Septima is a competitive, highly interactive strategy game of witchcraft. As the leader of your coven, you must prove your worth in the town of Noctenburg to become the successor of Septima, the High Witch. Practice your craft and gain wisdom by collecting herbs, brewing potions, healing the townsfolk, mastering charms and rescuing your fellow brothers and sisters from the trials. But beware: magic, even if used for good, invokes suspicion in the townsfolk...
Simultaneous action selection with positive player interaction: Septima’s central mechanism revolves around the simultaneous, secret selection of one of nine Action cards each turn: Move, Collect, Brew, Heal, Recruit, Plea, Chant, Rite and Remember. Each Action gets a powerful bonus if it is chosen by multiple players, but performing them together also raises suspicion in the townsfolk and attracts the attention of the Witch Hunters. Decisions of when to do a shared action (and who to do it with) adds a fresh, semi-cooperative touch to a competitive game, and lots of player interaction.
Rescue witches to build your Coven: Heal, enthrall or convince the townsfolk and amass enough support to sway the periodic Witch Trials in your favor. If the hostile witnesses are outvoted, the convicted witch is absolved and joins the coven that rescued them. You start small but you can grow your coven to up to four witches this way, each with their own personality and special ability to help your cause. Reckless Witches caught by Witch Hunters are also put to trial, so with enough support from the townsfolk, even witches from other, less careful players’ coven can end up in yours.
Accessible, intuitive and familiar: Septima is Mindclash Games’ most accessible title to date, with beautiful, hand-drawn art style by Villő Farkas and with the character art of Barbara Bernát, wooden components and intuitive, theme-inspired mechanisms. It is very quick to teach and set up, and takes less than 2 hours to play, even with four players.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

Thanks for the overview. I really appreciate how you approach covering a game. I was interested in this, but a lot of your comments showed me that I probably wouldn't enjoy the experience, even though a lot of the mechanisms look interesting. My wallet is definitely happy that I'll be skipping this. lol.

Such a great, balanced review. Do you think that strictly at the two player count the negotiation mechanic wouldn’t have a negative impact in your view?

I just read the rules once but regarding your negative point on a player never matching with the other two in a 3 player game, isnt there a chance to also match with the Septima?

This is what happened to my daughter in our three player game. Me and my wife matched like 6 turns in a row and she didn’t and got left behind on the ritual board. But she came back at the end by focusing on other things

Have you tried Anachrony and Trickerion from Mindclash. They are very nice games.
At the last Gaming Weekend (55 People), preseverance was played quite often, but did not get everyone on the tables. Seems to be good, but not brilliant.

Not feeling the gameplay for Septima. Theme is interesting, artwork isn't working for me, and now I don't think the gameplay is working for me either.
I think I'll wait on this one, see what players say when they get it. So many games are getting reprints when they do well.

That looks like a game made to be played at 4. 3 players probably don't offer the table talk and enough opportunities to choose which cards to copy and gain most of out your actions.

  • @FluffyMrB

disregarding the theme, play style, etc, which would be more worth the price? This game, or Skyrise? I'm torn between the two. Septime seems like a game with deeper gameplay, but seems like there's a lot going on at once, which seems like it's just a part-creep without adding much, while Skyrise seems a bit too light for the price (as you need to include VAT+shipping).

    • @juliankuhn5990
      @juliankuhn5990 2 ปีที่แล้ว

my EXACT conundrum! Septima looks like it has more "game" but Skyrise looks sooo damn good but just kinda too light. i think Septima will be the better game but i think would rather not miss out on the collectors edition of Skyrise than the screenprinted pieces from Septima...

Why I have a feel that if behind there was no Mindclash Games it will be 3 and no 3.5? It happens to me when I like some producer to give more credits...

Oh I don't yet have an attachment to mindclash. I haven't played any of the games enough to know. But no, definitely a 3.5... There's a lot of inter weaving mechanics that are very solid.

Not only the theme, this look likes a lot to broom service, the difference is that the broom service is a pick up and delivery, and this changed the mechanic a little bit but with the same feelings. And broom service looks like a very much more streamlined game than septima. The feelings I had with your video was pretty much the same, i know they are different games, but looks like this one had a lot from broom service.
They changed some mechanics of the scoring, but the core mechanism is the same, the theme is almost the same, and the conception of walk on a map to do things is almost the same feeling as you walk in the map to deliver stuff, but not as streamlined.
