Just got mine yesterday. I swaped it with the drawmer 1974 at the end of my Analog 2-buss chain. OMG!! Ran the same mix through the chain comparing 1974 to Symph. All I can say is I now achieved a 3D image mainly because I hear my reverbs now and how they set things in the front to back. Biggest game changer even more so than a full Bento box of 500 tools. Just engaging the HP filter @22 fixed and focused my low end. Great video I actually just bought this item waiting for it to be delivered. I’m trying to get more into understanding EQ more what throwing me off is the mid side function do you have to run it through the EQ print it and then run it again but in mid side mode?
Not sure what you mean but, unless I'm not understanding, no. This eq is stereo/dual mono or mid/side meaning, you have two sets of identical controls, left right if you 're in stereo mode and if you activate mid/side the left side controls the MID channel and the right side controls the SIDE channel. If you have different settings for MID and SIDE and you print your mix thru the eq then that's what you're gonna get, mid side eq on your mix.
Hello David. I have the Symph EQ now ! A friend of mine has the Maag EQ4 and says that he can achieve the same quality/result that the Symph AQ. Hard hard battle with no winner. They're both amazing. Symph definitely having a more vintage color (box) and maag sounding a bit more modern and cleaner. The main difference is of course in the number of bands. The air vs the 24K are extremely different and you never know which lift is gonna work better, every time is try both and listen. Maag has a firmer bottom but Symph has filter so, one is more focused but the other can sound bigger. The filters on the Symph are amazing, my go-to filters for mastering and mixbus, and of course it has mid/side, Maag doesn't (even though I can use it in m/s if I want thru insert in the fusion). The 160Hz is the most underrated band on the Maag, instant muscle.
@@mixbustv Thanks David I use the Neve MBP and I read that the Maag is a good EQ to use with it. Then I heard the Heritage and really like what I heard, I am just deciding on which one to get 1st.
Has anyone actually compared this with a Dangerous Bax? I have the Dangerous Bax and the price was double the price of this one but the Symph sounds like it could possibly be just as good as the Bax. Is my Bax twice as good? Probably not.
I love Dangerous stuff (AD+ is my mastering converter), I don't love the BAX. Top end is a bit cold to me and it just doesn't go well with everything, for me, with most things, give I have a large selection of EQs. I much preferred the Symph
@@mixbustv Good to hear it. I'll get a Symph right away and see if I can get rid of the Bax. The reason I got a Bax is because I needed something for rolling off HF with a magic sounding curve for the shelf and cut. I wanted something that sounds like a record with the HF rolloff. I need to roll off highs cause I drive into it with a special kind of exciter chain that makes boosted shimmery HF. I also use the Bax for high pass at 18 Hz to take a little DC load off monitors. One time I was traveling in a hot climate and had to mix a sub bass heavy song. I used monitors I'm familiar with and they were overheating. I realized a high pass at 20 Hz made them stop overheating, even though plugin meters weren't detecting any significant DC offset problems. I learned from that and use the high pass to relieve load from monitor drivers. It's nice to see the Symph has 10, 12, 18 and also 22 Hz.
That's the most natural sounding EQ I've ever seen, but I hate how the lights are backwards. I see lights that are on and I think the unit is on, not bypassed

Hey David, got my API5500 a few weeks ago and I really love it, but it doesn’t really deliver these silky highs that people refer to when talking about EQPs etc. Do you think that the API would work well together with the Symph for these kind of applications?
I'd describe the Symph electric not silky. Silky is expensive..SPL is silky, Pultec (In my case Empress) is silky, the silkiest of all, bar none is the EAR but it's unavailable. MP has great highs too but the lows not good for me. Change the op amp on the 5500 to Libers and you'll have silkiER still not like the others but much softer and more musical than the stock ones
Thank you, David. I‘m also looking into the new PEQ-2 from Heritage. Maybe I‘ll get two of these then. Unfortunately they are still not available. Any chance you do a review on those in the near future?
