    great video, loved your insights. I bought my mini half a year ago with almost the same accessories (owned a monitor etc. before it), with all licenses installed for round about 28k€ (5000 hours), freshly serviced by arri. So for everyone considering buying a mini after watching this video - you can get a mini for way less money.
    For a long time, I was figuring out what camera would be the best investment for me: mini, minilf or alexa35. But you are completely right - production companies don‘t really have that more budget for a mini lf or 35. Really an eye-opening insight, thank you. I thought I could contribute by sharing some of my own experience and yes, the camera is still in high demand for being rented out. And personally, I don‘t worry about the resolution so much, especially with topaz 8k video upscaling around the corner. And 200 fps is still enough for most of the jobs out there. So all in all, I‘m really happy with my purchase and don‘t regret it at all.

    You are totally right with red looking digital, I owned multiple DSMC2, Komodo etc, and all the sensors always had a digital sharpness to them, even with some difffusion it still rendered skin tones more clinically, so its good for TV etc, but anything 'filmic' based, cant beat arri.

    It's been a dream of mine to own an ARRI camera, but I wouldn't feel comfortable dropping that kind of $$$$ on something I wasn't 100% sure on in terms of how often I'd actually shoot with it. That's really smart what you did by having people rent it out. The only "cinema" cameras I have ever operated were the Blackmagic Ursa and Ursa Mini. They were a great beginner course on how to build and operate a cinema camera. I've been looking up to see if anybody offers classes on how to operate the ARRI or RED cameras but if not, then I'll have to rent one of them and see how that goes.

    I actually side-graded to an alexa mini from an Alexa XT Plus. To be completely honest it was more for health reasons than for the mini itself. I kinda fell in love with the operating style of the "good old studio camera" although this definetly has its downsides. But I started getting really intense backproblems even with an appropriate Easyrig (the bloody thing is almost 20 pounds, just the body and viewfinder) And on recent virtual production projects I pushed it to around 45 pounds. So there was really just the option, getting the lighter Mini or stop working in this Industry because of health issues in a couple of years:( But enough sad storys told; really enjoyed you video mate 😀

      Gemini is great. But now everyone wants V-Raptor if they ask for RED, because producers only know the buzz words. I own a Komodo, but think the image is clean, but doesn't have that organic look that Gemini or even old Dragon sensor has. The Komodo looks a lot like Pocket 6K. Gemini sensor renders gorgeous skin tones. Sadly RED DSMC2 is becoming red-headed step child that no one wants. Haha.

    • @joshherumdp
      @joshherumdp  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willvazquez3218 yeah I have used the Red Epic Dragon and Red Weapon Dragon, and I like that sensor alot it feels a little more gritty. I had the Komodo for a year and a half and you can definitely create some great images with it but the image always felt a little “plasticy” to me. The V-Raptor looks like a really cool camera, and like I said in the video, for the right project I would choose it for it’a look, which from what I’ve seen the skin become more smooth and polished in a way, and the image overall looks a little “liquidy” in a good way.

    Good perspective. I almost pulled the trigger on a mini last year and it got sold right as I told the person I wanted to buy it. Then as I was looking for another I got a stupid deal on a Gemini and jumped on it. Bought a Scarlett w as a backup, but ended up selling it when I got an even crazier deal on a monstro…so now I run a Monstro/Gemini combo and it’s been really good to me. I still find the red image to be very organic…just in a different way. The arri certainly has its own magic to it. Def think often tho about how life would be if the one I almost bought hadn’t sold.

    • @joshherumdp
      @joshherumdp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @joshkiddfilms1295
      @joshkiddfilms1295 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshherumdp it def seems like the creamiest of the reds I’ve shot…but haven’t compared it directly to raptor or anything. But I feel the same way and really enjoy many things shot on monstro or even the dxl2 which also uses the Monstro sensor. I’ve been seeing XTs go for such good deals lately I’ve been tempted to pick one up.

    Dang the rates in ur area are so different from LA. Full package w batteries, media, tripod, filters, follow focus, two monitors, is renting for 350/day here. And the used price on a 3500 hour mini is 26k. I’m debating trying to get one to rent mostly, but the competition here so fierce.

    • @joshherumdp
      @joshherumdp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely will impact it but since it is such an expensive camera I think most indie features, medium size commercials won’t have the budget to rent one but all the big commercials or studio features will switch to shooting on it. And not just expensive to buy, but also expensive to shoot between memory and batteries, watch @lewispotts newest video on his YT channel

    The idea that you use a camera because it gives you a certain "look, characteristics, color, skintones" has been proven to be outdated and completely false when you take into account modern day color correction/grading. I would say all digital cameras look inherently "digital". I have yet to see one that looks like film, cineon, or print film out of the box. Recently I did a test comparing both the V-Raptor and Alexa 35 at Keslow Camera. In about two minutes, I was able to match both cameras easily to my personal look. Any perceptible differences were smaller compared to shooting on different batches of 500T. Both digital cinema cameras at this point look flat and lack any skin tone tonality or film quality, no matter what nonsense marketing departments makes up. This is my assessment of course. For the last five years or more, any modern day cinema camera can be matched or altered in anyway you like. To choose a camera because of branding, or because someone specific uses it, or because it is the most expensive camera is extremely dangerous to the creative process. It's something I see alot of companies, influencers, and youtubers saying. Basically one is saying that they limit their creative possibilities, based on what a company or other individual feels is a "cinematic image". Rather than taking full control of your look in pre, production, and post. As I always say in today's age, people are more focused on the guitar than the song. The guitar is only a part of the creative process of creating the song. Even than, chances are the guitarist is going to change the sound and character of the guitar out of the box. Whether it be the amplifier, pedals, strings, etc. Please read Steve Yedlin's analysis on Color Science. www.yedlin.net/OnColorScience/index.html Nonetheless, good luck on your endeavors and most importantly take care of yourself in this difficult industry!

    Buying a camera just for rental purpose is a bit silly to be honest. It's 2024 right now and you can rent it for 450€/day (so I guess it's even cheaper in dollars). In the real estate business it's the opposite, you ll get more years after years. (Btw sorry if my English is not perfect, it's not my first language). For exemple you can find a ARRI ALEXA mini (full kit) for 18000€ in 2024. And ask your rental company, they will always say that if you want to invest for a rental purpose, simply choose a Sony (it's the most rented cameras out there).
    I would say something else; buy it if you really need it for your projects or simply if you want it (don't overthink about this), especially now at this price.
    I'm going to buy an Amira, not for rental purpose but only because I always wanted to own an Arri (I shot multiple times with it tho). And at this price I prefer to get this than a Komodo X, a FX9 or a URSA Cine 12k, I'm just in love with the image quality. It's not even a wise investment, I know that but who cares, filmmaking is my passion before being my job ;-)
