  • Michael Andretti's FIA-blessed bid to join the Formula 1 grid has fallen at the last, biggest hurdle - getting F1 itself to actually approve his entry.
And in fact, instead of a simple denial, F1 has offered quite an extensive list of reasons for why it doesn't believe Andretti's Cadillac/GM-supported bid is worthy of a seat at the table.
Here's our take on those reasons - and on F1's admission that it would take a different view on an actual GM-engined Andretti entry in 2008.

So many much more interesting and more competitive alternatives now: WEC, IMSA, Inydcar, F2, Super Formula. I'll probably tune into the Grand Prix for old time's sake, but my interest - I'm an F1 fan since the late 70s - is at an all time low. Joke circuits, obsession with status, 'show' and celebrities, and money prioritised over the sport every damn time.

hasnt been the pinnacle of motorsport for years. its a circus with a bunch of fat cats at the top looking to inflate their bank accounts further. It's all about money. F1 and other team fears that an 11th team will gain more by joining the grid instead giving back more to the competition.
Andretti (in all realistic situation) will not be fighting in mid-field; straight on by purchasing almost all possible components from other teams. Neither Andretti + GM are showing that they are going to be investing money to build new regulation car right out.
All Andretti is showing that they have experience in other FIA championships; they have a deal with PU supplier who will provide them with PUs in future. But now, all they have tweaked version of the F1's official concept car with Alpine PU behind it.
The simple question is what's the point of it then at this stage when regulations are changing in 2026? Why not submit a formal participation request for joining in 2026-27 with demonstrating their capabilities to design the whole car in their factory with GM investing for PU.

@@RitwickChatterjee14 Haas was allowed in in 2016, one year before the 2017 regulation change. Besides, there's a limit on how far ahead you can do development and testing for new regulation. Not even the existing teams have started on 2026, yet FOM require the applicant to have something to show for, as well as submit the application in good time. That's a logical fallacy. Provided they have the money to do so (and they do), bringing them in in 2025, gaining experience and knowledge would likely mean they'd be much more competitive in 2026 than if they were to come in in 2026 entirely.
Basically, you can make an argument for most of the reasons the FOM gave in isolation, and it would've been harsh, but fair. But with the way they've worded it, along with how using all of these arguments at once, it just seems spiteful and greedy. It's like they don't want to say yes, because they don't want it to seem like they gave in to the pressure. Schoolyard behaviour from the FOM.

are you actually that dumb? had Andretti tried instead of HAAS, they would be in. but that Cadillac branding is not right and kinda shady. if GM wants to get in, they need to chose a brand that is present WORLDWIDE and build their own engine. as a big manufacturer they have to. like Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault. and on top of that, racing with more than 20 cars would be extremely difficult because of the format. they already struggle with 20 to qualify properly. adding more cars would be asking to have more accidents during qualifications. and to be fair, we can't spread out sessions in time because weather can change and everybody deserve the same chance concerning track conditions, wind, temps etc... it's a logistic nightmare. so if they really wanna get in, they have to accept the rules no matter what they are. they can't afford the F a business just to have an American team. at some point you have to stop being babies my dear Murican friends. if a team was quitting, it would be nice to have Andretti. not there.

    It's absurd.
Andretti is everything F1 SHOULD BE.
A team from a country without one, with an extreme amount of racing heritage, A WORLD CHAMPION.
A new manufacturer, new engines, giving chances to new drivers or those who lost their seats - something desperately needed with how long seats last nowadays, sans DeVries.
A new thing for viewers to attatch to! It would have been incredibly interesting to watch Andretti in the next couple years, assuming Max stays dominant. Follow the little team that could, much like how DtS followed haas.
So many potential jobs, potential drama and entertainment and draw.
And why didn't they pull the trigger for a team so clearly dedicated to joining, with the money and history to back it up?
    Money.
You can say "it's the performance"
But F1 has no idea how Andretti would perform. That is done on the track, and with testing - which hasn't been publicly released.
Even from there, Haas started their first year ahead of 3 other teams, and by their third year, they were fifth, fighting quite closely with Renault for best of the rest. Why is it so incredible to assume that Andretti couldn't do that - or even do better?
EVEN IF their car couldn't perform, that's the entire point of the 107% rule. The rule specifically put into place in case a car is too slow to keep up and potentially dangerous/a road block for faster cars. The rule that would instantly, fairly, disqualify andretti if their car completely sucked and they didn't put in any effort.
"There's no room on the grid!"
But there is. All f1 tracks need to be able to hold ~26 cars, from FIA Grade 1 standards. That includes garages, etc. Hell, right now, F2 has 11 teams, and they go to almost/all of the tracks F1 goes to, on the same weekends! So that's bs.
"The values and such don't align!"
As I pointed out - Andretti is the name of an F1 world champion. It's one of the most prestigious family names in motorsport, and especially in America. My dad still has framed photos he took while on the Indy 500 starting grid like 20/30 years ago of Andrettis in their cars. Cadillac is also a big name both in racing and manufacturing, and GM is one of the largest vehicle manufacturers worldwide. They are also working hard on making renewable energy powered vehicles, one of which my family has owned since 2013. They have their own racing history, and are also currently competing in WEC endurance races and Lemans.
Let's compare that to Haas, "Visa Cashapp RB F1 Team" And... "Stake Kick" whatever.
Haas is complacent and willingly falling back down the order, with Haas himself refusing to invest in the team and just using them as a billboard - one he'll likely cut off soon once he decides it outlived it's usefulness.
Visa Cashapp RB is just american(?) money lending stuff, and a potential placeholder sponsor blatantly just used to bring in cash and increase RB's profit margin.
Stake? STAKE CAN'T EVEN ADVERTISE IN MULTIPLE COUNTRIES F1 TRAVELS TO! You cannot tell me that any of these hold more values and principles that align with F1 than Andretti.
Or maybe you can. Because clearly, both the teams, team principles, and F1 only care about money.
It's a shame. This very well could have been the most interesting development in f1 until 2026/8.

