I was taking guitar lessons and said i wanted to learn Steely Dan, the teacher goes... umm... some of those songs have 32 chords... lets aim a little lower
Yeah, perfect anology. Fresh perfect Orange juice. Most Steely Dan tracks have a very deep musicality to them and many many layers, but they play like something that nature created,
The ultimate band. The band that other musicians can appreciate due to their originality, jazz influence and perfection on every song. They chose the best studio musicians and merged the best tracks to their liking. You can listen to their music and still not be tired of it decades later. One hundred years from now they will still be playing Steely Dan. Can’t say the same for today’s music.
I saw a live band, the other day, and they played "Do It Again". They didn't have a keyboard. I had been playing it on the keyboard, earlier that day. It's fun, memorable, and easy, as it has mostly one chord, then walks up and down three chord steps, and then hits another chord, and starts over. When you have one chord, in the rhythm hand, it frees up the focus, for the soloing relationships of the melody hand.
Graduated in 1974. This song carries me back to then. Now we play it at class reunions. Yea we are reeling in the years for sure now! But the tune sounds as fresh now as it did 50 years ago.
Ah! Lex is right! That is one of the most SATISFYING songs ever!! I swear, anyone who spends any time listening to Steely Dan would become a Muso, a fan of great musicianship!
Can feel the heat from the dryer blowing out my new found long hair.,thanks to the beatles.😅listening to this ( AB music.after Beatles broke up,and I was finally of age.
Agreed. I checked to see if how others ranked it as far as its place among best solos. I think it was down in the 50s somewhere. Really thought it should be higher. I like how his guitar "responds" to each lyric in the chorus. When I listen to this, it's like Randall's guitar is trying to sing its own lyrics.
These guys were some of the most talented songwriters and studio musicians to ever put on a set of headphones. Their earlier stuff has a bit of psychedelic, whereas they got a bit jazzier their career went on (ie. Aja). You may want to check out Deacon Blues from that one ✌️
You two definitely need to listen to more Steely Dan. They are legendary. I have always had a sentimental attachment to Steely Dan for two reasons: First, my very first girlfriend gave me all their CD’s as a present back in 1989. Second, I was fortunate enough to see Steely Dan in concert at the Miami Arena back in 1994. Very unusual concert…Donald Fagen and Walter Becker came out, sat on wooden barstools with regular old fashioned can lights above them. During the applause after each tune, the guy sitting right behind me, was shouting crazy sounds just like Steven Tyler. After a few songs, that got old. So I had planned to turn and say I like his enthusiasm, but could he just applaud like everyone else. I turned around…it was Steven Tyler. Lol.
That's incredible. Each solo is different, and he's still going full throttle even as the music is fading out. This is a standout solo amongst stand out solos.
This is on of the more uptempo songs from Steely Dan. Overall they have some of the smooooooooothest music ever. I would recommend reacting to “Hey Nineteen” and “Do It Again.”
I can remember driving with my dad in the 70s in a 1972 yellow dodge station wagon with do it again playing on the radio. Such a smooth song when you are rolling down the freeway. You just kind of melt into the woodwork especially when someone else is driving! Good times.
Love Steely Dan. They were my favorite group for years when they came out. Peg, Dirty Work, Do It Again, Rikki Dont Lose That Number... cant find a bad song with this band. Hope you will do more of them!
Lex's smile after the lyric....... "You've been telling me you're a genius since you were 17, and after all this time I still down't know what you mean"...... was PRICELESS!!!! It's like they were writing the words just for her.
Lex has the best Metaphors when discussing music. 🍊🤣 One of the best things about Steely Dan is not only are they musically intense and complex in a jazz-informed kinda way, they write songs that sketch out characters. interesting characters living lives you can imagine. There are actually short story collections published which flesh out the people and stories described in their songs. That’s pretty damn cool.
I could never get into those for me it's always been the albums Can't buy a thrill, countdown to ecstacy, pretzel logic, and Katy Lied. After these four I just couldn't get into them much.
Hey, Nineteen came out at the perfect time in my life. It was about then that I knew for certain that 19 year old girls were absolutely too young for me. Funny thing is, I can now say the same about 40-year olds, even though I still look, LOL.
@@earlonaweary9155 Just after the second chorus of "are you reelin' in the years" I don't know why, but the timing, sound, sequence, just sounds perfect to me.
What kind of orange is Lex drinking to taste the dirt? 🤣 I took a pledge to always acknowledge the greatness of Steely Dan every time I hear their sound.
Been listening to that song, and that band, for 49 years. Still absolutely fresh. HUGE catalog! AMAZING repertoire! Find a bad track, IF YOU CAN. The Steely Dany Vibe: Brilliant lyrics, superior songwriting, top notch musicianship, unequaled production.
Lex is so accurate with her descriptions based on other senses. music is all about your senses. it's why you shouldn't read or focus on something visually when you listen. let all your senses take in the music. it's ALL a VIBE. Brad is on a very long journey trying to figure Lex out but I understand her on music. It has taste and smell and memories even if you've never heard it or lived it.
I forgot how much I loved this band. I would be out at night in the late seventies cruising around by myself and pull over and listen. As much as I loved other bands, I did this for no others.
I cannot tell you the number of times my girlfriend and I drive around county roads for hours listening to this and other Steely Dan songs (along with Van Morrison, Traffic, Derek&the Dominoes . . .). HALCYON DAYS.
I love it. Brad analyzing the lyrics, and Lex groovin' to the music. Lex hit it on the head. Steely Dan is very cleanly produced, so every instrument stands out, and the silences are silent (if that makes any sense). Always an interesting sonic trip.
Fun fact. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, the lead guitar player, in addition to also being a member of the Doobie Brothers, is also a rocket scientist who works for our federal government in missile defense and design. He is a no joke, real life, top secret scientist.
You two are the perfect pair to do reactions because you approach it from either direction. Brad more focused on lyrics & Lex feeling the instruments first. It’s cool how y’all meet in the middle..it’s perfect! Analog recordings are fresh squeezed!
I was 19 and working on an oil rig off Uk. This came on and I bought Can’t Buy a Thrill as soon as I came onshore. Been a huge Dan fan for almost all my life.

Lex for the win! The natural perfection of freshly squeezed orange juice is exactly the right metaphor for the perfection of soundscapes that Steely Dan were known for. You guys are so much fun!
Love watching you two. Brad is so serious, always in the study mode, and Lex, always in the groove mode, so happy with her outward expression feeling the music. Yin and yang.
The production on Steely Dan albums is always clean, tight, and easy to listen to. You hear something new every time you listen to one of their songs again.
Lex you crack me up. You’re all bouncing around while Brad is sitting there studiously contemplating the meaning of the lyrics. I adored your orange juice metaphor and totally get it. Some of these old classics just seem more fresh and tastier than the highly processed music of recent years.
This song is my favorite rock'in 70's song and I don't say that lightly. It has appeared on more of my own mix-tapes through the years-- than anything else. Lex your so fun. You guys are cool.
They had some of the finest players of the day on their records. Everyone was 100% in control, and that left them all the space they needed to stretch out and be creative with all of the parts. They made lots of really great songs you can just groove to. But the more times you listen, the more new things you can hear. True classics. They brought top 40 to a whole new level.
This is one of their first big hits and probably one of their most "normal" rock tunes. FM, or Kid Charlemagne if you want some more "Steely Dan" Steely Dan.
