Evacuation is REALLY, REALLY good | A full review of every mode & module

  • Here's the thing: we don't really like games set in space (not an easy preference to navigate in board gaming!) However, when we read Vladimir's process for making this game, and the broader concept of it (the U shaped story progression we discuss) we knew we HAD to buy it at Essen. Plus, we loved last year's Woodcraft so that made this a must-buy for us... and we're so glad we did.
We hope this review helps you decide if this game is for you! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for stopping by for our review of Evacuation! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

Not liking asymmetry in games is still so hard for me to grasp. 'What set am I playing today?' is an exciting question for me personally. Especially for a game I enjoy, as it adds variability and new experiences to explore through numerous plays. But then I guess I also don't mind 'cognitive load' or additional load in my games either if it's justified, and for me personally variability usually does justify it.

Unfortunately lately Suchy isn't doing too much in terms of expansions. But I feel like at least the race mode might need more variability?! (This is just a theoretical thought, I've only played it once so far.) I like the idea of the race mode more, but it might be too samey after a few plays.

@@RaduStanculescu there's only a small number of decks in each category in this game. Longevity will suffer a lot if there are no expansions plans. I genuinely think this is best work in years and I hope it sells well. You would also be surprised just how small the box is. It was so refreshing to see how much he was able to comfortably able to out into a box of that size

@@elqord.1118 Oh, I've already played it once (race mode, standard actions, strict end of round bonuses). I think with points mode at least you might be able to focus on different things? But race more feels quite limiting.

What else did you rate a 9 this year Maggie? Separate question: Loved that it played well at 2 and within an hour. What games are similar complexity to this one? Wondering if it’s too complex for us or to hit the table. But 60 minutes play time-wow.

Wow, a Space-game and THAT score Amy?? I am not sure this is even for me, and I like good space-games. It looks like this game is rather WORK. And it also looks like a dry Euro. Themewise: to find two planets with water in the Goldilocks zone of a single star system that close together (who also look very similar) - is like another phantasy game. Lol. Thanks for the great review.

Love this game, but I do have a couple issues with it, all of which have to do with the instructions. a hand full of very important elements should defiantly be highlighted better, particularly how infrastructure works and WHAT ALL THE ICONOGRAPHY ACTUALLY MEANS. Also the sheet that describes the objective cards for points mode is horribly worded and there should be a full description of the anatomy of these cards and their basic mechanics. That being said I highly recommend this game for those who like euros with some weight to them.

This is first Evacuation review I see. I am a bit surprised how often you used word "stadium". I imagined that we have to build mines, for resources, plants for energy or farms for food but instead I see stadiums. What is a purpose of that building? Is there a happy society living and speding their time on entertainment so they forget caring about their planet so now they have to leave?

Great review!! It is now on pre-order for me!! I mean, Amy and Maggie both love it even though it is space with some asymmetry! What??? WOOT! I can't believe it plays in only an hour with two players. My sweet spot for Euros is the 60-90 minute time frame. Going on the DTW play list :).
