Out of all the Prisoner/Portmeirion videos on YT, this one by far is the finest. Excellent comparison shots, no unnecessary narration, no fathead videographer's mug obscuring any shots. Well done.
It might be the music - but I found this video very emotional. A feeling of sadness came over me and a strong feeling of loss - of a time in the past that I was part of, but now has gone. A powerful video. I think its also that you don't have the sound from the video - it gives it an ethereal feel - adding to the sense of loss.
I was just about to say this too! I never watched the Prisoner as a teen when it was on the BBC, but I'm 55 now, and literally just started watching it this week. Seeing Patrick McGoohan wandering around the village, and fading into how Portmeirion looks today, made me feel very sad too. He must've spent months walking around the place, and now he's no longer with us. But what a legacy to leave behind. I'm going to visit it next year, I think.
That was a fantastic presentation. I watched the Prisoner when it was put on American television as a Summer replacement show in 1968. Watched it again during the Summer of 1969. This motivated me to travel to England in November of 1978. Stayed a week in London. I took a trip to see Stonehenge and later to see the White Cliffs of Dover. IIRC, Portmeirion was "Closed" for the Winter. Someday I hope to visit Portmeirion.
Great message and thank you. We'll be going down to Portmeirion later this year for a look again and we'll take some footage to upload on the channel. All the best.
@@TheOfficialMinistryOfTruth I was riveted to your video - very moving. If you’re going back, maybe borrow some variable focal length lenses to not only match the original camera positions, but also the field of view. To really line up the surviving landmarks across the entire old & new frames would make all the changes crystal clear. A challenging goal, granted. But, for the few examples in your vid where the matches were virtually identical, the effect was stunning! In any case, I appreciate the effort you invested into this vid. I enjoyed it immensely. 🙏🏻☺️🍁
@@yvonneplant9434 We think they are alluding to Portmeirion becoming a mini 'Disney World' and losing it's character.....mind you, seeing a fat Mickey Mouse being chased by a Rover on the beach, would be somewhat amusing.
Must have taken ages to line up exactly the shots so perfectly. Very cool shot where No.6 comes out of his cottage - almost looked like CGI! I guess the focal lengths of the lens must be almost identical. Great job! Best recent 'Prisoner' thing I have seen in a long time.
Just amazing match up of standing in exactly the same place as the film cameras back in the 1960's this must have taken years to complete looking at the TV series then matching up all the places what an achievement and beautifully done too!!
This is absolutely wonderful, chilling, in a way, how you've pieced together the scenes, the spots and the shots. I made a pilgrimage to all those places in 1993...seeing them again in this way sorta knitted my memories into the fabric of your film. Thank you very much!
Well done, that must have took some work. It's great to see Portmeirion looking just as lovely and relaxed as ever and London erm well not. I need to watch this again now.
Excellent work replicating those exact camera angles. Lovely to see the comparisons. Love the simplicity of the 60s - fewer people, less traffic and unspoilt areas. London has become The Village with its cameras and penalty fines for ULEZ and congestion.
The original car KAR120C was the Lotus demonstrator borrowed for the filming and I remember enjoying the series when it first came out. A Lotus 7 was one of my dream cars and in the early 90s I had the chance to buy and build one. When I ordered it I was sent the order form which had multiple selection options, 3 pages I recall, I decided to be lazy and tick just one box, Prisoner option, which came with all the options I wanted.. With the order placed I made a special phone call, to DVLA, and bought a personal number plate, K12KAR. The Lotus 7 had become the Caterham 7 by this time but they still owned the KAR120C registration. A phone call from Caterham and I was invited to attend a Prisoner convention at a London hotel as they were taking their car. I met many of the actors and extras and had a really fun day, The two cars were parked either side of the main entrance with KAR120C one side and K12KAR the other. I still have the autograph album with autographs from the day as well as lots of photos including Patrick McGowan's stunt double standing beside my car.
Excellent comment and many thanks for sharing your history with us. Luke, one of our channel hosts, owns the original speedometer panel from the main screen used Mini-Moke. Check out those pics in our community tab. Thanks again!
Wonderful! You know "Every nut, bolt, and cog!" I am an OHMSS fan, since I was 11, and I am restoring a 1969 Aston Martin DBS to film spec. Someday she will do scene re-enactments in London and Portugal. Be seeing you!
That was a great upload, I really enjoyed that, makes me nostalgic for the 1960s when London and the rest of the UK was still normal! I was a kid when the prisoner first aired!
A wonderful comparison of the TV series and the real place. Such a beautiful location to visit! And Chill! Shame Number 6 looks so pissed. He really didn't like his captivity, did he!
Visited Portmeirion in 2014. The tide was out, so we walked round the headland to Boston Lodge. A very enjoyable holiday in Porthmadog the weather broke the day we left. Now semi-retired in Picton, South Island, New Zealand.
I went there with my parents in the 60s just as they had finished filming the series, we sat at the cafe for a cup of tea and the chalk marks to position cameras etc were still on the floor. At the time I had never heard of the Prisoner, but I watched all of it later.
Oh yes, Cobbled Streets. So you are telling me cobbled streets are psychedelic sixties. Clearly there was Georgian 3.47 archtecture there also. You could paint statues og the Georges in psychedilia and call the them The three psychedelic Monarchs. But you won't fool every one. LOL
A great video and my auntie’s dad was Sir Clough William-Ellis who designed and was behind the building of Portmeirion that as a kid in the late 1960’s saw this incredible show. And a far few times since. I always wanted to go there, but a bit too old now to do that. Thanks for the post.
Thank you fo this. I've been a fan of the show since the first re-run back in 1983 and had no idea until now that the opening credits of him driving the Lotus were filmed at Santa Pod racetrack, and just a stone's throw from where I live!
Superb well done to those who made it, I was 12 in 1968 actually went on holiday in North Wales not far from the "village" 68/69 by your video its been kept very much the same a the "Prisoner" series, I remember going out on the "sands" when the tide receded , you have to go and visit to appreciate how much the estuary recedes, Im from west of London, so remember London back then, some of it was lovely, great memories Thank you
Most of the Portmerion scenes were shot in the month of September 1966, the studio scenes were done later, before the first episode of the Prisoner aired in Autumn 1967. Many of the locals from the area were used as extras for the filming. A lovely place to visit, I've been there several times with the family.

This is amazing, I just finished a rewatch of the series, so interesting how less cluttered everything was in the 60s
Whoever produced this is genius. Very powerful. Portmeirion feels like a holy place.
This is wonderful and quite an achievement to get all these shots together.
I love Portmeirion. It's amazing to watch The Prisoner on their video channel there, look out your window and see the same artefacts and buildings.