Hi David, great review as always! I have my eyes on this unit for some time now. My question is:when you use this on the 2-bus, do you think it works better before or after the mixbus compressor?
Hey David, Im looking (possibly) to get this, it sounds good to me, unfortunately Im not able to test it in person. I have the SSL Violet eq for mix bus or sometimes drum bus and it's nice and clean (high mids and upper highs are very nice) but def I want a bax eq as my first option. Does it add color? I saw it has transformers which can be nice. What do u think? cheers
Yes it does, it has the same xformers as a 1073 but it's not too much color (box) to be not versatile. The top end tho definitely has a color that is a hit or miss for the top boost.
Hello David, thanks for doing this, is the Drawmer 1974 eq capable of doing the bax thing? How does it compare for the same application (subtile tonal tonal balance)? Best regards
Yes and no, 1974 is a great eq, like really great, but it doesn't have baxandall curves, it has shelves tho' , is it the same? No. Also it has color even if subtle, bax doesn't really (I don't like the top end of the bax btw, and the rest is pretty sterile), so it all depends what you do, are you a mix engineer or a mastering engineer, then if you feel you need the bax, you get the bax, if you are not, don't sweat it, the 74 is a great eq
I wouldn't say more focused, it's cleaner, which is better some times and not some others. Neve's key is how they saturate that low end but they only have 2 corner freq and usually 50Hz is the one to use (15ips), but you can't really see it as an eq like this. If you want hyper focus then it's api or SPL
Thank you for the video David. I just ordered one, thanks to your video ! I'm not an engineer, it's more for my backing tracks that I use when playing live. I was wondering what is the main difference between the Dangerous BAX EQ and the Symph ? I assume you might have worked with the Dangerous... And another question : since you have the wonderful SPL mastering EQ, why didn't you buy the SPL Iron Compressor ? It seems to have a ton of possibilities, isn't is good enough for your work ? Thank you David
The bax is a lot more sterile than then Symph which has a really nice color, because of the 73 style amp, and as I described in the video, very sub and top are never out of control x and also features, ms, 0.5db just a superior design. I'm very picky with tubes, the iron is fine but didn't wow me, and I went for another big tube compressor instead, it'll be here in September.

David, did you notice any phase or stereo image issues while using this unit? I read few comments on the internet where people were reporting those problems. Thank for the answer. Ps. Do you still have this EQ in your everyday mastering chain?
I never noticed any of the above, if something like this happened it's definitely a case of a unit, it happened before with noise with another one of their pieces. And yes, I still have and use this every day
Hey Dave, I have one of these and wanted to ask where you put this in your chain. I have mine before the fatso & Rupert Neve Mbp. Would you put it after tape? Wickedness increase as always!
Where I put mine might be different from what you need, I don't know if you have more than one eq (I'm guessing you're talking about 2bus). Because of the filters, mine is before the NG Comp and the Spacecraft, after the 542's, Fusion, SPL PQ, and I have the MAAG post compression. But I also have the Flock so I can change that. But sure you can put it between those
Finally got to watch it... blimming good unit, not just for the price... and the price makes it such an easy add on I have a question: what unit would be this but for the bass? is there something in the same price range?
This is a killer unit for bass. If you want more control in that price range you'd go 1974 but you won't get the smoothness of this, altho' a warm sound (the 1970 is an amazing channel strip for bass), otherwise API but price is higher
@@mixbustv weirdly this is what I was thinking… the drawmer eq being so precise and this just adding that little last bit… I guess when you think logically you’re ideas will match regularly… as long as both have the correct information lol.. why you’re one of my main go to’s for hearing about things… I’ve almost got a finished list for a budget analogue recording, stereo mixing and also mastering and you’ve provided most of the main inspirations… the Moon thing was one of my favourites… just trying to figure out a couple compressors… not far off
Sounds good but I would not call this a Mastering EQ. Its more of an EQ that sits on the stereo buss to round out the mix but its not going to dial in those fine nuances of a true mastering EQ.