I feel this decision (of the FOM) has more to do with the power struggle between the FIA and the FOM, then with the team Andretti, which is a casualty to this power struggle. Now to my point, the F1 (FOM) is a USA company, the FIA is an European institution. The FIA approved the admission of Andretti, the FOM did not. The FOM, being a USA company, I(EU) cannot understand that they discarded this admission like this, while they, of all, should know the Andretti heritage. I think Haas hurt Andretti-GM's chances here. F1 let Haas join and while it was initially competitive, it has only fallen down the table. And now we know that Gene Haas is happy to let the team just bounce along the bottom, not investing in the team, and just wanting it on the grid. This whole experience has left a sour taste in team's mouth and I think we're seeing the result. Combine this with having to further divide up the pie and you get a steep curve to overcome. The exclusivity of Formula 1 has once again been underscored by the recent decision to reject Andretti’s team from joining its ranks, a move that has not only sparked controversy but also prompted me to reassess my support for the sport. The essence of Formula 1, with its rich history and tradition of showcasing the pinnacle of motorsport engineering and driver skill, seems increasingly overshadowed by the commercial interests that dictate its operations.
The rejection of Andretti, a name synonymous with racing excellence and legacy, underscores a disheartening trend towards prioritizing financial considerations over the expansion and diversification of the competition. This decision raises critical questions about the direction in which Formula 1 is headed, and whether it truly remains committed to fostering a competitive and inclusive environment or if it has veered too far towards exclusivity, guarded by financial barriers.
As a long-time follower of the sport, it’s disconcerting to witness Formula 1’s apparent drift away from its roots of competitive spirit and innovation, towards a paradigm where monetary influence seems to overshadow merit and potential contributions to the sport. This shift challenges the very principles that have drawn countless fans to Formula 1, fostering a sense of disillusionment among those who have long cherished the sport’s ability to inspire and excite.
In light of these developments, my allegiance to Formula 1 is being put to the test. The sport’s current trajectory, marked by this recent rejection and the prevailing influence of financial considerations, has left me questioning the value of my continued support. It’s a moment of reflection for many fans who find themselves at a crossroads, contemplating the future of their relationship with Formula 1 amidst its evolving priorities.

Not to mention Alpine, the epitome of average. I wouldn't be surprised if Andretti joined in 2026 and immediately finished 6th or 7th in their first season. None of those teams are very good and almost every team besides maybe 3 or 4 if you're generous of the 10 are way overvalued.

8:40 Andretti has way more name recognition than Haas or even Toro Rosso/Alphatauri/Visa RB. At best, their name recognition can be compared to Williams, which is historic in the motorsports scene.
Having said that, I'm okay for 2025 rejection, not 2026. That would have been too soon, akin the 1997 Lola team.

The franchise model seems to only be a negative in terms of competitiveness. I know this isn't the audience for it, but the League of Legends North American League went to a franchise model about 5-6 years ago and its only led to the sport stagnating , teams loosing their identities and they stopped trying to compete and started just showing up for the paycheck and branding. I think franchising sounds like a really stable and good thing for sports, but in practice, they only harm the sport in favor of maintaining profit margins

    • @florisbackx1744
      @florisbackx1744 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Well you found one member of the audience and you are completely correct, I've been making the exact the same comparison in my head. Close shop and let the ones that are in chill and bottom feed all the while keeping the real and motivated competitors out of your little paradise. All nice well until it starts to diminish the quality of the sport itself, you know, all form (entertainment) and no substance (sport and competition).then all of a sudden it is drama and the all jump ship selling to the highest bidder.

I'm an understanding audience and agree with you 100%. Plus I feel like F1 has always had its roots in engineering. IE who can build the best car for the formula. And by going to a franchise model they make it hard for others to come in and prove (or fail to prove) their skills. For me personally, a franchise model seems better suited to spec cars

There is one difference with 2016 and 2025 that they didn't mentioned and it was the cost cap. I don't know how much they spent the but they were open to spent how much they wanted and now they can't do that.
Also people seem to go all in on Liberty / F1 but I believe that they are doing all of this because they know that they existing teams didn't allowed them to introduce a new team under the current terms.
