jussi Bjorling (who had a Finnish grandmother). I would love to hear how Jussi would have interpreted this piece. We were cheated by just a few years of having high fidelity recordings of the great man and all those talents who lived before recording technology are lost to us forever.
