Glad you all reacted to Steely Dan!! Among reaction channels they have become known as the "musician's musicians" because of their complex chord structures and amazing songwriting!! I highly recommend, Do It Again, Dirty Work, My Old School, Black Friday, and The Caves of Altamira!!!!

Steely Dan were a really good 70's band. They had a unique sound that combined rock with jazz. "Reelin' In The Years" is one of my favorites from them. Other Steely Dan songs I would recommend for you to react to are "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Do It Again", "Peg", "Deacon Blues" and "Hey Nineteen".

This song grew on me over the years. The decades, really. I was a youngster when it was first released. I liked it. Who didn't, right? But as I heard it periodically over the years, I heard more of it.
More IN it, I guess I should say. But as many have said, that is Steely Dan. Extremely talented musicians and songwriters. This is a multi-solo song if I have ever heard one. A truly iconic song.
Their "Do It Again" has that same kind of magic.
Steely Dan is one of the best bands in R&R history.
    In music history.

The lead guitarist is Elliott randall and he nailed it on the first take in studio. Jimmy page has said it's his favorite solo of all time. And btw you need to really to listen to this and all rock in stereo.

For our younger listeners, I want you to realize that this was the first track on the first album released by The Dan. For many people, their first introduction to this new band was that Elliot Randall guitar solo. Highly recommend everything from The Royal Scam and Aja (don't jump straight into this album, though), Black Friday and Doctor Wu (from Katy Lied), Dirty Work and Do It Again (also from Can't Buy a Thrill), Time Out of Mind and Hey Nineteen (from Gaucho), and Rikki Don't Lose That Number (from Pretzel Logic).

You need to listen to more Steely Dan. This is basically a studio band that used the best musicians in the industry. Some of the music is incredibly complex and all of it is really well produced. Listen to all of the songs on headphones. You'll miss a lot if you don't. The album AJA is a masterpiece. After listening to some of the more popular songs from that album, I recommend listening to the song entitled AJA. It's totally different from the other Steely Dan pieces. You'll enjoy it. Trust me.

Absolutely an album band. Take each one for a week or two, and I can guarantee you'll find new favorites and treasures every few listens. The guitar work is pretty much PhD level stuff, and guitarists who master these portions have mastered a LOT of other works before.

As a former Top 40 DJ who spun a lot of vinyl 45's back in the 70's I always thought how cool it would be to start a radio station that only played STEELY DAN songs. Of course, I would include Donald Fagen's solo work, too. I hope you continue your deep dive into STEELY DAN and Mom let your daughter experience the tight, sophisticated jazz elements in their later work.

Yes they're talent ,creativity allowed them to help meld some jazz fusion into a piece that would appeal to , get airplay 'pop' stations ,promoters . Phil Collins said Genesis was the money cow bu he really loved the work he did with ( Brand X)

❤ On a personal note, i was a guitarist during this peiod. Thought i could make it as a studio player. Practiced the hell out of this song in particular ... the bit at 3:45 convinced me that a different career path was in order. Never could keep up. This is what it is to be a consummate professional

Thank you for Steely Dan! They have so many great tunes. "Hey Nineteen" is another they did with a similar theme to what you were talking about on this song!
Also, how about reacting to: Bobbie Gentry - "Ode To Billy Joe". It's a classic Southern Gothic tale that went number one for her and spurred a hit movie based on the song. Bobbie is premier songwriter and story teller. She was one of the First female singers to produce her own records. I _highly_ recommend a her live performance specifically titled, "Ode to Billie Joe - Bobbie Gentry (BBC Live 1968)". The video quality is great on this video and her performance is absolutely mesmerizing!

Elliott Randall was the outstanding guitarist on this song. Another guitarist they used frequently was, Jazz great, Larry Carlton. (He also wrote the very jazzy theme song to cop show "Hill Street Blues" which was big from 1981 - 1987.
Check out Larry's guitar work on Steely Dan's,
    " Don't Take Me Alive".
    Thanks! Another awesome reaction!

When someone asked me, What is your favorite band are musicians. I just can't answer that question, because when you hear a band like Steely Dan which is truly one of the greats! and then another like Pink Floyd. How can you pick? One thing I do know. We have a lot of talented musicians around today. But I still think it hard to beat the ones from that generation. No autotune! Please cover more Steely Dan if you can!

A couple of requests. 1. "Superstar" by The Carpenters and 2. "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish. If you like metal, the second song is Symphonic Metal. Nightwish is big everywhere in the world except the most of the US. They are big on the east and west coast of the US. They are from Finland and the lead singer is Floor Jansen from The Netherlands. They sing in English and Floor is, IMHO the best female singer in the world right now. I suggest using the 2013 Wacken concert version. Love you ladies.

I don't think there's a lot of "hidden meaning" in this song. This song is a bitter break-up letter from a guy who feels betrayed by a woman we cared for. It drips with angry venom towards her. Plus great guitar work.

  • @tedcole9936
    @tedcole9936 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, thanks for the good discussion.. If I may add to it.. (and I've never heard any reactors mention it...) the clever wordplay in the title... Is it "Reelin in" (the years) - like reeling (people/men?) in, like a fish on a fishing line, or the other meaning: "Reeling" (in the years) Reeling, like, your head's spinning dizzily... as the years pass quickly by. I think both work, which makes it pretty special... Steely Dan had some clever lyrics, for sure, besides the fantastic musicianship. My favorite line is this one is "The weekend at the college didn't turn out like you planned..." we've all been there on that one, right??? But it's chock full of great lyrics. Thanks for posting this one!

The Shuffle Beat and the Guitar Work, Do It Again was the released single before this one. Known for their craftmanship and quality, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen used known musicians (hired guns) in their later albums. If you ever react to Rikki ..., try to find album version. Some may object to how they used influential jazz in their work, and you may want to look into the origin of the band's name. :)

Great reaction to this excellent Steely Dan song ! ( one of their many classics ) .. And yes, Baby Gap, a great guitar solo here ! .. Although many of their diehard fans lean towards their jazzier / more progressive songs, my favourites are among their more commercially sounding numbers .. "Dirty Work", "Ricky Don't Lose That Number" and "Do It Again" would probably be my Top 3 .. Cheers, Wayne