Why? The difference between a mastering eq and a "mixing" eq is mainly 3 thing: recallability. Mastering eq's have switches or dents, others don't; 2) noise floor, 3) range. This has all three of those in check, plus a pair of some of the best filters out there
@@mixbustv Like I said, it does sound good but it does not have nearly enough controls of the mids to be considered by professional mastering houses. This is a home studio "mastering" EQ and I use that term loosely. I understand theres a chance you have gear from Heritage that they gifted you and you have to say certain things to maintain that relationship which is fine but Mastering Engineers are not using this solely in their rooms.

Please write to bookinghfs@gmail.com my manager will reply to all your questions 👍
Wow very impressive. The top end sounds really smooth and solid! Thanks for the demo! Quick question David, little off topic, but have you heard the 500 ssl ultraviolet and ssl e series eq? Im deciding if I'll buy 2 ssl e series or just buy ultraviolet. Any suggestions I manly mix hip hop and r&b if you have any recommendations for hardware mixing
I think I replied in the other comment, the violet is nice, but not a 2bus or mastering eq, e series are channels eqs
Very nice demo!
Can I add this to my vocal chain
The people from the Mediterranean Sea know how to make things sound pretty 🇪🇸
David, did you notice any phase or stereo image issues while using this unit? I read few comments on the internet where people were reporting those problems. Thank for the answer.
Ps. Do you still have this EQ in your everyday mastering chain?
I never noticed any of the above, if something like this happened it's definitely a case of a unit, it happened before with noise with another one of their pieces. And yes, I still have and use this every day
wonderful sound
That reggae track is nice
The whole album is, I mastered two for him
Hey Dave, I have one of these and wanted to ask where you put this in your chain.
But sure you can put it between those
I wish i could do this with plugins :(
Finally got to watch it... blimming good unit, not just for the price... and the price makes it such an easy add on
I have a question: what unit would be this but for the bass? is there something in the same price range?
What mastering eq would you say handles all of the frequency bands well?

Man, I've got pretty good ears and I am not hearing a ton of difference. A Tad fuller, more pumping bass? Guess it isn't for me.
Yeah, I'm not hearing anything and I've been doing this for 20 years. Just pointless gear. Could do the same thing with a plugin. And don't get me wrong, I love analog gear, and own lots of it.
@@auralplexyeah I’m not hearing anything through my Sennheisers, but I shouldn’t even need those to hear a difference. More exaggerated examples combined with subtle examples would have been more useful, I think.
Oh I just heard a subtle difference on the metal guitar example - slightly more open top end.
@@RyanHarris77listened on atc 150’s and the difference was stunning. Next thing we’re purchasing
first time hearing an EQ and i do not hear difference between bypass and active LOL
🤦🏿♂️ I hope you listing to it on some good speakers
@@djonlyvibe You shouldn't have to listen to it on "good speakers." I'm listening on a logitec 2.1 system (w/ sub), and I hear almost no difference. Nobody in the real world is going into a treated studio room to listen to their music on $10,000 speakers.
Both of you have trash ears
Still best to understand what is happening in a good environment so you can hear things that could be clouding your mix and your wouldn’t know it
i’m just here to make a simp eq joke
How can people actually hear the difference between the unprocessed and processed audio in this video? It is bullshit... the quality of the audio is bad, you can't hear the difference properly...
I'm sure my 127K subs and all the companies who hired me to review their products for the past 6 years agree with your brilliant mind lol
@@mixbustv I am talking about people watching the video... on their laptops, iMacs, etc. surely you CAN hear it in your studio... just bought one today, for a very very good price, I think...less than £800
Not impressed with this one, but looking forward for MAAG review. Tnx, Cheers!
I told you ; )
