Just a disclaimer to all prospective PhD students, please enroll in a PhD program ONLY and ONLY if you have genuine interest towards research and academia. I've seen many students who are good academically but struggle a lot in the PhD programs because they have 0 interest in research. PhD is no joke, it's a commitment of at least 4-6 years working 40-60+ hours a week. If you have no interest in research, it's not the end. Look for jobs in your home country or other countries. But don't torture yourself for half a decade in doing something you absolutely despise doing.

Agreed 100%. It may be more than 6 years if you are pursuing PhD in natural sciences in the US, thanks to the pandemic disrupting experimental work for many (saying from experience). PhD takes a LOT of dedication, effort, patience….at the end of the end, it is all about passion….do you eat, breath, sleep, dream your research? Then, go ahead and do a PhD. Please don’t do a PhD in the US to get visa sponsorship or if you want a green card. It is a not a mature decision.

Sometimes they don't have any other choice. This is their only way to prolong their stay in US. Trust me, many of us would gladly relocate to any other country if they had a job offer waiting for them. But the fact of the matter is, they don't have one. Its not just US, almost every economy around the world is suffering now. Don't put the blame entirely on students, when the economy is shit.

For the rest bottom 75% of the students. I would advise them to not come to US for masters until at least the interest rates start coming down. If you make a decision,
    1) Make sure that you have some niche skills and are in a specialized industry (core engineering) with not many people. The software engineering and IT/IS jobs are the worst hit now and many generic software jobs are on the verge of getting eliminated.
    2) Try to get an MBA 3-4 years after masters and quickly climb the corporate ladder to be on a safer side. The bottom layer of the pyramid is the most disposable (particularly engineers with years of experience earning high salaries and not have anyone working under them).

MBA is an overhyped degree that does not guarantee a decent job. Lot of what that gets taught can be learnt by reading books on your own. Most of it is general knowledge and can be learnt via experience. Wouldn't spend money on something that does not matter and add value to my knowledge commensurate with the money it takes.

The thing is, even though in India, you wont be able to get US like salaries, but then, expenses and taxes are less. And more importantly, immigration hassle and a constant stress of visa renewal is not there. I went to abroad for my masters, recently came back to India, and I am doing good in life. Even though India cant match US salaries and lifestyle, but still, there is very high rates of reverse migration now a days, with more people posting their videos of coming back to India from western nations! The more we highlight western consumerism, the more west would dominate us geo politically. The day we start staying here to build something for India, we grow stronger. Video was informative, thanks for sharing.

Doing a terminal MS in USA in general directly after a BTech in India is mostly a waste of time and money. Instead use those two years to work in your related field of study and get the experience. At that stage you will come to know what interests you and from there you can decide on the next steps. Even then come to US to do a terminal MS only if you are joining a university which is well reputed and/or close to industries which are in your field of interest.

Its obvious 99% of people look at masters as significant investment of time and money and they are looking for ROI immediately. The last thing those students want to do is again torture themselves with more academic work unless they have an interest in curiosity, teaching others with patience and not making much or no money. Coming up with genuine research topics is no joke too as it involves deep diving into several sub fields within an area and scoping out potential material of value to humanity. It could be more painful than living in basement. So, what's better than a masters degree? Another masters degree 😆. If you can't do PhD, do more masters degrees. 6 years worth of masters degrees is equal to or more difficult than a single PhD, anybody will surely stand out with so many advanced degrees but making $200K commitment to get $60k job is also something that needs to be carefully considered as only rich students without loans will be able to take so many hits designed by corrupt people, system and institutions.

One thing I've understood is to properly prepare before planning for education in the US. Ideally, the best decision is to not come to the US for education if getting a job is the end goal (at least moving forward). Most successful candidates actually built a good profile while in India itself. Worked for 2-3 years in the industry at a famous company, created quantifiable impact. Had their resume ready before getting on the flight to US. Landed in Fall semesters and immediately started applying for summer internships at known H1B sponsorship companies. Maintained strong academics throughout. Did co-ops before graduating and had potential full-time offers few months before graduating. They used that offer as leverage to interview at other big shot companies and bagged high paying positions (mostly in tech). Highly recommend not even considering studying in the US unless you have a generous scholarship. Use this visa process to your advantage.

Pursue Undergraduate from a part time college or from distance learning. By the time you finish college, one would have solid 4 years of exp. If you are still academically inclined, go for a reputed Masters Program.

Some estimate 40% of human jobs worldwide will be converted to AI within 15 years. Companies here already started. They've been posting ghost vacancies to create the illusion of a worker shortage and a well economy. A lot of people, especially 20-somethings, have been complaining about losing their jobs and/or not being contacted/hired for other ones which don't exist.
